Dean Clifford has defied the odds and overcome numerous challenges to become one of the world's best weightlifters. Dean was born with epidermolysis bullosa, a rare genetic condition that causes his skin to blister and tear at the slightest touch. Despite this, Dean has managed to double his life expectancy and has become an inspiration to many and a wonder to the medical community. He talks about the challenges he has faced growing up with skin difference, including being unable to play many sports due to the fragility of his skin. Dean Clifford cannot run yet alone walk without ripping skin off his body. He suffers from Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB) Individuals with EB are born without one of the genes that glue your skin together. This affects their skin and for some, the mucous membranes inside their body. Any friction or rubbing of the skin can lead to large blisters and loss of skin. Tune in to hear more about his story.

Here’s another great opportunity for occupational therapy discussion. Dean Clifford, a 38-year-old man from Queensland, suffers from a severe skin condition known Epidermolysis bullosa, causing him to have the most fragile skin, which blisters frequently and takes much longer to heal than usual.

Dean is also the only official Ambassador of the Brisbane Broncos Rugby League Football Club. Dean is an advocate for DEBRA as mentioned in the opening. This is a voluntary organization to raise awareness for those and their families afflicted with Epidermolysis Bullosa (Cotton Wool Kids). This is a tragic and debilitation disease with no cure, usually containing an early death sentence. Dean has baffled medical science with his sheer will and determination to survive and fight for life. It has been said that few would be able to deal with the intense level of pain that those with Epidermolysis Bullosa have to deal with every single day of their life.
