It’s a Double-Doug-Sized episode for the return to the Battle of the Barbarians! Doug Michel from the Douglas & Dragons Podcast gives his personal brand of insight to Conan the Barbarian 49 (which is part of an adaption of the novel, “Kothar and the Conjurer’s Curse” by Gardner F. Fox.)...
In this week's Middle of Culture, we dive deep into our usual blend of media obsession and existential humor — from the strange delights of villainess light novels and the chaos of gacha games to Tron Ares, which Eden declares “not a good movie… but maybe the best Tron movie.” Peter shares his thoughts on new music from Conjurer and Author & Punisher, reviews Wind and Truth with mixed feelings, and outlines a possible new nonfiction project exploring the moral dehumanization of healthcare. We close by revisiting the bizarre early UK Transformers comics — where Optimus is kind of a jerk, Starscream becomes the original “catty traitor,” and Brawn looks like he escaped a Dollar Tree toy aisle.Episode Notes:Opening Banter:Eden introduces herself as “so eeppy,” prompting Peter to admit defeat against internet slang. The two reflect on “functional depression,” aging, and surviving the current “hellscape.Eden's Media Fixation:Revisits I'm in Love with the Villainess and praises it as one of the best isekai series ever.Explains Prison Life is Easy for a Villainess, a meta comedy about a villainess treating dungeon time as a spa retreat.Attends a PowerPoint Party and presents “Villainess as Protagonist: A Meta-Analysis of Current Media Trends.”Gacha Game Roundup:Stella Sora: “What if Hades was slower and shittier?” Deleted after 45 minutes.Chaos Zero Nightmare: Required two launchers — instant nope.Duet Night Abyss: Promising Warframe-style action without predatory gacha.Tron Ares Review:Eden: “Not a good movie… but maybe the best Tron movie.”Praises its Nine Inch Nails soundtrack and stunning action; mocks Jared Leto's acting.Peter admits he'd watch all three Tron films once they're streaming.Peter's Media Corner:Music: Revisits Testament's Parabellum, discovers Author & Punisher, and praises Conjurer's Unself.Reading: Finishes Wind and Truth, critiques Sanderson's editing, starts Murder Your Employer by Rupert Holmes, and begins Work Won't Love You Back by Sarah Jaffe.Discusses a new nonfiction concept: “Connecting to Purpose: The Moral Dehumanization of Healthcare in America.”Ideological Detour:Eden: “If you're not the owner, you're being exploited.”Peter admits he's “becoming radicalized.”Transformers (UK Comics):Recap of the lost “Man of Iron” episode and this week's The Enemy Within.Discovery: This is possibly where “catty, traitorous Starscream” was born.Braun's design roasted as “the Dollar Tree Transformer.”Optimus Prime called “a dick” for sending Brawn and Starscream into gladiator combat.Praise for Ravage and nostalgia for our childhood toys.Closing:Eden confesses to spending $100 on the new Missing Link R.C. figure — “worth every penny.”Episode ends with a reminder to subscribe, share, and leave a review.
Conjurer has undergone significant evolution since their debut album in 2018, with their second album in 2022 earning them recognition as one of the UK's most exciting metal bands. Despite their success, they focus on creating heavy music for enjoyment, avoiding politics in favor of showcasing musical skill. Their latest album, *Unself*, reflects personal and collective growth, particularly for vocalist/guitarist Dani Nightingale, who navigates new self-discoveries and societal challenges. *Unself* captures personal and societal themes, especially concerning identity and belonging, set against a backdrop of societal issues. The album balances intense post-metal sounds with thoughtful use of space, enhancing its impact. Strong band camaraderie and producer Joe Clayton's guidance aided in creating a more organic and collaborative songwriting process.Passionate about metal?
