Listeners of Home One Radio that love the show mention:A continuation of Episode 162, Josh is joined by guest co-host David Atwell to discuss Star Wars Infinities. In this extra content, David and Josh take the conceit of the Infinities stories and apply them to the Prequel and Sequel trilogies. What if Qui-Gon hadn't died at the end of The Phantom Menace? What if Order 66 fails in Revenge of the Sith and the Jedi prevail over Palpatine/Sidious? What If the Holdo Maneuver kills Kylo? All these are possible situations we cover in this episode. Hope you enjoy listening as much as we enjoyed coming up with the scenarios. Like us on Facebook Follow us on Twitter Follow us on Instagram
We're back! After COVID-19 made recording nearly impossible to record, we've finally managed to right the ship. Home One is back up and running but with a temporary co-pilot. Josh is joined by his fellow Reel World Theology staffer, David Atwell, to discuss Star Wars: Infinities. This Legends series from Dark Horse posits an alternate version of each original trilogy movie. We discuss the surprises, the intriguing new realities built, and how awesome Yoda is in these stories. We're glad to be back and we hope you enjoy our discussion! Like us on Facebook Follow us on Twitter Follow us on Instagram
It’s finally real! After saying we’ve done it on multiple occasions, only to be proven wrong, we’ve actually recorded a Star Wars Film School on Miyazaki! For those who don’t know much about the creative head of Studio Ghibli, we introduce the man and his movies before diving in. Mostly spent talking new canon, we discuss Star Wars Rebels, Star Wars Resistance, and The Force Awakens. It also leads us into the possible different path The Rise of Skywalker could have taken given Rey’s connections to one particular Miyazaki movie. It’s an episode we are really proud of so we hope you enjoy it!
It’s a real “hush-hush” kinda episode this week as we discuss some video game rumors and try to put out the already growing fires of retcon controversy surrounding The Rise of Skywalker novelization. Everyone needs to calm down and enjoy Star Wars, so that’s what we do!
As Blaine always tells his students, it’s always best to turn in your homework late than not at all. Even though Blaine was sick and had the due date extended, we are still late to the party with our study guide for all you The Clone Wars newbies. It’s more of a cram session now, but still, a helpful episode, especially if you have never seen the show and wondering what it’s all about. Plus, Blaine panders to our super-fan, Blake, and Josh really, really, really, really, really, really likes what Blaine has to say.
Blaine has finally got his voice back and that means we’re back to regularly scheduled programming! We discuss the recent reveal of Project Luminous and what has us the most excited from this new era of Star Wars. It’s an all-literary episode that has these two novel nerds beyond excited.
Before we discussed the Star Wars Resistance finale in our last episode, Josh asked Brian and Joe to share some of their thoughts about the first episode of Season 7 of The Clone Wars. Enjoy this short, extra episode and keep listening for more discussions of Season 7 of The Clone Wars and possibly some other guests joining us to talk about it!
In the absence of a sick, voice-less Blaine, Josh enlists the help of Joe Corroney and Brian Miller to discuss the final episodes of Star Wars Resistance for our final Resistance Report. After giving Joe and Brian a chance to give their overall impressions of the show, specifically Season 2, we discuss how Resistance wrapped up, what made it particularly resonant as a Star Wars story, and what was truly excellent about it’s short, two-season run. Plus, Josh is pushed into an uncomfortable position and Joe unveils the origins of Opeepit’s species. Enjoy our discussion of a show we hope gives its characters a new life somewhere else in Star Wars!
Recent footage has surfaced rumored to be from the defunct Star Wars: Underworld TV show Lucasfilm was developing in the mid-to-late-2000’s. Germain Lussier writes an article for iO9 breaking down the footage and essentially confirms its authenticity. We discuss the footage, Lussier’s article, and what are thoughts are on the footage and behind-the-scenes production we get to see. Plus, Josh shares a little bit about the Google Doc attached to the footage which goes deep into the history of the production and how it did expand on canonical content.
