In this episode of Enneagram at Work, we continue the 9 Types Overview Series with a fast-paced, insightful look at Enneagram Type 3: Striving to Feel Outstanding, often known as The Achiever or, in the Awareness to Action model, The Pacesetter. We'll explore how Type 3s bring drive, confidence, and high performance to the workplace, and how their desire to succeed and be seen as capable influences their leadership style, communication, and relationships at work.Pulling from real client examples and team dynamics from recent workshops, we'll look at what helps Type 3s thrive, what derails them, and how teams can support the “go-getters” who keep everyone moving forward. What You'll Learn When You Tune In:The core motivation behind Type 3's drive to feel outstandingWhy Type 3s are often seen as natural leaders and high performersHow their strengths - drive, focus, adaptability - become blindspots when overusedKey characteristics of the Pacesetter Leadership StyleWhat energizes vs. drains Type 3s at workHow instinctual biases (Preserving, Navigating, and Transmitting) create three distinct flavors of Type 3Growth practices using their arrows to Type 6 and Type 9How to give feedback in ways that build trust, not defensivenessTry This at Work: Quick ExperimentsIf you're a Type 3: Track how you showed up, not just what you achieved. Practice slowing down long enough to rest, reflect, and reconnect with your own values. If you work with a Type 3: Acknowledge accomplishments and effort. Set clear, meaningful goals. Invite authenticity by asking how they're doing behind the successes. For Teams & LeadersType 3s bring momentum, optimism, and ambition to the workplace. They raise the bar, inspire confidence, and help teams deliver results. But they also carry the weight of constant expectation, both from others and themselves.Teams that work well with Type 3s create space for connection, authenticity, and rest, not just performance. A healthy Type 3 doesn't just do great work; they model sustainable success and motivate others to grow with them.Have a request for a future episode? Drop a text here!

If you're a Type 3, or someone close to you is, this conversation will help you understand the nuanced ways this type shows up in the world. We unpack the two wings of Type 3—2 (The Helper) and 4 (The Individualist)—and how these influences can add layers of relational sensitivity or creativity. We also break down the three instinctual subtypes (Self-Preservation, Social, and One-to-One), highlighting how these survival instincts further refine a Type 3's motivations, focus, and approach to life. Finally, we offer practical insights for self-awareness, personal growth, and how Type 3s can lead authentically while staying rooted in God's grace and purpose. Key Points Covered: A quick review of the core motivations and fears of Enneagram Type 3s. The characteristics and dynamics of 3w2 (The Charmer) and 3w4 (The Professional). How the instinctual subtypes (Self-Preservation, Social, and One-to-One) influence a Type 3's drive and relationships. INFJ's are one of the rarest types representing less than 1% of the population. Today my interview is with Elizabeth Reed Watkins who just published a memoir of her life growing up in Maine entitled the Maine Thing. We will discuss how she parents her four very different kids and she gives advice for parents with an INFJ child. She is also an Enneagram Type 3, so this episode will resonate with all the over achievers out there as well. Going back through her journey we talk about vivid dreams, imagination, friendships, sports, learning, deep emotional struggles and balancing her high ideals and need to achieve with the need to stay grounded. Stay tuned to the end because we have a mini coaching session to help all the over achievers out there, and I am one of them, learn to be easier on themselves. In true INFJ style, Elizabeth is truly vulnerable and authentic in this interview. Here are five main takeaways: Encourage Imagination and don't accuse them of lying Let them daydream and have time to recharge Realize they are an introvert and highly sensitive person and help them with coping strategies Choose their activities carefully; Individual sports may be better for them than team sports Pay attention to their activity level because overachieving can be a red flag I just worked with parents who were looking at their ISTP Enneagram Type 8 lion daughter with a distorted lens. They were seeing her leadership capabilities and determination as demanding, her ability to problem solve as manipulation and they were expecting her to be a rule follower like her brother rather than an independent thinker. Connection and Control are the two most important needs for any child. They just purchased my Thrive program so they can reframe the way they see and work with their kids and have more peace in their home. You can take the first step by going to WendyGossett.com and taking my free child temperament