Was, wenn Trump Iran angreift? Mit Azadeh Zamirirad

“Help is on its way”, das hatte US-Präsident Donald Trump im Januar bei Truth Social gepostet. In this episode, U.S. equity portfolio manager Grayson Witcher explores what it means to invest exclusively in American businesses at a time when the U.S. is becoming more short‑term, more transactional, and more central to global change. He contrasts a shifting U.S. "extraction" mindset with China's longer-term industrial strategy and considers how that dynamic is reshaping globalization into a more regional, security-conscious world. The conversation then turns to portfolio implications: why the team has been reducing exposure to mature, highly penetrated software names facing intensifying competition and AI disruption, how the market's treatment of AI has evolved from hype to a more "show me the returns" phase, and where they see resilient opportunities. Highlights: How a more short-term, "extraction"-oriented U.S. policy stance—via tariffs, reshoring, and industrial policy—is altering incentives for companies and trading partners. The evolving nature of software moats in an AI world, including higher competitive intensity, mature end markets, and why some long-term winners' valuations may no longer be justified. The market's transition from rewarding any AI narrative to demanding clearer evidence of economic returns on massive cloud and data-center capital spending. A deliberate tilt toward businesses positioned for a more regionalized, security-focused world order, including nuclear, defense, and automation suppliers with multiple ways to win. The importance of remaining bottom-up and valuation-driven while acknowledging regime change—using portfolio construction to manage uncertainty rather than making binary macro bets.   Host: Andrew Johnson, CFA Institutional Portfolio Manager   Guest: Grayson Witcher, CFA, AB Portfolio Manager   This episode is available for download anywhere you get your podcasts.

I grew up in Iowa where Mardi Gras wasn't really a thing. Then I moved to Baton Rouge for my PhD at LSU—and everything changed. In this episode I'm connecting my love of Mardi Gras, my research on the carnival, and our February theme of TRUST in the most delightfully nerdy way possible. Here's the question: What if chaos is actually a SIGN of trust? Here's what we're covering: Why carnival only works where there is trust (structured freedom not rigid control) What masks reveal about where safety hides (and our modern version of the mask) Why humor is a trust barometer (when teams can't laugh together, fear has entered the room) How controlled chaos builds communal trust (collective ridiculousness = collective vulnerability) The dangerous side: when play turns violent and trust breaks completely The 4 Trust Lessons from Carnival: 1. Trust requires structured freedom. Medieval carnival flipped the social order—servants mocked nobles, priests were parodied. But everyone knew when it started and ended. Trust isn't built through constant control. It's built when people know there's space for expression without the system collapsing. 2. Masks reveal where safety hides. When social risk disappears, honesty increases. Think about it: a sarcastic joke hiding real resentment. "Just kidding" as cover for actual truth. If someone only feels safe telling you the truth through humor—what does that tell you about trust? 3. Humor is a trust barometer. Regimes that lose their sense of humor become fragile. Relationships that can't tease each other anymore signal something is off. Can your team challenge you without fear? Can you and your partner tease each other without defensiveness? If not, trust might be low. 4. Controlled chaos builds communal trust. Everyone looks foolish TOGETHER. This lowers status anxiety and builds connection. You cannot build trust in permanent professional mode. Trust grows when people experience small disruptions together and recover together. The dangerous side: Trust can tolerate tension, critique, and inversion. But trust CANNOT survive betrayal. Carnival works because everyone knows the rules. Trust breaks when the rules change mid-game without consent. The big takeaway: Trust is not control. It's SAFE LOOSENESS. The confidence that we can step into chaos together and return without losing ourselves. Your challenge this week: Where can you create safe looseness in your life, your goals, or your relationships? They discuss his recent Foreign Affairs article, “The Weakness of the Strongmen: What Really Threatens Authoritarians?” Kotkin explores the frailty and resilience of authoritarian regimes through the lens of recent events in Venezuela and Iran, as well as the rise of Russia and China as authoritarian powers. They also discuss potential alternative future paths for Russia and turn to the current authoritarian temptation in the United States, along with the historic reasons for optimism that American democracy is robust enough to weather the depredations of the Trump administration.  Eliot's Latest in The Atlantic: https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/01/trump-greenland-europe-nato/685720/?gift=KGDC3VdV8jaCufvP3bRsPgGy7Ja9UMv_dSH1wXC41Rk&utm_ The Weakness of the Strongmen: What Really Threatens Authoritarians?: https://www.foreignaffairs.com/china/weakness-strongmen-stephen-kotkin The Five Futures of Russia: And How America Can Prepare for Whatever Comes Next: https://www.foreignaffairs.com/russian-federation/five-futures-russia-stephen-kotkin Stalin: Paradoxes of Power, 1878-1928: https://a.co/d/40CsvHC Stalin: Waiting for Hitler, 1929-1941: https://a.co/d/6IQt4nR Shield of the Republic is a Bulwark podcast co-sponsored by the Miller Center of Public Affairs at the University of Virginia.

