Season 7 Episode 9 went out live on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 29 Feb 2024.  We had a full house in TSORR Central and the show was an absolute pleasure to do.   It was a good mix of classics, brand new tracks, heavy, not so heavy, something for everyone.   For this week's Immortals feature – a track over 7 min that showcases what an artist is all about, we gave the multi-talented Steven Wilson the slot.  Wilson is well known for his work as a solo artist as well as with Porcupine Tree released Hand. Cannot.  Erase in 2015.  We listened to a track called 'Happy Returns / Ascendant Here On'.    The Diabolical challenge this week looked at four bands beginning with the letter ‘I'.  The idea is that we have 4 albums, and you can only pick one.  This week we had: Iggy & The Stooges – Raw PowerIan Hunter – You're Never Alone With a SchizophrenicIron Maiden – Somewhere In TimeIn Flames – Clayman Artists Featured:  The Answer, KISS, Saxon, Accept, Black Sabbath, Papa Roach, Newsted, Nevada Beach, The Dead Daisies, Cold Chisel, Hollywood Vampires, Nita Strauss, Sixx AM, The Rods, Black Bone Nation, Jack Hammer, Sugar Drive, Rumboat Chili, Sons of Liberty, Judas Priest, Paradise Lost, The Stranglers, The Jam, Metallica, Steven Wilson, Ian Hunter, Iggy pop, Iron Maiden, in Flames, Hinder, Sheryl Crowe, Hell Yeah, Slayer, Augustines, The Gaslight Anthem, Parkway Drive, Five Finger Death Punch, Bullet For My Valentine The Story of Rock and Roll. Welcome to episode 111 with William McCarthy who is a musician, songwriter, and the former lead singer of the band Augustines. Bill grew up around mental illness, alcoholism, and poverty.  When he was 19, his mother died by suicide after many years of addiction and deteriorating mental health issues.  His younger brother was also diagnosed with a mental illness and also died by suicide whilst being held in prison without the proper care and support. These experiences, and the story of Bill's childhood, largely inspired the songs for the first Augustines record and his story, and that of the band, was told in the documentary ‘Rise: The Story of Augustines' which came out in 2018. I caught up with Bill to chat about his early experiences with mental ill health and how they form the basis of his personal crusade to raise awareness around mental health issues. We chat about being in a band and life on the road.  We chat about how mental illness is misreported by the media and how that informs stigma, and we chat about human connection, showing compassion and the need for good role models. Bill has recently been to Canada to play music and speak to school children about mental health and we chat about that too. William McCarthy is one of my all-time favourite musicians from one of my all-time favourite bands so to say this episode was special for me was an understatement! This is a look at the Vision of God as described by Saint Augustine. He describes several visions he received while in Milan in 386, and in Ostia in 388. These narratives owe much to Augustines reading of Plotinus, but they also reflect his own deepening awareness of God's action in his life and the action of grace as a model for the meaning of human existence. Augustine's message is that finding God is not a solipsistic affair, but is essentially ecclesiological, given to those that awaken within the united whole of creation. Today on World Footprints we celebrate Canada’s Francophone roots in the Quebec region as we walk in the footsteps of history at the New France Festival in Quebec City. Plus, we’ll visit an Augustinian Monastery turned holistic spa and we’ll talk to an Old World wine merchant. The walled fortifications in Old Quebec make Quebec City one of the most romantic and picturesque places to explore on foot. We explore the heart and soul of the city with Marc Duchesne of Cicerone Tours. For five days every August, Quebec City celebrates its connection to France with the New France Festival. The actors and festival-goers enjoy food and folly in their period costumes representing the peasant, bourgeois and royalty classes. (Our costumes represented the bourgeois class.) Melanie Raymond, the festival’s Executive Director, shares the essence of one of North America’s best festivals. The New France Festival has its share of ingenious characters like historian and outdoorsman Billy Rioux, aka “Billy the Adventurer”. He displayed the canoe that he carved from a spruce bark and entertained visitors with stories about early settlers and their interaction with the indigenous population. Then, we took a detour to the Charlevoix Region and visited Domaine de la Vallee du Bras where we did some wine tasting—tomato wine. The vineyard is the first in the world to make this unique wine under the Omerto label. Pascal Miche and his wife Stephanie Hott told us the story about how they started this unique wine in between sips. Spoiler alert: The wine is very tasty—surprisingly tasty. Finally, we shined a spotlight on le Monastere des Augustines. The home of the Augustinian Sisters has found a new mission as a center for holistic health, healing and hospitality in the heart of Quebec City. We also enjoyed a conversation with the Merchant de Boisson at the New France Festival. He delighted us with tales of the challenges he had importing wines from the Old World to New France at the urging of the noblesse oblige. #humpdaygiveaway | Week 5 Q: What are the names of the two students that I spontaneously interview towards the end of the show? Episode 26 has been in the works for a bit of time now. A couple of months ago I saw a video of Omari’s father, Cyril, playing drums, on his IG account. I understood from Episode 37 on DrummersILike’s podcast that Omari had watched his father, Cyril, play drums a lot during his childhood. It was clear in the tone of Omari’s voice on the podcast that he was truly inspired by his father and strongly looked up to him. I was inspired by that episode and I really enjoyed Omari’s personality on the show and I kinda decided that I needed him on DrumGAB after that. But after seeing Cyril playing, the thought hit me like a wall, I HAD to have them both on the show together. So, literally within minutes of having this idea, I messaged Omari to ask whether or not we could have Cyril on the show as well. Omari’s response to my request was unanimous. My wish had come true. A father and son podcast was going to happen on my show!! I had not ever seen something like this before on a drumming podcast before and that made it even more reason to do it. The main goal with this podcast for me was to capture an honest reaction from both of them once we became more involved in the conversation. There was such a great opportunity to create some magic on this one.   A LITTLE BIT ABOUT OMARI Omari is a coveted drum instructor from Trinidad and Tobago. He has multiple endorsements including Promark Drumsticks, Evans Drum Heads, D’Addario, Serenity Drums, Tru Tuner, LowBoy Custom Beaters, Drumlite and Drumtacs. He is also a certified Drumeo Teacher, a drum tutor at Angelic Sounds Music Centre, a drum coach at CJ’s Coaching Institute, and he performs with many musicians including Curtis Jordan, GIEL, Helen Baylor, Koen Duncan, Shiselon, Tiko Angelos, and Wave. That is quite a pedigree! Oh right, I almost forgot…..Omari is an absolute beast!! Best not forget to mention that. A LITTLE BIT ABOUT CYRIL Cyril is a self taught player and it was his Uncle, who also played, that introduced Cyril to the drums at age 11. Cyril’s Uncle showed him enough theory and different rhythms to begin a lifelong passion for drums. Cyril had played with many bands in the area and there was a time when Cyril was unable to attend a performance and so he recommended Omari to fill his spot for the night. The bands response the following week….? “Well Cyril, we didn’t miss you that much”, said Cyril’s bandmates. For years, Omari and Cyril had never jammed together. Each of them worked at their craft without crossing paths musically. Until one day they performed a duet….at Omari’s wedding. Both gentlemen sporting their finest tux and both of them are shredding it up! To think their maiden jam would be at Omari’s wedding is very special indeed. Overall, this is a heartwarming episode with lots of character and it highlights the beauty of family and people coming together to reach a common goal through music. It is a very inspiring episode to say the least.
