This is not a show about teaching eye contact. We'll get to that in a bit. First though, I should note that the 22nd installment of the Inside JABA Series is coming out comically late. I apologize for getting us off schedule. The good news is that we already have a great paper to discuss for the 23rd Inside JABA episode that I think you're going to love, so I hope to have that one out later on in the spring. Back to this episode. Drs. Danny Conine and Jenn Fritz join me to discuss a paper Danny wrote with his colleagues called, "Evaluating a screening-to-intervention model with caregiver training for response to name among children with autism." There are so many great things about this paper, and listeners will be able to tell this from my enthusiasm in discussing it with Danny and Jenn. As I noted above, this is not about teaching eye contact, but rather, a more generalized repertoire of responding to one's name (RTN). We get into why these two things are different, and, as Danny tells it, RTN repertoires have many benefits that directly impact learning and safety. In this paper, he describes an elegant assessment and intervention that his research team implemented to develop RTN in the study's participants. In carrying out this study, they also employed a simple and effective assent withdrawal component, which we get into. Then, they took what the skills they developed in a clinic setting, and taught the participant's caregivers to implement RTN procedures at home. As such, this paper provides a great example of how to generalize skills across settings. Very cool! Along the way, Danny provides practical tips clinicians can consider for their own practice. All of this to say, I'm hoping you'll agree that the wait for this episode will be worth it! Resources discussed in this podcast: Conine, et al. (2025).
Despite being a cornerstone of the science of behavior, we've gone nearly 300 episodes without ever really delving into the details of the matching law. Maybe it's because it involves too many equations. Maybe it's because a lot of the research seems to focus exclusively on choice in basketball shots. In any case we're getting every up to speed on the basics of the matching law and its importance in studying choice. Plus, Rob has spicy hot takes. Sweet sassy mo-lassy! We're continuing our powerful journey of self-awareness and intentional living, as Ella and Becky Vollmer discuss the importance of pausing to assess our lives and make conscious choices. Many of us operate on autopilot, often neglecting our own needs and desires while prioritizing others. Becky shares her personal transformation, and practical strategies for identifying values and priorities, encouraging us to ask ourselves critical questions about what is truly working in our lives.
As our resolution for the new year, we decided to record 300 podcast episodes. And wouldn't you know it: We're almost there! Kick off 2025 by learning about the, surprisingly, never-before discussed on the show matching law! Then we blast off into a more recent development by reviewing research on Collaborative Problem Solving before settling down for a wintry Grab Bag jamboree. And speaking of jamborees, we release our 300th episode on the always relevant topic, vaccines not causing autism. Want to see ABA Inside Track celebrate the 300th episode milestone in person? www.iotusecase.com#DEVICEMANAGEMENT #SECURITY #SERVICESIn der 149.
Sure, everyone's talking about Journey Management, but few are actually doing it well... It's one thing to map out customer journeys, but quite another to truly manage them. The frameworks and models look great on paper, but reality is often far messier. Most organizations struggle to get a handle on even one journey, let alone a dozen! So I'm excited that Florian Vollmer, a true pioneer in this field, returns to the Service Design Show to share his hard-won wisdom. You might remember him from his previous appearance on the Show where he talked about managing 100+ journeys at NCR. What's fascinating is that Florian got a rare opportunity when starting his new role at Autodesk – a chance to rebuild a Journey Management practice from the ground up, applying all the lessons from his previous experience. This is your classic "I wish I knew everything I know now at the start of this project. It would have been completed twice as fast and at half the cost."This time, we dive deep into the nitty-gritty of Journey Management, tackling tough questions like: Who really owns the journey? Are dedicated tools essential or just a distraction? Why getting granular at the touchpoint level is essential? What are the biggest challenges to launching Journey Management inside an organization? And the