Erik Childress and Steve Prokopy look at six new movies this week. They include an acclaimed film from Ireland you may have heard about on our best-of-2022 show (The Quiet Girl) and a feature version of Idris Elba's BBC series (Luther: The Fallen Sun). The star of Sex Education brings the author of Wuthering Heights to life (Emily) and hippies become Jesus freaks (Jesus Revolution). Finally, David Harbour is a silent apparition in a new family's home (We Have a Ghost) and you may have heard the one about the bear that did cocaine. 0:00 - Intro 2:39 - Luther: The Fallen Sun 11:08 – The Quiet Girl 21:24 - Jesus Revolution 30:47 - Emily 39:27 - We Have a Ghost 50:47 - Cocaine Bear 1:07:08 - Outro
These are my favorite movies and TV show from June-December 2022. June Insidious 1 & 2 (Amazon & Netflix) I'd never seen the Insidious movies. However, my younger brother watched them and told me they were creepy(which piqued my interest). In June, the first part was available on Prime Video, and the sequel and third films were on Netflix. I binged all three, but I preferred the first two as they wrapped up the Lambert family storyline. Black Phone (movies) The next Blumhouse movie on this list. The movie pundits I follow talked about this Black Phone's great word of mouth from early screenings. Saw this in theaters and was amazed at Ethan Hawke's villainous performance. His 2nd turn as a bad guy in 2022(first in Moon Knight on Disney+ months earlier, but much better here). Umbrella Academy S3 (Netflix) I like the Umbrella Academy and its different take on the superhero genre. The protagonist dysfunctional family consists of odd but likable characters, all with their own agendas, coming together to save the world from destruction. I've rewatched the footloose scene at the beginning of this season multiple times on Tik Tok. July Gray Man (Netflix) An action-packed thriller which is also one of the most expensive movies Netflix has produced. Gray Man is a bombastic summer-style movie usually reserved for theaters which I, like everyone else, enjoyed at home. At least tune in for Chris Evan's fantastic mustache. Paper Girls (Amazon) I read the first volume of this comic years ago and loved it. So when this adaptation showed up on Prime Video, I had to watch it. It wasn't perfect and downright ridiculous at times, but a fun sci-fi ride. Too bad Paper Girls was canceled after one season. I still want to read the entire comic run. Old Man S1 (Hulu) Senior citizen Jeff Bridges is a war criminal/John Wick-type soldier in hiding. When he's discovered and goes on the run, Dan Chase(Jeff Bridges)is not a man you want to cross paths with. John Lithgow is also in this series; his scenes are incredible. Unfortunately, halfway through the filming of season one, the pandemic happened, and Jeff Bridges had (real-life)health issues. The show was initially supposed to be ten episodes but shortened to seven. However, the finale was satisfying. Hopefully, Mr. Bridges will regain his health, and we can get a 2nd season of this excellent show. The Boys S3 (Amazon) The Boys is the show I recommend to anyone who wants to watch the current, best TV program in the superhero genre. Placing in Nielsen's top 15 original streaming programs of 2022, this Prime Video exclusive was seen more than any Marvel or DC TV show. Anthony Starr's performance as Homelander and how his story continues to unfold is tremendous-highly recommended. Stranger Things 4 pt 2 (Netflix) Stranger Things 4 was the summer event for me. Another show I ate up and relished. August Light & Magic documentary (Disney+) In August, I watched two documentaries discussing content from my youth. First, Light & Magic spoke about the formation of the ILM studio and its creation of beloved film series such as Star Wars and Jurassic Park. In addition, it delves into stop-motion photography which motivates me to make my own action-figure stories which I'm currently doing. Milestone Media documentary (HBO) Milestone Generations was the second documentary. The peak of my comic fandom(and for many) was the early 90s. This film chronicled a collection of black creators establishing their own company and publishing comics with their homegrown black superheroes. I never bought Milestone comics, but watching this doc and discovering the modern inner-city stories told, is up my alley. Fascinating documentary. Sandman S1 (Netflix) I halfway read the first volume of Vertigo's critically acclaimed Sandman comic run during the early 2000s, but it didn't connect with me. Fast forward to July 2022, the TV series was announced to premiere on Netflix in August. When the show debuted, I listened to comic book aficionado Robert Meyer Burnett's quick review on John Campea's podcast, and he loved it. He said some shots were