DryCleanerCast a podcast about Espionage, Terrorism & GeoPolitics
This week, Matt is joined by terrorism researcher Jacob Ware to unpack the rise of nihilistic violent extremism—attacks carried out by disaffected young men radicalized online without any clear political goal. They explore how social media fuels this chaotic new threat, why the FBI created a new classification for it, and what makes networks like 764 and the Order of Nine Angles so dangerous. Then, they turn to the recent string of violent antisemitic attacks in the US and what they reveal about the blurred lines between far-left, far-right, and jihadist extremism. It's a disturbing look at the future of terrorism, and what it means when violence itself becomes the ideology. In Episode 6 of the Shipwreck Show, Shipwreck tackles the wildfire of propaganda burning across social media, from left-leaning influencers pushing ICE panic to conservative talking heads parroting the same pre-approved scripts. With characteristic sass, she breaks down how paid influence campaigns manipulate emotions through staged videos, fake audio, and strategic outrage. From TikTok psyops and media hypocrisy to viral misinformation about ICE raids, Shipwreck calls out both sides for their part in narrative warfare. But it's not all fire and fury, this episode takes a deep turn into the emotional exhaustion of political deception and the spiritual spiral of nihilism. Shipwreck shares a powerful segment on purpose, motherhood, and finding meaning when nothing seems real. Featuring viral clips, Bigfoot stickers, a Sasquatch swear jar, and raw reflections on identity and faith, this episode is equal parts therapy, truth bomb, and comic relief.

In this episode, I'm joined by Eron from Re-Education to talk about anarcho-nihilism—what it is, what it isn't, and whether it's all just edge-posting or if there's something worth digging into. We talk about individualist anarchism, Stirner, egoism, and what it means to resist when you don't believe a better world is coming. Is this a real political tendency or just vibes and chaos? And what do you do when you agree with the critiques but still want to build something? It's a messy, open-ended conversation—but maybe that's the point.
This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit wisdomofcrowds.liveWe live in an increasingly weird world, where the weirdness is facilitated and accelerated by the Internet. We live in a world full of instantly-available bizarre pornography and terrorist attacks inspired by misanthropic ideologies whose manifestos are published online. Katherine Dee, an Internet ethnographer, writer and friend of Wisdom of Crowds, joins Christine Emba and Shadi Hamid to talk about the recent terrorist attack on an IVF clinic in California and Christine's recent New York Times article about the social damage wrought by porn.Shadi shakes things up by posing a blunt question at the very beginning: Should we ban porn? It hurts men as well as women. Why not? Can we reconcile the ideals of liberalism with a state effort to suppress pornographic content? This question inspires Christine and Katherine to reflect about the ethics of sex work, the perils of reporting on dangerous and soul-crushing topics, as well as signs of hope in American culture.Throughout, Katherine applies her trusty reporter's eye toward making an accurate, non-judgmental and perceptive account of what's really going on with sex and ideology on the Internet. Christine, for her part, makes the case of norms and shame as useful tools for making society better. Shadi, in Socratic fashion, tests the strength of his interlocutors' arguments. In the bonus section for paid subscribers, Katherine explains the nuances of “efilism” and “promortalism”; Shadi reflects on the meaning of suffering and how belief in God changes one's approach to suffering; and Christine reflects on “cold, rational logical measure — suffering v. pleasure. Pleasure v. nothing.”Required Reading and Listening:* Christine Emba, “The Delusion of Porn's Harmlessness” (New York Times). * Katherine Dee, “An Efilist Just Bombed a Fertility Clinic. Sometimes in life, we choose the wrong path. When we feel like we're living a lie, it's hard to know what to do next. That's where Suzy Welch comes in. She's obsessed with helping people create lives worth living. A professor at NYU's Stern School of Business, Suzy teaches a popular class called “Becoming You,” where she takes students down a brutal, but liberating, journey to live as their authentic selves. According to Suzy's research, purpose is the key to unlocking the real you, but finding that purpose is often trickier than we imagine.I had a blast talking, and debating, with Suzy about what it means to craft a purpose-driven life. In this conversation, she shares with me the difference between passion and aptitude, the reason luck is overrated, and why so many people struggle to know their own values. To learn more about Suzy and her work, check out:her book, Becoming Youand The Becoming You Podcast with Suzy Welch

