Griffith...is...back. But Griffith don't GOT back, because we know he still retains his little flat buns despite his divine reincarnation into non-astral flesh. Zodd is his big ridin' pony, he saves Casca (surprising even unto himself), and starts amassing a crew against a major Kushan attack against Midland. Ah yes: Puck determines Guts' and crew's ultimate destination for about the next fifteen years of publishing.
It's been quite a while, both in the original timeline of readers of the Berserk Manga, and in the lives of the characters themselves, that Guts and Casca have been in the same room with each other. Unfortunately…Casca is trapped in a room where a pagan cult is hosting a “naked party” where she will be forced to “mingle” with a half-man/half-goat demon creature with a snake boner. On a more touching note, however, Isidro and Guts' casual bro bond also grows in these chapters, where Guts is slowly starting to realize that, ultimately, to truly defy causality and destroy the Godhand some day…he won't be able to do it alone. Who ever thought a Guts-free set of chapters could be so compelling?! Not us, but we were plum surprised. These chapters are setting the stage for major future events in ways we never realized on previous reads of the series. Everyone's favorite character Nina gets introduced, and we learn a lot more about Mozgus, his torturers, Luca and her colleagues, and the seemingly protective power of the Demon Infant with Casca (aka "Elaine"). Ooooooh...and a pretty pornographic orgy happening as well.
It's been awhile but Ben and Paul are back to talk about the newest volume, fully translated by fans.
Visions in hypnagogic states, deep introspection, and the ouroboros of prophecy vs. causality abound in these chapters as we learn more about Farnesse's religiously driven sexual repression, Zodd's first interaction with his new and future master, and Guts getting an emotional truth-bomb dropped on his face for leaving Casca and Rickert alone for two years so he could selfishly focus on revenge. Miura never lets you feel exactly the same about characters for very long…even the ones we're supposed to love. It's part of his mastery, and part of what makes Berserk so damn compelling chapter after chapter. The Holy Iron Chain chapters of the Conviction Arc present some really cool dynamics into the characters, story, and world building of Berserk - namely the almost “anti-Casca” that is Farnesse. We also get the juxtaposition of the Holy See's perceived religious mythology with Guts and Puck's very much lived experiences. Faith vs. Horror, Light is Dark, Dark is light, etc. Very rich stuff here. Ooooooooooh…and we get the infamous FARNESSE HORSE SCENE!!! Honestly that's all you needed to know to listen. The Great Eclipse begins as our coverage of Berserk (1997) comes to a close. A year has passed since Guts left the Band of the Hawk, who are now outlaws wanted for treason. Griffith, overcome with despair, remains imprisoned in the depths of the Tower of Rebirth. Though Guts and his allies manage to rescue Griffith, the fallen hero is unable to come to terms with his shattered dream. Giving his flesh and blood to the Crimson Beherit, Griffith brings his comrades into the nightmarish Astral Realm. There, the four demonic sovereigns of the God Hand appear and offer Griffith a place at their side. Guts, Casca, and the rest of the Band of the Hawk fight until the bitter end as the God Hand claims them as sacrifices. As Griffith is reborn, Guts stands to lose everything he holds dear. In the aftermath of The Eclipse, Guts must choose how to move forward with new limitations and truths. These chapters are exposition-heavy, but fascinating in how they establish the “new normal” of Berserk from here on out. The Golden Age Arc is the most well-known arc for sure, and the story becomes much more dynamic as new challenges and characters are introduced into Guts' merry band of travelers. But let's not put the cart before the proverbial Farnesse-horse! In this episode we get the first (chronologically) appearance of Guts black armor, his throwing knives, his metal cannon arm, and, of course, The Dragon Slayer. We also get a deeper artistic focus on the natural world as opposed to the technological wonders of man, further showcasing the shift in Guts and Casca's existence. Enjoy!