identical from the comic book panels to the TV screen, which made me curious. My favorite scene is the battle between Dream(the Sandman)and Lucifer. Thirteen Lives (Amazon) A dramatization of the true story of 13 people who got stuck in a cave in Thailand and the rescue mission which followed. When this movie came on Prime video, two documentaries on Netflix and Disney+ premiered discussing the same event. Thirteen Lives was riveting, and I was surprised this wasn't in theaters. September Cobra Kai S5 (Netflix) Cobra Kai is fun, and I will continue to watch as long as the same creative team and cast stay in place. This past season, Terry Silver and his Cobra Kai students were great villains with shades of gray. The upcoming season six was announced and said to be the last. All good things must end, and that doesn't disappoint me when you go out on top, which hopefully Cobra Kai will. Prey (Hulu) A Predator story done right. Prey shows how one can take an established sci-fi horror franchise and make it simple yet effective. A similar formula might work for another iconic movie villain-the Terminator. Kisstory (Hulu) One of my earliest childhood memories is from Kiss' Phantom of the Park movie, where the band stands next to a wooden roller coaster. I've never been a big Kiss fan but watching them on season 8 of American Idol(2009), Adam Lambert performing alongside the rock legends in the finale, brought back old memories. Kisstory is a 'Behind The Music' type documentary narrated by Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons. A story that educated me on the group's formation, the tours, and the numerous hits they've had over the years. An engrossing four-hour doc which I only put down in-between parts because I had to go to bed. Elvis (HBO Max) I saw this in theaters in March but was tired and fell asleep various times. However, after rewatching Elvis at home, it quickly became one of my favorite films of 2022. The combination of Austin Butler's performance and Baz Luhrmann's direction was an experience I'll rewatch years later. I regularly listen to Austin Butler's rendition of the 'Vegas Rehearsal/That's All Right' song from the soundtrack. Everything Everywhere All at Once (PPV) I'd heard movie critics rave about this movie around the beginning of the year. By September, the film still had yet to come to a streaming service, so I bought it on pay-per-view. Adventure, sci-fi, comedy, drama. I found myself cheering and crying at different points while watching this movie. Another favorite from 2022. Barbarian (movies) I watched this and 'Smile' a few weeks apart. Barbarian is the superior of the two. One of the several small budgets horror films released in 2022 which scored big profits. Highly enjoyable. Even though Barbarian was a better movie than 'Smile,' the latter gave me trouble sleeping. October Werewolf by Night (Disney+) This was a surprise, and I'd like to see the MCU do more. A 'special presentation' introducing a group of characters or revisiting established ones like the 'Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special.' The Werewolf by Night himself gave me Wolverine vibes. House of the Dragon (HBO Max) I'm late to the party regarding Game of Thrones—digging into the whole HBO series, like many others during the pandemic. House of the Dragon fills the Targaeryan backstory and doesn't disappoint. I also enjoyed the focus on fewer characters and seeing them grow over time. Green Lantern: Beware My Power (HBO Max) I found this while browsing the DC section on HBO Max. DC, hands down, has excellent animated movies with adult overtones. A space adventure that delves deeper into Green Lantern John Stewart and Adam Strange, whom I haven't heard about in a while. November See S3 (Apple TV+) To me, Jason Momoa's best work is his DCEU Aquaman appearances, and See on Apple TV+. I loved the first two seasons; this 3rd and final chapter was excellent. Watching this post-apocalyptic world where most of the population is blind and living within tribes in the wilderness was intriguing. I recommend See if you're looking for a great, complete sci-fi/action show. Spirited (Apple TV+) It was November, the holidays were around the corner, and there was a giant billboard for Spirited, displaying Will Ferrell and Ryan Reynolds, near the Port Authority bus terminal in Times Square. I thought, these two actors have made me laugh plenty before, so let's check this out. This Apple TV+ exclusive was delightful and had a different spin on the Scrooge story. A heartwarming musical, which I didn't mind. Andor S1 (Disney+) Andor beats any live-action Star Wars TV currently on Disney+. It started slow, but the intrigue and story build as we see the forming of the Rebellion against the Empire. The prison episodes with