ORIGINALLY RELEASED Apr 3, 2023 Professor Matt McManus returns to Rev Left to discuss his latest book, Nietzsche and the Politics of Reaction: Essays on Liberalism, Socialism, and Aristocratic Radicalism—a provocative collection he edited featuring diverse perspectives on one of the most misunderstood thinkers in modern philosophy. We unpack Friedrich Nietzsche's actual political views, challenge the liberal and fascist misreadings, and explore what the socialist left can critically learn from him. From his attacks on Christianity and herd morality to his complex relationship with nihilism, the death of God, and radical subjectivity—we dive deep into Nietzsche's legacy and wrestle with how the left can engage him without falling into reactionary traps. A rigorous and fascinating conversation for those who want to sharpen their understanding of western philosophy and break free from lazy and shallow interpretations. Welcome back to the Fintech Takes podcast. I'm your host, Alex Johnson, and today, one of our favorite guests is making a triumphant return visit—Frank Rotman, founding partner and CIO at QED Investors. Frank has a theory: in his words, the game of life is getting “harder to win.” Debt is piling up, wages are stagnant, and folks are being told they're the only ones to blame for their financial struggles. His observation is that more people see themselves as playing PvE (Player vs. Everyone), prioritizing personal survival over collective outcomes. In a world where following the rules doesn't pay off, so-called "irrational" moves like crypto gambles start making a lot more sense. We unpack what this shift means for finance, behavior, and the economy. Then, we take on a big question: is traditional financial theory broken? The old "work hard, save, invest in a 60/40 portfolio" model no longer delivers retirement security, and that's because rising costs, debt, and economic shifts have eroded its effectiveness. So, what might replace it? And how can avoiding financial mistakes be just as important as making smart investments? And finally, we explore how AI is rewriting the future of finance. Instead of generic, one-size-fits-all advice, AI-powered financial guidance could be real-time, scenario-based, and deeply personalized (aka imagine a 150-IQ financial strategist that can help you make smarter decisions on the fly...by actually talking to it? That future's not so far away). Instead of shopping for financial products, what happens when AI can custom-build financial products to fit our specific needs? Would that create a system that works for everyone—or just make it even more complex? Join us for a deep, challenging, and necessary conversation about the future of money, markets, and human behavior. Donald Trump launched a global trade war because he thinks America's trade deficit makes us “losers,” but does he even understand what a trade deficit is? Phil introduces a new segment full of statistics that make Kaitlyn and Skye groan. And they discuss David Brooks' new article in The Atlantic, which compares this moment in U.S. history to the era of Andrew Jackson, and offers hope for what may come after MAGA. Skye interviews Jonathan Rauch about his new book, “Cross Purposes.” Rauch, an atheist, says his antagonism toward Christianity changed when he came to see how vital it is to American democracy and why evangelicals' failure to follow Jesus is putting the whole country at risk. “Our dear friend Yashoda, your son sometimes comes to our houses before the milking of the cows and releases the calves, and when the master of the house becomes angry, your son merely smiles. Sometimes He devises some process by which He steals palatable curd, butter and milk, which He then eats and drinks. When the monkeys assemble, He divides it with them, and when the monkeys have their bellies so full that they won't take more, He breaks the pots. Sometimes, if He gets no opportunity to steal butter or milk from a house, He will be angry at the householders, and for His revenge He will agitate the small children by pinching them. Then, when the children begin crying, Krishna will go away.” (Shrimad Bhagavatam, 10.8.29)

Grandpa Bill-Nihilism-3/27/25 GB-1. Existentialism as a Response to Nihilism:Before we dive into how existentialism can help us move 'From Angst to Action,' it's important to understand its origins, As our esteemed guest, Byron Athene, will be pointing out, existentialism emerged, in part, as a response to nihilism. Nihilism, at its core, declares that 'life is meaningless because nothing matters.' This can lead to a bleak outlook, as Byron described, where 'nothing matters so why do we care? We might as well screw everybody over and to hell with the consequences!' However, Byron also suggests a more positive interpretation: 'nothing matters so why don't we make the most of this and enjoy the short time we have as much as possible?Against this backdrop, existentialism asserts that 'life has the meaning we give to it.' As Byron so eloquently puts it, 'I think that makes clear that everybody is an existentialist whether they know it or not because we're all giving life our personal meanings and responding to them. Catholics say, this is the meaning of life. Buddhists say this is the meaning of life, so...we create meaning.2. Existential Reframing:Byron will probably also introduce us to the concept of 'existential reframing,' a powerful tool for navigating life's challenges. He contrasts this with positive reframing, which seeks to find positives in negatives. Existential reframing, that he'll explain, is 'acknowledging that life is infinitely more important than anything existing within it.' So, even in a less-than-ideal situation, we can recognize that 'you're in a really lucky position to be alive to have that