How Perfectionism Fuels Clean Eating Obsession in Millennial Moms

The Strong[HER] Way | non diet approach, mindset coaching, lifestyle advice

Send us a textWhat if your obsession with "healthy eating" is actually making you less healthy? In this episode of The Strong(HER) Way podcast, fitness and nutrition coach Alisha Carlson tackles the uncomfortable truth about orthorexia: the eating disorder disguised as wellness that's silently taking over the lives of high-achieving moms everywhere. This isn't about demonizing clean eating or telling you to give up your health goals. It's about learning the difference between healthy intentionality and harmful rigidity (and understanding how perfectionism around food can sabotage both your mental health AND your actual results).Alisha breaks down the science behind why high-achieving, perfectionist women are especially vulnerable to orthorexic patterns, what it actually looks like in everyday mom life, and most importantly, how to pursue your body composition goals in a way that's sustainable, flexible, and free from obsession. If you've ever felt anxious about eating "off plan," guilt-ridden after enjoying birthday cake, or isolated because of your food rules, this episode is your permission slip to do things differently. What You'll Learn:What orthorexia actually is (and what it's NOT—having goals isn't disordered)Why perfectionist, high-achieving moms are especially prone to orthorexic patternsThe key signs that your "healthy eating" has crossed into disordered territoryHow to tell the difference between healthy structure and rigid food rulesThe science behind why restriction and food anxiety actually sabotage fat lossHow to pursue body composition goals WITHOUT obsession, anxiety, or rigid rulesWhy your relationship with food is affecting your kids more than you thinkA practical roadmap for building flexible structure around nutritionHow to have both food freedom AND make progress toward your health goalsPerfect For:High-achieving moms who meal prep and eat "clean" but feel anxious about foodWomen who have body composition goals but suspect their relationship with food isn't healthyPerfectionist moms who struggle with all-or-nothing thinking around nutritionAnyone who's ever felt guilty, stressed, or isolated because of their food choicesMoms who want sustainable fat loss and muscle building without sacrificing their mental healthKey Takeaways✅ Orthorexia is not just about weight, it's about purity and control. It's an obsessive fixation on "clean" eating that can damage your physical health, mental health, and relationships.✅ Having body composition goals is NOT the same as having an eating disorder/ disordered eating. The difference is in the how, the why, and the cost—not whether you care about what you eat.✅ Perfectionist moms are especially vulnerable. Research shows that socially prescribed perfectionism aka the pressure to excel at everything is one of the strongest predictors of orthorexic behavior.✅ Rigid food rules actually sabotage your results. Chronic food anxiety elevates cortisol, restriction leads to metabolic adaptation, and the all-or-nothing cycle keeps you stuck in yo-yo patterns.✅ You don't have to choose between food freedom and fat loss. Flexible structure—intention without obsession—leads to better long-term results than rigid rules ever will.✅ Your kids are watching and learning from your relationship with food. Healing orthorexic patterns isn't just about you—it's about breaking a generational cycle.✅ Self-compassion isn't soft, it's strategic. Research shows self-compassion leads to MORE consistent behavior change than self-criticism, especially for perfectionist

Have you ever eaten off plan or skipped a workout—and immediately felt that familiar wave of guilt, frustration, or "what is wrong with me?" That moment matters more than you think… not because of the food, but because of what happens next in your mindset and your nervous system. In this episode of The Menopause Makeover Podcast, we're talking about the shame–cortisol cycle that so many midlife women get trapped in after a slip. I'll walk you through why beating yourself up actually drives cortisol higher, keeps your body stuck in stress mode, and makes belly fat harder to release—especially in menopause. This isn't about perfection, restarting on Monday, or fixing yourself. It's about learning how to pause, separate facts from feelings, and return calmly without spiraling. You'll hear how shortening your recovery window, calming your stress response, and choosing one wise next step can protect your hormones and support real progress. We'll also weave together faith, nervous system regulation, and practical mindset tools you can use immediately. Friend, nothing is ruined. This is practice—not failure.

What you allow into your mind every day is shaping your confidence, your courage, and your capacity to dream bigger, whether you realize it or not. In this episode, I dive into Chapter 7 of The Magic of Thinking Big by David Schwartz and explore the concept of your mental diet; the thoughts, conversations, media, and environments you consume daily. Just like your physical diet impacts your body, your mental diet directly influences your belief in what's possible for your life. Hear about the importance of creating psychological sunshine outside of your work: seeking inspiration, protecting your energy, and being intentional about who and what you give your attention to. I also share why avoiding chronic naysayers isn't about arrogance or avoidance, it's about guarding your belief long enough for it to grow. This episode is an invitation to audit what's feeding your mind, challenge the limits you've accepted, and recommit to the idea that your life expands in proportion to your belief.

Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. Editor David Horovitz joins host Amanda Borschel-Dan for today's episode. Dozens of world leaders, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Russian President Vladimir Putin, received an invitation over the past week to sit on US President Donald Trump’s Board of Peace. The US is aiming to hold the board’s first meeting on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, on Wednesday. In the meantime, various countries have reacted to their invitations to Thursday’s signing ceremony in Davos, including France’s President Emmanuel Macron. Horovitz fills us in on international responses, including shades of daylight between Netanyahu and Trump. In the hours after two babies lost their lives in an unlicensed and massively overcrowded daycare in the ultra-Orthodox Romema neighborhood of Jerusalem on Monday, Haredi leaders blamed the tragedy on the state and the legislative efforts to draft young men of the community. Two infants died and 53 babies and toddlers were injured to varying degrees in the incident. We speak about the avoidable nature of the tragedy, which, because of the prevalence of unsupervised daycare, could occur in any Israeli community at any time. And finally, regular listeners of The Daily Briefing will have missed their weekly dose of David Horovitz, who is just back from a three-week trip in Japan. We hear observations. What does patriarchy have to do with bullying, inequality, and the way children learn who holds power? In this episode, Dāli Rivera explores how patriarchy is reinforced through everyday beliefs, language, and parenting habits, often without harmful intent, and how those same patterns show up early through bullying.Through personal stories, cultural reflection, and bullying prevention work, this conversation challenges listeners to think differently about power, strength, fairness, and human value. This episode is not about blaming men or women. It is about understanding how power imbalances are taught, normalized, and passed down, and how awareness can interrupt harm before it becomes entrenched.Listeners are invited to reflect on their own experiences, assumptions, and the lessons they may be unintentionally passing on to children. How patriarchy is learned, not inheritedWhy bullying is rooted in power imbalance, not differenceHow everyday language and “normal” habits reinforce inequalityThe connection between gender norms and bullying behaviorsAddressing the “but biology” argument without denying scienceWhy equality is about fairness, not samenessHow parents and educators can interrupt these patterns earlyBullying is one of the earliest places where inequality is rehearsed and reinforced. When we interrupt bullying, we are not only protecting individuals. We are disrupting the systems that normalize harm. This episode draws on lived experience and well-established social concepts, including teachings associated with Dr. Wangari (at Towson University) , whose work emphasized cultural responsibility and collective change. When you witnessed bullying growing up, who was expected to change their behavior? What messages did you learn about strength, fairness, and whose discomfort mattered? What beliefs or habits might you be ready to question or unlearn? If this episode resonated with you:Share it with a parent, educator, or leaderExplore Dāli Rivera's bullying prevention workshops and resourcesListen to related conversations on The DaliTalks PodcastAwareness is not blame. It is the first step toward change.

Life Beyond Clinical Practice - Healthcare Careers, Health Professions, Professional Development, Career Goals, Career Transi

In Episode 2 of this Awakening series, we touch on a powerful reframe: “What If You're Not Broken - You're Just Out of Alignment?” In this episode, Dr. Diane Van Staden explores the concept of Quiet Burnout and the feelings of misalignment that many clinicians experience. She emphasizes that exhaustion may not indicate a personal flaw but rather a signal that one's work no longer aligns with their evolving values and identity. The episode encourages self-reflection and compassion as a means to navigate these feelings and find clarity in one's professional journey. Many clinicians mistake exhaustion for personal failure, when it's actually a call for change. In this one, I'm talking about Sabbath rest, not because we need another rule to follow but because of the inherent value of working from rest rather than for it. For years, I treated rest as a burden, something I gave in to after pushing myself too hard. But a simple biblical insight shared by a friend shifted everything for me and helped me see rest as preparation, not recovery. In this episode, I share that story, explore the heart behind Sabbath, and walk you through what intentional, restorative rest looks like in my own life.If you're feeling worn down, constantly on, or quietly wondering how long you can keep going like this, I want you to listen. Destination On The Left

