In a world increasingly shaped by science and technology, how do we determine what constitutes truth? What role does society play in shaping scientific knowledge consensus? And what are the implications for the future of research and innovation?  In this episode, I sit down with Steve Fuller, a renowned sociologist of science from the University of Warwick in the UK, for a thought-provoking conversation. Steve and I explore the deep connections between science and sociology, discussing how science can learn from sociology and vice versa. Steve challenges conventional wisdom and invites us to critically examine the complex interplay between science, society, and the pursuit of knowledge.  With a passion for exploring the philosophical underpinnings of science, he shares his insights on social epistemology, the philosophy of science, and the evolving role science should play in society, especially in an increasingly polarized world. —

Be Fruitful and Multiply: Embracing Multiplication in Business In the whirlwind of daily tasks and business responsibilities, it's easy to feel like you're constantly running in circles. The endless to-do lists and the mounting expectations can lead to feelings of burnout and frustration. However, by embracing the concept of multiplication based on God's message to be fruitful and multiply, you can alter your mindset, apply strategic thinking, and transform your business approach. Shifting Your Business Process Embracing God's plan means you must first lay down your plans. Many women have become masters of addition and are good at getting things done and checking off their to-do lists. However, this often also leads to burnout and frustration because they do not see the return of all their efforts. Shifting from being masters of addition to kingdom multipliers will help you implement God's purpose. The Power of a Renewed Mindset Learning to be fruitful and multiply begins with an open mindset based on Scripture. We've been programmed to do more, and many of us fall into this trap. For example: Lone Cowboy Tract: This is the thought that you need to make something of yourself. It keeps us isolated and small. Anything multiplied by 1 is still small. The Idea of Lack: When you get in the mindset of I just don't have enough ______ or If I only had ____. When you enter this mindset, you bring negatives into the equation; multiplying by a negative equals a negative. Many scripture verses tell us to change our mindset. It is an active process to renew our mindset in Christ and change our thoughts to believe that God is on our side. Community: The Heart of Multiplication Learning to be fruitful and multiply in business involves more than just strategic moves; it's about building strong, genuine relationships with others. Working together with other like-minded individuals not only amplifies your influence but also fosters mutual support and innovation. This community-first approach reflects a relational model where deep connections lead to exponential growth, much like how early successful movements have spread despite limited technology. We've talked a lot about emails on the podcast lately. And for the 406th episode of The Copywriter Club Podcast, I interviewed ConvertKit's Creator Growth Manager, Morgan Kitzmiller about newsletters, referral tools, and how to use email service providers like ConvertKit in ways you might not have thought of before. There's a lot of good stuff in this episode. Click the play button below, or scroll down for a full transcript.   Stuff to check out: ConvertKit The Copywriter Club Facebook Group The Copywriter Underground   Full Transcript: Rob Marsh: We've talked a lot about email on the podcast over the last ten or fifteen episodes. How to write them. How to make sure the emails you write end up in your reader's inbox. How to add personality and sell with emails. In today's episode, we're going deeper into how to work with an email service provider to do more with your emails. Hi, I'm Rob Marsh, one of the founders of The Copywriter Club. And on today's episode of The Copywriter Club Podcast, I talked with Morgan Kitzmiller. Morgan is the Creator Growth  Manager at ConvertKit. And she's the owner of her own business, Root and Rise. Morgan works with creators to help them grow their audiences and their businesses. We talked about how to use automations and other tools to make email a bigger part of what copywriters do. And we talked in depth about what's going on with newsletters… which tools like substack, beehiiv and convertkit are making so easy to start and run as a business. We covered a lot of ground in this interview, so make sure you stick around for all of it. Before we hear what Morgan had to share… You've heard me talk about The Copywriter Underground often on the podcast. Along with the monthly coaching, weekly copy critiques, the community and courses you get as a member, each month we bring in a special guest to go in-depth on a business or copywriting topic. This August 14, copywriter Francis Nayan who was a recent guest on the podcast will join us in The Underground to share the ins and outs of what we're calling the one-email-a-day business. He's going to break down his business model and show you how to sell digital products with a daily email. It can be a great way to diversify your income and if you want to work with fewer clients, what Francis will be sharing could be pivital to creating a business that supports you and your lifestyle. To join us for this workshop. Go to thecopywriterclub.com/tcu and sign up.  And with that, let's go to our interview with Morgan Kitzmiller. Okay, Morgan, welcome to The Copywriter Club. We like to start with your story. So tell us, how did you become the creator growth manager at ConvertKit? And I suppose it's probably connected to this business that you built for yourself, Root & Rise, as well. Morgan Kitzmiller: So actually, kind of the other way around, I built Root & Rise as a result of being involved and working with ConvertKit for a long time. Starting off at the beginning, this takes us back eight years ago. I had graduated college and was looking for new opportunities. I was an art major. I did not want to go into the art world and was just learning about different jobs or things that were out there. And I stumbled upon ConvertKit. Learn that they were hiring and really growing up the team in many ways at that point in time that was like 2016 was when Nathan our CEO hired a ton of new people like I believe the team went from. maybe four people, four or five people at the beginning of that year to closer to 20-ish by the end of that year. So there was a ton of growth in the company that year. And when I learned about ConvertKit at the time, the tagline was email marketing for bloggers. And that was a world that I had definitely consumed a lot of content in, not a world that I was directly a part of myself. I did not consider myself a blogger, did consider myself a creative being an art major.