million-dollar question: how do you get buy-in and funding when you're just starting out? So if you're already knee-deep in Journey Management or just starting to explore it, I'm sure you'll appreciate Florian's honest perspective from the trenches. One of my biggest takeaways from this conversation was that, as Florian explains in detail, this is really hard work. So you have to have patience and be kind to yourself. Amen to that! Enjoy the conversation and keep making a positive impact. Take care, ~ Marc --- [ 1. The water crisis is one of the most pressing issues facing our planet, with climate change, population growth, and pollution threatening the availability of clean water worldwide. One company working to tackle this problem head-on is Spout Water. This California-based startup has developed an innovative solution, the Spout Monolith, a sleek kitchen device that produces pure drinking water from the moisture in the air. Spout founder and CEO Reuben Vollmer joins the conversation to explain how a personal challenge began his mission to solve water scarcity and quality issues. Reuben recently contributed an article to Earth911, mapping his journey into the world of water. It started with an unexpected letter his family received during a drought in 2010, warning that their olive farm's well could be restricted. Water production and distribution needs a good swift kick in the form of a surprising alternative to how we've done it during the Industrial Era. The Spout Monolith may be one kick in our complaisance. We are surrounded by water in the atmosphere. A June 2022 study by the University of Reading in the United Kingdom found that total atmospheric water vapor is increasing by about 1% a decade due to warming climates. One percent may not sound like much, but the United States Geological Survey reports that the planet's atmosphere contains 12 trillion gallons of water, so one percent more water vapor represents 120 billion gallons. That one-percent increase in atmospheric water vapor per decade means that between 2010 and 2050, as much as 480 billion gallons of additional water vapor will migrate into the air, around half of today's annual human consumption of freshwater. As a yoga teacher, Becky experienced firsthand the transformative power of this ancient practice. Yoga was her sanctuary during a tumultuous time, offering not just physical and mental benefits but also a spiritual awakening. It taught her to control her body, breath, and mind, leading to a deeper self-understanding and a realization of her potential. "There was something about [yoga] that I couldn't quite name, but it was quiet, and I liked that enough that I was willing to sit through the discomfort of not knowing what the hell I was doing to try to do that again." – Becky, (14:46) Tune in and discover why Becky's personal and professional experiences are a beacon of hope for many. Her insights on making guided choices from the soul rather than the ego, and the role of yoga and self-reflection in her transformation, are invaluable lessons for us all. Have you ever felt 'stuck'? Chances are, the answer is yes. We can feel stuck in circumstances, situations that feel beyond our control. We can feel stuck when we are trying to manage other peoples feelings or reactions. Let's face it, feeling stuck can suck! If you have ever asked yourself these questions, you are not alone. Becky Vollmer is the author of "You Are Not Stuck" and she shares on the podcast exactly how we move from feeling stuck to feeling empowered by choice. Becky is more than an author; she is a yoga teacher, a retreat leader and a spiritual guide who coaches women to take back their power. Becky's mission is "... to empower people to pursue the lives they dream of instead of settling for the ones they feel stuck in..." Our podcast conversation moves from the success of her book to her 'prescription' for moving from fear to freedom to her take on 'Thelma and Louise'ing it'! Kath and Jan are joined by the delightful writer and teacher Emily Vollmer, but not before Jan tells a long contentious story about a tomato at a chic restaurant in Santa Monica. Kath initially sides with the restaurant (and the tomato) but suddenly changes her tune when sweet Emily pipes up and supports Jan. Typical Kath behavior. Meanwhile, Emily regales everyone with stories from the front lines of teaching 10th and 11th graders in the Los Angeles public school system, and how the kids are learning about food and nutrition and also how it relates to sports and the Magic Bullet. She talks about cooking for just herself (we're slightly jealous) and what she expects when she dines at a restaurant. A very fun conversation with a lovely soul - listen in!