problem.' This shift in perspective can empower us to find solutions or make the most of our circumstances."3. Absurdism:Finally, Byron will touch on absurdism, another philosophical response to the search for meaning. Absurdism suggests that 'we strive to find meaning but doing so is an absurdly impossible task because we're never going to know.' As Byron illustrates, 'We're just metaphorical ants in an ant farm on the desk of a scientist.' This perspective acknowledges the inherent limitations of human understanding."Grandpa Bill will ask Byron, Byron, with these viewpoints in mind, how does this affect the way you treat your patients, and how you view the nature of the mind?Byron can then expand on how these philosophical viewpoints inform his practice.Questions for Byron Athene:Byron, with nihilism, existentialism, and absurdism in mind, how does that affect your work with clients in the UK?How do you help clients distinguish between the nihilistic despair and the existential freedom to create meaning? Can you provide examples of how existential reframing has helped your clients navigate difficult situations? How do you address the 'absurd' in therapy, and help clients find peace with the limitations of human understanding? How does the cultural climate of the UK influence the way people approach these philosophical concepts? In your opinion, how can individuals apply these philosophical ideas to their daily lives to enhance their well-being?How does a psychoanalytic viewpoint interact with an existential viewpoint?Nihilism, Existentialism, and Absurdism: A Conversation with Byron AtheneFrom Meaninglessness to Meaning: Existentialism in Everyday LifeExistential Reframing: Turning Challenges into OpportunitiesFinding Meaning in the Absurd: A Philosophical Approach to Well-BeingThe UK Mind: Psychoanalysis and ExistentialismGrandpa Bill and Byron Athene: The Meaning of LifeFrom Angst to Action: A Philosophical Discussion#Existentialism,#Nihilism,#Absurdism,#ExistentialReframing,#Psychoanalysis,#Psychotherapy,#MentalWellness,#MeaningOfLife,#GrandpaBill,#ByronAthene,#bhsaleskennelkelpholistichealinghour ,#@billholt8792,#UKTherapy,#Philosophy,#SelfDiscovery,#PersonalGrowth,#AnxietyToAction,

On critical theory and autonomy. [For the full episode, subscribe at patreon.com/bungacast] Jensen Suther, a junior fellow at Harvard working in philosophy and literature, talks to Alex H and contributing editor Alex Gourevitch about art, culture, and socialism. He also offers a riposte to previous guest Anna Kornbluh's discussion of immediacy, and its cultural forms such as autoficition. What does Suther think Kornbluh gets wrong – and right – in her critique of contemporary culture? How autonomous is art from society and the economy? To what extent can we tie cultural forms to deep changes in the economy? What is the right response to the historical defeat of the working class? What does it mean for critical theory? What is the difference between immanent critique and critique from the outside – and how dow this relate to freedom? And what does it matter if you read Hegel right? So this started with a Substack note that semi-blew up, and it pushed me to expand on something I've been thinking about for a while: rebellion, aesthetics, and how edginess functions as a kind of political currency (or all of those combined do). I talk about Red Scare. But this isn't just about them. It's about the death of irony, the collapse of aesthetics into ideology, and what happens when leftist politics forget how to maintain an edge in favor of an oversimplified and marginalizing ethic. I talk jouissance (Lacan and stuff), performative rebellion, reactionary grifting, and the slow shift of “edgy” from leftist cultural critique to right-wing nihilism. I touch on why moral posturing turned the liberal left into the new status quo—and why Dasha and Anna's (Red Scare ladies) vibe shift might be the most revealing political litmus test for our current cultural and political moment. This episode is about how rebellion gets hollowed out, how irony can curdle into belief, and how our politics are increasingly built not from principles, but from vibes. Are you ruled by reason…or by desire, rage, and the need for transgression? Is that really a base for a moral framework? Anyway…i'll have more stuff around this idea. I need to further develop how nihilism is at the heart of the rot….Stay curious. Picture this: it's 2020, you're clinging to sanity, and a frozen steak your mom used to eat after school called SteakUmm is now tweeting in the hopes of turning you into a socialist. But... what? Can one be radicalized by hot dog grade meat? Is what's being sold here an idea or microwaveable meat slop? In our penultimate installment of the Sentient Brands series, Jamie gets into the weeds with the mind behind the SteakUmm account, writer and social media director Nathan Allebach. Subscriber-only episodeIn this recorded X space, I discuss the history and the philosophy of the crisis of the sciences that emerged in the late 18th and continued through the 19th century and into the 20th century. This discussion is meant as a broad introductory survey to where things stand presently with regard to science in its relationship to philosophy which justifies why my entire "Technology and Nihilism" series is relevant for all of us, despite our own various fields of study and particular areas in interest in philosophy.

