Broadcast from KSQD, Santa Cruz on 1-08-2026: Dr. Dawn concludes her 2025 medical advances recap, noting that while GLP-1 weight loss drugs showed unexpected benefits for addiction, schizophrenia, and dementia risk, Novo Nordisk recently reported semaglutide had no effect on cognition in people with existing dementia or mild cognitive impairment. She describes the first successful human bladder transplant performed on May 4th. The 41-year-old recipient received both kidney and bladder due to the bladder's complex blood vessel network. Surgeons practiced on cadavers with active circulation before achieving success, opening pathways for future bladder-only transplants for the 84,000 Americans diagnosed with bladder cancer annually. An emailer follows up about purslane for cognitive health. Dr. Dawn reviewed the referenced studies and found neither actually supported claims about purslane and cognition—one discussed the Lyon Heart Study's Mediterranean diet, the other described antioxidant properties. She cautions listeners that websites citing "scientifically proven" claims often reference articles that don't support their assertions. An emailer asks about statin alternatives after developing severe muscle pain on both atorvastatin and rosuvastatin. Dr. Dawn suggests he shouldn't be on statins given his classic adverse reaction. She recommends ezetimibe plus oat bran for cholesterol, metformin for his elevated triglycerides indicating insulin resistance, and checking LDL particle size and inflammation markers. She emphasizes that cholesterol is a risk factor, not a disease, and treating 50 low-risk people for 10 years prevents only one heart attack. A caller discusses plaque formation theory, comparing it to calluses. Dr. Dawn explains Linus Pauling's similar hypothesis that plaque forms at vessel bifurcations to protect against turbulent blood flow damage. She warns against driving total cholesterol below 130, as it disrupts steroid hormone production. The caller shares his mother's near-fatal rhabdomyolysis from statins—muscle breakdown releasing myoglobin that clogs kidneys—and criticizes data transfer failures between hospital systems. An emailer reports four UTIs in two months at age 79. Dr. Dawn questions whether all were true infections, since vaginal contamination causes false positives on dipstick tests. For confirmed UTIs, she recommends D-mannose and cranberry to prevent bacterial adhesion, post-void residual ultrasound to check for incomplete emptying, lactobacillus probiotics, and vaginal DHEA (Intrarosa) to restore mucosal thickness and disease resistance. Dr. Dawn describes Stanford's Phase III trial for dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa, where defective collagen-7 causes skin layers to separate at the slightest touch. Researchers take patient skin biopsies, use retroviruses to insert corrected genes, grow credit-card-sized skin grafts over 25 days, then suture them onto wounds. At 48 weeks, 65% of treated wounds fully healed versus 7% of controls. She reports a Stanford study showing premature babies who heard recordings of their mothers reading for 2 hours 40 minutes daily developed more mature white matter in language pathways. The left arcuate fasciculus showed greater development than controls, demonstrating how early auditory stimulation shapes brain circuitry even in NICU settings. Dr. Dawn concludes with tattoo safety concerns. Modern vivid inks contain compounds developed for car paint and printer toner, including azo dyes that break down into carcinogenic aromatic amines—especially during laser removal. Pigment particles migrate to lymph nodes and persist in macrophages, causing prolonged inflammation. She advises those with tattoos to avoid laser removal, wear sunscreen, practice lymphatic hygiene, and reconsider extensive new tattoos.

