One statement that has become so common place that no one even thinks about challenging it or giving it pushback anymore, is the statement that we hear regularly that Jesus is not a democrat or a republican. In this week's episode of The Learning Curve, co-hosts Prof. Albert Cheng of the University of Arkansas and American Federation for Children's Walter Blanks speak with Dr. Keri Ingraham, Senior Fellow at the Discovery Institute. Dr. Ingraham reflects on her academic and athletic journey, including being an Academic All-American, and how it shaped her belief in discipline, opportunity, and high expectations in education. She shares that in deep blue states like Washington, Oregon, California, and New York, strong teacher union political influence has often limited K-12 reform and innovation. Despite roughly $800 billion in annual K–12 spending, she points to stagnant academic outcomes, highlighted by National Assessment of Educational Progress results, as evidence that funding alone is insufficient without meaningful school choice and accountability. She discusses persistent achievement gaps and their economic consequences, emphasizing how today's workforce increasingly rewards knowledge and skills. She also highlights the rapid expansion of school choice policies following landmark U.S. Supreme Court decisions, such as Espinoza v. Montana Department of Revenue and Carson v. Makin, and critiques testing monopolies like those tied to the College Board. Dr. Ingraham concludes by underscoring the importance of federalism and a more limited role for the Beltway in education, with states, localities, and parents leading the way on school reform efforts.

On today's classic ID the Future out of the vault, astrobiologist Guillermo Gonzalez and host Casey Luskin discuss the idea of undirected panspermia. Gonzalez explains the basic idea and what the best current evidence says about its plausibility. The occasion is his chapter on panspermia in the anthology The Comprehensive Guide to Science and Faith, co-edited by Casey Luskin, associate director of Discovery Institute's Center for Science and Culture. Undirected panspermia is the idea that the first life on our planet came from outer space, carried by chance processes from a faraway living planet on space dust, asteroids, or comets either from within our solar system, or from another star system to here. The idea of panspermia was inspired by the extreme difficulty of satisfactorily explaining the chance origin of life on planet Earth. Two of the idea's earliest proponents, Gonzalez notes, were the scientists Lord Kelvin and Svante Arrhenius, each with a different take. Gonzalez argues that our increasing knowledge about the conditions of interstellar space renders the idea of life successfully hitchhiking around trillions of miles and millions of years from a faraway star system to our big blue marble unlikely in the extreme. Perhaps no one in the intelligent design research community of recent decades was more qualified to tackle the debate over Darwinism and design than Dr. Jonathan Wells. We lost Dr. Wells in 2024, but his work lives on in his groundbreaking books, articles, interviews, and even a full-length online course. Thankfully, both mother and child survived. But we must be clear that this was not a random act of violence — it was a foreseeable failure of a system that confuses discharge with success and autonomy with safety. In Honolulu, another homeless individual perished from advanced cancer that physicians later said was treatable with timely intervention. While untreated disease ultimately took his life, it also robbed society of the human potential that could have been restored had policy acknowledged his inability to make informed decisions about his own care. The Reiner family tragedy has laid this failure bare. Two parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, were brutally murdered in their Los Angeles home by their adult son — a heartbreaking outcome in the context of his long struggles with addiction, mental illness, and homelessness. Their surviving children are left traumatized, and their family is irreparably shattered. These are predictable results of public policy choices that ignore anosognosia — a neurological condition common in severe mental illness and addiction that strips individuals of insight into their own impairment. When public policy relies on voluntary compliance alone, this version of “freedom” becomes a slow, preventable death sentence for those least capable of protecting themselves. The result is a system paralyzed by fear of intervention, even as untreated illness escalates into violence, loss, and irreversible harm. For decades, civil commitment standards have been weakened in the name of civil liberties, requiring proof of imminent danger before action can be taken. By the time that threshold is met, irreversible damage has often already occurred. Meanwhile, homelessness is at the highest point ever recorded in our nation’s history, as is the death rate amongst the homeless population, driven largely by addiction as this JAMA study from San Francisco indicates. Voluntary programs help some, but they leave the sickest behind, precisely because many individuals are incapable of making rational decisions about their own care. Housing without treatment does not heal psychosis or addiction. It merely relocates suffering. That is why the Trump Administration’s current push to strengthen civil commitment laws and expand their use represents an overdue and necessary course correction. Expanding the criteria for intervention, requiring treatment plans with accountability, and ensuring continuity of care are acts of moral responsibility. Governments that turn to court-ordered treatment frameworks and supervised care models are beginning to confront a hard truth: When individuals are too ill to recognize their need for help, the humane response is intervention. While the Homeless Industrial Complex insists involuntary treatment undermines civil liberties and that it does not work, it was the abandonment of treatment-first approaches — not their use — that coincided with an increase in homelessness, even as public spending ballooned, all under a promise to end homelessness in a decade. It is a profound injustice to allow people with brain diseases to deteriorate, die, or endanger others in the name of an autonomy they do not meaningfully possess. Addiction and serious mental illness are diseases of the brain, not moral failings. Ignoring them does not preserve freedom; it destroys lives, fractures families, and imposes devastating consequences on communities and society as a whole. Accountable compassion pairs empathy with responsibility. It invests in psychiatric beds, recovery-oriented addiction care, and the resilience of human beings. It recognizes that public safety and human purpose are inseparable values. Untreated mental illness, including improperly treated mental illness, costs the U.S. economy hundreds of billions of dollars annually through emergency care, incarceration, lost productivity, and community destabilization. America cannot afford more preventable deaths on sidewalks, more assaults in public spaces, or more families shattered by untreated disease. Thankfully, this Administration recognizes that a society that refuses to intervene until blood is spilled is not a free society at all. Morning news to start, Michelle Steeb, a visiting fellow from the DISCOVERY INSTITUTE and expert on homelessness (ran a shelter in N. California for years) has an interesting talk on where we as a society need to go on this issue.