HEADLINE: Strategic Vulnerabilities and the Path to a 456-Ship Fleet GUEST AUTHOR: Jerry HendrixSUMMARY: Hendrix identifies critical economic vulnerabilities in China and Russia, noting that both regimes rely heavily on sea lanes for energy and food, making them susceptible to naval interdiction. To maintain deterrence, he proposes a future fleet of 456 ships. This expansion relies on a pivot to unmanned surface vessels to control costs and the addition of 60 frigates for global presence. Hendrix also warns that the Navy must urgently replace retiring guided-missile submarines and expand the logistics force, as combatant ships cannot operate effectively without a robust train of supply vessels.1888 NAVAL GUN

This week on the Mark Levin Show, the Iranian people desire freedom amid starvation and lack of water under a fundamentalist Islamic regime that spreads terrorism, including attempts to assassinate President Trump, and must be destroyed to prevent further threats, as either terrorists are killed or they kill others. Eliminating this regime aligns with U.S. national security interests, benefiting allies by impacting China, Russia, and Venezuela, without aiming to install democracy but occasionally aiding others when it serves mutual goals, countering the mindset of inaction. The young people in Iran are freedom fighters battling a genocidal regime and abandoning them worsens global threats like those from communist China, ultimately harming the United States. Regimes such as Iran, China, Cuba, and North Korea are fascistic feudal systems masquerading as people's revolutions, fueled by fraudulent ideologies like Marxism, socialism, and communism. There's a noticeable absence of U.S. protests by Marxist-Islamists and woke neo-fascists in support of the thousands slaughtered in Iran, despite their professed concern for rights. Also, the war on ICE is a war on American citizens, driven by illegal aliens who claim rights to residency, welfare benefits, tax subsidies, and jobs while refusing to leave. There are highly organized, radical, violent Marxists and ethnic front groups who are obstructing their removal, which undermines borders and leads to children of illegals becoming citizens who vote Democrat. There are also avenues for civil action against individual perpetrators. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

