Christopher Fennell replied to my Re: Happy St Patrick's Month Feedback Request:  "Hi Marc, I love your podcast! I'm celebrating the early part of St. Patrick's month by volunteering in the Iditarod race in Alaska. I'll be singing Celtic tunes while taking care of the huskies running for 1,049 frozen miles from Anchorage to Nome. I have dual citizenship with the Republic, as my grandparents immigrated from Roscommon, Dublin, and Limerick. Perhaps I can start a sled - dog team representing the Republic somewhere in the future. Best wishes," Ben Doran replied to my feedback request: "Hello Marc; The weather here in Wisconsin today definitely inspires kilt wear. And weather/whether or not it is nearly this nice on St. Patrick's Day weekend, I'll be kilting it up. And singing with the band Ar Ais Aris (a - rash a - reesh)("Back Again") on Saturday in Berwyn, Il; then Sunday, to Galena, Il; then finish up with our two usual gigs for retirement communities in Rockton, Il and Beloit, WI on Monday. I will (yep) probably color my beard in orange and green for Monday. I think among the many new sounds/new music that I've heard from your podcasts, it would be the band, Larkin, that has my fancy (this week, anyway). No, I don't consider myself fickle, just distracted.  Slainte, Marc!!" woodland folk emailed a photo: "heading to the wood for a fire and a practice, can listen then my friend... Attached is a picture,me and another friend who plays a Welsh harp, stopped to play a little on the river brue ...." Nathanael Stottlemyer emailed: "We're losing Good Celtic Music Hi Marc, It was last year that I started listening to your podcast, and like a mad man I started your podcast at the very beginning. I'm now at the year 2016 and I've loved every episode. There is just one problem. When I look up the bands that I loved and that I want to purchase their music, they're gone. There's no website, no Spotify, no YouTube, sometimes I can't even find their CD's used! And it's a shame, because they're good songs and sometimes, take Young Hunting by Serious Kitchen (Which was in your best of the year podcasts more than once) it's the only Celtic rendition of the song on the internet. I managed to buy the last Tig! Album off the internet, but it's looking bad for some of my other favorites. We're losing years of Celtic music, and it's a shame, especially since I know that the members of Serious Kitchen and others are still around. I don't suppose I'm missing a way to buy these albums. I really hope I am. I don't suppose you could use your amazing Celtfather connections and reach out to some of the people of these bands and see if they'd put on Bandcamp? Or perhaps a huge "Best of the Irish and Celtic Music Podcast" album with some of these lost treasures? They're some of the best music I've heard. Thanks, Nathanael"

Patrick Rieger sent Some More Irish Pictures: "Hello Marc, A few more photos to share. First up, a few of Terry Griffith, the last few times he was on a stage with an in - person audience at Mullaney's Harp and Fiddle. One is from the 2020 fundraiser for the Pittsburgh Saint Patrick's Day Parade on February 13, 2020, and another is from his gig on February 28, 2020. Within a few weeks, the words Covid and Coronavirus quickly became part of our daily vocabulary, and the shows came to an end for a couple of years. On June 4, 2022, we had a retirement party for Terry. The best part of the night is when he strapped on a guitar and led the packed pub in A Health to the Company. There were tears and cheers for him throughout the evening, but most came during that special song. The last photo is from tonight, January 27, 2024. John McCann on acoustic guitar and Hamish on percussion packed the Harp & Fiddle. Lots of great music and an interactive audience.”

