Since the days of Aesop, stories about animals have been used to explore distinctly human values, virtues, and vices. On this episode of Critics at Large, Vinson Cunningham, Naomi Fry, and Alexandra Schwartz consider such childhood classics as E. B. White's “Stuart Little” and C. S. Lewis's “Chronicles of Narnia” series, as well as “The Sheep Detectives,” a recent entry in this canon that centers on a flock who learn poignant lessons about life and loss. Works of adult literature, too, have explored the animal-human bond. Our tendency to project onto animals translates to the real world in strange ways, with figures like Timmy the Whale and Punch the Monkey going viral on our social feeds even as our day-to-day lives are more detached from the natural world than ever before. But the distance between us can be instructive, too. “Reckoning with their similarity to us and also their total strangeness to us . . . that's where works about animals really get me,” Schwartz says. “Not just as a direct transfer onto the human experience but also this other thing that really does enrich our lives: to be in contact with species that are not our own.”Read, watch, and listen with the critics:Homer's Odyssey“Stone Fox,” by John Reynolds Gardiner“The Mare,” by Mary Gaitskill“The Sheep Detectives” (2026)“Stuart Little,” by E. Oprørerne fra stormen på Kongressen skal have en stor pose penge, hvis det står til Donald Trump. Program publiceret i DR Lyd d. 1. juni 2026.

For years, Jonah Goldberg's enemies, acquaintances, and wife have accused him of being little more than a slightly advanced proboscis monkey. Today's guest, author Jonathan Leaf, is here to prove them definitively wrong. Jonah and Jonathan explore how similar humans and apes actually are, while also touching on warlike animals, humans and the herd, chimp violence, the Jets, polygamy, language, hardwiring, Jane Goodall, and preferential homosexuality along the way. Obama calls Texas redistricting “monkey business,” but Joe Pags breaks down the double standard — showing how blue states have long used gerrymandering to sideline Republican voters. Then, Hakeem Jeffries challenges President Trump to a debate, raising the stakes. A rare Charlie Kirk takedown of the SPLC adds a sharp warning that ties into the broader conversation. In this episode of Kiefer Than Therapy, we're diving into one of the most bizarre crime stories ever — a car thief steals a vehicle… realizes there's a baby in the backseat… RETURNS the baby… and then scolds the parents for leaving the child in the car. Criminal? Yes. Moral high ground? Also somehow yes?? We unpack the chaos and ask the important question: is this the weirdest “good deed” of the year? Then we set sail into controversy as Norwegian Cruise Line changes its dress code and the internet absolutely loses its mind. Are we really arguing about khakis on the high seas? Apparently yes. We break down why cruise attire is now a full-blown culture debate. And finally — relationship corner

St. Louis loses control of its wildlife, Rizz loses his beard, and somehow figure skating becomes the most emotional thing we've talked about all year.If you woke up thinking, “There's no way today gets weird,” congratulations — you don't live in St. Louis. This daily comedy show starts with Rizz debuting a freshly shaved face he did NOT consent to, immediately followed by reports of multiple monkeys on the loose in Saint Louis' North City. Not one. Not two. Multiple. Including one wearing a collar and chilling in a woman's car like it was her pet. From there, The Rizzuto Show does what it does best: spirals. We break down how our show has somehow become the region's leading authority on monkey-related news, debate whether the city has officially entered its Jumanji era, and discuss the ethical implications of adopting a wild monkey mid-traffic stop. Then — surprise — we pivot to figure skating. And not in a “oh that's neat” way, but in a “why are we crying at jumps?” way. Enter The Quad God, a man so dominant he made Olympic-level athletes look like background extras. Rizz and Rafe attend the U.S. Figure Skating Championships and come back with stories about insane athleticism, emotional interviews, and falling on ice being WAY too relatable. As if that wasn't enough, the show also tackles Gen Z's obsession with 2016, introduces the internet's newest insult — the “choppleganger” — breaks down Nikki Glaser absolutely owning the Golden Globes, and dives into why modern parents are turning sleepovers into competitive Olympic events of their own. It's chaotic. It's heartfelt. It's wildly unnecessary in the best way possible. In perhaps the monkiest Infinite Monkey Cage episode there's ever been, Brian Cox and Robin Ince attempt to uncover the secrets of love, lust and friendship in primates. Swinging by to offer a hand (or tail) are evolutionary psychologist Robin Dunbar, anthropologist Jo Setchell, and comedian Dave Gorman.Together the panel explores Dunbar's number in monkeys – the idea that the number of friendships an individual can maintain correlates with brain size – with the very creator of the theory! They ask whether monkeys feel love the way we do, why some species remain strictly monogamous but others don't, and what we could learn about ourselves through studying them. Episode #700! Such an occasion calls for a special episode as I give you reviews of not 1, not 2 but 3 old comedies all in 1 show. This is the first time on Have You Ever Seen for Laurel & Hardy, although the Marx Brothers and Cary Grant have been gabbed about a lot in the past. Grins can be had...even though many of these talented people went back to the same comedy well over and over again. I also addressed some emails from you listeners.
