In this narrated essay, writer Robert Moor journeys to Haida Gwaii, an island chain in British Columbia, for the anniversary of a historic agreement between the Haida Nation and the Canadian government that protects the landscape's last remaining old-growth forests after decades of logging. As he walks through forest stewarded for generations by Haida, Robert begins to see the tangle of Sitka spruces and cedars, mosses and lichens, not as a site of slow decay, but of ongoing growth. How can being in the presence of ancient trees, he asks, help us feel, rather than intellectualize, not only the deep past, but also our responsibility to the future?  Read the essay. Co-hosts Ian Sabroe and Dieter Declercq talk with Dr Arya Thampuran and Prof Sarah de Leeuw about decolonizing our practices. Key themes include: decolonial practice in academic spaces (non-extractive methodologies and representational labour); capitalism and extractive decontextualization; depoliticization of indigenous knowledges and practices; feminist queer-informed anti-colonial methodologies; critical poetics; medical education; and rural, remote, northern, and marginalized geographies. Dr Arya Thampuran is an Assistant Professor at the Institute for Medical Humanities, Durham University and co-lead of the Black Health and the Humanities Network in her day job, and a yoga instructor pre-sunrise/post-sunset. These roles capture her interests in mental health and healing, engaging with communal knowledges and practices around wellbeing. Her work is broadly situated at the intersection of the medical humanities and critical race studies; she is interested in how creative practitioners in contemporary African diasporic contexts express distress and healing, in ways that re-script prevailing psychiatric narratives of illness and wellness. Principally, her work is committed to a decolonial and intersectional approach.   Sarah de Leeuw, a Professor and Canada Research Chair (Humanities and Health Inequities) with the Northern Medical Program (a distributed site of UBC's Faculty of Medicine) is an award-winning researcher, creative writer (poetry and literary non-fiction), and multidisciplinary scholar studying why some people and places have better health than others. Trained as a historical-cultural geographer, de Leeuw's research, activism, and creative practices have for more than 30 years focused on anticolonial, feminist, and queer-informed understandings of overlooked people, communities, and geographies. She grew up in Haida Gwaii and Terrace (Kitsumkalum territory) and now divides her time between Lheidli T'enneh/Dakelh Territory (Prince George) and Syilx Territory (Okanagan Centre).

Heavy rains have dumped more than two years worth of precipitation on Dubai and surrounding nations. It's in an extreme weather event analysts are linking to climate change. More than five inches of rain fell in 24 hours. And a controversial bishop in Australia is the latest victim of a knife attack. It's the second-highest profile knifing in three days. Also, a new landmark agreement between the Haida Nation and the British Columbia government recognizes Haida title over all of Haida Gwaii, an archipelago of more than 150 islands almost 60 miles off of British Columbia's north coast. This agreement was negotiated, not litigated in the courts. Plus, Emerson the seal is back again. Music heard on air: Trippar  The Dadra Cycle Camino De Nacar Bla Planet Mars

Today I delve into some of the questions and meanings we can consider when more desert animals cross our path. I'd forgotten about javelina and coyote as I recorded the previous episode, so decided to add them in here. Javelina showed up for me last week in southern Arizona while I was driving at night: a family of four curiously investigating part of the desert. In a curious twist of fate, the day I recorded the episode, coyotes showed up multiple times both before and after. One place was in the book I finished that morning, about a tree in Haida Gwaii entitled The Golden Spruce by John Vaillant (highly recommend). One telling of that tree can be found here on the Haida Tourism site. Thank you for listening! To mark Truth and Reconciliation Day, hosts Santiago Helou Quintero and Jessa McLean discuss some of the many acts of Indigenous resistance happening across so-called Canada. The Land Alliance to stop mining in the Ring of Fire marched on Queen's Park in Ontario last week. Doug Ford is using typical political maneuvering and false claims of consultation to push another dangerous project through. Five First Nations have banded together to stop it.The Fairy Creek blockade has been the biggest act of civil disobedience in Canada's history. The logging company that won an injunction there is also suing Haida Gwaii for the right to log old growth there, despite the decision of the land stewardship Council. The demands to Search the Landfill and the resistance at Camp Morgan has spread across Manitoba, and gone from coast to coast. It has now become an election issue. With this being just a sampling of the battles going on, both in the court room and on the Land, what does this mean about the state of 'reconciliation' with Indigenous peoples? All of our content is free - made possible by the generous sponsorships of our Patrons. On this episode, I chat with Graham MacLennan. Graham MacLennan is a lawyer based in Vancouver, British Columbia. About 15 years ago, he started volunteering in restaurant kitchens to develop his cooking skills. From 2015 to 2017, Graham stepped completely away from the office world to travel and cook professionally. In Vancouver, he worked with the teams at Burdock & Co. and Harvest Community Foods. He cooked aboard the schooner Passing Cloud in the Great Bear Rainforest and Haida Gwaii with the eco-tourism team at Outer Shores Expeditions. As well, Graham considers himself very lucky to have cooked with some amazing chefs in his favourite city to visit, Las Vegas. Graham returned to legal practice in 2017 and started his podcast Cheftimony to stay connected to the culinary world. Since he's worked with many chefs and many lawyers over the years, those are the people Graham talks to most often on his show. While the chefs know the food best, the lawyers have lots to say on the topic! In the episode, we discuss Graham's journey into learning how to cook in a professional kitchen. We discuss the similarities and differences of law and food. Graham shares advice on those questioning their own career journey and we chat about what the food world could learn from a more structured career path in law.
