Y'all know I'm an open book. If you've been listening to the podcast recently, you may know I'm in perimenopause. It's the stage right before menopause. And it can start as early as your 30s!
As head of community and business development at Chase, Diedra Porché has a deep passion for understanding the needs of the people the bank is seeking to serve. In this week's episode of Women on the Move, she joins host Sam Saperstein to discuss her role and how she empowers local communities and helps individuals build financial security and wealth. Growing along with JPMorgan Chase Diedra began her career with JPMorgan Chase nearly 30 years ago. She likes to tell people that she's had about 10 jobs and worked in three different business lines. She started her career in an officer development program in Texas, moved on to Commercial Banking, worked with the Government Banking team, and then physically moved across the country to California and helped build out the bank in Los Angeles. “It's been a wonderful journey,” she says. “I've always enjoyed staying close to customers, and working with our field teams, and representing the bank in our communities. I had no idea how much the work would evolve into an opportunity that allows us to work hand with community stakeholders to effect impact for people beyond banking. At the time when I started in banking . . . things were pretty straightforward. You went to your local branch, you worked with your local team. Fast-forward to today, and there's just a myriad of complexities that customers are dealing with.” She says that one of the most important things she learned along the way is how to work together with all stakeholders. “That means each of us has a role to play in serving communities in the best way,” she tells Sam. “And it takes private sector, it takes our public sector, and it takes our not-for-profits and our local stakeholders to really be that three-legged stool to make communities really thrive.” “We do this work together” In her current role as head of community and business development in Consumer Banking, Diedra says she's “delighted and privileged” to serve her team. “We are a collective team of leaders that have the opportunity to go into communities, build trust, to work to boost financial health so that we can put people on a path to building legacy wealth for their families,” she explains. Her team accomplishes that by providing information in the form of free financial health workshops and programming, as well as building hyper-local relationships with stakeholders. For context: Chase opened its first Community Center branch in Harlem in 2019 as part of its $30 billion racial equity commitment to build stronger ties to the community and provide banking services and financial education in underserved areas. Since then, Chase has opened 15 additional Community Centers across the country, primarily in low-to-moderate income communities.. Each Community Center features a team of local financial health experts focused on community engagement, mentorship and advice. Each Center also features a large multipurpose room which can be used to host free financial health workshops, community gathering or pop-up shops for small business customers. When asked what she's most proud of about the work her team does, Diedra has an easy answer: “First, let me just say I am delighted that in two and a half years, we really have become a part of the framework of the franchise. I tell my team all the time, we're knitted and weaved into a full tapestry of who we are as a firm.” In terms of metrics, Diedra has plenty to be proud of too. One of the most important metrics she looks at is trust metrics—how communities and consumers feel about the bank's brand. And while noting that JPMorgan Chase already enjoys a very strong brand, she says that seeing those trust metrics in the communities where her team has invested in represents a meaningful shift – it's the kind of change the bank is committed to building upon. One of the keys to success, she says, has been welcoming non-customers into community center branches to get access to education and financial health workshops at no cost to them, and not requiring them to be a customer. “Additionally, we collaborate with local nonprofits that are already working with residents and [Chase] customers in these neighborhoods,” she notes. “So in partnership with them, we're able to create programming that our communities can access either at their nonprofit location or inside our branches.” It's never too late to start…on your financial health journey Diedra offers a simple idea for anyone wanting to improve their financial health. “The one tip that I would give is to create a plan. It's never too late to start and ensure that you have a plan. Start small. Any amount that you're putting away will make a difference, and to just stay focused on those habits and stay disciplined.” Disclaimer: The speakers' opinions belong to them and may differ from opinions of JPMorgan Chase & Co. and its affiliates. Dan, Taylor, and Dave dance around to a jaunty acoustic guitar, percussion, and melodica tune. The music stops, and so do they. They all shout “DAN!” They dance again before pausing to shout “DAVE!” Once more before shouting “TAYLOR!” If that gets you in the mood for Bluey-inspired pop culture trivia, you're in luck! Monty, Levi, and Diedra find some very cute Bluey mash-ups in round one, but also some kind of weird ones let's not talk about it. Instead, we'll get very meta in round two when we see if our players can identify times on TV where an actor slyly referenced their previous onscreen work. Honestly, we wish Dan would do this more on our show by coyly dropping in direct quotes from his political TV appearances into the score updates. Will he do it? Obviously no. Taylor tried to have round three this week be a game of keepy-uppy, but his request was denied in lieu of a regular old lightning round. Sigh. SUPPORT THE SHOW FOR MORE EPISODES PER MONTH