Andy Serkis were tremendous. The English (Amazon) Another great Amazon Prime Video show that no one seems to talk about. A stoic and violent western starring Emily Blunt. The English put its hooks into me from the first episode. Rafe Spall is also a great villain who you love to hate. Excellent and gorgeous-looking show. December Pistol (Hulu) I'm entertained by these Hulu dramas based on actual events. Dopesick with Micheal Keaton was sad yet amazing. The Dropout with Amanda Seyfried was eye-opening. Tommy & Pamela was amusing. Finally, Pistol, based on the beginnings of the Sex Pistols band and the punk scene in the UK, was interesting, informative, and plays to making your dreams come true even if you don't know how to play the guitar. White Lotus S2 (HBO Max) I watched the first season based on movie critic Grace Randolph's recommendation and found it awkward, funny, and intelligent with a murder mystery thrown in. As soon as the first episode ended for season 2, I was there every following Sunday to gobble up the next installment. The White Lotus season 2 has a dark comedic charm, and I love the soundtrack by Cristobal Tapia de Veer with all the weird chanting. Avatar: Way of Water (movies) As I mentioned, Stranger Things season 4 was an event for me. Avatar 2 was as well. It was long-winded at parts, especially the sections dealing with the whales, but great drama, action, and peak science fiction. Being transported to Pandora again didn't disappoint. Finally, favorites of 2022 Overall(the media below did not have to be released in 2022 to be included). Games (I had a blast playing these games and completed them)- Halo Infinite (2021) (Xbox-Game Pass) Wolfenstein: The New Order (2014) (Xbox-Game Pass) The Gunk (2021) (Xbox-Game Pass) Comics The Woods(the entire series) (published 2014-2017) (Boom! Studios) Wolverine: Enemy of the State (published 2005) (Marvel) TV Yellowstone S1-S4 (Peacock) Reacher S1 (Prime Video) Peacemaker S1 (HBO Max) The White Lotus S1 & S2 (HBO Max) As We See It S1 (Prime Video) See S3 (final season) (Apple TV+) Ozark (final season) (Netflix) Strangers Things 4 parts 1 & 2 (Netflix) House of the Dragon S1 (HBO Max) The Boys S3 (Prime Video) The Last Kingdom S5 (Netflix) Movies Elvis Everything Everywhere All At Once Top Gun Maverick Streaming Movies Thirteen Lives (Prime Video) Gray Man (Netflix) Animated Movies: Turning Red (Disney+) Green Lantern: Beware My Power (HBO Max) Legend of Vox Machina (Prime Video) Documentaries: Light & Magic (Disney+) Kisstory (Hulu) Thoughts? Jared, Oriana and Ned talk about Oriana's choice of topic: Gollum. For all the high adventure, heroics great and small and world-shattering consequences and much more that exists in Tolkien's legendarium, arguably the most fascinating character he created in the end is his most racked, ruined and miserable, first encountered as a mysterious slimy creature living and lurking in a subterranean lake with only one thing of particular value to his name. Tolkien's introduction of both Gollum and a magic ring into this world was, to borrow a phrase from the narrator of The Hobbit, a turning point in his career, the more when as he embarked on the writing that would result in The Lord of the Rings he realized he needed to rethink and redo the original, much more comically grotesque version of Gollum into a being living out any number of emotional and physical extremities at once. Arguably both this transformation and then the incorporation of this version of Gollum into his grand story became something he never quite got over, based on his various reactions over time as seen most clearly in his published letters on the subject. Why might the strongest scene for the entire Lord of the Rings be the simple gesture of Gollum tentatively reaching out to touch a sleeping Frodo on the way to Cirith Ungol? What is it about Tolkien's self retcon of what Gollum is at heart that is fascinating still? Does the unspoken backstory of Sméagol and Déagol's relationship suggest deep waters indeed, and how did Tolkien regard them both? And did Gollum really eat babies in the end or was that just something dreamed up by dirtbag elves?SHOW NOTES.Jared's doodle – just waiting on some fish as the endless, timeless years stretch on…Was there rain? Kino Loy is most definitely a major stand out character for me from the show Andor. With such little screen time, Kino left an indelible mark on audiences across the board. For me, it's Kino's character arc that really hits home. In his example, there is no better illustration of the most basic human instinct to resist change. In his character arc, we see exactly the process that all of us experience (in varying degrees) when change and uncertainty is thrust upon us. ==============This week's shout out goes to