Some of our favorite books to read are the post-movie Visual Dictionaries. Pablo Hidalgo’s latest contribution does not disappoint and sheds a lot of light on a movie we are still coming to grips with. We discuss some of the important elements that help us parse out The Rise of Skywalker, as well as plucking out our favorite parts highlighting what we loved about the movie. We manage to keep it pretty brief considering the large amount in the book by sharing three items each and then some final thoughts. Enjoy!
Our news show is back, but we’re discussing some disappointing news in the Star Wars world. Don’t worry, it’s not that bad, but there are definitely some changes to some things we love and were anticipating in 2020. Blaine keeps us on task and Josh takes the blue-theme a little too far. We will be back with news every week for the foreseeable future, or at least until more TV shows come out. Continuing our discussions of The Rise of Skywalker, we invite back Joe Corroney and Brian Miller, two great Star Wars artists, to discuss their thoughts on Episode IX! We talk about what we loved about the story, also if Palpatine was in the plans all along, plus the future of Star Wars after the Skywalker saga. You’ll definitely want to hear Joe and Brian’s thoughts on the movie as well as some in-depth answers on how they approach telling stories with their art.Joe Corroney’s WebsiteJoe Corroney’s InstagramJoe Corroney on TwitterOktopolis Art - Internet home of Brian MillerOktopolis on InstagramOktopolis on Twitter
One of the few traditions on our show is to have Chad Hopkins from The Cinescope Podcast on to talk new movie soundtracks with us. The final chapter of the Skywalker saga is no exception and Chad is back to discuss John Williams’ final foray into a galaxy far, far away! We discuss our favorite pieces of music, the thematic relationship between Kylo and Rey’s themes, as well as digging down into some of the more interesting pieces of music. Plus, we lock Chad in for another episode in the future and have some fun with who we think would make great composers in the Star Wars going forward. Enjoy this episode and Chad’s expertise.Chad on TwitterThe Cinescope PodcastAn American Workplace Podcast
Resistance episodes didn’t slow down over the holidays, and we’re getting caught up on all the December goodness with our latest Resistance Report! We cover the episodes “Kaz’s Curse”, “Station to Station”, “The Missing Agent”, and “Breakout”. There are appearances by movie characters, connections to The Rise of Skywalker and SNL, and some all-important Kaz-tastrophe humor in these episodes. We discuss what we loved about these episodes and what could possibly be the endgame of the show as there are five more episodes on the docket for January. Enjoy our discussion of these episodes for our Resistance Report!
The final episode of Season One of The Mandalorian means we have to pull out all the stops! We invite on previous interview guest, JR Forasteros, and avid non-Star wars fan but a fan of us, Blake Collier, to discuss the season finale. We talk about what we liked about the episode, how the story was told in season one, and a little bit of speculation on season two and beyond. Also, we dive a bit into some Mandalorian lore to educate JR and Blake on the surprise ending. A very exciting episode with some very fun guests!
Our first foray into Star Wars in 2020 is a slight detour from all our The Rise of Skywalker and The Mandalorian talk as we discuss the video game tie-in comic, Jedi Fallen Order Dark Temple! The comic is surprisingly helpful in fleshing out Cere’s story, as well as giving us a unique glimpse of the Jedi at work before the start of the prequel trilogy. We enjoyed this comic and we think you will, too, especially if you are playing or have played Jedi: Fallen Order.
The holiday logjam continues to be cleared as we discuss the next four episodes of Star Wars Resistance! Diving right in with episode 6, “From Beneath”, we then get into an episode tying right into The Rise of Skywalker, “Relic Raisers”. Then the plot thickens as a new character pops up with an interesting history in “Rendezvous Point”, and last, but certainly not least, we meet a slimy Hutt looking to profit from the Colossus crew’s need in “The Voxx Vortex 5000”. We hope you enjoy our discussion of these four episodes of this great show!