I always find it interesting to see which artists I feature the most on the podcast in a given year. Sometimes these artists crossover the songs and tunes on the Celtic Top 20. It's fascinating to see. Go read the article on our Patreon. Which you can follow and get blogs like this for free. Our Make100 Kickstarter campaign is FULLY FUNDED! We funded 100 Celtic Pins, 100 Celtic CDs and 100 Celtic shirts as part of the campaign. One of the things I did not plan for was Stretch Goals. It took me a moment, but I came up with one that makes me very happy–an exclusive compilation album. Here's how it works. If we can raise $6000, then I will put together a bonus compilation album. Everyone who supports the campaign at $25+ will get a copy. I'll also print 100 physical copies of the album on CD. The album will feature 12+ songs and tunes from our Highlight Reels. Basically, I'm gonna contact bands and see if I can license enough tracks for a bonus album. I'll start with the Celtic Top 20. If I can get enough tracks, I'll stop there. If I can't then I will dig into our next most - popular Highlight Reels. Go check out our Kickstarter right now. THANK YOU PATRONS OF THE PODCAST! You are amazing. Appreciate everything that you do, thanks for continuing to bring us this great music" Ben Q emailed: "Hi Marc, Huge fan with a fun story for you from today: I was changing my daughter's diaper and singing a little song, in this case "The Parting Glass," to keep us both entertained. A lot of the time she will say “Daddy, stop singing!” which hurts a little but is totally fine, ha ha. But today she said “Dad I want you to sing ‘Down by yon green bushes!'” That's the first line of a song that I actually learned maybe two years ago from Niamh Parsons's appearance on your podcast, “Bonnie Woodhall,” and Niamh told a great story to go with it as well, about trying over multiple late - night sessions with her fellow musicians to remember the whole thing. I loved that song as well as her story, and I sing that a lot around my house, but  -  me not sounding much like Niamh when I sing  -  I don't get a lot of requests around here exactly, and it really tickled me that my kid requested that one. Anyway, please keep up the good work Marc, and if it's not too late to say so, a very happy New Year to you." Patrick Rieger sent a picture and asked about photo sizes for the podcast: "Thank you. I can set the width at 1200 pixels. The photos are already at 72dpi. Here is a photo of The Craic Show on September 3, 2023, during the opening gate act of the Pittsburgh Renaissance Festival. The Donegal Doggs can be seen seated on the left waiting their turn. I'll keep the photos coming. We'll be attending Great Lakes, Pittsburgh, and Ohio again this year. We planned the dates to attend Ohio in 2024 during Pub SIng this last year."

My name is Kat, I'm an Aussie and I was travelling through Peru for the month of July. You mentioned in a recent episode to send in travel pictures, so here are a few happy snaps from my recent wanderings. I've played the flute for many years, with my favourite type of music to play being anything Celtic. However, while in the city of Cusco, I met a Peruvian flute maker and fell in love with the sound of the low Andean meditation flute. I'm already thinking of creative ways I can blend the Andean flute with a Celtic sound. I'd be open to any suggestions! I've attached a photo of me playing the Andean flute at Laguna Churup, it was quite a hike to get there but well worth the view. Aside from that, I get very badly motion sick on buses and unfortunately this is the main mode of transport to get around Peru. I found that zoning out by listening to the Irish and Celtic Music Podcast was incredibly helpful on long haul bus rides, so thank you for helping me to prevent motion sickness while travelling! I can't wait to hear where your next Celtic Invasion takes you. Happy travels,"   Patrick Rieger emailed photos: "Hello Marc, My family and I went to three faires this year, and I wanted to share some photos of the musicians. First up are photos from the Great Lakes Medieval Faire. Then the Pittsburgh Renaissance Festival. And finally, the Ohio Renaissance festival. I'll need to spread them out over two or three emails because of attachment size limits."   WOODLAND FOLK sent some Fair Winter Morning photos:

Growing up in Dundalk, Ireland, Finnian has carefully honed his songwriting slowly and with care. Since 2015 His music is honest, concise and textured in a way that is grounded and speaks to his inner conviction. Never afraid to draw on his influences and using the medium of live performance in a studio context, Finnian's nods to his musical past have been hailed as refreshing in a climate that has gradually moved away from such a perspective. His first album Under the Influence garnered strong reviews on its release in the summer of 2020 and his momentum has been hugely impressive. His work is something that speaks to experience rather than aspiration, with an attention to detail that comes from living and a willingness to evolve through his introspective songwriting. Backed by some of the finest local musicians, Finnian's live shows have been praised as vibrant representations of his music while also offering the audience a window into his continued musical journey.  His beginnings as a folk based songwriter have been consistently evolving. From humble beginnings on the open mic circuit, to now being backed with real musical muscle, his live experience has always been authentic and a true representation of who he is, where he has come from and most importantly, where he is going next.Finnian is also a member of the folk group Ceithre Cinn which consists of fellow songwriters Ciaran Lavery, Suzanne Savage and Matt McGinn.

