Overcoming Imposter Syndrome with the Enneagram It’s a new week which means it is time for another episode of EnneaTalk Tuesday. This week I delve into the topic of Imposter Syndrome, what it looks like, how it can impact us, and how it shows up and presents itself for every type on the Enneagram. Listen to this episode for tips and tricks to navigate out of imposter syndrome, how to recognize when you have fallen into it, and exactly how to lean into your gifts and trust yourself to lead the life and find the success you deserve. What is Imposter Syndrome? I start off this episode offering a few definitions of imposter syndrome, how it can show up if you feel like you don’t belong in a situation or that you are not qualified. I talk about how it can show up in relationships, business, friendships, and can lead to self-sabotage and self-fulfilling prophecies. Using the Enneagram to lean into your gifts I discuss how every single person can battle with Imposter Syndrome, how as we continue to level up and personally develop there will always be some level of fear, insecurity, and doubt. I offer tips and tricks for each type on how to handle and lean into your gifts to get out of the cycle and discuss how each type’s core desires and fears play a role in how this syndrome impacts each one. I give examples of how the Enneagram can be used to recognize your true value and gifts and can be your greatest tool in pulling yourself out of self-doubt and into your true calling.Quotes:2:31As we are leveling up and personal developing the crap out of ourselves, just know..new levels, new devils.3:11If you continue to live in that impostor syndrome and stay stuck in it and don't take action, you’re going to be stuck in fear forever.5:13I don’t want you for one more day to be robbed of joy, success, abundance, love, not for one more minute. 5:45If we only have the awareness and then just take corrective action, the chances of it being sustainable or you know to go the distance usually doesn't last very long.8:44When 2’s really can build that muscle, they really are able to step into that healthy 4 part of them.10:16The more that you allow yourself to feel your way through, the less you’re going to be chasing the unattainable.11:57The basic desire for the enneagram type 5 is to be competent.14:04If you are a 6 you know that can talk your way out of, you know shining your light on the world.14:55The 7’s are the masters at you know just going to the next thing, going to the next thing and they don't take their time to feel stuff.17:028's are world class leaders, and to be a world class leader, you need support and I know as an 8 that's one of our scariest things...but it’s important.

I love listening to podcasts and over the past few years, mentions of the Enneagram personality test has popped up over and over again. Last Fall, I decided to explore it further and happened upon a podcast interviewing Ian Cron. I was intrigued. The podcast shared how valuable knowing your team’s personality profile and how it can help the team as they interact with each other. Being the team enthusiast that I am, I sent all of Team Sparkle a link to take the Enneagram Test with the expectations that we would share our results at our Team Retreat. We did and it was really fun BUT…as I explored the Enneagram a bit more, through Ian Cron’s book The Road Back to You: An Enneagram Journey to Self-Discovery, I felt a sense of awakening that I never experienced before. And that’s why I decided to make The Road Back to You, the Deep Space Sparkle’s book pick for Spring 2019. I can’t wait for you to listen to how this book impacted how I think about myself and the work I do to understand myself better but also how it has helped improve how I interact with my team and my loved ones. So What Exactly is the Enneagram? It's basically a personality test on how people are wired, both positively and negatively. Results are surprisingly accurate. The Enneagram isn’t just a personality inventory like Myers-Briggs. It’s a powerful tool for personal and spiritual growth that has many layers. The Enneagram is based on 9 personality types, but it's more than just the numbers. It is structured to determine not only your basic personality type (we are all born with a dominant type) but also factors in how as children we adapt to this personality type. There are many nuances to the Enneagram, like how healthy you are in your dominant personality trait or number and how your Wing factors in. Here are the 9 types: 1  The Perfectionist is principled, purposeful, self-controlled, and a perfectionist. 2 The Helper is generous, demonstrative, people-pleasing, and possessive. 3 The Performer  is adaptable, excelling, driven, and image-conscious 4 The Romantic is expressive, dramatic, self-absorbed, and temperamental. 5 The Investigator is perceptive, innovative, secretive, and isolated. 6 The Loyalist is engaging, responsible, anxious, and suspicious. 7 The Enthusiast is spontaneous, versatile, acquisitive, and scattered. 8 The Challenger is self-confident, decisive, willful, and confrontational. 9 The Peacemaker is receptive, reassuring, complacent, and resigned. Here are a few basic assumptions of the Enneagram: 1. People do not change from one basic personality type to another. 2. The descriptions of the personality types are universal and apply equally to males and females, since no type is inherently masculine or feminine. 3. Not everything in the description of your basic type will apply to you all the time because you fluctuate constantly among the healthy, average, and unhealthy traits that make up your personality type. 4. The Enneagram uses numbers to designate each of the types because numbers are value neutral— they imply the whole range of attitudes and behaviors of each type without specifying anything either positive or negative. 5. The numerical ranking of the types is not significant. A larger number is no better than a smaller number; it is not better to be a Nine than a Two because nine is a bigger number. 6. No type is inherently better or worse than any other. The last is the most important factor to understand and overcome…when I tested using the Rheti, I initially didn’t like my number…. WHAT YOU'LL LEARN IN THIS EPISODE: - What is the Enneagram and how it can serve you personally and professionally - What the nine personality types are - How my Enneagram number shaped how I perceived myself in a new way - Why taking the test not only helps you, but helps you see see others in a different light LISTEN TO THE SHOW

We’re going to introduce another tool or map called the Enneagram that is a beautiful complement to The Spiral Dynamics model. The reason we are layering the Enneagram into the conversation is, while we may be experiencing life from the same collective world-view, such as a Traditional or Post-Modern, our own unique motivations and reactions will come into play especially when we encounter change. What is the Enneagram? It is a Map of our own unique personalities to help us see our particular traits, actions and reactions, coping methods and our style of speaking. It’s also a map for what is going on inside our internal landscape or terrain. But what makes The Enneagram different from other Personality Typing Maps is that it helps us understand WHY we do the things we do and what is driving us. It shows us the lens through which we see the world and gives us a look through others’ lenses. It is a powerful tool that shows us what it feels like to be in our own skin and it offers a way to understand others in theirs. As mother and daughter, Earlene Fowler and Denée King share a lifetime of being told ‘the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree’ or ‘they’re two peas in a pod’! But the Enneagram brought to light why their reactions to being told by those in authority that they could no longer be a part of the only church community they had ever been a part of, were so very different. In Part 1 of this two-part series we share what it’s like to experience life from our own unique ‘typologies’ or Enneagram numbers. We will set the groundwork for why our reactions to one of the most emotionally traumatic events in our lives — leaving the traditional religious community of our family —were so very different.