Blaine and Josh welcome back Gabe Green from the Franchise Fatigue Podcast and Josh Mesker from The Outer Rim Star Wars Facebook Group to discuss the penultimate episode of Season One. The main characters of the show are all united for this episode full of risk and possible reward. We talk about what this episode could mean for the finale, what lies ahead for the story arc of “The Child”, as well as our favorite moments including Rebels callbacks and Breaking Bad reunions. This high-quality episode is well worth the hour we spent discussing it and we hope it leaves you ready for the season finale!
It’s just the two of us as we discuss, quite possibly, the best episode of the season, so far. Rick Famuyiwa is back in the director’s chair for this episode where the Mandalorian has to reunite with old partners for a risky job breaking out a prisoner from a New Republic prison ship. We talk about the fabulous direction in this episode by Famuyiwa, as well as the cavalcade of guests stars both familiar and new to the Star Wars universe. Enjoy our guestless roundtable episode and our review of “The Prisoner”!
The end of the Skywalker saga has arrived with The Rise of Skywalker! We sit down after our initial viewings and share our first reactions. We talk about if we actually liked the movie—spoiler alert, we did—and then we discuss some of the things we didn’t like before we finish talking about what we love. As our previous “First Reaction” episodes have been, it’s a little rambling and easy-going, but we still dive into some details of the movie and some of the filmmaking choices. We still have plenty to say so tune in later this weekend for a big review!A big warning, there be spoilers ahead! DO NOT listen to this episode if you do not want to be spoiled before seeing The Rise of Skywalker. You have been warned.
Season 1, Episode 5 of The Mandalorian returns to a familiar location as “Mando” and the “The Child” stop for fuel and repairs. We invite Star Wars artist Joe Corroney on the show to discuss the positive fan service of this episode, the twists and turns the Mandalorian encounters while tracking down a quarry, as well as our favorite moments harkening back to everything from animated shows to movies. Plus, Joe shares some mind-blowing speculation about the mysterious final moment of this episode we think you will like as much as we did.
Psychometry has been an important aspect of the Force and the Jedi since Rey touched Anakin’s lightsaber in The Force Awakens. It continued with Cal Kestis in Jedi: Fallen Order and is an integral part of the game, but Kevin Shinick’s Force Collector technically came out first and is the first story to prominently feature this Force power. We discuss how Karr Nuq Sin, the main character of Shinick’s book, uses the power to tell the story of Star Wars, as well as what it could mean for future stories. We really enjoyed this book and we hope you enjoy our conversation!
With half the first season gone in The Mandalorian, the show has started to dive deeper into our main character, as well as introducing a new, much anticipated one. We are joined by Josh Mesker from The Outer Rim Facebook Group to discuss the more deliberate, contemplative episode of the show. We touch on the continuing Samurai and Western influences on the show, some of the deepening of The Mandalorian, as well as the fate of Baby Yoda. It’s a great episode filled with some excellent discussion and the guest appearance of the force ghost of Gabe Green!
It’s been a couple of years since our last review of a video game, but the long wait is finally over. We are joined by Aaron White of Feelin’ Film to discuss the ins and outs of Jedi: Fallen Order, the new Star Wars video game from EA and Respawn. Since we focus on where a love of Star Wars and story meet, most of our time is spent discussing the characters, themes, and relationships in the main story. However, with the help of an avid game like Aaron, we also talk about game mechanics and how it rates versus other releases of 2019. Enjoy our discussion with Aaron about this incredible new game!
The third episode of The Mandalorian, “The Sin”, might be the tipping point for many people on the fence about the show and it also might swell the ranks of the Mandalorian Mercs. An intense, sensational episode sees our eponymous hero return the quarry, regret his decision, and then go on a rampage to right the wrong. We are joined by Aaron White from Feelin’ Film to discuss what the Mandalorian’s sin might be, the expanding lore of Mandalore and the Great Purge, as well as the final, breathtaking action sequence.
In the midst of all these new Star Wars releases, we take some time to review the legendary Paul Hirsch’s new book, A Long Time Ago In A Cutting Room Far, Far Away. Paul edited Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back and many other culturally significant movies. We discuss how the introduction is worth the whole book, share some of our favorite stories, and spend most of our time discussing the ins and outs of his time working with George and Marcia Lucas. This is a really great book and you can listen to this review whether you have read the book or not!