fellow Star Wars podcasters out of the city of Brotherly Love! Episode 550 is here! To celebrate the latest Empire Podcast landmark, we once again staged a live show at Kings Place, London, and now here is that show, reassembled in the correct order and with the really naughty bits cut out (to see those, the live stream of the show is still available to watch via kings place.co.uk for the next two weeks!). And it was a belter, as Chris Hewitt, Helen O'Hara, Ben Travis, and James Dyer took to the stage in front of a packed crowd of loyal listeners, and chatted about the week's movie news, reviewed EO, Puss In Boots: The Last Wish, The Whale, Knock At The Cabin, and Saint Omer, and answered a ton of listener questions. But that's not all: a landmark episode deserves a landmark line-up of guests, and we didn't disappoint, with Aftersun director Charlotte Wells and her young star, Frankie Corio, joining James and Helen for a chat about the BAFTA-nominated belter; director Asif Kapadia showed up to talk to Chris about Kapadia's new film, Creature (and NOT Liverpool Football Club, or the Queen); and we looked ahead to the big-screen debut of Luther in Luther: The Fallen Sun by inviting director Jamie Payne and the film's villain, living legend and national treasure Andy Serkis, along to chat with Chris and James. A good time was had by all on the night, and we hope you enjoy this as much as we did. Enjoy.

New episode out now! We cover the complicated world of obsessive Victorian magicians in 2006's The Prestige, and beware–spoilers abound! This movie is wild and we get right into it by trying to unravel the many layers and timelines of this mystery-adjacent film. We talk about the themes of obsession, sacrifice, class, and of course magic while wondering if the addition of a sci-fi element muddles the mystery a little. We also try to decide if all of the main characters are sociopaths, mull over the concept of magic vs science, think the acting is appropriately intense, and get into a slight philosophical debate about the nature of cloning, souls, and consciousness. Katy squeezes in some London knowledge to the surprise of no one, Carrie gets jealous of handwriting, Maddy wants all the magic wands, and Mack has a get-rich plan for his clones. We also talk about other Victorian stage acts, wonder if we've ever been to Colorado Springs, agree that electricity is scary, and get surprised by Andy Serkis. With 2022 behind us, I'm sure you've experienced some ups and downs like I have, but nothing was more bumpy and unpredictable than the movies we got this year. This is going to be a two-part podcast, where part 1 will be on the top worst movies of 2022 and the second part will be a bit more optimistic being about the best movies of the year. Now there's a film critic who I often like named Chris Stuckman, you've probably heard of him, but he has a philosophy of not sharing his worst movies of the year because he believes that the filmmakers worked hard on their projects and he doesn't want to pass off bad judgment. I respect him for that, but I wholeheartedly disagree. I think filmmakers need to be held accountable for the material they present to the world. Many of them get paid more than most of us, and we're not only entrusting them with our hard-earned money, but two, or two and a half hours of our valuable time. And if a movie robs me of either of those, I want to warn those in my circle - you guys - to stay the hell away. Now, please bear in mind that these two lists are purely subjective. I'm not trying to start a fight, although if you want to come on the show and debate me on any of these choices, I invite you to bring your A-game and I'll spar with you, but we have to agree to end it amicably, even if we can't agree on the film. Deal? So that brings me to number 10 on my top worst movies of 2022. But before I start, know that what I did was simply make a list of the 25 movies that were released this year and I ranked them from best to worst. Then I meticulously drew a line separating the ones I'd watch again, and the ones I really don't care to. With that in mind, the first four I'm about to mention, I'd be willing to give them another chance if the mood presented itself, but overall, I was disappointed after my first viewing. So the the number 10 worst movie of 2022 is The Batman. Like a few other movies on my list, I really struggled with this one, because there's the whole movie that I actually enjoyed quite a bit, but then the ending just really ruined it for me. Spoilers if you haven't seen it, but I just feel like Batman just turned into this Disney character at the end where he was grappling with dumb morality issues that he should have figured out when he was twelve. I understand that in today's violent and angry