When the restauranteur Deidra McGuiness-Ciolko opens her business with just $7 left, she must find a way to turn things around quickly or risk losing everything. "I just figured, we're going to make it, it's going to be fine. We had to close for five months and that was tough. The laws here in the Dominican Republic for the curfews are very strict, and you don't mess around. We shut down" This is Diedra McGuiness-Ciolko's story... Deidra McGuiness-Ciolko is a restauranteur and professor who moved to Costa Rica and started her own restaurant, Gordito's FreshMex. She talks about her journey from Boston to the Caribbean and her experience during the pandemic. She advises people who are thinking about starting their own businesses to be careful what they wish for and to treat their business as if it were someone else's. In this episode, you will learn the following: 1. How Deidra McGuiness-Ciolko ended up in the Caribbean 2. The three Rs of business (reduce, reinvent, relax) 3. The importance of being careful about what you wish for when starting your own business Resources: https://www.gorditosfreshmex.com/ (Gordito's on the web) Chapter Summaries: 00:00:04 - The day the restaurant opened, it had $7 left. It was a tough year for the business. As people are aging, they are turning to meditation, prayer, and getting rid of their bad habits. There is a lot of space to learn one of the three Rs. 00:00:55 - Deidra Mcguiness-Ciolko is a restauranteur professor, taco maker, and dear friend. She's going to talk about her journey from Boston to Costa Rica. Adam Lamb is a chef and hospitality professional. Adam has coached and mentored thousands of culinarians over his 30 years career. 00:02:05 - Deidra McGinnis is from Boston and she is now a taco maker in the Caribbean. She worked in Santa Domingo for nine years as the director of operations for the liquor end of a casino. After her son was born, she moved back to Florida and became a stay-at-home mom. After five years, she decided to move to Cabernette and started Gordika's FreshMex Restaurant. 00:05:38 - “resilient“ is one of his favorite words. She grew up in Boston for Irish Italian; she's had several acts and she's not afraid of doing anything anymore because she did this ” I don't often have nice things to say about me, but I'm getting there. “ 00:06:36 - There was a pandemic in the Dominican Republic. The business had to be closed for five months. The owners liquidated all their employees and bought out their partner. It was the first time in 60 years that she had any time off in the business. They were responsible for 700 people. Someone quit his job and sold his shares in a hotel company, and started his own restaurant. Deidra's advice to people who want to start their own business is to be careful what they wish and don't become their business. Deidra also advises not to treat the business as if it was someone else's business. There is a Facebook group called “asshole line cook, “ where a member wrote a harsh post about restaurants not being able to get employees because they don't pay enough. The next day the member of the group apologized for his post. Deidra is grateful to her clients for choosing to spend their dollars with her. Deidra and Joe had a midlife crisis last year and they were separated for a year and a half. Deidra has been smoking and working and drinking like a maniac since she was 20 years old. She had to learn to calm down and learn to be a duck and let things slide at her restaurant. Diedra has been using a coach for a year. Deidra has never done the hard work before. So she wasn't down with the whole coaching thing. She's been doing it now for a full year and it's helped her turn her life around. She has reconnected with Joe. https://chefliferadiocrew.com (Support this Podcast) Starfleet Leadership Academy Podcast https://realchefliferadio.captivate.fm/sla (SLA) Helt Studio Chef Uniforms...

We want to take a moment to send love, acknowledgment, and presence to you as you process and potentially transmute your experience, understanding, and impact of the racial and political violence of the murders in Buffalo, NY, and Orange County, CA. After the mass murders sitting so heavy on our hearts and in our spirits, Diedra asks Maureen to have a conversation to help make sense of how whiteness and white people often show up after a tragedy where Black people are killed. In order for us to practice Transmuting white supremacy and patriarchy, we center connection and conversation, and curiosity. Support the show

Diedra met her Kenneth while she was temporarily living in Virginia. He was in the Navy and she was there enjoying the beach and house sitting her brother's apartment while he was deployed. When her brother returned he told Diedra she was going to marry Kenneth which took her by surprise but she knew they just fit together. Diedra and Kenneth raised a beautiful biracial family where they knew they were loved and safe. Diedra shared how skin color is not the most important thing and that we are all the same color on the inside. One friendship at a time can help the understanding come and the healing begin. Sadly, in the middle of 2020, when the whole country was experiencing loss, Diedra had a tragic phone call letting her know of her own deep loss. Kenneth died on impact in a motorcycle accident. In her heartache, she remembers God wrapping arms around her and that she felt God in control. Her beautiful surprise was realizing that her love with Kenneth just didn't stop but that their relationship grows everyday. She loves being the keeper of the memories and sees his great characteristics and virtues in each of their kids. Kenneth lives on through them.