Over the initial hype of episode one, we’re back to discuss the second, surprisingly shorter, episode “The Child” with David Atwell from Reel World Theology, our mothership podcast! Introducing everyone in the world to perhaps the cutest character in Star Wars history, The Mandalorian must take his now captured quarry home. However, he is waylaid by vicious Trandoshans, scavenging Jawas, and hairy beasts/eggs. We discuss how this episode captures what we love about Star Wars, as well as what it means for our The Mandalorian and his ultra-cute companion.David’s Article on “The Child” for RWT
A book we have been highly anticipating has finally arrived and it does not disappoint. Taking place after the events of The Last Jedi, Rebecca Roanhorse’s novel is about how the Resistance copes with it’s near obliteration on D’Qar and Crait. Connecting years of Star Wars stories stretching all the way back to The Force Awakens, this book is a huge payoff for fans who have been voraciously consuming Star Wars material in the new canon. You’ll be surprised, excited, shocked, and maybe a little wistful as familiar heroes new and old work together to rebuild the Resistance from nothing as the First Order tightens its grip on the galaxy.
It’s finally here! Disney+ arrived with over 10 million subscribers in one day and The Mandalorian was a big reason why. Blaine and Josh welcome Gabe Green from the Franchise Fatigue Podcast and Josh Mesker from The Outer Rim Star Wars Facebook Group for our very first roundtable discussion of the show. Together they discuss Dave Filoni’s live-action directorial debut, what they loved about the show, what surprised them, and how this brand-new story has begun to unfold. Enjoy the discussion and keep coming back as each and every episode of The Mandalorian will feature other amazing guests!
We kick off the rust and put some fresh oil in our Star Wars Resistance Report jalopy and get it started up for the return of Season 2 of Star Wars Resistance! We discuss the Season 2 premiere “In the Unknown”, as well as “A Quick Salvage Run”, “Live Fire”, “Hunt on Celsor 3”, and “The Engineer”. Although we feel the first episode feels a bit like the loading screen for the rest of the season, once it kicks into gear, the episodes get back into creating new crazy adventures for the characters we love. Plus, Josh wants to talk about how messed up the First Order is and Blaine spurns #Reylo in favor of #Neekna. Enjoy our discussion of the first five episodes of the final season of Resistance!
We conclude unofficial Cavan Scott month with a review of his newest comic series, Return to Vader’s castle. The story riffs off of the previous series but tells 5 stories in 5 issues from the perspectives of Vader’s servant, Vaneé, and his captive, a familiar face we do not meet until into the stories. We discuss why this series is right in our wheelhouse and is some of the best comics in all of Star Wars. From the riffing on classic monster stories like Dracula and Night of the Living Dead to the pathos of a failed Tarkin Initiative weapon, these five issues are just what the Halloween-loving Star Wars fan wants.
With a new Mandalorian trailer and Weiss and Benioff leaving their Star Wars project, we have plenty to talk about this week. We don’t go super in-depth on the trailer, but we definitely anticipate the new show and share some news for Home One Radio related to it. It’s a really fun episode with Josh going on a rant and Blaine trying his hand at a Mario/Dracula impression. We’ve been waiting to get around to this comic series for a couple of months and we have finally gotten to it! Featuring the writing of Jody Houser, who we loved in the Age of Republic series, this comic ties-in to the Alexander Freed novel, Alphabet Squadron. We discuss the story’s surprising humanizing of Imperials as Shadow Wing, the nemesis of Alphabet Squadron, takes on a group of rebels, but not the rebels you would expect. Enjoy our review and make sure you read Alphabet Squadron and listen to our episode on it!Home One Radio Episode #128 - Alphabet Squadron
With the much-hyped release of the final trailer for The Rise of Skywalker, we discuss the refreshing lack of plot details in the trailer and how it leaves us with the right amount of excitement, emotion, and questions. Are Rey and Kylo working together? Why is C-3PO saying goodbye? Is the Emperor really that important? These are a handful of the topics we explore plus we recount our favorite parts. We are sufficiently psyched for opening night!