The First Lady of Country Music, Loretta Lynn, passed away earlier this week leaving behind a legacy of country music.  Lynn, of Scot-Irish decent, was the first woman singer-songwriter in Country music, breaking down barriers for women of country music around the world.  Lynn wrote about heartache, relationships, hardships and life in "Butcher Holler", her home town.  Today, we honor the Queen of Country Music along with music from Clare Dillon, Matt McGinn & Aoife Scott, Iona Fyfe, Breahbach, Brenda Castles, Leigh Bruckerville, Bonfire Radicals, Picture This, Brian Deady, Ronan Keating, and Lisa Lambe.  It's all right here on Windy City Irish Radio.  Tune in each and every Sunday at 12:00 noon on globalirishradio.com or in WNDZ 750AM Chicago or on our website at windycityirishradio.com.

All Heart with Paul Cardall

Recently stepping off the stage as a host for the season finale of Canada's Got Talent, award-winning artist Lindsay Ell joins All Heart with Paul Cardall to discuss her journey leading up to CMA nominations, a Gold record, head-lining her first concert tour, and the recent release of a her hit single, “Right On Time.” Lindsay, whose toured with Keith Urban, Brad Paisely, and Sugarland is putting a voice to the pressure she feels as a career-focused woman in her 30s, “Right On Time” is an anthem for anyone who has felt pressured to be something or someone they aren't, while working on timelines determined by societal norms. ABOUT LINDSAY“I've learned to care a little less about what everybody thinks,” says singer/songwriter/guitarist Lindsay Ell. “Following my gut instinct, truly saying what I want to say—that's the magic, the elements that make you relatable and real. Before, I was worrying about writing for radio, for fans, but now this is what I know, this is my journey. And the more honest I get, the more effective it is.”With her new album, heart theory, Ell does just that, weaving the story of her journey of the heart in her own voice using her arsenal of tools as a musician and artist to give each song the sonic backdrop it deserves. “Theory is the science of music, heart theory is the science of a heart,” says Ell.The tracks take the listener along the path of the seven stages of grief: shock, denial, anger, bargaining, depression, testing and acceptance. “If my last record was called The Project, this one could be called the process.” From the shock-to-the-heart felt in the groovy opening track “Hits me” to the sing-along-at-the-top-of-your-lungs acceptance of the closing track “ReadY to love,” Ell invites you to experience her journey.Produced by the legendary Dann Huff, heart theory maintains a sonic depth and auditory aura while still conveying the emotional rawness and storytelling that highlights Ell's growth since her debut album on Stoney Creek Records, The Project, which debuted at No. 1 on the Country Album Sales Chart and was named Billboard's “Best Country Album of 2017.” That album spawned her first Top 20 hit in the US, as well as her first No.1 on the Canadian Country radio charts – making her the first female artist to top that chart in 10 years. Most recently, she scored her first No. 1 with “What Happens in a Small Town,” her duet with Brantley Gilbert – another milestone moment making her the first Canadian artist to hit No. 1 in the US since Emerson Drive's “Moments” in 2007, and the first Canadian woman to reach the top of the charts since Terri Clark with “I Just Wanna Be Mad” in 2003.Over the past 3 years, Ell has shared the stage with some of the biggest acts in the world touring with Keith Urban, Brad Paisley, and Sugarland.  She has more than held her own in moments alongside such artists as Mellissa Etheridge, Billy Ray Cyrus, Robert Randolph, Billy Gibbons and other legends. She has made multiple appearances on the CMA Awards stage including playing with Carrie Underwood and performing with distinguished country group, Little Big Town, alongside other powerhouse female artists in one the biggest moments of the 2019 CMA Awards where she was also nominated for Musical Event of the Year. Ell's nominations do not stop there, she is a 2x 2020 ACM nominee for New Female Artist of the Year and Music Event of the Year.Concurrently though, Ell was grappling with the real-life complexities that come with growing up, even as a rising star. “The past couple of years, I've been through a lot,” she says. “A public break-up took me through all of the stages of heartbreak, I turned 30, I had a health scare and countless other hurdles. And I came out the other side as a full human. There