In this episode of the EMS One-Stop podcast, our host, Rob Lawrence, sits down with Hollywood actor Rainn Wilson, who stars as Randy in “Code 3.” Known worldwide for his role as Dwight Schrute in The Office, Wilson has stepped into the world of EMS, portraying the life of a burned-out paramedic with both grit and humor. In the conversation, Wilson reflects on the process of bringing this story to life, his ride-along experiences in Los Angeles, and the powerful realities he uncovered about our profession. More than just a performance, Rainn has become an unexpected advocate for EMS. He speaks candidly about the underfunding of frontline providers, the emotional toll of the work and the sheer humanity that comes with being welcomed into people's lives during their most vulnerable moments. Alongside the serious themes, he reminds us that Code 3 is also a comedy — one that captures the gallows humor, camaraderie and resilience medics carry with them on every shift. | MORE: Why ‘Code 3' might be the most honest EMS film yet. From a ticking salary counter to fourth-wall confessions, this EMS road movie isn't just another Hollywood take. It's a love letter, a warning and a mirror. Memorable quotes from Rainn Wilson “Most of all, I just fell in love with the character of Randy.” “Bottom line, the fact that first responders are getting basically what people that work at Starbucks are getting paid really blew my mind.” “Well, one thing I never thought of, maybe stupidly so, is how vulnerable everything is because you're going into people's homes and they're in crisis.” “I think Rob, no one should be allowed to graduate from high school without their kind of basic CPR training.” “Everything about EMS — the tone, the vibe, the gallows humor, certainly all the technical medical elements, the burnout, the camaraderie, the idea that there's a mission here — they do it because they love it.” “Well, it was an honor to learn about this world and to make a movie that these workers are excited about and proud of.” “I want to say from the bottom of my heart, you know, ‘thank you. This week on Inside EMS, Chris Cebollero welcomes Patrick Pianezza — former EMS Leadership podcast co‑host, paramedic and co-writer on the new action-comedy EMS film ‘Code 3.' Pianezza teamed up with writer Christopher Leone to push for authenticity, insisting on medical accuracy and avoiding cliches — no guns‑in‑ambulance heroics, no patients as punchlines. There are scenes that will make medics say, “That's us!” — from nursing home calls to behavioral health crises, the pressures from society, as well as moments many will recognize in their gut. For EMS professionals, this is about being seen, valued and having your story told well. For everyone else, it's an invitation to look deeper at the people showing up to help you on your worst day. Memorable quotes “What I really care about, what I want people to take away from the movie, especially if you're still actively doing the job, is that they feel recognized. They feel seen, they feel like we did them justice.” — Patrick Pianezza “CPR is so terribly shown on screen that we were committed to like, at least one movie's gonna get it right.” — Patrick Pianezza “There is a heart to it that I think is universal and speaks to not just people who do the job, but for outsiders to get a view into this world and be like, ‘Oh, so that's what this job is.'” — Patrick Pianezza Additional resources: Burnout, bravery and gratitude: The story behind ‘Code 3' Why ‘Code 3' might be the most honest EMS film yet ‘Code 3': A love letter to fire and EMS Enjoying the show? When they were shooting the pilot episode of ‘The Office,' Steve Carell told Rainn Wilson that playing Dwight Schrute could change his life forever. And he could not have been more right. In this episode, Wilson breaks down his unique career journey from working character actor to sitcom star all the way through his latest film ‘Code 3' (in theaters Friday Sept. 12) in which he plays a burnt out paramedic alongside fellow comedian Lil Rel Howery. His role in the new movie, as well as much of what he has done since ‘The Office' ended in 2013, feels very different from Dwight, and purposefully so. Wilson opens up about the massive blessing and occasional curse of being so closely associated with such a hugely popular