Unofficial Cavan Scott month continues as we review the brand-new Choose Your Destiny book, A Finn & Poe Adventure! Taking place after the events of The Last Jedi, the Resistance is still on the lookout for more supplies. Finn and Poe are tasked with securing bacta, a crucial medical supply, for the Resistance. We discuss Cavan’s incredible ability to quickly embody Poe and Finn, how to choose wisely, as well as how Finn is the glue between all the main characters in the Sequel trilogy. Enjoy this book with your kids and look for some more Cavan-talk in a couple of episodes!
It’s not really a long episode, but it’s all about the release of Disney+ content. We focus on Star Wars content real quick and then we spend a little time talking outside Star Wars by sharing what we’re looking forward to from Disney+’s impressive amount of content coming out when it launches on November 12th. Less than a month away! Its basically all Disney+ talk so there is no need for show notes this week!
Our first foray into the Journey to the Rise of Skywalker books is a discussion of Justina Ireland’s Spark of the Resistance! In one of our first glimpses of the post-The Last Jedi, we see a Resistance broken and shattered by the events of Episode VIII but a group that is hopeful and already rebuilding. We discuss Rey, Poe, and Rose’s excursion to the unknown planet of Minfar and how this little planet filled with rabbit-like Zixon’s is the first step towards a rebuilt Resistance capable of defeating the First Order. Plus, Ireland continues to impress us with her ability to capture the spirit of the old Legends books like the L. Neil Smith Lando books and Brian Daley’s Han Solo trilogy from the late ’70s and early ’80s.
We recap all the Star Wars news from last weekend’s New York Comic-Con, including post-The Rise of Skywalker plans, a new Thrawn trilogy, and the very secretive Project Luminous. Plus, we talk about baseball a lot, for some reason. We apologize to all the Chicago-area fans out there for the very anti-Cubs talk from a Brewers fan and Cardinals fan.0:00 - Hello, there0:55 - Playoff baseball and anti-Cubs talk6:30 - NYCC Publishing announcements17:30 - Star Wars-adjacent TV recommendations
Welcome to the start of our unofficial Cavan Scott month! The majority of our October 2019 episodes feature reviews and discussions of Cavan Scott’s books. We kick it off by catching up on last year’s Tales From Vader’s Castle. We welcome the return of Lina Graf, Crater, and Vader’s attendant Vaneé. Hitting right in our sweet spot, this comic series is all about the power of story and how things that scare us can help us learn and grow as a person. This comic series is so wonderful and we hope you enjoy our discussion of the power of story and Star Wars.
We’re not at the store, we’re stuck podcasting about new merchandise for Star Wars Resistance, The Mandalorian, and The Rise of Skywalker. Plus, we share our mutual excitement for Babu Frik and the premiere of Season 2 of Star Wars Resistance! Yay! It’s a great week of news and I’m sure we will be back early next week to talk news from NYCC.
It’s been a wonderful, long journey at sublight speed through each “Age Of” comic series but we have finally reached the end. It ends on a high note as Age of Resistance proved to tell a lot of compelling stories that fill us in on important character traits and motivations as their journeys come to an end in The Rise of Skywalker. We discuss Finn’s anomalous behavior for a stormtrooper, as well as Poe’s surprising seeds of joining the Resistance. Plus, these comics weave in the embodiment of the Resistance, the loving, fiery heart of General Leia Organa, and how she passes it on to Rose and Rey. Finally, we get to see Kylo Ren unleash the power of the Dark Side and take on a familiar indestructible beast. It’s all so great and though we still loved Age of Republic a little more, we still have a lot of great things to say about these Age of Resistance comics.