culture it's good to see a superhero lay down his arms and focus on defending the weak instead of fighting the baddies - hell, that's what I teach my kids. But I go to the movies to watch the baddies get beat up and their heads blown off. As a moviegoer that brings me joy and it's fun to watch. Because I'm mature enough to know that it's fake, and in any real life situation, we need to avoid violence at all costs. I loved Collin Ferrell as The Penguin, I thought Robert Pattinson was a more than passable Batman, but a little weird and spooky to be Bruce Wayne. Jeffrey Wright was an impressive Lt. Gordon. Paul Dano nailed it as The Riddler. And I was even impressed with Andy Serkis's take on Alfred. However, no casting lineup can possibly outdo Christopher Nolan's Batman characters -- particularly Michael Caine's Alfred, which will never ever be matched. Like I said, I'd be more than willing to give this movie another try, especially since I'll be able to brace myself for the ending, and perhaps ease into it with a little more acceptance. Number 9 is Elvis. This was a fun movie, filmed in a very loud and obnoxious way. I'm not familiar with any of Bad Luhrmann's work outside of this one, but I just didn't feel like the style necessarily fit the story being told. That's just my opinion, and I'm willing to say I'm wrong about that. Can you tell it takes me a while to adjust to anything new? I thought Austin Butler was astounding as Elvis. I of course loved the music, and it was fun to finally have a film that gave us a peak into his life. It was a bit jarring to see Tom Hanks be in the antagonist role, but at least he wasn't just being Tom Hanks again. I feel like from 2019 and to now we're stuck on the Polar Express where it's just Tom Hanks everywhere we look. Number 8 out of the gate is Scream 2022. Not really called that, but if you're going to give your movie the same title as its originator, then I'm going to attach the release year to it. On any other day, I would actually put this as number 10, or at least the bottom of my Best Of list. My problem with this horror flick is quite obvious - it just didn't come close to capturing the magic of the 1996 original. That '96 film is so special and funny and original, that of course none of its sequels ever had a chance. But I want to be clear, this is easily the best of the Scream sequels, and the more I talk about it, the more I want to rewatch it, because honestly, I watched it so long ago that I don't remember a thing about it. I do remember that Courtney Cox's facelift made me keep mistaking her for Ghostface. A word to anyone who's aging: Don't get plastic on your face. It makes you look like a secondhand Barbie doll trying to come to life. Number 7. This one's bound to give some people hot flashes, and the controversy is welcome. But Thor: Love and Thunder underwhelmed the absolute shit out of me. Thor: Ragnarok and the Infinity War movies set the precedent for Thor going forward. But the entire movie just wasn't funny. And it's not like I went into it with crossed arms, making the movie prove itself to me. My arms were wide open and I was welcome to whatever good humor was to deliver me, but it failed miserably. Not only was it not funny, but I felt like there was not much of consequence for most of the film, like I had to slug through the first 3/4 to get to the meat of the movie. And I'll be honest, I enjoyed the ending. I'm anxious to see Thor interact as a bumbling father in the next film. I was impressed that (spoiler) Marvel had the balls to kill Jane Foster, and it looks like it's a permanent death. And Christian Bale - do I even need to echo literally every other person who saw the movie? - he crushed it so hard as an incredible foe who's nearly as great as Thanos. It was a shame that he died, because I'd love to see him again, or maybe we'll get a prequel or a Marvel miniseries? But yeah, this one hurt me deeply because I was so looking forward to it. My only hope is that Guardians of the Galaxy 3 doesn't pull this same bait and switch nonsenses. Now we're getting to the portion of the list where I just don't ever want to revisit the following movies because of how trashy and dull they were. Number 6 is Disney's Pinocchio 2022. There I go again adding the year of release. This weirdo film is not to be mistaken by the 1940's Pinocchio, one of the greatest technical and cinematic achievements in the history of film. Can you tell I have quite a love for that movie? Pinocchio 2022 basically copied the original shot-by-shot, Lion King style, but not nearly as pretty, and it made changes that weakened the story altogether. For instance, in this version, Pinocchio actually goes to school, but he then gets kicked out because he's different. What kind of message does that