Today I'm talking with Cassie Kitzmiller about the Spiritual principles behind accomplishing more by doing less in the Kingdom of God.   In this episode, Cassie talks about her new book Multiply which focuses on having a Kingdom perspective on money, growth, and everything we do.  This discussion about these deep Spiritual topics may challenge your thinking and what you've heard before, but I invite you to listen with an open heart and mind.  Some topics we dive into are:  What does it look like to operate our lives and businesses as entrepreneurs from a Kingdom perspective instead of a worldly one?  Cassie talks about principles found in Scripture and how we can apply these principles to our business to experience the abundance of the Kingdom.   Mindset shifts that are important for seeing our business the way God does instead of what makes sense to us.  Is it really ok for Christians to want more?  Why do so many unbelievers have wealth and Christians don't seem to and is that ok?  Building our businesses as the Body of Christ and not by ourselves.  Is it ok to set money goals as a Christian entrepreneur?    I hope you're encouraged by this episode and that you continue shifting your mindset toward Jesus so you can do all that He is calling you to do.  More about Cassie Cassie is author of the book MULTIPLY, community builder, and Business Coach for Christian Entrepreneurs. Establishing Your Brand Identity Through Design with David Preston and Morgan Kitzmiller

For those of us without a natural artistic gene, designing our brand from scratch can feel incredibly daunting. Even professional designers work tirelessly to perfect a brand's launch or relaunch. Luckily, designers say it's not worth overthinking the details, especially at the start. Taking small steps forward while continuing to focus on what's most important, creating content, will get you to your destination in one well-designed piece.Take it from David Preston, a Senior Marketing Designer at ConvertKit responsible for ConvertKit's stellar brand design, and Morgan Kitzmiller, an account manager at ConvertKit and aspiring designer who's designing a brand of her own on the side. In this episode, David, Morgan, and Miguel discuss how to start designing when the task feels overwhelming, when it's acceptable to settle for an imperfect look, practical tips and promising tools for developing your aesthetic, the right time to change your style, and the wrong time to hit refresh on a rebrand. Key Takeaways [00:53] - An intro to David and Morgan.  [03:39] - Have you heard?  [03:44] - Meta is adding exclusive content options for paying subscribers to help creators build their audience.  [06:32] - A newsletter from Justin Welsh reminds us that doing what we're passionate about makes goal-setting and discipline far easier.  [08:47] - Shopify has launched a Sell On YouTube feature and is moving toward live shopping experiences.  [10:37] - Today's main topic: Establishing your brand identity through design.  [11:14] - Design begins with an idea. Ask yourself, what is the thing you're designing about? What is the goal of it?  [12:35] - Sometimes design is approached through a problem-solving lens, other times it's purely creative. Regardless, each project lends itself to creative constraints that designers have to consider before diving in. [14:08] - Creating a brand and brand identity is daunting because there's no single output, you're creating several assets that complement a larger theme. Start by brainstorming a few words that you feel describe your brand and go from there.  [15:07] - Don't let design perfectionism stop you from releasing a brand and creating content.  [19:55] - In a practical sense, you don't have to pick an entire color rainbow all at once. Focus on just one primary color and one accent color to start.  [21:41] - Unless you're a design content creator, you can get away with having imperfect branding on day one. Even though it has been 162 years since Charles Darwin published his ground-breaking treatise, On the Origin of Species, many misconceptions and outright falsehoods about the theory of evolution through natural selection continue to persist. I was therefore incredibly honoured to be joined in this episode by renowned biologist, Dr. Kenneth R. Miller, one of America's foremost public defenders of evolution, to help clear up some of the confusion. For instance, I asked my guest to dispel the oft-repeated claim that evolution is “only a theory.” In his excellent book, Finding Darwin's God, Dr. Miller contends that the theory of evolution should be understood as both history and mechanism, so I asked him to elaborate upon what he meant. We further discussed another common creationist misrepresentation, namely that evolution is simply a random process that could not possibly account for the appearance of design we see throughout the natural world. I asked Dr. Miller about the evidence for evolution, which as I claimed now consists of many mountains, and not merely a single Himalaya, as