I'm thrilled to be joined by none other than Dr. Tim Vollmer. In this podcast, we talk about a wide variety of research and practice topics, as well as some funny stories from his long and prolific career. Specifically, talk about how his dog ate his copy of Strategies and Tactics, how he and his colleagues analyzed 2 and 3-point shot patterns in basketball games, his line of research that examined The Good Behavior Game, Behavior Analysis and the game of Poker, and his take on why he and his students have such an affinity for one another. That's not all. We probably spent the most amount of time discussing the topic of ignoring in the context of Behavioral Intervention Plans, and its potential problems. I really hope you stick around until the end of the podcast, because we close the show in a slightly different format. Instead of asking Tim my normal closing question (advice for the newly minted), I ask him to share his thoughts on the future direction of Behavior Analysis, including both risks and opportunities. The journey from early sobriety to long-term recovery. Becky's first 18 months of sobriety were all white knuckled and left her with a huge amount of rage. She was dry but not sober. Then she found her way into a 12-step program. She described her childhood exposure to alcohol like the movie Everything, Everywhere, All At Once. Becky talks about the difference between women in early sobriety and those in long-term recovery. We now have our full selves to deal with. And the goal becomes emotional sobriety. We dive into some of the principles that guide us in this phase of long-term recovery and her perspective on them. Becky Vollmer is an author, longtime yoga teacher, and creator of You Are Not Stuck, a movement that empowers people to pursue the lives they most deeply desire. On February 1st, 1993, a minister was summoned to a house off Dimboola Road in the outback town of Antwerp, Australia. When he arrived, he was greeted by a man named David Klingner, who said, “It's a long story,” as he led the pastor into the house. Inside, the minister was overcome by a foul stench. Blowflies were buzzing around the house, attracted to the putrid smell of decay. The minister was pretty confident that whoever they had called him for was beyond saving. He made his way past a group of people who were calmly eating their lunch at the kitchen table into a bedroom where the swollen remains of 49-year-old Joan Vollmer lay fully dressed on a mattress. The minister immediately phoned the police, and a constable was sent to the house. When Constable Michael Arnott arrived, he spoke to the dead woman's husband, 54-year-old pig farmer Ralph Vollmer. After just a few moments, the constable understood the situation as thus: Ralph's wife had been possessed by ten different demons, and she had died as a result of her “deliverance,” otherwise known as an exorcism.Join Jen and Cam as they discuss “The Fatal Exorcism of Joan Vollmer.”Promo by our friend Edward October from Octoberpod AM.Be sure to catch his newest spooky tale, “The Spirit Doll: A Halloween Fantasia,” on October 24!Written and researched by Lauretta AllenListener Discretion by Edward October from OctoberpodVHSExecutive Producer Nico Vitesse of The Inky Paw PrintSources:https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/211590852/joan-vollmerhttps://www.nzherald.co.nz/world/the-creepy-australian-country-house-abandoned-after-joan-vollmers-terrifying-death-when-an-exorcist-tried-to-rid-her-of-demons/QSK4KYGCVHVSUMXGBUDKS7C4VA/https://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/national/the-victorian-woman-who-died-after-a-fourday-exorcism/news-story/884b0b37067ce3bfad090c45c29283cchttps://casefilepodcast.com/case-128-joan-vollmer/https://forgottenillawarra.wordpress.com/2014/08/21/a-terrible-exorcism/https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/127247897https://www.newspapers.com/image/120622909/?terms=Joan%20Vollmer%20exorcism&match=1https://www.newspapers.com/image/120621692/?terms=Joan%20Vollmer%20exorcism&match=1https://www.newspapers.com/image/120464050/?terms=Joan%20Vollmer%20exorcism&match=1https://www.newspapers.com/image/120627676/?terms=Joan%20Vollmer%20exorcism&match=1https://www.newspapers.com/image/120758486/?terms=Joan%20Vollmer%20exorcism&match=1https://www.newspapers.com/image/829130835/?terms=Joan%20Vollmer%20exorcism&match=1https://www.newspapers.com/image/123064357/?terms=Joan%20Vollmer%20exorcism&match=1https://www.9news.com.au/national/wife-s-exorcism-death-blamed-on-hospital/b4dc635e-5c6e-4feb-9203-f7f60d868637https://www.newspapers.com/image/120627676/?terms=Antwerp%20exorcism&match=1https://www.newspapers.com/image/120638985/?terms=Antwerp%20exorcism&match=1https://www.newspapers.com/image/120622909/?terms=Antwerp%20exorcism&match=1https://www.newspapers.com/image/120620440/?terms=Antwerp%20exorcism&match=1https://www.newspapers.com/image/120091899/?terms=Antwerp%20exorcism&match=1https://www.newspapers.com/image/123004623/?terms=Antwerp%20exorcism&match=1https://www.newspapers.com/image/123005085/?terms=Antwerp%20exorcism&match=1https://www.newspapers.com/image/122999279/?terms=Antwerp%20exorcism&match=1https://www.newspapers.com/image/123064472/?terms=Antwerp%20exorcism&match=1https://www.newspapers.com/image/123065632/?terms=Antwerp%20exorcism&match=1https://psychcentral.com/disorders/hypomanic-episode-symptoms#what-is-it https://www.newspapers.com/image/829130835/?terms=Joan%20Vollmer%20funeral&match=1https://www.newspapers.com/image/829461106/?terms=Joan%20Vollmer%20funeral&match=1https://www.newspapers.com/image/120475607/?terms=Joan%20Vollmer%20funeral&match=1 --Interesting opinion piece on the matterhttps://www.newspapers.com/image/123499421/?terms=joan%20vollmer&match=1https://www.newspapers.com/image/122996803/?terms=joan%20vollmer&match=1https://www.newspapers.com/image/122998443/terms=joan%20vollmer%20guilty&match=1 This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/3647242/advertisement