On Tuesday's Mark Levin Show, the young people in Iran are freedom fighters battling a genocidal regime and abandoning them worsens global threats like those from communist China, ultimately harming the United States. Also, the Democrats have militarized their various constituent groups again, in support of the illegal alien stampede they created under the Biden regime, because they know that to break the immigration enforcement system is to change the country forever and to establish one-party Democrat Party control over our country for as far as the eye can see.  Illegal immigration and the importation of millions of people from all parts of the world who have no intention of assimilating into our country and who seek to impose their own cultures on the citizenry is already causing enormous havoc and societal unrest.  And the Democrat Party is all in.  It is the most unconscionable assault on our nation since the Confederate Democrats dragged our country into a civil war. The battles in our streets between ICE and the mobs are battles for the survival of our Republic.   Later, the 19-year-old who set fire Congregation Beth Israel referred to it as the "Synagogue of Satan"—an anti-Semitic phrase used by figures like Nick Fuentes and Candace Owens. People like Tucker Carlson, Steve Bannon, Megyn Kelly, and others use inflammatory language that incites violence against Jews. Afterward, the Supreme Court should know that Trump imposed 25% tariffs on countries doing business with Iran solely for national security and foreign policy reasons, not economic or tax purposes, and that such decisions belong to the President as Commander-in-Chief, not judges or bureaucrats. The Court needs to reverse the lower court rulings and avoid involvement because judicial interference would disrupt historical presidential actions, blur the power of the purse from executive authority, and create havoc in the economy, international trade, foreign policy, and national security through inconsistent rulings from egomaniacal lower court judges. The world is shifting — fast — and it’s not by accident. Today on Stinchfield, we break down the most aggressive and effective form of broad regime change the modern world has ever seen. Not through endless nation-building or ground wars, but through precision power. Under Donald Trump, America is reshaping the global chessboard using a three-pronged strategy: military deterrence, economic warfare, and unmistakable resolve. The result? For the first time in history, Venezuela, Iran, and Cuba all face simultaneous existential pressure. Their regimes are isolated, broke, destabilized — and running out of options. This isn’t accidental. It’s intentional. And the ripple effects are enormous. As these authoritarian regimes wobble, their chief lifeline is exposed — China. Beijing depends on these rogue states for leverage, resources, and strategic distraction. As they fall or fracture, China is quietly but severely weakened — economically, diplomatically, and militarily. This is how power is applied without apologizing. This is how wars are prevented, not provoked. And this is why the global order is changing right now. Today, we connect the dots the media refuses to connect — and explain why this moment may redefine global dominance for decades to come. Stinchfield. Send us a textThe news can feel like a storm of outrage, but there's a deeper current running beneath the headlines. We pull focus from domestic noise and trace the arcs shaping Venezuela and Iran—overnight power plays, decades of repression, and the uneasy dance between justice, asylum, and international complicity. Along the way we confront uncomfortable questions: What happens when the architects of violence seek refuge in the very places that once amplified their ascent? When governments shut down the internet, how do citizens keep telling the truth? We don't stop at geopolitics. We turn the lens toward the heart and ask how people of faith can respond without hardening into tribal blame. The answer isn't apathy or denial; it's a return to a steady center—salvation, deliverance, healing—and a practical posture of prayer that refuses to hate people even while hating the harm caused by sin. A scene from Luke 7 anchors the episode: Jesus meets a grieving mother at a city gate, interrupts death with compassion, and restores what was lost. That story becomes a model for how we speak, share, and act when nations shake—authority without arrogance, conviction without contempt, mercy stronger than mockery.Across these segments, we map the tension between censorship and witness, outrage and intercession, power and presence. We explore how spiritual authority grows from listening first and acting second, how daily prayer forms courage, and how hope can be more than a slogan when lives are on the line. If you're hungry for a perspective that takes world events seriously while keeping a clear, compassionate center, this conversation will ground you and send you forward with purpose. If this resonates, follow the show, share it with a friend who watches the headlines, and leave a review to help more listeners find thoughtful, faith-centered analysis.Support the show

THE COLLAPSE OF 1989 AND THE MODERN AUTHORITARIAN PIVOT Colleague Professor Sean McMeekin. In the final segment, McMeekin challenges the narrative that the 1989 collapse was solely a popular uprising. Instead, he argues it was a "top-down disintegration" caused by the withdrawal of Soviet force via the "Sinatra Doctrine" (letting satellites go their own way). Regimes fell because security forces mutinied or stood down, not merely because of protests. Regarding modern Russia, McMeekin notes that while Putin has jettisoned Lenin, he retains a nostalgia for Stalin as a "builder" of state power. The conversation concludes with a warning: while traditional communism relied on extreme violence, modern authoritarian regimes, particularly China, may now use advanced surveillance technology to achieve total control without the same level of overt bloodshed. Regimes falter when opposition media is strong. But America's legacy media has failed to live up to the dangers of the political environment and the authoritarianism of Trump's administration. We need stronger opposition media, making full-throated defenses of liberalism. But what does that look like?I'm joined today by Adam Gurri, founder and editor-in-chief of Liberal Currents, which is currently fundraising to take their indispensable publication to the next level. The Fall of Communism: Top-Down Collapse and the Legacy of Violence in Modern Russia Professor Sean McMeekin The final segment discusses the collapse of communist regimes in 1989, contending that these regimes generally did not fall because of a rising from the bottom. Instead, the collapse was largely top-down, driven by the disappearance of Soviet coercion or inside palace coups, such as the one that overthrew the Ceaușescus in Romania or the mutiny that lined the armed forces up behind Yeltsin in Russia. In modern Russia, there is a hybrid system that includes statism, control of media, and nostalgia for the Soviet period and Stalin's legacy as a "builder" and "conqueror," but it has jettisoned Lenin and full communism. The core thesis reaffirmed is that extreme violence is the predicate for the communist vision.