send kids? That if you get made fun of, you're allowed to just go off and get into trouble? Or what's with Pinocchio having to lie again to get out of the trouble he caused himself by lying? The whole point of the scene where he's in the birdcage is for him to ask and receive forgiveness by the Blue Fairy. It's character growth, because it shows that he's starting to feel remorse for his wrongdoings. And don't get me started on the whole subplot they shoehorned in with the girl and her puppet. Every time that happened I went half asleep. And it's funny too, that this CGI Pinocchio had only a quarter of the personality and charm the original Pinocchio had. Now I will say that the voice of Pinocchio was really impressive, and Joseph Gordon Levitt absolutely crushed it as Jimney. And I did really like the Easter eggs with the wooden clocks. Tom Hanks was fine, I guess, but I would have preferred to see a newer actor in that role. Like, Geesh, Tom, there are other actors hungrier that you - give them a chance. Number 5 is the Ethan Hawk movie Black Phone. I went into this like I do for almost every other movie I watch, which is completely blind. I refuse to watch trailers if I can help it. But if it's just a teaser or It's far enough out that I'll forget, then those are the only times I'll treat myself. But I went into this stone-cold blind. And honestly, it was very forgettable. It was a run-of-the mill indie horror film that really didn't shock or awe me in any way. I only watched it two or three months ago and I can only tell you it's about a boy who gets kidnapped and he's being held captive in a guy's basement. I remember snippets of the end, but that's it. So that's the problem with doing these best and worst of podcasts I guess: Maybe I need to start taking notes on every new movie I watch so I can remember what the hell I watched several months ago. I have such a bad memory as is, so it might be worth doing. The Bob's Burgers Movie is number 4. This one is kind of a cheat, because it was late at night and my wife was asleep, so I had to keep the volume down super low, and I didn't have my glasses at the time because they were broken, so I couldn't see the subtitle very well. I went into this movie never having seen an episode of Bob's Burgers, but I figured it was like the Simpsons. The jokes that I did see or hear were pretty funny, the song was catchy, but when it got into the whole murder mystery aspect, I really didn't care about it. So I'm just being honest when I say that I actually fell asleep before the movie ended, probably because my eyes were so tired from straining, but I also didn't care enough to go back and rewatch what I'd missed. That's a really bad sign, so it went pretty low on my list. The Simpson's Movie, though, that's a different conversation that I'd love to have with a guest one day. My high school and college self would never believe it that there would be a day when a Pixar movie would be amongst the worst movies I've seen. Now, I do have some explaining to do, so bear with me. Turning Red is number 3 on my list. First, let me just clarify that I know I'm not the target audience for this coming-of-age movie. I get it. But the problem is, Pixar never needed a target audience in the past. They had the ability to reach every single person whatever the story was. So that's one major strike agains this weird film. Also, I'm not one of those people who say this was an inappropriate movie for my kids. Sure, it was a little early for them to watch, seeing as it dealt mostly with puberty and periods, but I think it stayed well within the bounds of acceptability, and for that I give it credit. I think the idea for the story is actually pretty great. But it just felt so rushed, like the movie was trying to get to the big explosive climax as quickly as possible. I don't know, maybe it's just me and my inability to connect with moms and grandmas and daughters all fighting it out dressed as giant red pandas. So for me this film is firmly toward the bottom of my list, but I get it if it's higher on your list. All I'm saying is, and I don't know if I influenced them or not, that my kids even though it was a weird movie. Pixar is better than this. They should know better. But I will say, I forget when he did or said (there's my bad memory again), but the dad totally stole the movie for me. Two left. Number 9 is Uncharted. This movie was boooooring. It was predictable in the absolute worst way. It was unfunny, even though I really like Mark Wahlberg - I just had the sense that he didn't want to be there. Tom Holland was still Spider-Man in every way. Did I mention this was the most predictable movie I've ever seen? The screenwriters weren't even trying to shock us, and I say shame on them. If you can't give us