In the most recent installment of the series, Steven Drake and friends head west to Colorado for an over-the-counter rifle elk hunt. Leupold's Scott Rousseau and Jennifer Meeker sit down with Steven Drake and Connor Gabbott post-hunt to chat about the hunting opportunity in Colorado, gear used on the hunt, unit closures, extreme weather, and more.
Connor Gabbott is a professionally trained chef, photographer, videographer and hunter. In this episodes he shares his secrets for preparing and sharing wild game. But we also dig into his evolution as a hunter, his entry into the camera world, and career changes. Connor wrote the introduction and shared some of his favorite wild game recipes in The Wild Kitchen Volume 3 from Wilderness Athlete. I have read and re-read his advice in this cookbook multiple times. It is currently on sale for only $18.71 (May 2021). You can buy it HERE We discuss the importance of a tool called a jicard tenderizer. This is not the exact model that I use but I really like the ability to disassemble this one for easier cleaning.

Wild turkey hunting is the fastest growing form of hunting in the U.S. today. In Oregon, turkey hunting has grown more than ten-fold since a statewide spring season opened in 1987. So in today's hard-hunted turkey woods, you need to know what you're doing. Leupold's Michael Wunnicke sits down with avid turkey hunter and guide Beau Brooks and first-time turkey hunters Amanda Caldwell and Connor Gabbott to talk about their successes and failures in the backwoods of Oregon. Subjects Discussed: Proper calling techniques; set-up tactics; putting birds to bed; logging miles; and more.
Connor Gabbott (@taluscreative) spent the first 20 years of his working life in the kitchen at various restaurants throughout British Columbia. ***WARNING: EXPLICIT LANGUAGE IS USED IN THIS EPISODE*** On location in Dushanbe, the evening before they head home, Adam, Matt Comment and Connor Gabbott share some lessons, laughs, and thoughts on what it was like to chase ibex on the other side of the world. @taluscreative @mattcomment
On this show, Adam is joined by his good friend and colleague, Connor Gabbott. Connor is one of the men behind the curtain at the JOMH and one hell of a talented dude when it comes to running a camera and telling stories through visual mediums. A chef by trade, after 20 years in the restaurant business, he has finally made the leap into the film and photography field full-time. On this episode, Adam and Connor discuss the evolution of a hunter and how the “why” of hunting changes over the course of one’s hunting life, and even, over the course of a season. Through their incredibly different hunting backgrounds, Adam and Connor share how they have arrived at the hunting philosophies that guide their decisions at this point in their lives. @taluscreative
On this show, Adam is joined by Steven Drake to recap his recent trip to the islands of Haida Gwaii to chase Sitka blacktails. This was not your average blacktail hunt! Drake, Connor Gabbott, and one of Connor’s good friends took advantage of the unique hunting opportunities on this remote archipelago, and put together one of the best surf and turf hunting trips we’ve ever seen or heard of. This was a true sea to summit adventure. From alpine bow stalks to bear encounters, and beach deer to crab pots, this trip had it all. Tune in for the full details and trip report! @stevendrakephoto @taluscreative
On this episode, Adam is joined by the full crew of guys that were on the JOMH’s recent late season goat hunt and film expedition. This podcast was recorded part way through the trip and includes an interesting mix of guys that have diverse perspectives on the question of what makes a great hunter? You’ll hear thoughts from Dustin Roe, Nolan Osborne, Dan Watson, Steven Drake, Connor Gabbott and of course Adam. This is an opinionated topic and the group doesn’t shy away from tackling the differences between guided and non-guided hunters, high success ratios versus more selective hunting, killing for meat or age or score and many other factors that play into one’s “success” as a hunter. We hope you enjoy this one as much as we did recording it! Thanks to our guests: @dustinroe @nmo @danwato @stevendrakephoto @taluscreative
***WARNING: STRONG AND EXPLICIT LANGUAGE IS USED ON THIS SHOW*** On this episode, we feature a group discussion with nine guys, all of whom were at WSF’s Sheep Show last week. We recorded this episode in one of our hotel rooms just before attending the Grand Finale Banquet so, the audio quality is not as high as we would normally produce, but given the size of the group and the microphone system required it’s the best we could do. It's not bad, but it's not up to our usual standard. In addition, this podcast contains some strong and explicit language, so if you often listen to podcasts in the vehicle with your kids, this is not one to do so with. We do apologize if anyone takes offense to the language used, but the topics covered are ones we are all, very obviously, passionate about. At least in some circles (like ours), when you