For Black History Month, we are going back through the archives and listening to the voices of some of the incredible Black Women who have been on the show.--The Year of Dismantling: Eliminating Systems that Marginalize & Oppress with Deidra Riggs first aired in January 2021.In December 2020, Deidra Riggs posted a video on her instagram saying we are going to start 2021 strong: "This is the year we eliminate systems, theologies, practices, and traditions in the church that marginalize and disqualify people who are different from us."It was at that moment that I knew we needed to have her on the Lady Preacher podcast. Deidra is preaching a message we all need to hear, and you can hear her passion seeping through her voice. The church, which is supposed to be a place where all become one has for far too long been a place that has left people out - that has pushed them to the margins and closed the door. It has invalidated, humiliated, and disqualified anyone who doesn't fit the norm. But, as Deidra reminds us, that's not who God calls us to be. The "church" as an institution is far different than the "Church" that Christ envisioned. This is the year, Deidra says, that we eliminate all those ways that the institution has choked out the Gospel.Join us. Then after you listen, share this episode with everyone you know because it's a message everyone needs to hear.About Deidra (she/her) Deidra Riggs is an author, speaker, and unashamed disco-lover. We started off 2021 interviewing Deidra Riggs, and that's how we're ending the year, too! On January 6th, 2021 we launched our first podcast of the year, interviewing Deidra about how 2021 would be “The Year of Dismantling: Eliminating Systems that Marginalize and Oppress.” She is back this week to share what she has been working on and learning this year.Full disclosure, I had originally asked Deidra to come on and talk about how we can have “an anti-racist holiday,” but our conversation morphed into SO.MUCH.MORE than that. Deidra shared about the power of anchoring yourself in your own story and culture, how to hold space for hopelessness, and how hopelessness is the real thing that pushes us towards change, and rooting our anti-racism work in love rather than shame.I learn so much every time I talk to Deidra, and I'm so excited to share this conversation with you! Be sure to listen all the way to the end to hear her talk about a BOOK SLAM she is doing on December 6th. It's $15 to participate and we at the Lady Preacher Podcast are sponsoring FIVE people to participate. All you have to do is reach out (send us an email or DM) and we'll pay the fee on your behalf. First come, first served. You won't want to miss it.Following this episode with Deidra, we'll be taking a short break through December. Thanks for being on the journey with us for 2021 - we'll see you next year!Love, your Lady Preacher Podcast team: Pastor Kelsey Beebe & Bri Daniel (our AMAZING sound editor!)LINKS FOR THINGS MENTIONED IN THE PODCAST:Advent DevotionalDeidra Riggs Website, Instagram, & PatreonBook for the Book SlamBe sure to connect with us on Instagram, Facebook, or on our website!!....In Deidra's own words:I'm Deidra (pronounced “Dee-dra”), your JEDI (Justice Equity Diversity and Inclusion) Coach. When we witness dissonance in the world around us, when we see people make terrible choices on live TV or in the parking lot of a Starbucks or in the sanctuary of our churches or in the halls of a federal building and then we still have to decide what to make for dinner that night, it’s disorienting at best, traumatizing at worst. Many of us want to know: What can I do? What is my next right thing in this? It's an important question and it's not rhetorical. Listen in. My guest for Happy Hour #107 is Deidra Riggs, author and speaker, and the visionary behind life-changing events for writers, artists, entrepreneurs, and other fabulous people who have an amazing dream. Through her engaging and relatable talks, practical and inspiring books, and first-class events, she works to cross cultural boundaries, build bridges with those who are different, and create more peace in the world while making it all feel like a fabulous celebration of life. When she’s not inspiring women to live life to the fullest and push past invisible boundaries, you can find her frolicking in the ocean, dancing to loud disco tunes, or hosting a group of her closest friends around the dinner table. In today's conversation, Deidra shares what it's been like for her and her husband to embrace empty nesting. She shares that somewhere along the way while raising children, they decided to start building an empty nest. I love her perspective, and Aaron and I really try to make our marriage the top priority in our family, so that when our kids leave the nest, we still know each other and love each other. Deidra shares practical tips on how they've been successful and are still madly in love after 30 years. She shares about loving her children through difficult circumstances and choices, her love for disco, her cartwheel regimen and her online book club for open discussion on all things hush hush. I absolutley loved my conversation with Deidra and I really hope you will too. {You can listen to the showHERE. And of course, I would love if you would share with your friends.
