Lasting change begins when you decide that your well-being matters enough to prioritize. Kiona Sinks returns to share how the Shift Experience didn't just influence her habits—it completely reframed her relationship with herself. From vitamin routines to food choices, energy levels to emotional presence, she's living proof that when you start showing up with intention, everything changes. Her journey reminds us that healing isn't just physical—it's mental, spiritual, and emotional—and when those parts align, you unlock a version of yourself that's not only healthier, but more powerful than you imagined. Key Takeaways: Intentional living creates a ripple effect—when you prioritize small daily choices, everything from energy to clarity improves. Healing is holistic; physical health, mental focus, emotional regulation, and spiritual peace all work together. Knowing yourself is key to showing up fully in your relationships, work, and purpose-driven life. Investing in your health now prevents burnout later and opens the door to greater impact and alignment. In this episode, you will hear: My book Fertile Imagination turns ONE on Halloween, and I'm celebrating by sharing all the juicy details from my podcast tour!
Hey, it's an off week for the podcast, but here I am anyway. This is Scott Johnson, and you're listening to What Was That Like. Usually I have a guest on to talk about something really unusual that they experienced – like having their arm torn off, or being buried in an avalanche, or witnessing a murder. The guest comes on and tells the details of what happened. And there are more than 190 episode to binge with those amazing stories. But today is a different kind of amazing story! Today's a bonus episode. As you might know, the last three Fridays have been personal stories of people who survived the terrorist attacks on 9/11. Those are really important stories to share, to make sure we never forget what happened on that day. But after three weeks of tragedy and trauma, I thought it would be nice to have a FUN episode. And this one fits that bill perfectly. Today you're going to hear from a mother, Kiona, and her oldest daughter, Kavina. Kiona is a birth worker, and she's been involved with or witnessed more than 140 births. She has a podcast called Birth As We Know It, where guests come on and tell their stories about birth. Well – in one of her episodes, Kiona interviewed her daughter Kavina, who was just 9 years old at the time of their conversation. When she was 4, Kavina was present for the birth of her younger brother, Kairo. And when she was 8, Kavina actually caught her little sister, Katana, as she was born. So today, you'll hear Kiona's podcast episode where she talked with little Kavina about what it was like for each of those experiences. I can tell you up front, this conversation will make you smile. In the show notes I'll have pictures of Kiona with her husband Kumar and all their children (yes, everyone in their family has a name that starts with K – including their dogs Kobe and Koko). So I hope you enjoy this adorable mother-daughter conversation. And afterward, I spoke with each of them briefly because you know I always have some questions. They might be used to pull an all-nighter (for studying, gaming, or long-haul truck driving) but energy drinks actually have a fascinating history behind them! For the last regular episode of the season, Kiona and Luis decided to explore the origins of two famous caffeinated beverages. Our journey first takes us to Austria by way of Thailand as we learn about the social situations and cultural traditions that inspired the invention of Red Bull. Then we head south to Brazil to discover the many benefits of guaraná and how one beer company ended up producing the country's most beloved soft drink. This is our last regular episode of the season, and we've had a blast! What do banchan, baby-back ribs, and taquitos de cabeza all have in common? Well, they all involve the world's oldest cooking method! In this episode, Kiona and Luis explore the history and different forms of open-flame and pit barbecue, from the Caribbean origins of the word, passing through the way it relates to Mexican barbacoa, and finally landing in Korea to wonder if bulgogi goes well with tortillas.Follow us on Instagram @hownottotravelpod and @ochentapodcasts. How is it that vanilla is such an expensive spice, yet so many vanilla-flavored products are very cheap? How is vanilla produced and harvested in so many different countries despite the fact that the only insect that pollinates it can only be found in Mexico? And what does the word “vanilla” even mean? For this episode, Kiona and Luis take a pint of vanilla ice cream out of the freezer to discuss a dessert that we often unfairly consider dull, but in fact has an incredibly rich history.Follow us on Instagram @hownottotravelpod and @ochentapodcasts. This episode, Kiona and Luis pull up a world map to trace the unique routes of the world's favorite starchy fruit, from Polynesia to Portugal, then throughout Africa and the Americas. For this episode, prepare to get peppered with facts about what is arguably the world's most charismatic sauce: Tabasco! Kiona and Luis talk about the condiment's 150-year history, its many ventures into everywhere from archaeological expeditions to the International Space Station, and about how, despite sharing its name with a state in Mexico, it's not, in fact, Mexican.