“I'm seeing crime, chaos, and death on the streets of America. ... The homeless are being used. And Antifa, the far left activists, they want to keep the tent encampments on America's streets to show that capitalism isn't working,” said Jonathan Choe, a reporter for Turning Point USA's Frontlines and a senior journalism fellow at the Discovery Institute.At Turning Point USA's AmFest conference, I sat down with Choe to discuss his investigations into Antifa and the homelessness epidemic in America.While some nonprofits are really helping people, Choe said, he believes a sizable portion of the sector has become a multi-billion-dollar “cash cow” of grift and counterproductive aid.“For years now, the so-called experts of the medical community—instead of getting people into treatment and recovery—have been giving away free meth pipes, fentanyl foil,” he said.In 2025, he and several of his colleagues worked on a joint study by the Capital Research Center and the Discovery Institute that revealed a notable intersection between Antifa and the homelessness nonprofit space, he said.Antifa members have embedded in the homelessness nonprofit sector and many of them have day jobs in the space, he said.“A lot of [Antifa's] ideas to bring communism, Marxism, to destabilize America, to usher in a brand new communist revolution that's part of the homeless industrial complex now,” he said.In October 2025, Choe and other journalists, including Andy Ngo, participated in a White House roundtable to share their knowledge about Antifa with President Donald Trump.A month earlier, Trump had signed an executive order designating Antifa as a domestic terrorist organization.  America has had a federal policy described as housing first when dealing with those persons who have no roof over the head and live on the streets.  It is multifaceted problem which requires a bundle of services to help people get their lives in a better place.  And while affordable housing is a big problem in America, the behavioral antecedents, like mental health and addiction, must be addressed as well.  President Trump recently signed an executive order called Ending Disorder on America’s Streets, which is meant to put resources into a more comprehensive approach than what we have done in the recent years. It remains to be seen if this approach will result in greater focus on the range of services that will be required to address the surge of homeless people in America.  Joining us to discuss the issues is Michele Steeb, the founder of the Free Up Foundation and visiting fellow at the Discovery Institute’s Fix Homelessness Initiative.  She, along with David Flanagan, is the author of “Answers Behind the Red Door: Battling the Homeless Epidemic.”

In 1984, three scientists dared to probe the mystery of life's origin by putting the prevailing theories of prebiotic and chemical evolution to the test. One of those men was engineer Walter Bradley. Today, Dr. Robert J. Marks joins host Andrew McDiarmid to share some of his personal anecdotes and professional insights about Dr. Bradley, a scientist, humanitarian, and trailblazer in the world of intelligent design who passed away this summer at the age of 81. A Distinguished Fellow of the Discovery Institute, Bradley taught mechanical engineering at Texas A&M University, Baylor University, and the Colorado School of Mines.
