Is aggression inevitable?

“There is no such thing as a raw, natural, aggressive urge that underlies human violence. While we inherit defense mechanisms, they work only when triggered culturally.” So opens John Protevi's Regimes of Violence: Toward a Political Anthropology, which takes as its biocultural basis that social practices shape our bodies and minds, and analyzes human aggression throughout history: early nomadic foragers, organized sports, berserkers and blackout rages, maroons escaping slavery, the January 6th invasion of the US Capitol, and responses to the Covid-19 pandemic. Protevi entwines the philosophical with the anthropological and considers why humans' capacity for cooperation and sharing is persistently overlooked by stories of aggression and warfare. This book is an important contribution to the studies of Deleuze and Guattari, and here, Andrew Culp (Dark Deleuze) and Protevi (“joyous Deleuze”) dig into myriad shades of human expression from philosophical and cultural perspectives.John Protevi is professor of French studies and philosophy at Louisiana State University and author of Regimes of Violence: Toward a Political Anthropology; Political Affect: Connecting the Social and the Somatic; Life, War, Earth: Deleuze and the Sciences; and Edges of the State.Andrew Culp is director of the MA Aesthetics and Politics program at California Institute of the Arts and author of Dark Deleuze and A Guerrilla Guide to Refusal. Episode references:Francisco VarelaEvan ThompsonEsequiel Di PaoloHanne De JaegherFrancisco Varela, Eleanor Rosch, Evan Thompson / The Embodied MindWilhelm ReichBaruch SpinozaSigmund Freud Gustave Le BonJeremy Gilbert / Common GroundRodrigo Nunes / Neither Vertical nor HorizontalManuel DeLanda / War in the Age of Intelligent MachinesManuel DeLanda / A Thousand Years of Nonlinear HistoryDeleuze and Guattari / Anti-OedipusBatailleNietzscheMarxFreudDeleuze and Guattari / A Thousand PlateausClaude Lévi-Strauss / Wild ThoughtLisa Adkins / The Time of MoneyArline T. In this episode I'm joined by No More Adjectives to wade into the topic of Anarchy full bore. We get into our common sense definition of what ‘Anarchy' means to us and it's ancient Greek origins, what made him an Anarchist as well as his deep dives into theory and subsequent quasi-rejection of it in favor of putting Anarchism into practice via Mutual Aid with AnComs in his local area, looking to successful Anarchist communities today like the Zapatistas in Southern Mexico and Rojavans in North-Eastern Syria, we get into the differences between leaders and rulers, the tribalist nature of people, including Anarchists looking for ‘their tribe' and the bombshell revelation of how lawns are both dumb and worse, French. We also discuss community building for preppers and likeminded people and the importance of being a social animal over a hermit, ‘Unions of Egoists', why ‘ideology' and labels are a constraint and much more! Surviving Empathy
BONUS EPISODE- Self-caring, Content Creators vs Egoists, Keeping Your Life Small & Heart Big, What's to Come Next Week in Season 3 Opener

On this fun and light bonus episode Rebecca and I talk about self-caring in these particularly weird and stressful times, and we talk about going through fibro pain and migraines, and the necessity to selfcare whenever necessary for mental or physical health upkeep. We talk again a little bit about the difference between content creators with real expertise vs those just doing it to feel self-important, who often give bad information, do it to feel superior, or who target others for no good reason other than to climb to their higher status. That said, we strive to get folks to believe in themselves and to escape bad jobs where perhaps they feel depressed, hopeless, or persecuted, and to believe in themselves enough to go for it! But when you do that though, the importance of not allowing that power to go to your head, or inadvertently damaging others in the process. Then we talk about all the paranormal stuff to comer in the season 3 opener NEXT WEEK! BRAND NEW! In this episode of Functional Philosophy, I answer the following questions: 00:39 - "Are altruism and nihilism compatible with each other? [...] Egoists believe that one's own life is the standard, and one's own happiness is the goal. Altruists believe that other people, or something other than their own life, is the standard of value, but what is the goal?" 13:25 - "Why should I turn away government money by not collecting welfare? Wouldn't taking it benefit me? The destructive act of rights violation lies in the taxation, after all. Not the later distribution." 15:26 - "Your [view of gun rights] was something along the lines of "if the products only purpose is to cause massive casualties, and using it in a self defence situation would result in large amounts of collateral damage then it should be outlawed. Please correct me if I'm misattributing this sentiment to you/rand. My issue with this notion is that take for example dynamite, it has a purpose outside of mass casualties related to production and efficiency [...] Its fairly easy to claim multiple purposes for any weapon (You could mine the moon with a nuke, or to bring it back to earth, you could use an automatic weapon as a crude long distance hole punch)" *** Functional Philosophy is the show in which Objectivist philosopher Charles Tew helps you gain and strengthen the philosophical foundations required to achieve certainty, success, and happiness. If you're curious to see how Ayn Rand's philosophy of Objectivism can bring revolutionary clarity to your life, give it a listen.