something new, then don't write. I will say, the flying ships as the end was pretty cool, so I would recommend you YouTube that, but skip the rest of this trash pile movie. And that leaves us with number 10, the absolute worst movie of 2022. But first a word from my sponsor. It pains me so deeply to say this, but Jurassic Park: Dominion sucked, sucked, sucked so bad. One of the guys I was with was ready to walk out 15 minutes in. This movie did EVERYthing wrong. Absolutely everything. So much, that I don't even know where to begin. But first, how did we get from the majesty and glory of 1993 Jurassic Park to this toilet water? I mean, how is it possible that these two films are even related? In my mind, they're not. Not even close. It's like comparing Goodfellas to Clifford the Big Red Dog. What's so bothersome about Jurassic World: Dominion is that it had the blueprint laid down for it. It's like one of those situations where I get to yell, "You had ONE job!" Except, I never get to yell that, my wife does. But they couldn't even pull off a movie about dinosaurs chasing people and eating them. No, they had to do this weird mosquito subplot, with chicken dinosaurs (okay, the chicken dinosaur was the one cool thing in this movie, but it was so freaking brief), and some stupid thing about a little-girl clone. Did ANYbody ask for this movie? Actually, yes. Everyone wanted what Universal had been advertising for over a year. Remember that short film called Battle at Big Rock? Check that shit out! That 10-minute film was better than Fallen Kingdom and Dominon put together. It gave us what we were promised and what everyone on literally planet earth wanted. Did I put "literally" in the wrong place there? That's how flustered I am. Guys, I have a whole podcast on just how much of a shit-show this movie was. Check it out: It's episode 14. But all we wanted was a movie about the dangerous world of dinosaurs and humans cohabitating, but instead we got some idiot-ass movie about an underworld where they needed something, that I can't even remember. And as far as I can tell, not one single animatronic. What made them think 100% CGI was the way to go? I'll relent, I think the raptor heads were robots, but that's about it. I mean, they had the original cast handed to them on a golden plate with a sign that said: "You're welcome, have fun!" But even they were delegated to the most asinine and pointless storyline. They had Laura Dern say, "You can slip into my DM's." Was this movie written by a bunch of brain-dead millennials? I don't say this often, but every writer and unit director and producer needs to be fired or banned from Hollywood for five years. But that won't happen because people out there liked it and kept going back to see it to give this nipple-circus money. So! How's that for ending on a positive note? Sorry folks, I can't do it today. I've had a terrible week and I've been forced to revisit Jurassic Park: Dominion in the dark recesses of my mind. But the silver lining is that the next episode will be all about the best movies of 2022, so it'll end on a real head-lifter, and no, Top Gun: Maverick is NOT the number one movie on that list, surprisingly, though it was close. I'm talking, splitting Tom Cruise's beautiful hair. Yes, I have a huge man crush on Mr. Curise and also on the A-lister who's in my number one movie. If you have a movie you want me to review, old or new, email me at author.andrewtoy@gmail.com. I'd be super honored if you'd leave a review and rate my show because I've been told that's what helps the show grow. Although as of now, 11 people have rated my show and only one has left a review. And that one was my wife, and I'm pretty sure she was responsible for at least five of those 11 reviews. To be honest, I'm a bit butt-hurt by that. I see the downloads, the downloads are kicking in like crazy, so I know people are out there listening. I just can't believe that everyone out there is Switzerland and have no opinion. Write in, let me know what you think. Oh, and I'm going to leave you with a question I want you to answer for me. Call or text; I might play your answer on the next episode. The question is, what are the top 3 worst movies you saw last year? And they don't even have to be made in 2022. It could be something from 2002 you picked up from the library, you've been told for the last 20 years that it's the greatest movie ever and when you watched it, you began to question society as a whole. Text your answer to 863-303-6268 and leave your name and where you live. Remember, for every bad movie out there, there's half of a good movie somewhere else. Jared, Oriana and Ned continue our own epic trilogy with a look at our collective choice of topic: Peter Jackson's version of The Two Towers. Turning 20 years