it were, and he homed in on upon three major areas, namely the extensive fossil record, genetics, and the ability to date the age of the earth using radioactivity. We also discussed transitional or intermediate fossils, how evolution is a vast branching process and not a teleological one culminating in humans as the apex of some scale of nature, the difference between micro and macro evolution, often misused by creationists, and why the second law of thermodynamics definitely does not invalidate the theory of evolution. I received a short anatomy lesson about the poorly designed nature of the human eye, which is interestingly still used by creationists, drawing selectively and disingenuously from a single paragraph in On the Origin of Species, as a supposed refutation of Darwinian evolution. The last area of scientific interest we delved into is the call by some for an Extended Evolutionary Synthesis to incorporate epigenetics, which is an exciting new area of evolutionary biology that is expanding upon and enhancing our understanding of the mechanisms of evolution. At a few points in the discussion Dr. Miller references the relevance of evolution to the current global Covid-19 pandemic, reminding listeners that the term variants should be understood as evolution in action, while the remarkably rapid breakthroughs in developing vaccines are thanks in large measure to the flourishing field of modern genomics. Early in the pandemic, Amazon Web Services (AWS) launched the Diagnostic Development Initiative (DDI) to help organizations around the world accelerate diagnostics research and development. In the first phase of the initiative, AWS awarded $8 million in computing credits and technical support to 87 organizations in 17 countries. Some of the highlights include:   Stanford University School of Medicine's smartwatch app that detects early signs of COVID-19 Ilumina's identification of viral mutations through next-gen sequencing Chan-Zuckerberg Biohub used Machine Learning to estimate the number of unreported COVID-19 Cases University of British Columbia & Vancouver General Hospital applied machine learning to CT scans to identify indicators of COVIOD-19 and detect more severe progression of the disease. Then they open sourced the model.   Today we're talking with Grace Kitzmiller, Principal Product Manager of AWS Disaster Response about the next round of DDI. AWS will distribute an additional $12 million in compute resources and technical support to organizations working in three areas:   Early disease detection Prognosis Public Health Genomics   And while AWS will continue to support COVID-19 projects, they will also consider projects focused on other infectious diseases. The application is open now and runs through the end of the year. However, AWS is encouraging applicants to submit by July 31, 2021, for priority consideration.   In this interview we discuss:   The details of the AWS Diagnostic Development Initiative (DDI). The problems AWS is trying to solve. How AWS is measuring the success of the initiative. The highlights and major outcomes from round 1. How the program is being expanded for round 2. How organizations can apply the compute, technical resources, and subject matter expertise made available through DDI. Who should apply? Plus, we do some brainstorming on possible solutions that could benefit from the program.   This is a great opportunity for organizations to accelerate their work in diagnostics and we encourage you to check it out.   Links and Resources   AWS Activate offers startups free tools, resources, and more to quickly get started on AWS Registry of Open Data on AWS is a registry that exists to help people discover and share datasets that are available via AWS resources. Once you understand your money story, it's easier to shift your limiting beliefs and create a story that empowers you.   Creating a shift in your money belief pattern not only glorifies God in the process, but you are creating a huge impact on the world!  You want to make an impact and income and income = impact. We discuss a recent article by Donald Prothero in Skeptic magazine, in which he looks at the state of the Intelligent Design movement, ten years after its stinging defeat in Kitzmiller v. Dover. The overwhelming majority of scientists are against ID (and Creationism in general), and the courts have ruled that it's purely religious. They're not gone, but the IDiots are shifting their tactics. Can Intelligent Design make a comeback? Plus: An anti-gay preacher who gloated in the aftermath of the Orlando nightclub massacre has been arrested on suspicion of molesting an underaged male. Islamophobia at home and abroad! Newton County, Georgia has issued a moratorium on ALL religious construction, now that a Muslim group from metro Atlanta wants to build a mosque there. And in France (where they're still reeling from devastating terrorist attacks) several townships are trying to ban the burkini (a modesty swimsuit favored by some Muslim women) from public beaches.