On this episode of Destination on the Left, I'm joined by the dynamic Neelu Kaur, organizational psychologist, self-advocacy champion, author, and keynote speaker. Neelu dispels the myth that self-advocacy is boastful, and we discuss how advocating for yourself can actually be a generous and empowering act. She shares how leaders and teams can create environments where all voices are heard, exploring the innovative concept of "generous exclusion," and the importance of dialing up the "I" or the "we" when the moment calls for it. Neelu also suggests some great practical strategies for promoting authentic self-advocacy in any organization. What You Will Learn in This Episode: Why self-advocacy is often misunderstood as boastful and how to reframe it as essential for innovation What "generous exclusion" means, and how being intentional about who participates can lead to more creative outcomes How different processing styles impact participation in meetings, and what leaders can do to create safer spaces for all voices Why structure is necessary for big, creative thinking, and how frameworks borrowed from organizations like Disney help teams brainstorm and dream without self-censoring Understanding what energizes individuals creates a more productive, collaborative environment What practical steps you can take to build self-advocacy skills How Speaking Up Transforms Teams and Unlocks Personal Potential So many people, particularly women, introverts, or those from cultures that value humility, see self-advocacy as something selfish or boastful. Neelu turns this assumption on its head, describing self-advocacy as the most generous act you can do. By speaking up, you model positive behaviors for others, making it easier for those who follow in your footsteps to do the same. When you advocate for yourself, whether it's sharing an idea in a meeting or negotiating your role, you're not just advancing your own interests. You're opening doors, encouraging diversity of thought, and paving the way for colleagues who may face similar barriers. The Barriers to Speaking Up and How to Overcome Them For years, Neelu thought her professional setbacks stemmed from a lack of skills, but she realized she just hadn't learned to advocate for her ideas. Her silence was frequently misread as disengagement, and fast-paced meetings left her behind. To overcome the hurdle of seeing speaking up as boastful, she recommends self-reflection and practical steps, such as practicing self-advocacy in low-stakes situations, like choosing a restaurant for dinner with friends. Leaders and organizations also need to adjust by building meeting structures that allow quieter voices to contribute and encouraging follow-up dialogue beyond real-time meetings. Are We Over-Indexing on Collaboration? Collaboration is praised as the ideal. But as we discuss, simply adding more people to a meeting doesn't guarantee creativity—or even productivity. Neelu highlights the concept of "generous exclusion" by Priya Parker, sharing why being selective about who joins which meetings lets people focus, minimizes inefficiencies, and leaves room for deep work. Organizations often over-index on collaboration, with endless group meetings that crowd out the time needed for innovation. Instead, leaders need to be strategic, invite the right mix of creative minds, give space for diverse strengths, and allow those who need extra processing time to contribute asynchronously. Steve shares a practical framework for identifying three key communication patterns—rigid vs. fluid, rapid vs. deliberate, and external vs. internal processing—and explains how these differences show up in marriages, workplaces, and conflict. A man in chains asks for one thing: an open door for the word. From that surprising request, we follow Paul's greeting to the Colossians into a sweeping vision that can reframe a whole week. We talk candidly about why trying to “be more patient” on a Tuesday often runs on fumes, how starting with the supremacy of Christ changes our reserves, and why hope laid up in heaven becomes fuel for faith and love on the ground. We set the scene in Colossae: a church likely planted through Epaphras, growing but pressured by Gnostic whispers of “secret knowledge” and the lure of legalism. Those old currents have modern twins—spiritual shortcuts and algorithmic certainties that promise answers without wisdom. Against that, Paul centers us on Jesus: supreme over all, sufficient for us, and the true head of the church. From there, we explore calling beyond church walls. Whether you're a teacher, engineer, parent, or retiree, your daily work can be received as God's assignment to serve. Scripture threads this theme—from Joseph and Moses to Esther and Jeremiah—reminding us our placement isn't momentum or accident, but sovereign timing.Grace runs through everything. We unpack five streams—common, special, justifying, sanctifying, and persevering—and how they reshape ordinary choices. We also get practical: praying with coworkers, interceding for churches we pass, and remembering persecuted believers by name even when we can't pronounce them. Finally, we linger over Paul's triad: faith grows as we look back at God's works, hope grows as we look forward to Christ's future, and love grows as we look around at what God is doing today. The simple question remains: where do you forget to look—and how might hope refuel your faith and love this week? Send us a textWhen the lights are flashing and the clock is ticking, we train for everything—except the weight we carry home. We sit down with Coast Guard veteran and grief coach Justin Jacobs to unpack the invisible load of moral injury, the shock of losing the uniform, and the quiet ways unprocessed grief leaks into performance, relationships, and health. From the chaos of capsized boats to the stillness after a tough outcome, Justin names what many feel and few say out loud.We explore how grief hides inside anxiety, depression, and burnout, and why so many transitions—retirement, reassignment, even a “first civilian job”—feel harder than expected. Justin explains decision fatigue after service, when structure vanishes and every choice suddenly feels permanent. He offers a simple reframe: plan early, expect detours, and treat course corrections as progress, not failure. Along the way, we draw clear parallels between the Coast Guard and first responders—rapid action, limited bench strength, and constant pressure to move on to the next call. Most importantly, we get practical. Think “mental PPE”: a shared vocabulary for moral injury, short decompressions after hard calls, peer check-ins that don't try to fix but do make space to feel. We talk about what genuinely helps the bereaved—curiosity, presence, honest permission to tell the whole truth about the person who's gone—and what to retire forever, including hollow platitudes that minimize real pain. Justin's own story of loss and growth brings empathy and precision to every tool he shares. If you serve, lead, or love someone who does, this conversation is a field guide for staying human under pressure and building a culture that protects people as fiercely as it protects the mission.