It’s officially Fall and that means sickness is striking down both of us. However, it’s the best kind of sickness as we have come down with Star Wars fever. With a bevy of Star Wars news to cover, we discuss Triple Force Friday, the new Jedi: Fallen Order trailer and a smattering of TV series news. It’s a fever-pitched week that only promises to intensify as we approach The Rise of Skywalker in December.
It has been a long journey, but we’ve finally reached the final “Age Of” series of comics and some of the most anticipated one-shots in the whole series! We kick off our discussion of the Age of Resistance comics by talking about Snoke and his training of Kylo Ren/Ben Skywalker. Shades of TLJ show themselves before moving on to two comics about really nasty, ruthless villains in the Hux and Phasma comics. These comics are an intriguing blend of things to come and also surprisingly spend time focusing on Snoke and Hux’s tenuous relationships with Kylo. We discuss all of this and Phasma’s continuing penchant for “survival at all costs” on this week’s episode.
After recent comments by Jon Favreau about making a Star Wars Holiday Special for Disney+, we got to thinking about what we would envision a new Holiday Special looking like. So, we blue sky a little bit and imagine a new scenario, a new destination, and a new time period for Favreau’s Holiday Special. Then, we pick three sequences from the original and recast them for a brand-new special. We have a ton of fun in this episode and we legitimately think we have created a plausible, modern, still kinda campy Holiday Special. You have to listen to this episode!
Not even Blaine losing his voice could keep us from getting around to reviewing Delilah Dawson’s new Star Wars book, Galaxy’s Edge: Black Spire. We discuss how this book continues the story of Phasma and how its emotional resonance is owed to the great characters of Vi and Archex. We posit a bit more about how this book will tie-in to future content and it’s intriguing similarities to Star Wars Rebels. Enjoy our discussion and make sure to go visit Galaxy’s Edge!
After a relatively quiet Labor Day weekend, we’re discussing some potential leaks and spoilers of The Rise of Skywalker since the footage from D23. We won’t tell you what we talk about in this description, for those of you who want to avoid spoilers, but we will tell you not to listen if you don’t want to be spoiled or potentially spoiled.*SPOILERS AHOY* for The Rise of Skywalker! D23 2019 finally happened and it did not disappoint! We talk some of the Disney Parks news, including the Rise of the Resistance ride and Star Wars Hotel, the Halcyon. Also, the Disney+ announcements poured in and we revel in Blaine being wrong about the Obi-Wan Kenobi series. We discuss both the Mandalorian trailer in all it’s Herzog-filled wonder. And last, but certainly not least, we discuss the new footage from The Rise of Skywalker in the D23 Special Look trailer including red-saber Rey, tons of Imperial Star Destroyers, and what we think it could all mean.0:00 - Buckle up, baby3:54 - The Mandalorian18:10 - The Rise of Skywalker footage40:28 - Blaine is wrong - Kenobi talk45:08 - Disney Parks talk53:55 - Adios!
Is this even a real episode or a tale told around the hearth and passed down by generations? Only time will tell about this episode, but George Mann’s new book is filled with in-universe Star Wars stories spanning Tusken legends to Sith lore. From horror stories to morality tales, we discuss the entirety of a book seemingly made just for our podcast. Plus, we constantly praise Grant Griffin’s incredible artwork and muse about what a couple of stories could mean for future Star Wars.
Button your collar, grab your briefcase, and shine your shoes, this week we’re all business. We discuss the hopes and dreams of Hollywood for The Rise of Skywalker, some really awesome cosplaying, and then Blaine brings up the Obi-Wan TV Series on Disney+. This week’s episode finds us walking the streets of Black Spire Outpost, a place we will be returning to often in future episodes. We discuss Zoraida Cordova’s new YA Novel, A Crash of Fate. We discuss how the book takes many familiar Star Wars tropes and familiar YA beats for a solid story. We also get into this book being the first foray into Black Spire Outpost and how the ending might reveal some of what we will see in future books or other media. If you are looking for a fast-moving, quality YA novel set in a place that will be a big part of future Star Wars material, this is the book for you!
Josh has returned from visiting Galaxy’s Edge and has a full report of how awesome it was.
