Her articles on Haitian history and culture have appeared in over a dozen magazines, newspapers, and journals including, The New Yorker (“What's the Path Forward for Haiti?”), The New York Times (“Napoleon Isn't a Hero to Celebrate”), Harper's Bazaar (“Resurecting a Lost Palace of Haiti”), Essence (“Haiti isn't Cursed. It is Exploited”), The Nation (“What the French Really Owe Haiti”), and the LA Review of Books (“Why did Bridgerton Erase Haiti?”). She has won several awards, grants, and fellowships for her contributions to historical and cultural understandings of the Caribbean, notably from the Ford Foundation, the American Council of Learned Societies, the Haitian Studies Association, and the National Endowment for the Humanities. Most recently, she won a grant from the Robert Silvers Foundation for The First and Last King of Haiti. She graduated from Loyola Marymount University with a B.A. in English and French in 2002 and went on to teach in Rouen, France as an Assistante d'Anglais before enrolling at the University of Notre Dame, where she earned a Ph.D. in English in 2009. Since graduating, she has taught Haitian and French colonial history and culture at the University of Miami, the Claremont Graduate University, and the University of Virginia, where she also became series editor of New World Studies at UVA Press. In July 2022, she was appointed as Professor of French and African American Studies at Yale University. Drugs are big business.  The most recent UN estimates place total retail sales of illegal drugs around $320 billion or roughly 1% of the entire world's GDP. That means there is a lot at stake when drug cartels set up shop.  They run themselves like corporations, with hierarchies, distribution models, business strategies, and public relations campaigns. A Mexican drug cartel employed the PR tactic after the Scorpions, a division of the Gulf Cartel, had a shootout in the town of Matamoros, Mexico. An innocent local woman was killed. Four people were kidnapped in what later turned out to be a case of mistaken identity. The Scorpions mistook four Americans for members of a Hatian drug cartel - so they did what any cartel will do when an enemy is walking through your territory - they kidnapped the four Americans and killed two.  Later they discovered the mistake and issued a written apology to all the residents of Matamoros and the families of the kidnapping victims.  To make amends, the cartel turned over the members who were responsible.  Problem solved.

The Association of Minnesota Counties (AMC) has an updated legislative agenda, looking to states and the Federal Government for funding and support. Now we all know that money comes in a one-time payment, and because the county scrambles for the free money, they are left having to pay for these things forever after. We see county government taking on Health and Human Services, roads, transportation, housing, law enforcement, and more. It's a huge burden, but some of it is brought on by bigger government and these unfunded programs. AMC is proposing to lower property taxes by getting more money from the state. Wait, what? That's our money too. They want the state to spend more on equitable housing, regardless of what the market calls for. They also call for a state-wide, multi-modal transportation system. Where is it dense enough to support this? It's one desired hand out after another. There is a whole bunch of lobbying going onto get their hands on your money, and as long as these humongous omnibus bills there's a good chance it'll get funded.