Conjurer, one of the UK's most vital and uncompromising metal bands, return with their third album 'Unself', out 24th October via Nuclear Blast Records. A bright and brilliant showcase of their evolution, one that comes via personal upheaval. Notably, the voyage of discovery unfurling for vocalist/guitarist Dani Nightingale. Diagnosed with autism at age 31, their long-held view of self, and perception of their place in the world began to unravel. Unself documents much of the piecing back together around the diagnosis, alongside the realisation they were non-binary. It's darker, more vulnerable and more purposeful, a raw exploration of belonging and disconnection against a collapsing modern world. This is just one aspect of this interview that we explore with Dani in this interview. As well as looking at the journey of Conjurer to this point, their natural evolution from Mire (2018) through to Páthos (2022), why this needed to happen, their upcoming headline UK tour, and so much more. British metal outfit Conjurer have continued to defy expectations since the release of their debut album, Mire, in 2018. Essentially an experimental metal band, Conjurer has drawn on elements of sludge, death, doom and post metal, never once allowing themselves to be defined by any one sound or genre. While award nominations and accolades accumulated with each piece of new music, Conjurer retained their one simple mission: to make heavy music and have fun while doing so. Preferring to use their spotlight to showcase technicality and musicality rather than concentrating on politics or opinions, Conjurer have always lived in the moment and embraced everything that came their way.Their upcoming third album Unself (October 24, Nuclear Blast Records) sees Conjurer once more expanding their sonic palate, but this time the whole album is grounded by a common theme or thread that sees the band producing their most personal album to date. Unself is a more intense, more personal voyage of discovery unfurling for vocalist/guitarist Dani Nightingale, who was diagnosed with autism at age 31. With that prognosis, Conjurer's long-held view of self and perception of their place in the world began to unravel. Unself documents much of the piecing back together around the diagnosis, alongside the realisation that they were non-binary.With the release date looming large, HEAVY took the time to chat with guitarist/vocalist Brady Deeprose to dive deeper. We start by asking if the band are feeling confident about the reaction for the new album."I think it's funny because with all of our previous releases, we've not really cared about the reception," he smiled. "It has been a very specific point that we make this music for the four of us. We put it out there, and if people like it, that is wonderful. And if they don't, then that's also fine. We can't control that. However, on this album, I feel like we've put so much more of ourselves into it than ever before. It feels so much more personal and so much more emotionally vulnerable, that while, yes, if people don't like it, that's not something I can control, but I do really hope that people connect with it in the way that I have. I love this album, it really means a lot to me, and I hope that it kind of scratches that itch for at least some of the people that listen to it."In the full interview, Brady talks more about Unself, highlighting its departure from previous works and a focus on emotional vulnerability and personal investment. He described the recording process as collaborative and low-pressure, contrasting it with the challenges faced during their last album, Pathos. Brady explained how the band aims for a more organic sound on Unself, with tracks that defy traditional genre boundaries, reflecting their artistic evolution. We spoke about the opening tune, Unself, and why it was chosen as first cab off the rank, as well as the closing track, The World Is Not My Home, which is an adaptation of a century-old gospel song, and the thought process behind both. Last year's Australian tour was brought up, along with whispers about a return visit next year and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.
Antelman both deconstructs the body and then reassembles it, not just as a way of imagining a deeper connection with nature, but also as a way of expressing how malleable the very idea of it has become. In place of a techno-utopianism, in which the steady advance of technology is uniformly celebrated, Antelman expresses an atavistic position instead, one which delights in the complexity of nature rather than seeking to explain or instrumentalize it. Her work reminds us that what is mysterious in the world often connects us to what is mystical in it as well. Born 1971 in Athens, Greece, Maria Antelman received her MFA in New Genres from Columbia University and a BA in Art History from the Complutense University, Madrid. Her work has exhibited internationally, including at the Bemis Center of Contemporary Art, Omaha, NE; Pioneer Works, New York; Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art, Thessaloniki; Visual Arts Center at the University of Texas, Austin; Botanical Garden I&A Diomidos, Athens; National Museum of Contemporary Art, Athens; Onassis Cultural Centre, Athens; Benaki Museum, Athens; Centro Nacional de Arte Contemporaneo, Cerillos, Chile and Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco. Antelman's work was included in Companion Pieces: New Photography 2020 at the Museum of Modern Art, New York. She has been the recipient of grants from the Onassis Foundation USA, as well as the National Museum of Contemporary Art and the J.F. Costopoulos Foundation, Athens. Antelman has taken part in artist residences including Silver Art Projects, Pioneer Works and the International Studio & Curatorial Program in New York. Antelman currently lives and works in Athens.

I have always loved art. I began my college career as an artist before moving to journalism, but my fascination has always remained with the visual arts. I love going to museums and when something attracts my attention, I often do deep research into the subject until I have reached satisfaction. One such personal pursuit has been my longtime passion for studying “The Juggler” (aka “The Conjurer”) by Hieronymus Bosch. I have given lectures on this painting to magicians and to museum docents. So imagine my great thrill to meet and to have this meaningful conversation with Dr. Steffen Taut from Dresden who is an expert in ancient magic art. Thanks to an introduction by Richard Hatch at the recent Magic Collectors Expo, we sat down to record a scholarly talk about our mutual passion and more. This should be like listening to a college professor after class talking with one of his students. I know you will learn a lot from this week's episode and I guarantee you'll enjoy it, or you get your money back! View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize During the first half of our conversation, Dr. Taut talks about Djedi, magician to Pharaoh Khufu (Cheops), as well as some of the “magic” he created (like severing and restoring the head of a bull, and switching heads between a duck and a chicken), plus how some of the court magicians were less than ethical in their conduct. Dr. Taut also goes into some detail about the Westcar Papyrus which has only been discovered some 200 years ago but tells us so much about Egyptian magic in Pharaoh's courts. The second part of our chat goes into the 1502 painting by Hieronymus Bosch known to us today as “The Conjurer.” There is a lot of symbolism in this painting and an interesting history of what was going on with the Church at the time that led to Bosch creating this painting. Eric Newman speaks with Phillip B. Williams about his debut novel, Ours. A surrealist epic largely set in the American midwest both pre- and post-emancipation, the book tells the story of Saint, a conjure woman who uses her supernatural powers to liberate slaves and keep them safe in a magically secluded town near St. Louis. But as Saint's magic begins to falter and newcomers appear in the town, the residents chafe at her power over them, eager for a freedom, identity, and community forged on their own terms. In the interview, Williams discusses his novel's blend of diasporic traditions and spirituality, how his characters repair themselves and each other, and what it means to read–and write–with love. Also, Lucy Sante, author of I Heard Her Call My Name: A Memoir of Transition, returns to recommend April Ashley's Odyssey by Duncan Fallowell and April Ashley.