old this month, The Two Towers built on the success of the previous year's The Fellowship of the Ring, becoming another holiday blockbuster and continuing the overall story, as well as introducing the wider world to a variety of striking performances, among them Bernard Hill as Theoden, Miranda Otto as Eowyn and most famously and indelibly, Andy Serkis's compelling performance as Gollum, further interpreted by the Weta digital effects team to bring the character to life as an animation. All three of us have our own distinct memories and experiences of watching it for the first time and we've seen it any number of times since, but returning to it as a standalone film – as with our previous Fellowship episode, we went back to the original theatrical cut – made something clear to us: it's not all that great. Many different moments are absolutely indelible as already noted and there's no way something like The Rings of Power can even come close to it, but compared to the absolute triumph of Jackson's Fellowship, his Two Towers is the odd one out of the series as a whole. What about the structure of the story as adapted, filmed and edited meant that this might have always been the weak center of the sequence? What moments in particular are absolutely perfect – and what decisions are baffling then and now? Exactly how much Helm's Deep did there have to be in the first place – and do all the decisions that go into the making of that sequence as being central rest on the best foundation? And how great does Serkis's performance and the realization of Gollum as a character remain overall? (Answer: utterly.)SHOW NOTES.Jared's doodle. If that seems familiar, look back a year…Follow the HarperCollins Union Twitter feed for strike news.Andy Serkis reading the Silmarillion? We are intrigued, we are. Hail and farewell to Jules Bass.We do recommend relistening to our Fellowship episode; plenty of relevant show notes too.The Frodo Franchise is a very good read for sure. The original teaser trailer attached to the end of The Fellowship of the Ring at the conclusion of that film's theatrical run.The first official trailer is good, no question, but the second one with the Requiem for a Dream music? Man oh man. Kazaa! Ah Internet nostalgia. Phew, that opening scene. What a way to start up again. We do miss the Huorns, even if they showed up a little bit in the extended version – but not by name. It's a mix of perfect moments and ‘hmmm' bits but the whole start to the Helm's Deep battle definitely is key to the film.Arwen was indeed filmed at being at Helm's Deep and there are background images of her here and there. (Lindsay Ellis's essay the other month has a bit more about that.)Zulu, the British film from 1964 that inspired Jackson's take on Helm's Deep, is…a caution. (As stated, Zulu Dawn is more interesting in comparison.)The look on Theoden's face after he takes in the explosion – that's good acting.Edoras, an absolute triumph of set design, construction, visual effects and cinematography – so it was, so it remains. (Here's a visit to the set area on Mt. Sunday from a couple of years ago.)Feel free to pick up a copy of The Deadwood Bible by Matt Zoller Seitz if you like, and appreciate Oriana's work helping make it happen!Brad Dourif's tear (and the scene overall). Wormtongue's confrontation scene with Eowyn is in the Edoras clip linked above. The Eowyn/Aragorn blade clash/confrontation scene? Good, good stuff. (The warg attack scene, less so.)Where to begin with Gollum? Frustratingly the extended Two Towers documentary segment on Gollum doesn't appear to be on YouTube but Serkis's book on working on the character is easily available and a very good read.Do you really want to know about the monkey from the 1997 Lost in Space? Do you? Fine. Enjoy a video tribute. Now Gollum does act like a cat here, true. And the ‘yeees?!?' moment remains awesome. The self-confrontation scene. You know it.“PO-TA-TOES.”The buildup to Gollum snarling “My PRECIOUS!” at Faramir is truly striking.David Wenham dealing with Van Helsing. The film that is. (And yeah yeah 300.)Gandalf returns and Ian McKellen's hair levels up.The whole “give up the weapons/wink/'I TOLD you to take the WIZARD'S STAFF'” sequence – just a treat. The meat was always on the menu, really.“The Riders of Rohan” is one of Howard Shore's most gripping pieces, still.“Gollum's Song” is really good if you haven't heard it in a bit. (Emiliana Torrini's website will be back soon, it seems.)Sheila Chandra = next level. As is “Breath of Life.”Isabel Bayrakdarian = also next level, and so is “Evenstar.”“The Last March of the Ents” is another remarkable moment of music. “Release the RIVER!”Support By-The-Bywater and our network, Megaphonic, on Patreon and you can hang out with us on a friendly Discord!