character. Addressing the perennial question about whether ‘The Office' could be made today, he admits that the “clueless, insensitive, racist, sexist” jokes hit differently now. Wilson also reveals the “relief” he felt when NBC killed off a Dwight-centered spinoff and shares whether that character could ever pop up on the new Peacock spinoff ‘The Paper'—or perhaps even a movie version of ‘The Office.'Follow Rainn Wilson on Instagram @rainnwilsonFollow Matt Wilstein on Bluesky @mattwilstein Follow The Last Laugh on Instagram @lastlaughpodHighlights from this episode and others at The Daily Beast Hosted on Acast. “Code 3” — the action-comedy centered on a paramedic's life in crisis — hits select theaters this week, and co-writer Patrick Pianezza joins Better Every Shift to detail the behind-the-scenes movie magic that transformed his real-life EMS experiences into an independent film starring Rainn Wilson, Lil Rel Howery and Aimee Carrero. Pianezza, who also served as a volunteer firefighter, shares his process capturing both the pressures and the humanity of EMS work — all wrapped in some seriously dark humor — plus all this: The scene he loves that didn't make the movie The “Usual Suspects” moment that shifted the tone His push to “go darker” with the humor The medical scene they had to get right — his moviemaking “hill to die on” Read more about Code 3: Why ‘Code 3' might be the most honest EMS film yet This episode of the Better Every Shift Podcast is sponsored by TheFireStore. We're hearing from the family at the center of a confrontation at a Phillies game last week over a home run ball. Drew Feltwell came up with the ball after a scrum in the crowd and gave it to his son Lincoln. But a woman confronted Drew grabbing his arm and demanding the ball. Feltwell told CBS News Correspondent Cristian Benavides giving up the ball was worth much more than the souvenir. For our latest edition of "Never too Late" CBS News Bay Area Anchor Anne Makovec caught the acting bug at a young age, but life took her in a different direction. Recently, she got a chance to pull off something bold and become part of a "Beautiful" CBS soap opera. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor has made it her mission to help all children shine. The justice is a best-selling children's book author. Her latest is "Just Shine!: How to be a Better you." It tells the story of her mother, Celina, who helped everyone around her shine their brightest. She tells us all about it. The one and only Oprah is here to reveal her newest book club selection, only on CBS Mornings! For a very special talk of the table. One of the biggest names in stand-up comedy, Nate Bargatze is about to take another big step. The 46-year-old has been on an absolute tear. He sold more than 1.2 million tickets to his "The be Funny Tour" last year. It made him the highest-grossing comedian in the country. This Sunday may be his biggest gig yet. He's hosting the 77th Emmy Awards here on CBS and streaming on Paramount+. Actor Rain Wilson is now taking on a very different role from Dwight Schrute in "The Office." In a new action comedy called "Code 3." Wilson stars as Randy an underpaid, burned-out paramedic on his last 24-hour shift. What starts as a routine day spirals into a night full of chaos and emergencies. It's darkly comedic and deeply human and he tells us all about it. Just a Little Salt: Patrick Pianezza on ‘Code 3,' EMS Realism and Mental Health In this debut episode of Just a Little Salt, former paramedic and co-writer Patrick Pianezza shares the story behind the upcoming film “Code 3,” releasing September 12. Drawing on over a decade in EMS, Patrick reveals how a college creative writing assignment transformed into a heartfelt, medically accurate portrayal of a 24-hour shift's highs and lows. He discusses the film's unapologetic look at EMS challenges—including burnout, mental health struggles and systemic issues—while preserving dark humor and camaraderie that help first responders cope. Patrick also reflects on working closely with actors to capture authentic medical procedures and the importance of educating the public about the skill behind EMS work. Wrapping up with encouragement for aspiring writers, he offers raw insight into perseverance, creativity, and gratitude toward those who serve on the front lines.
