Matt Andersen is a singer and songwriter from New Brunswick, Canada whose career has spanned over twenty years and somehow, despite his work being very much in my wheelhouse, I am just now learning about it all. This man's voice, his playing, his writing- it all shines on each of his records and especially so on his new record The Hammer & The Rose. The Hammer & The Rose was released on April 25, 2025 and it is squarely on my 2025 superlatives list. Before I get to my conversation with Matt, I want to thank three new Patreon patrons! Bob Beatty, Seth Gill, and Tom Romito have all joined our Patreon community lately. Patreon.com/marinadepodcast if you would like to support The Marinade and enjoy some bonus content. The song you are hearing in this episode is "Tonight Belongs To You" from Matt's new album The Hammer & The Rose. In this episode of the Tasty Brew Music Podcast, I welcome Terra Spencer, a gifted songwriter from Windsor, Nova Scotia. Every show is a knee-to-knee conversation with a natural storyteller. “The real deal.” Terra blends folk, country and soul in a way that feels both timeless and personal that has garnered her a devoted following. Keith and Glen join us for a lively conversation about reconnecting with music—this time through the lens of what some (including us!) might call a supergroup. These talented musicians have found harmony not only in their sound but also by creating space for each other's creative ideas, families, opinions, and lifestyles. Their band, Newbridge, delivers a powerful blend of Americana, folk, and roots-rock straight from Halifax, Nova Scotia. The lineup features Canadian music veterans Keith Maddison (Maddison Avenue), Glen Nicholson (In-Flight Safety), Jeff Mosher (The Mellotones, Matt Andersen), Warren Robert (Myles Goodwyn, Pogey), and Robbie Crowell (Sturgill Simpson, Deer Tick, Midland, Matt Mays)—each bringing a wealth of experience and a shared drive to craft a distinctive sound. The group's musical journey took them to Nashville, TN, where they recorded their debut album at the legendary Creative Workshop Studio (CWS), with production helmed by the multi-talented Robbie Crowell. Originally built in 1971, CWS has played host to icons like Emmylou Harris, Waylon Jennings, the Doobie Brothers, and Rod Stewart, and served as the setting for the influential music documentary Heartworn Highways. In this episode, the band reflects on their time in Nashville—complete with stories of Keith's kids as temporary roommates—and shares how mutual respect has been the secret ingredient to creating stellar new music. The hosts are joined by special guest co-host, Matt Andersen, to discuss the 14th chapter of Beyond Tragedy, The Kingdom Not of This World, which covers Jesus' dialogue with Pilate.
He's currently traversing the continent, along with a band and a production that are so big, they won't all fit on just one tour bus. He's selling out dozens of shows at concert halls that seat thousands of people. And what's he playing? Pretty much exclusively his own original roots, folk, and blues songs; and a handful written by some good friends of his. Matt's whole music career has always been exceedingly homespun and genuine. In fact, a bunch of his best friends are in his band! How is this kind of success possible? In this day and age? Well, it's incredibly rare. But it certainly helps if you have the soul, grit, presence, work ethic, humility, smarts, and sheer mind-boggling talent of New Brunswick powerhouse Matt Andersen. Matt's new album The Big Bottle of Joy is also the name he gives to his eight-piece band of brilliant musical pals. On their way through Alberta in April 2023, Matt generously shared some of his precious off time with CKUA. And he brought his guitar! Matt popped by CKUA's Edmonton studios to tell us about his musical beginnings in the tiny town of Perth-Andover, New Brunswick; how he's crafted a stellar international music career in the true time-tested way, through an endless application of blood, sweat, and tears over more than 20 years; how his friends, family, and heroes have always kept him grounded and inspired; and how the songs and the giant band on the new record were products of these difficult past three years – the one time in his life he's ever stopped for a moment to catch his breath. On top of his touching, hilarious, and wide-ranging conversation, Matt offers us a pair of exclusive performances. Given the size and scope of the band sound on the album, it's absolutely astounding to hear Matt Andersen pour his larger-than-life musical soul into an intimate, solo acoustic performance of two songs from The Big Bottle of Joy: "Only an Island" (written by his friends in the band Port Cities) and album closer "Shoes" (a song Matt wrote with Donovan Woods). Producer: Scott Zielsdorf | Host: Grant Stovel | Graphics: Shaun Friesen | Music: Doug Hoyer

Welcome to Episode 18! If you're looking for an insightful, interesting and sometimes even funny conversation about building a sustainable life, then you are in the right place! Breakfast this week is with Matt Andersen who writes The Spittoon right here on Substack:Matt talks about the evolving nature of his spirituality and how praying, even when you don't yet believe, can play an important role in recovery. We also talk about coming to understand the contours of our faith and the nature of our Higher Power. I really enjoyed the conversation and think you will, too. Here's the deal: I spend hours and hours every week trying to bring you interesting conversations and insightful gratitude lists and what not. You type your email address in there and we're even! You can check out the Liner Notes for this Episode here:I do need to say something on the stern side. But first, I need everyone to listen to this: I would estimate that 80-90% of the Alcoholic Lightning Rounds have featured a question about Wang Chung. And no one has ever gotten it right. Please pause and let that sink in. I grew so frustrated at this I began putting the song in footnotes in the Daily Gratitude List with subtle reminders like, “If you are ever on Breakfast with an Alcoholic you should listen to this.” Well, here we are. I hope you don't think I enjoy this, because I don't. Please, let's not have to talk about this again?I hope you don't think I'm angry with you, but if you do, maybe this would help...Sorry for the digression. This is a great breakfast and I think you're really going to enjoy it and you should definitely read some of Matthew's stuff because it's really good. Come have breakfast with some alcoholics! Thanks for Letting Me Share This is a public episode. Featured new albums by Calexico, Riley Family Band, Matt Andersen, and Sowal Diabi - Kaboul to Bamako. Plus a sad R.I.P. to Pastelle LeBlanc of PEI's trad trio Vishten. A bit of an Earth Day set, a preview of upcoming shows by Van Django and three Canadian blues singers, and lots more new music inspired by reading the latest issue of Songlines magazine. Plenty of songs for and about refugees, and a rousing finish with the first Pink Floyd single for many years - featuring Ukrainian singer Andriy Khlyvnyuk.
Matt Andersen - If you've ever seen Matt live, you know. You know that he's got one of the most incredible voices you'll ever hear and leaves absolutely everything on the stage night after night. In fact over the past 20 years he's toured more than almost any artist in Canada. And in so doing, has built up an insanely successful touring career selling out venues all over the world (often performing solo!). He's humble, super down to earth and extraordinarily hard working. He recently put out a stripped down album called “House to House” which is beautiful and has another full band album in the can! We chatted about all this and more. I loved every minute. Check out his site at www.stubbyfingers.ca.
