Devin Cuddy on his musical journey and the art of the songwriting process.
The Mulligan Stew Podcast Guest is Devin Cuddy. (Devin Cuddy band) Son of Jim Cuddy and very definitely his own man. Jim has said, on this very podcast, that he offered to school Devin and son Sam on the fine art of songwriting and playing but the guys went their separate ways. Now, Jim says he's very impressed with their growth and creativity. They've been singing together for years but just casually at fundraising events. Devin talks about a maritime tour they just did. Devin has released his first new music in 5 years. The album is called Dear Jane – with a reference to Hotlips Houlihan on the Mash TV series. The album is a soulful mix of New Orleans, honky tonk, roots and Randy Newman. Devins originals are storytelling taken to another level. He's become his own storyteller. Devin is creating his place in Canada's music world, just like his Father. One of the great surprises is Devin's cover of Barney Bentall's hit Come Back to Me. Barney sings on the track. Barney, Jim and Devin have been friends a long time. Devin says he's been waiting to sing these songs for 5 years. Should be a great 2024 for The Devin Cuddy Band. Tracks are included in the podcast.

Devin Cuddy is a singer-songwriter born, bred and based in Toronto. The Devin Cuddy Band has now released several works under the Cameron House label: JUNO-nominated Volume One (2012), Kitchen Knife (2016), and Amy's Dream EP (2018). His ever-expanding catalogue and charismatic stage presence have garnered a quickly-growing following from coast to coast to coast. Welcome back pals. Today on the G-town pod, it was lovely to chat with someone who comes from a long line of lovely Canadian musical lineage: Devin Cuddy. Devin has been noted as a versatile music maker who does a lively interpretation of New Orleans ragtime and blues but in his very own way, and who also loves to get rockin' and ramblin' with some Country-Crunchy highway songs. His latest EP "Amy's Dream" is a daydreamy character-esque piano and vocal-driven story that pulls the listener into some stark lyricism and rich dynamics. Be on the lookout for his new full-length album coming out in the fall, and more tour dates on his Instagram Page. Platinum-selling JUNO nominee Tim Hicks has blown up since earning the CCMA's Rising Star award in 2014. He's fresh from the release of a brand new live EP, recorded during his Shake These Walls tour, supporting the album of the same name. We chat with the rising country star about the new collection and how it came together, plus get a preview of his busy summer festival season. Speaking of summer festivals, Devin Cuddy has a few performances at the upcoming Sawdust City Music Festival, happening August 4-6 in Gravenhurst, ON. We chat with him about what he and his fam have in store for those performances, how far along he is with the follow-up to 2014's Kitchen Knife, and more. And finally, we checked in with our friends in BC's The Long War while they were recording at Metalworks Studios in Mississauga. We'll hear about what they've done - including writing sessions with Royal Wood at the Banff Centre - and what's still to come.
Happy Canada Day! We've got something of a stacked lineup for this week's show, featuring a trio of interviews from the recently-wrapped NXNE 2015, plus a spokesman for this year's edition of RBC Ottawa Bluesfest. On the ground in Toronto, Mike had a chance to catch up with Toronto industrial punk-gazers Odonis Odonis, Nova Scotia folksmith Ben Caplan, and singer-songwriter Devin Cuddy of his namesake trio. Also, Mark Monahan, the executive/artistic producer of the annual RBC Ottawa Bluesfest, talks about this year's lineup, their focus on nurturing local talent, and a lot more.