We also discuss whether Nietzsche himself was nihilistic. Finally, we talk about how nihilism manifests in contemporary society, and whether it can be overcome. -- A HUGE THANK YOU TO MY PATRONS/SUPPORTERS: PER HELGE LARSEN, JERRY MULLER, BERNARDO SEIXAS, ADAM KESSEL, MATTHEW WHITINGBIRD, ARNAUD WOLFF, TIM HOLLOSY, HENRIK AHLENIUS, FILIP FORS CONNOLLY, ROBERT WINDHAGER, RUI INACIO, ZOOP, MARCO NEVES, COLIN HOLBROOK, PHIL KAVANAGH, SAMUEL ANDREEFF, FRANCIS FORDE, TIAGO NUNES, FERGAL CUSSEN, HAL HERZOG, NUNO MACHADO, JONATHAN LEIBRANT, JOÃO LINHARES, STANTON T, SAMUEL CORREA, ERIK HAINES, MARK SMITH, JOÃO EIRA, TOM HUMMEL, SARDUS FRANCE, DAVID SLOAN WILSON, YACILA DEZA-ARAUJO, ROMAIN ROCH, DIEGO LONDOÑO CORREA, YANICK PUNTER, CHARLOTTE BLEASE, NICOLE BARBARO, ADAM HUNT, PAWEL OSTASZEWSKI, NELLEKE BAK, GUY MADISON, GARY G HELLMANN, SAIMA AFZAL, ADRIAN JAEGGI, PAULO TOLENTINO, JOÃO BARBOSA, JULIAN PRICE, EDWARD HALL, HEDIN BRØNNER, DOUGLAS FRY, FRANCA BORTOLOTTI, GABRIEL PONS CORTÈS, URSULA LITZCKE, SCOTT, ZACHARY FISH, TIM DUFFY, SUNNY SMITH, JON WISMAN, WILLIAM BUCKNER, PAUL-GEORGE ARNAUD, LUKE GLOWACKI, GEORGIOS THEOPHANOUS, CHRIS WILLIAMSON, PETER WOLOSZYN, DAVID WILLIAMS, DIOGO COSTA, ALEX CHAU, AMAURI MARTÍNEZ, CORALIE CHEVALLIER, BANGALORE ATHEISTS, LARRY D. They reflect on their own experiences of creative nihilism, the creeping sense that no creative act really matters in the grand scheme of things, and how they've worked to overcome the detachment that can stem from that feeling. What starts as a discussion about social media and the challenges of sharing work evolves into an exploration of purpose, authenticity, and how to reframe the act of creating. From letting go of perfectionism to finding joy in absurdity, Seth and Aaron remind us that the antidote to the despair of meaninglessness is to make your own meaning, however small or silly it may seem.Expect to Learn:- How meaninglessness can be an opportunity to create your own purpose.- How to get to a place where you don't feel like you're "ego sharing" your work- To combat nihilism by experimenting with absurd or whimsical ideas.- How to view "sharing your work" as the final stage in the creative process.- To reconnect with people when you're detached and struggling to relate.Sponsor:Thanks to WhiteWall for being our lead sponsor this episode! You might think you own the things in your life, but the truth is, you don't. Everything—your money, your relationships, even your skills—needs constant investment to keep. If you stop "paying the rent," it's gone. In this episode, I'll break down what that really means and why nothing is ever truly yours. Show Notes: [03:31]#1 Anything you have to continually pay in order to keep it is not yours. [07:03]#2 Your physical body is not yours. [16:08]#3 Your mind and your way of thinking is rented. Trump wants us to believe that nothing matters, so we'll brush off all his corruption and grifting as though everybody does it. That's what aspiring authoritarians always do, including the guy who didn't place his hand on a Bible when he was sworn in today. Meanwhile, Trump just launched probably the biggest scam in the history of the presidency with his memecoin—ordinary people will lose real money, nothing like the small-ball amounts he scoops up with his shoes, mugs, and digital baseball cards. Plus, Biden's pardons, Trump's Day One executive orders, and seizing the means of content production with TikTok. Today we discuss the philosophical themes of the book Demons by Fyodor Dostoevsky. John is joined by his pal Tim Miller—OG Never Trumper and host of The Bulwark Podcast—for an extended therapy session a week out from the start of Donald Trump's second term. Tim explains why he finds it impossible to care about Trump non-sentence sentencing or the impending release of Special Counsel Jack Smith's report on Trump's role in January 6; his take on the collective tongue bath being given 45/47 by the tech billionaire class; and the long-run political implications of the face-off between Steve Bannon and Elon Musk. Tim also describes his strategy for combating his impulses towards nihilism in the face of what Trump 2.0 signifies and may hold in store: from hitting Tipitina's and gorging himself on crawfish to trekking to the UK to see Oasis reunite (hopefully!) this summer.