test for one of your kids. I evaluate the results myself which is what sets it apart from other tests. In today's episode, Shasta and her friend Karen confront a struggle they're still having—it seems like Karen is always busy, even when they're together. Karen considers why she always has a full plate, and reveals the key to getting her attention and what she wishes her friends knew. Shasta gets vulnerable about feeling like an obligation and affirms the very common pain of thinking we care more than someone else does. Then, Karen reveals what strategies work well for her to maintain relationships, and finally, Shasta realizes what is really triggering her about Karen's busyness and how they can strengthen their relationship. In this episode, Shasta and Karen answer the questions:What does it mean if your friend is always too busy? Do they not care as much as you, or is there another reason? How can you ensure your friends feel valued when you're always busy? How can you support your chronically busy friend, and still feel seen in the relationship?Connect with other listeners on our Mighty Networks community!Join Shasta's mailing list to be the first to know about upcoming episodes, friendship coaching, trips, and more: https://www.shastanelson.com/mailing-list. Enneagram Type 3s, nicknamed The Achiever, are smooth and success-driven, endeavoring to show with their life that the sky's the limit for what can be accomplished. They are also often concerned that others can see through their image. Famous examples include Elon Musk, Oprah Winfrey, Michael Jordan, Barack Obama, Taylor Swift, and Lady Gaga. In this episode, we explore the essence of the Type 3 and the insecurities and motivations that drive their every action and relationship. We walk you through the story of the Type 3's life by looking at their journey through the Levels of Consciousness from their healthiest to their average to their most destructive ways of operating. We close the episode by offering a critical type-tailored practice to help 3s rise up in consciousness and be the best version of themselves. This episode is designed to help Type 3s thrive in their personal and professional lives by fostering a deeper understanding of their insecurities and motivations. It's also an invaluable resource for friends, partners, and colleagues of Type 3s who wish to better support and relate to them.Links:www.upbuild.comwww.upbuild.com/enneagram101 Instagram: @upbuildnycFacebook: UpbuildLinkedIn: Upbuild
On this solo show, I am sharing my reflections on being an Enneagram Type 3. I share what I've learned about my motives and core strategies for getting through life and how I've come to question which strategies serve me and which no longer serve me. These reflections are based on my interview on the previous episode with Sarah Wallace, Certified Enneagram Coach. It is also part of a month-long series focused on Productivity, Ambition, and Mental Health. Tune into the episode for more details! “In motherhood particularly, as a Type 3, I've had to challenge my definition of success. No one is handing out a raise for wiping butts. In this episode of the Being Human is Good For Business Podcast, we learn about leaders who rely on their hearts to guide them. This group includes Enneagram Types 2, 3 and 4, all of whom tend to have attention seeking motivations, according to Trilogy Effect Partner Mary Beth Sawicki. She explains, “Known as heart-centered or feeling-centered, these leaders want to be seen the way they want to be seen. In a business context these are the leaders who form strong personal connections and prioritize relationships. Their attention is often focused on human systems over business systems. They see the world through a lens that focuses on the personal.” The Trilogy Effect team uses the Enneagram framework to help leaders grow through self-awareness and to surface untapped potential in their teams. The Enneagram comprises nine distinct personality Types in groups of three, based on core motivations, specific strengths and liabilities. This is the ultimate entrepreneur/leader mashup - Type 3 known as the The Achiever, The Performer, and The Role Model with Type 8 known as The Boss, The Protector, and The Challenger. Both Type 3 and Type 8 have the forward-thinking and fast-paced assertive energy. Leadership tends to come more natural for these types and they both can be very ambitious and very competitive. They want to rise above the rest, but how they go about that is very different. Listen in to this episode to hear the key differentiators for these two to help you continue to narrow down your dominant type. Quick typing tip:Eights tend to quickly know who they are and most of the time identify with an 8 from the beginning, so if there's confusion between which type is you between these two, know that most of the time (but not always!) it's a Type 3 that's confusing themselves with an 8 vs the other way around. ---Was this helpful?
