Three narrators portray the viewpoints of uncommon women leading full, magical lives in Elizabeth Acevedo's first novel for adults. Host Jo Reed and AudioFile's Kendra Winchester discuss this story of Flor, an older Dominican American woman who decides to throw herself a living wake. One of four sisters, Flor dreams about when people are going to die. Author Acevedo narrates the majority of the novel; her poignant turns of phrase and delivery in English and Spanish provide a musical listening experience. Sixta Morel portrays the four sisters' passions and gifts, while Danyeli Rodriguez del Orbe portrays the youthful Yadi. Read the full review of the audiobook on AudioFile's website. This week Travis and Stephanie are joined by Danyeli & Nick. Danyeli is a writer, spoken word poet, and community organizer that Stephanie has admired for several years. Her and Nick met at John Jay college where “everyone leaves there an activist or a cop”. They all chat about when Dominican women fall for Jamaican men and all the stigmas that follow. Colorism, misogyny, boundaries, and protecting one another at all cost. They dive into different ways codependency manifests itself in a relationship. How not all relationship advice is good advice. How many people have told you “never go to bed mad”? This conversation felt like free group couples therapy. It is always great when you get to share intimate details about your relationship and realize you're not alone.