get a group of guys together that feel strongly about a given subject, the language is going to get a little colorful at times. That said, the topics covered are very interesting given the very eclectic group of guys huddled around the microphone. The group includes a mix of people from all over Canada and the US, some with lots of hunting experience, others with minimal hunting experience and each with different connections to hunting. We dive into all that and more. What does hunting mean to us on an individual level? How does the act of killing an animal actually feel? How does both the hunting and non-hunting community communicate the reasons we hunt? How do the complexities of conservation fit into the modern media landscape? It's a wide-ranging conversation, but one that is quite interesting given the people involved. On that note specifically, the guys present are: Joshua Skenes, a relatively new hunter and world-renowned chef that owns one of the Top 50 restaurants in the world. Matt Martinez, a long-time hunter and modern renaissance man with experience and success in the business, art and photography world. Mike Pedersen and Kelly Molnar from The Rookie Hunter Podcast. Nolan Osborne, mountain hunting guide, JOMH Assistant Editor and our staff millennial. Peter Gutsche, a BC resident who’s been hunting his entire life that’s deeply passionate about mountain hunting and conservation. Matt Comment, past guest, East Coaster, experienced mountain hunter and passionate conservationist. Connor Gabbott, past guest, chef, photographer and dedicated mountain hunter.
On this episode, Adam is joined by Connor Gabbott, Steven Drake and Shaun Gee to discuss a misrepresented and misunderstood topic, both in the hunting community and mainstream media: bear hunting. This podcast was recorded late at night around a campfire on the banks of the Yellowstone River, the perfect setting for a bro down on a topic that this group of hunters is very passionate about. We cover everyone’s thoughts on bear hunting as an integral role in conservation and overall game management, the state of bear populations in North America, the myths that surround the edibility of bear meat, go-to bear recipes and the excellent—and often overlooked—hunting opportunities that abound in bear country.
In this episode Adam welcomes Connor Gabbott of @cedarandsagebrush back to the show. Connor is a chef by trade but more importantly loves to hunt solo and one hell of a photographer, and film maker. The bulk of Connor’s hunting success has been achieved on solo hunts and on this show Adam and Connor dive into the subject of solo hunting: the pros, cons, and Connor’s lessons and observations from hunting both solo and with other people. They also dig into the deeper side of hunting solo and whether this popular and glamorized concept is a modern phenomenon driven and enabled by technology or simply the next evolution of hunting in the modern age. Connor and Adam bring very different perspectives and experiences to this topic and have a conversation that is sure to get you thinking and maybe even spur you into action! This episode is obviously not coming to you live in the strict sense BUT it was recorded live on location in NZ in two separate locations at different points in the trip. The first part was recorded deep in the Southern Alps a few days into the hunt while we were holed up in a hut waiting out a nasty bit of weather and the second part was recorded at the end of the trip the day we flew out. This episode covers a mix of hunting action, trip details and the Kiwi perspective on conservation and game management, a topic that in NZ has a very different meaning than in North America. Our Kiwi guides, Joseph and Tim take us inside the intricacies of species specific conservation in New Zealand and why it’s such a unique place to hunt with no seasons and no bag limits. A BIG THANK YOU to Joseph Peter owner of HARD YARDS HUNTING NZ for an incredible experience and Connor Gabbott of CEDAR & SAGEBRUSH for the excellent film and photography work on this trip! ***WARNING - THERE IS SOME VERY SPARSE BUT STRONG LANGUAGE IN THIS PODCAST*** On this episode Adam is joined by JOMH subscriber and chef Connor Gabbott, co-founder of Cedar & Sagebrush Productions. Connor came on the show to recount his incredible solo goat bowhunting story and talk about hunting for, as he coined it, the Trophy Experience. Connor’s story is chalk full of lessons, elation and heartbreak…the kind of stuff mountain hunting is all about. Over a few glasses of scotch, Connor and Adam dive into the preparation, commitment and excitement of Connor’s coastal mountain goat hunt in some of the most challenging terrain on the South Coast of BC. As a full-time professional chef, Connor brings an interesting background to the podcast and his thoughts on why he hunts and the “trophies” we all chase in one form another are not to be missed. If you like a good mountain hunting story that will have you smiling, shaking your head and cringing from one moment to the next, sit back and enjoy! Instagram: @cedarandsagebrush