In this episode of the EMS One-Stop podcast, host Rob Lawrence sits down with Patrick Pianezza, co-writer of the new EMS film “Code 3”, a deeply honest and compelling portrayal of life on the ambulance. The film stars Rainn Wilson (“The Office”), Lil Rel Howery (“Free Guy”) and Aimee Carrero (“Elena of Avalor”), delivering a powerful performance that captures both the pressures and the humanity of EMS work. Using real-world experiences and stories from the field, “Code 3” highlights the passion, dedication and emotional toll experienced by EMS professionals every day. From burnout, to systemic challenges, the movie invites the public into the high-stakes world of emergency medical services, showing both the challenges and the heart behind the uniform. Patrick and Rob discuss not only the storytelling process, but also the personal experiences that informed the movie. Pianezza candidly shares the emotional toll of EMS work, the reality of burnout and the importance of mental health support for first responders. This episode is both a celebration of the dedication of those who serve in 911 and a call for awareness and gratitude for the vital work they perform. “Code 3” opens in selected cinemas on Sept. 12, 2025. Memorable quotes “I remember going to one of my old bosses and saying, ‘I think I'm burning out.' The reaction I got was this dark chuckle … ‘We're all burnt out. Get back on the truck.' That kind of festering mentality is not healthy.” — Patrick Pianezza “Six out of six people that I have worked with have unfortunately [died by] suicide, and the suicide rates for first responders is double that of the regular population … which is a statistic we need to fix.” — Patrick Pianezza “And it is … a good representation of life on the truck, on the street, with a guy who's clearly burned out; but a person that cares, that has passion, commitment and will always do the right thing.” — Patrick Pianezza “There was no way to confront the story without talking about salaries, without talking about reimbursements … No one's gonna see a movie about Medicare, Medicaid, but we are as honest as we can be.” — Patrick Pianezza “This movie is nothing more than a gratitude tour for everyone who works in 911 … I'll be a broken record here: thank you for what it is that you do because it matters. I've been in those boots and I'm here to tell you thank you.” — Patrick Pianezza “And as I say in my review, those who know me know my ability to take tactical naps during movies. Well, this one got two eyes open and absolutely five stars.” — Rob Lawrence Episode timeline 00:00 – Introduction: Rob Lawrence introduces Patrick Pianezza and the film “Code 3” starring Rainn Wilson 02:31 – Origins of “Code 3:” How the project started and the vision behind telling an authentic EMS story 05:01 – Creative team & casting: working with actors, crew and Rainn Wilson 08:01 – On-the-Street authenticity: translating real EMS experiences into the film 12:01 – Depicting burnout: emotional and mental challenges in EMS work 16:01 – Mental health & seeking help: Autobiographical elements and confronting burnout 20:01 – Systemic issues: salaries, Medicare, and Medicaid reimbursement challenges 24:01 – Impact on families & relationships: emotional toll beyond the job 27:01 – Personal reflection: Patrick's journey, struggles and growth in EMS 29:01 – Gratitude tour: purpose of the film and acknowledging EMS professionals 32:01 – Closing thoughts: film release details, upcoming trailer and final messages of appreciation Enjoying the show? DTFF: The Volunteer Firefighter Podcast - Down To Fight Fire
E253 - Code 3 driving and ladder competency. This week we discuss some tips and tricks to code 3 driving. We follow that up with discussion on our skills night that seen crews throwing ladders on residential and commercial buildings as well as some quick chat on chimney fires WHO WE ARE As a group of Rural Volunteer Firefighters, our Fire Department has built our firefighter training from both old and new tactics in the fire service and adapted them to fit the realities of equipment, manpower, and costs around what our community requires. WHAT WE DO We create video, audio and written word content to share these training and tactics methods with our Brothers and Sisters in our extended fire families, and to showcase to those that may be interested in becoming firefighters the fun you can have and the amazing skills and abilities you get to learn, whilst keeping the lives of the people around you safe! WHY WE SHARE Firefighters are problem solvers whose role requires them to be on their best day whilst others are having their worst day, and while we do not claim to be perfect we are willing to put our lives on the line to try. It's during the trying that we continue to develop the mindset, tactics, and training that allow us to be effective, safe and successful where it's needed the most, and by sharing our experiences we hope that it may help other Fire Departments in creating what works for them to help bring everyone home safe. In this 3rd swapcast with Unlocking The Code, we explore the moon itself. How did it form? Did you know there's cultures on this planet with a distant memory without the moon? Did people actually go there? Is the secret space force up there working with ET's? Is the moon an ancient hollowed out spaceship? We inject many questions, and explore to the best ability, using ancient legends and trying to put together a picture that may fit. Even if conjecture, there is a lot evidence to put towards things by simply asking questions. moon Ufos: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kh4YO_zvl3Y Unlocking The Code: https://unlockingthecode.podbean.com Website: https://www.chantitdownradio.com Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCmTlBzFViiv58N4_K9On0UQ Twitter: https://twitter.com/home Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/chantitdown/ Telegram: https://t.me/chantitdownchat Please help support the show.
