The composer and producer, and multi-instrumentalist Ólafur Arnalds met the Cork singer-songwriter Eoin French aka Talos after he ran a marathon in Iceland. A friendship was struck, that quickly developed into a musical partnership, as seen at Sounds From A Safe Harbour in Cork in 2023, when the festival director Mary Hickson put the pair together for a collaboration. Now six months after Eoin's death, Arnalds and French's family, friends and collaborators have been celebrating the artist's creativity and legacy with the stunning song they wrote together 'We Didn't Know We Were Ready'. The song was performed on The Tommy Tiernan show on RTÉ in January under Arnalds' Opia community banner with vocals from Niamh Regan, Ye Vagabonds, JFDR, The Staves, Sandrayati Fay, Dermot Kennedy, Laoise Leahy, Memorial, Christof Van Der Ven and most poignantly of all, Eoin's wife Steph French. In our chat with Ólafur today, he recounts meeting Eoin, their creative time spent together and the instructions he received from Eoin before he died to finish the record they made together, which will be released later this year. * Support Nialler9 on Patreon, get event discounts, playlists, ad-free episodes and join our Discord community Songs referenced on the Nialler9 Podcast Spotify Playlist Listen on Apple | Android | ACAST | Patreon | Pocketcasts | CastBox | Stitcher | Spotify | RSS Feed | Pod.Link

Eoin French aka Talos passed away on Sunday, August 11. This is a repost of TPOE 56, our interview from 2017, around the release of his debut album Wild Alee. Team Talos announced Eoin's death on social media with the following message: It is with great sadness that we let you know that our friend Eoin French, known to many the world over as Talos, has passed away after a short illness. Eoin passed peacefully in his sleep early on the morning of Sunday August 11 2024 in his native Cork, surrounded by his loved ones. A beautiful soul, a true artist, a son, a husband, a father, and a friend. We are devastated by his passing. As was his wish, there will be new music from Talos to share with you all in the future. It feels so fitting to me that we get to kiss season 5 goodbye with a friend of mine from Ireland, the incredibly talented Eoin French (aka Talos). A supremely talented individual, Talos has achieved international acclaim by creating these soundscapes that transport you elsewhere. Brilliant at experimenting with various electronic textures, beats and arrangements, it's wild how he's figured out this sweet spot between being abstract and direct with his music. A major theme of his music is embellishing contrasts, which he's done so effectively on his latest body of work, Dear Chaos (which is out now). Naturally we chat about his works, but a lot of this episode centers around how personal art is by it's very nature. Eoin is someone who deeply cares about the human condition, and with that he evokes so much of what this series is about; how we can learn about ourselves by trying to learn about those around us. In Eoin's case, Dear Chaos is a body of work that was born in solitude but fostered by collaboration (including a mutual old friend of ours, the legendary Lisa Hannigan). Season 6 of the podcast will be coming at ya May 2023, BUT don't worry, there'll be some special (and wildly different) bonus episodes coming February 2023. Be sure to subscribe so you don't miss out (especially on Spotify).
We hear from John Connolly on his new book The Furies; Emmet Kirwan and Eoin French on their new play Accents! at the Project Arts Centre; and Cristín Leach reviews the new exhibition at the Crawford Art Gallery.
Elaine Howley (Altered Hours) and Eoin French (Talos) are working together, along with Katie Ellis (Crash Ensemble) on music for Eriu's Threshold, a new multidisciplinary project from the team behind Body & Soul. Featuring an outstanding cast of renowned Irish female talent from the worlds of theatre, dance, film, literature, fashion design, and music, the project interprets the past in response to the current global pandemic. The film features a re-interpretation of Henry Purcell's aria Dido's Lament, which is considered, in classical music, one of the most heart-wrenching portrayals of the passing into death. 'Eriu's Threshold', however, reimagines this aria through the Irish mythological goddess, Eriu. The lament was selected as one of the most powerful and timeless expressions of death and loss. It appeals to us to 'Remember' to remember people, remember where we come from, who we are... It sounds like a fascinating project - you can register for free to watch the film, which premieres on Saturday, February 13 on Bodyandsoul.ie.