In this Bible study, we look at Leviticus chapter 13 and the process that the priest would go through to diagnose defiling skin diseases (or “Leprosy” as labeled in some Bible translations). We look at Leprosy (known today as Hansen's disease) and walk through each of the “defiling skin diseases” outlined in the chapter. We also talk about why a person with Leprosy had to call out “unclean-unclean” as they walked down the street.Outline:01:45 - CLEAN / UNCLEAN - do not confuse “unclean” with being judged by God, or with being “unloved” by the community. To be unclean meant you were not cleared to approach the Lord in the Tabernacle. You were not cleared for entry, AND if you were labeled “unclean” and you had contact with anyone who Was clean, they are now unclean as well and have to go through the cleansing rites to become clean (cleared to approach the Lord).04:41 -“Leprosy” or “Defiling Skin Diseases?” Why do the translations differ in what word they use for chapters 13 and 14? The Hebrew word for defiling skin disease, traditionally translated as 'leprosy,' was used for various diseases affecting the skin.05:55 - define the Word “Leprosy” Hebrew: TṢāraʿaṯh “tsaw-rah'-ath” צָרַעַתLeprosy is a real thing. It existed in Jesus' day (as it does today). Today it is known as Hansen's disease because the word “Leprosy” has such a negative connotation to it.New International Bible Dictionary p.273World Health Organization Article on Leprosy: https://www.who.int/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/leprosy14:25 - Leviticus 13.1-8 (Reading and discussion of)18:12 - Leviticus 13.9-17 (Reading and discussion of)21:12 - Leviticus 13.18-23 - Boils (Reading and discussion of). 22:11 - See also: Exodus 9.8-12 and Job 2.7-8. Dr. Sandy Skotnicki is a leading expert and one of a handful of dermatologists in Canada with a subspecialty in allergic contact dermatitis and patch testing. We discuss allergens vs irritants, natural vs synthetic, the rise of sensitive skin issues, ingredient transparency, and the regulatory challenges within the beauty industry, particularly concerning fragrance and highlighting the need for better consumer education and safer product formulations. You'll walk away with valuable knowledge and practical skin hygiene tips for both yourself and your children. This is a must listen if you are experiencing skin issues or want to avoid them in the future! Follow Sandy on Instagram @drsandyskotnicki and check out her bestselling book "Beyond Soap." (Amazon affiliate link). Takeaways Avoiding toxins and allergenic ingredients in everyday products is important for overall health and well-being. There is a difference between irritants and allergens, and understanding this distinction can help in identifying and avoiding potential skin reactions. Fragrances, both natural and synthetic, can be a common cause of allergic contact dermatitis. Finding skincare products that work for sensitive skin can be challenging, and it often requires trial and error. The beauty industry needs more research, regulation, and education to ensure the safety and efficacy of products. Simplify your skincare routine and eliminate potential irritants to identify triggers for skin reactions. Reintroduce products one at a time to pinpoint the cause of skin problems. Skincare for young children should involve minimal washing and exposure to some dirt. Excessive cleanliness can disrupt the immune system and the skin's natural balance. Fragrance and essential oils are common culprits for skin reactions and should be approached with caution. Regulations in the skincare industry need to prioritize transparency and provide options for fragrance-free products. Could the secrets to perpetual youthfulness lie within our very genes? Dr. Gail Humble, a visionary in the realm of non-surgical aesthetic medicine, joins us to reveal her pioneering work on the Klotho gene and its impact on aging. With her extensive background in genetics, Dr. Humble argues that the way we age can be radically changed. Her conviction is clear: our outward appearance should be a reflection of our inner vitality. During our enthralling discussion, Dr. Humble offers a glimpse into her innovative products, ones that I've personally experienced, that harness the power of genetics to help preserve that inner spark. This episode also delves deep into the transformative power of a novel skincare technology. A protein cloak paired with liposome delivery works to fend off oxidative stress and enhance cellular longevity. Dr. Humble helps us understand how this technology not only protects skin from the sun's harmful rays but also fosters gene expression to fortify telomeres. The results speak for themselves, with noticeable improvements in skin texture, elasticity, and pigmentation becoming apparent in just a matter of weeks. We discuss the ease of integrating this technology into daily life and the striking before-and-after photos that stand as testament to this revolutionary approach.Join us for this fascinating episode where Dr. Humble sheds light on the intersection of wellness, technology, and the artful management of aging.About our Guest: Dr. Humble brings a commitment to perform the art and science of aesthetic medicine to its highest degree concentrating exclusively on non surgical procedures to enhance, mold, shape, and improve the face and body. Welcome home. Welcome back to the