Self-control is an important mark of maturity because it enables you to live in a way that pleases God, rather than being held captive by your fleeting feelings and passions. The ability to forgo immediate gratification for a long-term reward is fundamental to following Jesus.Preached by Jared Kress on March 2nd, 2025. Primary Text: Selected Passages. What use is strength if it can't be harnessed and used for good? What use is power if it isn't able to be channeled in a productive manner? So it is with the Christian man who lacks self-control. In this episode, the guys discuss the need for men of God to be self-ruled men, not by sheer white-knuckled exertion, but by the gradual and powerful influence of the Holy Spirit.
As the return of Jesus seems to be closer than ever, the most important thing in life is to be right with Him, and to find out what He wants in your life, and fulfill it. We who preach the word go first, and this pleases human nature; [but] grace is needed to make older, wealthier, and often wiser men go second and keep their place without envyings and bickering's: thousands do this, and are to be honored for it.” — Charles Spurgeon While scripture is clear that the role of ELDER is reserved for MEN; depending on the translation of a couple of key texts - WOMEN can *DEFINITELY MAYBE* fill the role of DEACON. Romans 16:1 // 1 Timothy 3:11 Regardless of what Deacons DO, Deacons are to BE: 1. Self-CONTROLLED in their SPEECH, APPETITES and FINANCIAL dealings. Ref. Ephesians 4:29, 5:5, 5:18 2. CLEAR in their UNDERSTANDING of the GOSPEL and in their COMMITMENT to SELFLESSLY SERVE the church. 1 Timothy 5:21-22, 24-25 3. FAITHFUL to LOVE and LEAD their FAMILIES well. Text: Titus 2:6-8 Sound Doctrine Produces Sound Men Who are Self-Controlled (2:6). God calls older men to life-on-life discipleship that culminates in the sanctification of younger men. God calls younger men to a life of self-mastery in thought and deed. Sound Doctrine Produces Sound Men Who Lead and Teach By Example (2:7-8) God calls the leaders of the church to lead by example in good works in doctrinal purity, personal dignity, and edifying speech. The Gospel will be put on display and the enemies of the Gospel will be put to shame.
In this final scene we witness the brutal execution of Jesus. He's beaten, mocked, nailed to a cross, and left to die. Incredibly, he met repeated insults with gentle blessings. Enduring tremendous pain in every form, he remained under controlled. Here in the darkest moment of all of history we see the gentle Lamb of God bearing the sins of the world.

Special guest: Dr. William Stixrud. Are we raising an anxious generation? Many would agree that we are. The causes of the uptick in anxiety among children has started to be discussed—even within our podcast- we have talked with Jessica Lahey and our obsession with grades and our focus on avoiding failure at all costs. We have talked with Julie Lythcott Haims about the bubble-wrapping of our children that leaves them unprepared for a life that we deliver them to at the age of 18—a life in which they don't have the skills, yes, but also where they don't have the resilience or the confidence to take it on. In The Self-Driven Child, authors William Stixrud and Ned Johnson continue this conversation—focusing specifically on the ways that children today are being denied a sense of controlling their own lives—doing what they find meaningful, and succeeding or failing on their own, and on their own terms. While screen time and technology certainly are part of the problem, the real issues lie with us—the parents and the teachers—who have their hearts in the right place but are nevertheless, taking the opportunities away from children that would allow them to grow stronger, more confident, more autonomous, more competent-- and more themselves. William R. Stixrud, Ph.D., is a clinical neuropsychologist, frequent lecturer, presenter, author and founder of The Stixrud Group. He is a member of the teaching faculty at Children's National Medical Center and an assistant professor of psychiatry and pediatrics at the George Washington University School of Medicine. Additionally, Dr. Stixrud is the author, with Ned Johnson, of the nationally bestselling book, The Self-Driven Child: The Science and Sense of Giving Your Kids More Control Over Their Lives. You will also see him featured for his expertise in publications such as The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Times of London, The Wall Street Journal, U.S. News and World Report, Time Magazine, Scientific American, Business Week, Barron's, and, New York Magazine. Guest: Dr. Steven Smith Dr. Steven Smith is the senior pastor at Immanuel Baptist Church in Little Rock, AR. Here is his bio from their website: Steven W. Smith is a fourth-generation pastor and has served at Immanuel since 2017. After being a pastor for many years, Dr. Smith most recently served as Vice President for Student Services and Professor of Preaching at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Dr. Smith enjoys writing and is the author of several books on preaching. He is honored to be a Senior Fellow for the Spurgeon Library of Midwestern Seminary. For his advice to our T4M audience, Steven turned to the Book of Titus - the Apostle Paul's letter about leadership with some sage wisdom for young and older men. Here's what Paul wrote in Titus chapter 2: But as for you, teach what accords with sound doctrine. Older men are to be sober-minded, dignified, self–controlled, sound in faith, in love, and in steadfastness. Likewise, urge the younger men to be self-controlled. Interesting note - for Paul's wisdom to the young men, he gives only one thing - to be “self-controlled” or “self-disciplined.” Discipline levels the playing field in life - get discipline and you'll be successful regardless of what gifts and abilities you have or where you started! “The resentment of discipline of any kind will warp the whole life away from God's purpose. We can all see God in exceptional things, but it requires the culture of spiritual discipline to see God in every detail.” Oswald Chambers How can you learn the character quality of self-discipline? There are many ways to develop this characteristic in life - take up a musical instrument, play a sport, start a hobby and stick with it…learn to do hard things and develop this important attribute for success in life. Other things that are helpful in developing self-control: Community - get some other guys on board with you to help encourage and challenge you toward your goals Accountability - set goals, communicate those with others who can hold you accountable Proverbs 1:23 “If you turn at my reproof, behold, I will pour out my spirit to you; I will make my words known to you.” A great life lesson is learning to TURN INTO the discipline, the hard things - don't turn away, lean in and trust the process of growth and maturity, true growth takes effort and work - the only thing that grows without work is weeds! Hebrews 12:9-11 “Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of spirits and live! They disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share in his holiness.” Learning these life disciplines are for a “short” time - then they can become habits and patterns for life! Two types of discipline: Corrective - you've done something wrong, this discipline moves you away from what is harmful toward what is helpful Instructive - even if you haven't done anything wrong, you can listen and learn and move toward things that are helpful in life Steven Smith's recommendation: Spurgeon by Arnold A. Dallimore The Titus Ten: Foundations for Godly Manhood by J. Josh Smith Goal Setting - consider using Luke 2:52 as a framework - Jesus grew in wisdom, statute, and in favor with God and with man - how can you grow and mature in those four characteristics? Final Thought - so much of the Bible IS WRITTEN TO YOUNG MEN! How awesome is that reality - God's Word is intended to be a helpful tool and resource for young men who want to develop self-discipline in life so that they can be successful and lead their families, businesses, and communities!