are moments when life just smacks you in the face and you need to do the work of figuring out what that means, how it changed you, and how to take full control of your life.”Ell points to several of the new songs as examples of her evolution and sense of maturity. “There's a song called ‘make you' that's about a trauma that happened to me as a little girl, something I have never publicly talked about,” she says. “Holding pieces of our story back means missing out on the opportunity to feel inspired, changed, drawn to make a difference. I got into this business to change people, to make them feel something. So, it was important to me to get really honest and say that all of us have skeletons in the closet, but those things make us who we are.”With a chorus and guitar lines that soar “wAnt me back” is glowing with self-appreciation and tints of anger. “I love watching people step into their own power,” says Ell. “It is one of the most inspiring moments to watch someone finally see their full potential.” With this sentiment, Ell co-wrote this mid-tempo track with hit-maker Kane Brown along with Matt McGinn and Lindsay Rimes. Preaching confidence and that there is no other you, Ell hopes to inspire others to free themselves of the shackles that no longer serve them well.Lauded by Forbes magazine as “one of the most exciting and talented young artists in Country music,” the Calgary native learned to play guitar while traveling with her father to Country-Bluegrass camps as a young girl. Ell was championed by Randy Bachman (of Bachman Turner Overdrive and The Guess Who), who discovered her at the age of 13, and was soon touring alongside the likes of Luke Bryan and Buddy Guy.While Ell has earned special recognition for her blistering guitar playing, she notes that she doesn't want to be defined by any one dimension of her work. She says, “I don't want to be known as just a guitar player. My favorite artists, like John Mayer and Keith Urban, are great players, but that's not the only thing you think of. I write, sing, produce and think all the pieces of the puzzle come together to make an artist's story unique, to paint the full picture. Yes, this is a huge guitar record, but that's not what I want be the first thing that rings the bell when you listen.”A major part of Ell's success has come from her dedicated exposure to an international audience. She has performed on her own tour, at the C2C Festival, opening tours for stars in their home territories, and as part of the CMA's “Introducing Nashville” series in Europe and Asia (at one point playing in eight different countries in 32 days).“I've loved doing so much international travel.” she says. “I always wanted to build my career beyond the borders of North America, so it's incredible to go to New Zealand, Japan, Germany, places where they're trying to figure out what I'm saying, but they're so into it. They listen to the catalog, learn the songs, come to the show ready for the experience—they're the perfect audience, they care so much.”As Lindsay Ell gears up for a new album and continues to tour around the globe, she embraces this next chapter of her career. “Artists are always scared of the infamous sophomore album,” she says, “but I'm so excited. I've done the work, I've found the right team, and I'm coming at it from a place of more strength and more honesty. I'm ready to do this, so bring it on.”Keep up will all Lindsay Ell on her socials:Instagram Facebook | Twitter | TikTok | YouTube

The Vinyl Supper with Foy Vance

In the fourth episode of The Vinyl Supper, guest Chrissy Metz opens with a bang, asking Foy: “Is that your real name?” (It is.) And from that, the two are chatting like old friends. The star of This is Us and Breakthrough gets deep with Foy over the danger of ‘shoulda coulda woulda's' and finding God within music. She talks working with Mandy Moore and how the show helped her get started in music: “If my character does it, why can't I?” Chrissy calls music her first love, and Foy gets at the heartwarming story of how she made that love into a dream come true. Before quarantine, Chrissy was real busy: performing “I'm Standing with You” at the Oscars, and she recently co-wrote her newest song “Actress” with Nicolette Hayford, Matt McGinn, and Nathan Spicer. From quarantine in Nashville, Chrissy is now writing and recording her debut country music album. In the meantime, follow up with Chrissy by reading her memoir This Is Me, which debuted on the NYT bestseller list at #1, or watch out every month for her Chrissy's Most Loved Picks in conjunction with Walmart.
