This week Brendan sits down with Dr. Ken Miller. Dr. Miller is a Professor of Biology at Brown University and is also one of the foremost advocates for science education specifically as it applies to Evolution. He was the expert witness in the famous Kitzmiller v. Dover Area School District case where he challenged the school board's mandate to incorporate intelligent design into the curriculum. He is the author of the popular books Finding Darwin's God (A Scientist's Search for Common Ground between God and Evolution), Only a Theory (Evolution and the Battle for America's Soul), and recently The Human Instinct (How we Evolved to Have Reason, Consciousness, and Free Will). On Dec. 20, 2005, Kitzmiller v. Dover Area School District—the trial that set the stage for a national debate on the constitutionality of teaching intelligent design (ID) as an alternative to evolution—was decided. In the lead-up to the trial, Michael Weisberg, professor of philosophy and chair of the philosophy department, and Paul Sniegowski, professor of biology, co-authored a letter on behalf of their departments in support of the teachers who argued against the inclusion of ID in the curriculum. We spoke with professors Michael Weisberg and Paul Sniegowski about their experience with the case—and whether public attitudes on evolution have changed—as well as lead counsel and Penn Law graduate Eric Rothschild and presiding judge John E. Jones III. Produced by the School of Arts & Sciences, The University of Pennsylvania • Interviews and narration by Blake Cole • Recorded and edited by Alex Schein Visit OMNIA online at: http://omnia.sas.upenn.edu

This week on Noon Edition, we'll be joined in studio by U.S District Judge John E. Jones. He is known for presiding over the case Kitzmiller v. Dover Area School District, which ruled teaching intelligent design in public schools is unconstitutional.
Episode 1 Features an interview with Dr. Wesley Elsberry, former Information Project Director for the National Center for Science Education who is currently a Visiting Research Associate at Michigan State University, where he works with Robert Pennock studying the evolution of intelligence through computer simulations. His enlightening discussion focuses on the state of "Anti-evolution after Dover"--how creationists have been adapting their arguments after the devastating legal blow they received during the Kitzmiller v. Dover Area School District trial in late 2005. Please spread the word about Reasonable Doubts: Your skeptical guide to religion offering news and commentary of interest to skeptics, atheists, humanists, apologists looking for a challenge and freethinkers of all persuasions.
Ann was in a great mood when we spoke to her this week. Her most recent book, Godless: The Church of Liberalism, is now out in paperback, and her next book is coming out this fall. We covered a lot of ground, from the Dover Area School District case, the politicization of science, to the presidential race and the war in Iraq. We even talked about an op-ed in the Boston Globe about a new book titled Poems from Guantanamo: The Detainees Speak. I read her a sample, HUMILIATED IN THE SHACKLES When I heard pigeons cooing in the trees, Hot tears covered my face. When the lark chirped, my thoughts composed A message for my son. Mohammad, I am afflicted. In my despair, I have no one but Allah for comfort. The oppressors are playing with me, As they move freely about the world. Her reply was classic Coulter, “Did they have any poems in there about killing all the Jews?” All of our interviews are also available for download at iTunes and Podcast Alley via the Pundit Review Radio Podcast. What is Pundit Review Radio? Pundit Review Radio is where the old media meets the new. Each week Kevin and Gregg give voice to the work of the most influential leaders in the new media/citizen journalist revolution. Barbara Forrest is a philosopher and public intellectual at Southeastern Louisiana University. Widely praised for her compelling expert testimony in the 2005 Kitzmiller v. Dover Area School District trial, she is a tireless defender of science education and the teaching of evolution in U.S. public schools. With Paul R. Gross, she is co-author of Creationism's Trojan Horse: The Wedge of Intelligent Design (Oxford University Press, 2004), which examines the goals and strategies of the intelligent design movement and its attempts to undermine the teaching of evolutionary biology. In this discussion with D.J. Grothe, Barbara Forrest examines the intelligent design movement, its history and its agenda, and the so-called "wedge strategy," including the ID movement's public relations efforts and other methods the movement has used to advance the widespread public acceptance of intelligent design. She also talks about the Discovery Institute and the implications of the theory of evolution for theistic belief.
