190 I made you a special short quiz to determine the level of dysregulation in your unique nervous system. (This episode goes hand in hand with episode 189, so I highly recommend listening to it first, or after you take the quiz.)Why should you take it? Because as highly sensitive people (and really, as just regular human beings on this planet in these modern times), our nervous systems are often chronically dysregulated. And this has a major impact in a not-so-great way on our lives in general and especially on our relationships. So you need to understand if you have a nervous system that is dysregulated chronically or that tends to get easily dysregulated.Unfortunately this can happen even more easily for us than non-HSPs. When we are dysregulated, we react more strongly than we normally would, in one way or another, and that leads to much more drama, much more struggle in our relationships, and a lot less clear, effective communication, a lot less getting through to our spouses, and being able to really hear each other, a lot less open-heartedness and connection, and a lot less feeling the mutual supportiveness and sense of being on the same team.So there really are many different ways that nervous system dysregulation can show up to the detriment of your relationship and to the detriment of your life in general. And you do want to know if it is happening for you so that you can make the necessary changes. Because that's the really good news: you have so much sway over your nervous system regulation or dysregulation. It just can take a little bit of learning and attention to it.Dive in now with pen and paper in hand.SHOW NOTES:Take the Dysregualtion quiz here in written format.Learn all about Foundations of Emotional Well-Being Course; The Root Of A Better Relationship here. Why do HSPs feel like they're fighting an uphill battle in a world that's lost its conscientiousness? After working with HSPs for nearly two decades, I've learned we're the people who value conscientiousness in society - that's our gift, not a weakness. Through therapy and self-awareness, sensitivity transforms from burden into extraordinary beauty. The sunrise that makes you cry with joy, the stranger's child who warms your heart - these experiences are available to every HSP who learns effective coping strategies. If you crave authentic connections with other highly sensitive women, listen to this episode of the Awaken Your Wise Woman podcast as host Elizabeth Cush talks about building and sustaining a supportive community. “It's amazing to me that the space can hold women who have never met before, and they come away from it feeling as if deep connections were made.” — Biz Cush Few things in life feel as wonderful as connecting with someone who really gets you. It can feel comforting, validating and exhilarating all at once. But for highly sensitive women, it can be difficult to find those people who understand us and cherish our gifts of sensitivity. In this episode of the Awaken Your Wise Woman podcast, host Biz Cush, LCPC, a licensed professional therapist, founder of Progression Counseling in Maryland and Delaware, and a soul support for highly sensitive women, talks about making those connections and building a community of like-minded women—and how you can be a part of it. The moment someone tells you "you're just too sensitive," a little piece of you might shrink inside. That dismissal of your experience happens far too often for the 15-20% of us who identify as highly sensitive people. But what if your sensitivity isn't a weakness to overcome but an important aspect of who you are—one that deserves understanding, especially when chronic pain enters the picture?Sensitivity creates a unique relationship with pain. Your heightened awareness of both internal and external stimuli means your nervous system processes the world differently. Like a smoke alarm with the sensitivity dialed up, your brain might trigger pain signals more readily than others. This doesn't make your pain any less real; it simply means your path to healing might look different too.Throughout this episode, we share personal stories about navigating life as sensitive people (our whole household qualifies—except perhaps our fearless cat, Hermione!). Tanner opens up about his experiences from childhood through adulthood, from feeling overwhelmed in locker room roughhousing to managing financial stress differently. These aren't stories of weakness but illustrations of how differently our nervous systems can be wired. The good news? Understanding this connection unlocks powerful healing possibilities. Rather than fighting against your sensitivity, we explore how embracing it while developing regulation skills creates lasting relief. Through embodiment practices, safety signals (like breathwork and movement), and gradual exposure to overwhelming stimuli, you can teach your brain new patterns while honoring your sensitive nature.Your sensitivity likely gives you gifts others don't share: deeper empathy, creativity, meaningful connections, and an appreciation for beauty's subtleties. As you listen to this episode, we hope you'll begin to see your sensitivity not as something to overcome, but as an essential part of you that—when properly understood—might be your greatest strength in overcoming chronic pain and creating the life you truly desire.Tanner Murtagh and Anne Hampson are therapists who treat neuroplastic pain and mind-body symptoms. They are also married! In his 20s, Tanner overcame chronic pain and a fibromyalgia diagnosis by learning his symptoms were occurring due to learned brain pathways and nervous system dysregulation. Post-healing, Tanner and Anne have dedicated their lives to developing effective treatment and education for neuroplastic pain and symptoms. Listen and learn how to assess your own chronic pain and symptoms, gain tools to retrain the brain and nervous system, and make gradual changes in your life and