podcast! Today, we're talking about Midnight Manor, a late entry suggestion for Pocket this Halloween that ended up probably saving our schedule. Midnight Manor is a short horror-themed platformer from a solo developer that encourages players to play the game multiple times in different ways to see all the narrative possibilities it has to offer. Mechanically speaking, the game is simple, revolving around carrying items necessary for progression from place to place and navigating the titular manor. This simple gameplay lends itself, in a way, to the multiple ending-based design of the game, encouraging you to make small optimizations to make each successive run a bit faster, but admittedly does very little to make the game more engaging to go through each time. With no enemies, and therefore no fail state, to speak of, what is left to really engage with lies in its atmosphere, music, art and narrative content. All of these things are subjective, but given the short time investment to actually complete the game, and even seeing all the endings isn't going to add all that much to your total playtime, it is likely worth the low barrier to entry to playing. We're going to be talking about how character design can raise questions and eyebrows and our thoughts on the intentionality of it, what vibes the presentational aspects of the game put off, and we theorize on what this game may be a sequel to. Thank you for joining us again this week! Midnight Manor was a strangely nostalgic experience that harked back to indie games during our more experimental years when we were just trying anything we could find. That said, it's a mixed bag, though still more polished and with more thought than you might expect from a project that was this tiny. Did Midnight Manor send you back to a simpler time? Did it get you to play through it more than once? Let us know in the comments, or over in the Discord, where the suggestion for this game came from. As I said at the beginning, our time was rather tight this month, and our last Halloween game is going to bleed over into November a little bit, but we're always happy to try weird things for October and this certainly qualifies. Next time, we're going to be talking about Anodyne for a bit more of an adventure-y feel for November, so be sure to check back with us then!
Welcome back to the podcast! In today's summer fasting special episode, we look back to a conversation Chantel had with Rob Stuart! In his twenties, he experienced a tumultuous phase in his life, hitting rock bottom due to his reckless lifestyle. Engaging in excessive partying and neglecting self-care, he paid little attention to his well-being. Consequently, his health deteriorated rapidly, leading to kidney surgery from the strain of taking too many supplements as a weight lifter. Various health issues plagued him, including a torn rotator cuff in his shoulder, digestive problems, and persistent battles with dermatitis, eczema, and IBS. The constant pain and suffering prompted him to seek help, turning to conventional medicine by visiting his local doctor, who prescribed drugs and surgery. However, this approach did not yield positive results; instead, his condition worsened significantly. Following shoulder surgery, he found himself immobile for around six months, and the combination of prescription drugs, inactivity, and poor eating habits exacerbated his already frail health. His body became highly acidic and unable to heal, leaving him in a state of despair. In a desperate search for relief, he stumbled upon an online blog that described how someone with similar digestion and skin problems found significant relief through Ayurveda, an all-natural healing modality that activated the body's own natural healing powers. Intrigued by this concept, he immersed himself in researching Ayurveda tirelessly. A profound shift occurred within him as he learned about this alternative healing approach, filling him with hope. This discovery became a turning point, inspiring him to delve into Yoga Teacher Training. Over the next decade, he devoted himself to extensive research and personal exploration in the realms of self-healing, cleansing, yoga, fitness, and nutrition. It became his passion and source of joy to discover ways of fostering vibrant health in a genuinely natural and non-gimmicky manner. Through this transformative process, he honed his skills and became adept at helping others undergo similar life-changing journeys. Now, he revels in radiant, healthy skin and has successfully overcome his digestion and gut-related health issues. Motivated by his own experiences, he stands ready to share his knowledge and expertise, eager to guide and support others on their paths toward improved well-being and vitality. Enjoy! Skin disease and alcohol use disorder may not be related conditions, but new research from Oregon Health & Science University suggests they could be treated by the same medication. Researchers ran animal studies and found that apremilast, which is normally used to treat psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis, had an effect on alcohol consumption. In human studies conducted at the Scripps Research Institute in California, participants who received apremilast reduced their alcohol intake from five to two drinks per day, on average.Angela Ozburn is an associate professor of behavioral neuroscience at OHSU and a senior author of the study.
