On this week's show, we celebrate Pride Month with the LGBTQ+ icons of queer country & new wave, and pour one out for legends Sly Stone and Brian Wilson as well as the sorely underrated Jill Sobule. All this & much, much less! Debts No Honest Man Can Pay is a podcast that thinks it's a radio show...because it used to be one. The show started in 2003 at WHFR-FM (Dearborn, MI), moved to WGWG-FM (Boiling Springs, NC) in 2006 & Plaza Midwood Community Radio (Charlotte, NC) in 2012, with a brief pit-stop at WLFM-FM (Appleton, WI) in 2004. It phoenixed into a podcast in 2020, thanks to the fine and fabulously furious folks at NRM Streamcast.

In the second half of their Discography double bill, Graham and Chris dive “Double In Depth” into the remaining nine tracks. The Introspective singles take them raving with Frankie Knuckles and the dawn of Acid House, while Behaviour sees them smoking about cigarettes and harping on about harps. There's even chance for them to show off Graham's amateur percussion skills, and Chris's even more amateur language pronunciation skills. C'est la vida é! But can they squeeze in a countdown of the top 10 longest Pet Shop Boys song titles?” To support the Pet Shop Boys In Depth podcast visit our Crowdfunder: https://gofund.me/5a755ef8 Or our T-shirt store: https://in-depth.teemill.com And you can get additional In Depth content on social media: Facebook: http://tiny.cc/3jhcvz Bluesky: http://tiny.cc/jc7h001 X: http://tiny.cc/lc7h001