This week, we are joined by Dr. Michael J. Behe, professor of biochemistry at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania, for an in-depth (and sometimes slightly technical) interview on the theory of Intelligent Design (ID). Author of two iconic books on ID - Darwin's Black Box, and The Edge of Evolution - Dr. Behe explains how his research into the complexity of biological systems at the molecular level led him to question the adequacy of the Darwinian paradigm, and why he now believes that the data point towards Intelligent Design. We also discuss empirical research indicating the limits of Darwinian processes, the logical status of ID theory, and Dr. Behe responds to objections to ID raised at the famous Kitzmiller vs. Dover court case of 2005. Does Intelligent Design belong in public school biology classes? What is "Intelligent Design" anyway? And how does it relate to evolution? And what does the Constitution have to say about it? We'll talk to one of the lawyers who argued the famous Dover v. Kitzmiller case, in which this very issue was put to the test. It was the second great "Monkey Trial," and this time, a federal court decided that . . . . well, you'll just have to listen to find out.

Dr. Sean B. Carroll (Professor of Molecular Biology and Genetics and an Investigator with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute at the University of Wisconsin) talks to us about evolution, his new project, and science literacy. Preview from the show: "What I am very convinced of, from all sorts of experiences of trying to communicate science, is that storytelling is a really valuable ingredient of that. And I don't mean storytelling in sort of a simplistic way, but just engaging the audience, whether they are students or teachers or laypersons, with the drama of scientific exploration, scientific discovery, even scientific debate. Because it's pretty darn common that when scientists find something new, something unexpected, there's a wrestling match for a while, figuring out whether a new view is emerging, or whether someone else is off base. And all of this is a very human enterprise - there's a whole lot of human nature in the game of science." -Sean B. Carroll, discussing a textbook adjunct from Benjamin Cummings that will be available next year "I really wish that teachers had fossil collections...I think that when kids put their hands on fossils - something happens." -Sean B. Carroll, on a wish he has for teachers "Scientific Literacy is broader than just evolution. Evolution is perhaps the poster child for the acute problem that we have. But I think that it's really hard for a student to grasp, and I think it's really hard, I think for a citizen to grasp, when they are just getting the moving banner at the bottom of CNN - [like] "scientists say", "this fossil means that" or "this gene discovery means that." Those are just punchlines and don't really understand the size of the entire enterprise or the cumulative knowledge that's built up and how that's tested and things. Now you could say - how do you convey all that? Practically speaking, I think part of the way you convey all that is that those who are communicating to the public, and I would say especially the media - have to have a better grasp of it." -Sean B. Carroll, on scientific literacy "I think getting the scientific method, and knowledge of the scientific method across in the classroom is really more important than any particular science content." -Sean B. Carroll, on teaching science "I can't encourage anyone more strongly to read what the judge said about the intelligent design case in Dover... It's a masterful opinion." -Sean B. The Science of Evolution video from the New York Times Interview from Discover Magazine "One of the most rewarding aspects of writing for a general audience has been the response of the biology teaching community. I think there is an urgent need to get new, illuminating material into the hands of teachers and their students. I am working on some new paths to do that." Charmed by Snakes - Profile in Nature. Q: What's the one thing about science that you wish the public understood better? A: "The depth and breadth of evidence supporting scientific ideas: compared with, say, the absence of evidence in areas like astrology, UFOs and ghosts." Barbara Forrest is a philosopher and public intellectual at Southeastern Louisiana University. Widely praised for her compelling expert testimony in the 2005 Kitzmiller v. Dover Area School District trial, she is a tireless defender of science education and the teaching of evolution in U.S. public schools. With Paul R. Gross, she is co-author of Creationism's Trojan Horse: The Wedge of Intelligent Design (Oxford University Press, 2004), which examines the goals and strategies of the intelligent design movement and its attempts to undermine the teaching of evolutionary biology. In this discussion with D.J. Grothe, Barbara Forrest examines the intelligent design movement, its history and its agenda, and the so-called "wedge strategy," including the ID movement's public relations efforts and other methods the movement has used to advance the widespread public acceptance of intelligent design. She also talks about the Discovery Institute and the implications of the theory of evolution for theistic belief.