The Year of Dismantling: Eliminating Systems that Marginalize & OppressIn December 2020, Deidra Riggs posted a video on her instagram saying we are going to start 2021 strong: "This is the year we eliminate systems, theologies, practices, and traditions in the church that marginalize and disqualify people who are different from us."It was at that moment that I knew we needed to have her on the Lady Preacher podcast. Deidra is preaching a message we all need to hear, and you can hear her passion seeping through her voice. The church, which is supposed to be a place where all become one has for far too long been a place that has left people out - that has pushed them to the margins and closed the door. It has invalidated, humiliated, and disqualified anyone who doesn't fit the norm. But, as Deidra reminds us, that's not who God calls us to be. Diedra is back! We have a reunion with our dear friend and colleague, JuanCarlos. This is the first of a two-part conversation where we go deep into intersections of our racial and gender identities. In part 1 we explore the depths and interconnections of white supremacy and patriarchy and how they play out in our socially constructed identities and the vulnerable ways we do our intra/interpersonal work and how that is similar and different as a result of our varying experiences in our identities. We dig into how often we can run away from ourselves and the challenges of finally taking on the internal work when we stop running away. Some specific topics include- how whiteness participated in (eventually) bringing national outrage for the murder of Ahmaud Arbery- an exploration of the ways that whiteness has us in a state of worry if we dare rest and define our value - a consideration of what we’re NOT taking with us into the new normal Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/eyesonwhiteness)

Diedra and Maureen talk with Sonya early on in the pandemic. We come right out the gate talking about how ancestors are encouraging Sonya to shower more frequently and how white people not regularly washing their legs surfaces as a confession for Maureen.Sonya joins us from New Zealand and talks about introversion in the time of quarantine, what New Zealand's sustainable and equity centered COVID plan looked like and Diedra yells at Sonya to stop talking this logical nonsense! We talk front line workers and how perspective has shifted, the amount of hours of labor it takes to avoid Amazon’s global control, how capitalism is the devil and COVID is the universe trying to have us stop worshipping the devil, how whiteness makes up "rights" and entitlement from thin air while they protest not being allowed in the playground, what happens when you tell the structures of whiteness “no”, the genocidal impact of “keeping America open” on black and brown people, the trauma of letting in the truth of white supremacy and why people choose to sit in the illusion of comfort and the gift of avoidance. We dig into white people’s trauma that must be healed, and ask how we acknowledge our complicity without it being an indictment on our humanity…and how holding hope and compassion for white people is a mind fuck for black people, how the reckoning white people fear is actually an internal reckoning and the counter-intuitive ease that comes with being allowed to be fallible. Diedra wraps with reflecting in how transmuting White Supremacy we get to a place of asking “How do we really see that when I’m looking at you, I’m looking at me?” and the freedom and space that come with starting within instead of always fighting externally. Special bonus story about how someone erased Sonya’s name from her quote and put Brené Brown’s name on it and how whiteness played out in that process and the lesson Sonya took away about release and trust. *Spoiler alert, it played out....Sonya was just featured on Brené's podcast!Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/eyesonwhiteness)

Keynote Speaker, Author, and Singer Diedra has made the incredible journey from orphan and "lost cause" to an honor-roll student and college graduate. Her journey of survival --through the adversity of growing up in an addiction-driven household, to the loss of her parents during high school -- has enabled her to be a living example that no young person has to be a victim of their circumstances. Diedra has been speaking professionally since the age of 15. She has been recognized as a Global Young Leader by the Congressional Youth Leadership Council, and served as Miss Yuba-Sutter as well as Miss California-State. Diedra is well known for her presentations to youth regarding "The Power of Choice" but also speaks for educators on a broad range of topics including a powerful collaborative keynote with award winning educator Dr. Arlene Kaiser. Kaiser and Wallis’ keynote gives an informative and meaningful look at the classroom from both a student and teacher’s perspective. Diedra also shares her personal journey of tragedy and triumph in an inspirational and unforgettable Christian program entitled "Faith Through Adversity." Diedra is currently a full time student at California State University East Bay where she is a psychology major pursuing her life’s calling to be a drug counselor. Pro-Track Profile Diedra is also a participant in Northern California National Speakers Association 2009 Pro-Track class, where she says she has enjoyed taking her speaking career to the next level and has learned to think-outside-the box as a presenter. Diedra’ presentations have been described as vibrant and gritty. Her goal as a speaker is to combine real life experiences with practical tools that will leave you informed, affirmed, and strengthened. Diedra’s teachings are effective when applied in schools, work environments, service, and faith-based organizations.
