The Last Jedi brought with it several tie-in novels for young readers. We review The Legends of Luke Skywalker by Ken Kiu, Cobalt Squadron by Elizabeth Wein, and Bomber Command by Jason Fry, asking: is it difficult to create books that fall in the short time between The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi? Or did these just not work for us?We also discuss the Forces of Destiny comic books and how they add some good stories to the canon while, oddly, repeating others. Lucasfilm’s Leland Chee says fans may be surprised by some of the Expanded Universe characters returning to canon next. Comedic comic book characters Tag and Bink already have a cameo in Solo: A Star Wars Story, so what could be next? We also touch on fan theories about when a trailer for Solo might appear. Why is Rose not on the Resistance Bomber with her sister Paige for the battle over D'Qar in The Last Jedi? The novel Cobalt Squadron has the answer, which involves a direct request from none other than Vice-Admiral Holdo herself. Also, the shot from Starkiller Base that destroyed the Hosnian system? If you were in hyperspace when it happened, you felt it big time. Punch it! ***I'm listener supported! In the days leading up to The Last Jedi, Cobalt and Crimson Squadrons - those would be the squadrons of Resistance bombers - we're on a secret mission in First Order territory, risking the provocation of open warfare first to spy on the First Order's activities in the Atterra system, and then to supply Atterrans attempting to fight back against the First Order occupation and blockade. That's the gist of Cobalt Squadron, the new junior novel by Elizabeth Wren that tells us what Rose and Paige Tico were up to prior to their onscreen appearances. Punch it! ***I'm listener supported! We’re continuing our discussion of events surrounding The Last Jedi, but we’re doing it by way of a book. Elizabeth Wein’s novel Cobalt Squadron gives us some highly coveted backstory on The Last Jedi newcomer, Rose Tico, as well as her sister Paige. Set prior to the Hosnian Cataclysm, Cobalt Squadron follows the members of its titular fleet of StarFortress bombers, as they come to the aid of Atterra--a planet that reminds the Tico sisters of their homeworld, which was devastated by the First Order. We also discuss some Galaxy's Edge news and Josh recommends a podcast episode featuring Rian Johnson.