health! Meet Jole Berlage-Buccellati, a holistic coach who works with highly sensitive people. She helps these individuals build self-worth and become effective leaders and business people in a world that is not built for people like them. Jole says that 20% of the global population is a highly sensitive person and that despite our world that rewards loudness and narcissism, sensitive people still have great gifts to give to the world. She speaks about her work building her theories about sensitivity and how it brought her an understanding of herself and many of her clients. It has been work she has done to help people focus their empathy and caring for others in a way that is effective and helpful. Listen to her thoughts about the strengths of being a highly sensitive person, how more sensitive people in leadership can benefit the world, and how a sensitive person can take care of themselves in this week's episode!Key Takeaways:Our world says it's okay to be a sensitive person as long as you're a woman who is not in business or an artist of some sort. If not, the world punishes you for being a person who cares for the world deeply. Many highly sensitive people have been bullied at some point, but especially at school. This harms their self-worth and makes them feel as if no one understands them.Being highly sensitive can be a very complex experience and building community around people like them is one way they can help make themselves feel less alienated.Jole is writing a book about highly sensitive people and why they're so important in our current political climate globally.Finding your voice is important in order to make sure you can be heard. Many highly sensitive people are overwhelmed or introverted (or both!) but that is something they need to work through in order to be more effective.Use your ability to notice others' feelings and mental states to know when someone needs to take a time out, or a break, in order for their feelings to not overwhelm yours.Jole's links:WebsiteInstagramPodcast

Healing from narcissistic abuse involves recognizing and stopping harmful patterns like self-blame, excessive politeness, emotional avoidance, and denial. Highly Sensitive People often sabotage their recovery by prioritizing others' comfort, minimizing the abuse, or ignoring their gut instincts. To truly heal, it's essential to name abuse clearly, trust intuition, establish healthy boundaries, and choose authenticity over appearances. Have you ever found yourself in a relationship that started like a dream: intense, exciting, and deeply validating, only to slowly unravel into something confusing, painful, and even toxic? If you're a highly sensitive person (HSP), you may have noticed a pattern: You attract people who seem drawn to your empathy, your kindness, and your deep capacity for love... but over time, they leave you feeling drained, manipulated, or even questioning your own reality. Why does this happen? And more importantly, how can you break free from this cycle? In today's episode, we're diving into one of the most complex and painful dynamics out there: the attraction between highly sensitive people and narcissists. And I'm joined by a powerful guest Marla who has lived through this firsthand. She'll be sharing her deeply personal experience of being married to a narcissist, how she realized what was happening, and how she found the strength to walk away. We'll also explore why HSPs are particularly vulnerable to narcissistic relationships, the red flags to watch out for, and how to set boundaries that protect your peace without losing your beautiful sensitivity. Studies show that men, especially, feel its lack, which tends to take a big toll on the sense of love and connection in that relationship. Why is this so common? Well, for one, it does not always come naturally to be respectful. Or we wait for them to be more loving first. So, in this episode, let's:Clear up the misconceptions about what respect looks likeClarify exactly what many women do that leads men to feeling disrespected (it can be less obvious than you may think)Discover why, if your partner is feeling disrespected, it is hurting your whole relationship and making it harder for you to feel loved, too Learn about why it matters so much to cultivate respect–especially if you are married to a man.And get 10 specific things to do and ways to communicate to build more mutual respect– and ultimately love– into your marriage. If you want to feel more loved, and even like a treasured queen, you want to start leading more respect into your relationship. Highly sensitive women may feel childhood wounds deeply. In this episode of the Awaken Your Wise Woman podcast, host Elizabeth Cush talks about how your parts help protect you and how you can heal. “We're learning to build a compassionate, kind loving relationship with ourself. Through that process, all parts of us learn to trust us.” — Biz Cush Not all childhood wounds are physical. If we didn't get our emotional needs met when we were young, we can carry those hurts with us well into adulthood. We can feel the impact of those childhood traumas on both our physical and mental health, in turn affecting how we show up in the world. In this episode of the Awaken Your Wise Woman podcast, host Biz Cush, LCPC, a licensed professional therapist, founder of Progression Counseling in Maryland and Delaware, and a life coach for highly sensitive women, talks about adverse childhood experiences like childhood emotional neglect, the mechanisms we develop to cope with them and how they show up in our “parts.” She'll also share how Internal Family Systems (IFS) work—getting to know our parts and approaching them with curiosity and compassion when they are triggered—can help us build a kind, caring relationship with ourselves that meets the needs of our bodies and our emotions, helps heal those old wounds, and empowers us to show up in the world from a more grounded place.