DRA treatments are probably one of our all-time favorites when it comes to supporting clients with challenging behavior. If it weren't for that darn extinction piece, it'd probably be an all-time favorite for everyone. So, what if we kept the DRA and ditched the extinction component? This week we find out. Summer just keeps heating up and we've got plenty of fireworks bursting out of your ol' podcatcher. We're celebrating a month full of Wednesdays with a month full of episodes featuring special guests like Dr. Holly Gover and Dr. Amy Odum to dig deep into the world of feeding selectivity treatment and delay discounting. Then we gather round the microphones to look at whether DRA without extinction is a pipe dream or a beautiful, non-coercive reality before heading into the wayback machine with our Fall 2022 talk from the Thompson Center for Autism Conference about quality of life. Then, for you patrons out there, we'll be hitting the books (club) to discuss B.F. Skinner's only novel, "Walden Two" which, we swear, is actually a ton of fun to read...if you're the kind of person who willingly does a podcast about behavior analysis at least. And, also only for patrons, vote on next month's live episode topic with another loser bracket of some of our (but not your!) favorite new topics. This is a conversation I've really been looking forward to sharing with you. Jose Rios is a legend in our field, particularly if you're a behavior analyst in California, where he's based out of. In this conversation, Jose recounts his more than 50 year career in providing ABA services to individuals with developmental disabilities. We cover the following: How he got started in the field at the tender age of 17. What the field of ABA was like in the early 70s. What it takes to provide amazing experiences for group home residents and staff. The founding of the Latino Association for Behavior Analysis. The evolution of behavior support plans over the years. Jose's intense mentoring program. What makes for good presentations. Jose is an avid reader, and we spent almost a half hour talking about our favorite fiction authors before hitting the record button. In the interview itself however, we do mention a few books and other resources that are more pertinent to the topic of Behavior Analysis, including: The various works of Dr. Gary LaVigna. The various works of Dr. John Lutzker. Teaching dating skills to individuals with disabilities (Cuvo et al., 1985). Vollmer et al. (1992). A content analysis of written behavior management programs. Resonate, by Nancy Duarte. Presentation Zen: Simple Ideas on Presentation Design and Delivery (Voices That Matter) 3rd Edition, by Garr Reynolds. The Last Lecture, by Randy Pausch. The Supervisor's Guidebook: Evidence-Based Strategies for Promoting Work Quality and Enjoyment Among Human Service Staff, Reid & Parsons. We're coming around the bend and heading into summer, but, before that, we've got too many episodes to count without using all of your fingers. Special guests Dr. Claudia Dozier and Dr. Sarah Lechago will be joining us to talk about applications of synchronous reinforcement and research on diversity, equity, and inclusion coming out of the BADIE Lab. In between those discussions we look at a variety of angles on mand training and explore some behavior assessments we didn't know existed. Finally, we get very skeptical about the world in our latest book club reviewing Calling Bullshit. All this and a puppy joins the show for better ratings. Mind Love • Modern Mindfulness to Think, Feel, and Live Well
We will learn: Why being stuck is such a misunderstood phenomenon Why we fail to recognize that we are actually stuck How to align our lives and make choices that internalize our new ways of being What would it feel like if you just knew the right thing to do? If you could tap into your inner wisdom and feel guided by your own soul? Sometimes what we think is inner guidance is actually social pressure, family expectations, or perceived obligations. So how do you know the difference? It's a constant journey of self-discovery and self-improvement, and it starts with a shift in perspective and a willingness to listen to your own inner guidance. It's learning to be the observer of your own thoughts without attaching to them. Learning to differentiate between your soul speaking to you, versus your ego. So that's what we're learning about today. Our guest is Becky Vollmer. She is a speaker, yoga teacher, and creator of “You Are Not Stuck,” a movement that empowers people to pursue the lives they most deeply desire. She guides a global community on social media that is several hundred thousand strong, teaches online courses about empowerment and choice, and leads sold-out programs that combine movement, breathwork, self-exploration, and action planning at yoga and wellness centers across the country.