Graham and Chris celebrate the blue vinyl reissue of double album Discography by going “Double In Depth” to trade some of their most obscure facts yet. From the first record alone, they unearth early draft lyrics, an old BBC Two documentary, an Elvis TV special, the 1988 UK singles chart, and Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine - while also examining the roles of both the saxophone and Pink Floyd in the Pet Shop Boys canon. But who knew Enya was stalking Neil and Chris's every move? More next week! Whether it's a catastrophe or a bourgeois construct, Pet Shop Boys have much to say on love. And so do Graham and Chris - first putting their own love for the band under the microscope to try and uncover where love becomes obsession. Then comes the lyrical deep-dive, unpicking all the ways Neil “Man of Mystery” Tennant crafts a love song, before Chris “Intense Urges” Lowe derails things and we all need to go for a cold shower. Plus: there's a high-stakes middle bit where two straight middle-aged men talk about sexuality, and a more familiar climax where they compile the ultimate Pet Shop Boys love album: Slush. In their second Actually episode, Graham and Chris unearth the stories behind some of Pet Shop Boys' most loved songs, with tales of paranoia, privatisation, puppets and Pavarotti. There's a comprehensive breakdown of inspirations and collaborators - from Bobby O and Ennio to Cameo and Gazebo - and analysis of everything, including the kitchen sink. By the time the last train pulls out of King's Cross, they've uncovered the album's major themes, and things are looking bleak. Thankfully love is discovered in a pair of Heart singles. In this episode of In the Key of Q, Dan Hall speaks with Ben McGarvey, who performs as Minute Taker. Ben's music is characterized by a signature blend of retro synth-pop, haunting piano melodies, and emotionally charged lyrics that explore the depth of human experience.Episode SummaryBen opens up about the origins of his stage name "Minute Taker" – a reference to his former day job that created an ironic contrast with his artistic identity. He describes it as "simultaneously mundane and otherworldly," reflecting the dual nature of his creative life. The conversation traverses Ben's musical evolution from a teenager in the 90s who was drawn to 80s synth music to his current work creating atmospheric, emotionally resonant songs. Ben reflects on how living in rural Shropshire as a young gay man shaped his relationship with music as a form of escape and self-expression.Throughout the episode, Ben courageously discusses his experiences with depression and how this has informed the melancholic quality of his music. Rather than viewing this melancholia as something negative, he explores how it can be "so beautiful" and serves as a connective tissue between artist and listener.Key Moments02:59 - Ben discusses his musical influences growing up, including Kate Bush, Pet Shop Boys, Tori Amos, and PJ Harvey07:47 - Reflections on growing up as a gay child in rural Britain during the Section 28 era09:35 - Ben shares his early songwriting experiences and how music became a form of escape16:46 - Discussion about representation and the importance of addressing songs explicitly to men22:46 - Ben speaks candidly about his experiences with depression and how it manifests24:44 - The evolution of Ben's work into audiovisual projects, including his concept album exploring gay men's lives throughout history28:32 - Details about his upcoming album "The Oblivion," inspired by Blade Runner and 80s sounds34:20 - Information about Ben's subscription service for fans to access exclusive musicGuest BioBen McGarvey is a Manchester-based musician who performs under the name Minute Taker. His work blends retro synth sounds with piano and emotional lyrics to create atmospheric, often melancholic music. Beyond traditional albums, Ben has expanded into audiovisual projects that explore LGBTQ+ experiences throughout history. His most recent album "Wolf Hours" included an accompanying visual narrative, and he's currently finishing his new album "The Oblivion."Gateway TrackBen recommends "Lead You Home," the opening track from his album "Wolf Hours," as the perfect introduction to his music. In the latest of their album deep-dives, Graham and Chris rewind life's cassette to summer 1987 to set the scene for the arrival of Actually. Graham's teenage diary shines new light on the headlines and music charts of the day, before the album's upfront singles are comprehensively unpacked, with a little help from Jonathan King (boo!) and Ed the Duck (hurrah!). After deconstructing the sleeve and mourning the memorabilia they've lost to Pet Shop Boys heaven over the decades, it's fantasy setlist time, with Chris pitching his ideas for the Actually tour which never actually happened. Phil Harding had his hands in as many hits in the 80s/90s as anyone you care to mention. We will only concern ourselves with the better decade as we look into his career as producer/engineer and mixer.1. THE EARLY YEARS (Pre-1980-83)How Phil got into the business in the 70s, working with the likes of Gerry Rafferty (Baker Street!), The Walker Brothers (No Regrets!) and The Clash (White Man in Hammersmith Palais!), etc.Phil moves into the 80s with KIlling Joke and a very unique contribution to Sign of The Times by The Belle Stars. There is discussion on the differences (and similarities) between mixing pop and rock.2. MATT BIANCO/BASIA (1984-88)Working with Peter Collins leads to engineering Matt Bianco's first album which leads to Phil producing the follow up and mixing Basia's first solo LP. Through Peter connections are made with Pete Waterman.General chat on Phil's approach to mixing a track.3. STOCK AITKEN AND WATERMAN (PT 1) (1983-87)Phil enters the world of SAW. Talk of who did what within the team and experiences with Lamont Dozier, Princess, Mel & Kim and early Rick Astley.Further talk on who had "Woolworth's ears" and why SAW didn't produce Pet Shop Boys.4. DEAD OR ALIVE (1986-88)Let's face it, this section is almost exclusively about You Spin Me Round, the first SAW number one and an iconic 80s hit.5. BANANARAMA (1986-88)Working on Venus, Bananarama wanted the Spin-Me-Round hi NRG treatment, leading to a number of massive pop hits. Also discussed is the Bananarama vocal approach and how it was decided who at the Hit Factory worked on what.EITHER/OR | Does Phil have the Terminator listen to Prince on his ghettoblaster or Robocop listen to MJ on his walkman?Phil can be found Website: philhardingmusic.comTwitter: @phardingmusicFacebook: Phil Harding80sography@gmail.comSend us a text

Later, due to a growing demand for software instruments and libraries, Eddie started to develop libraries for various software manufacturers, including Native Instruments, Kiesel, Sound Effects Library, Arturia and Propellerheads. A meeting with Phil Allen, a Capital Radio DJ, resulted in the company Samplecraze, which Eddie has spent 20 years developing as an educational resource. At this time he trained in music production and soon gained a number of prominent contracts working with some notable artistes such as Busta Rhymes, Greensleeves, 9 Bar, SFP, Sleeveless, Chris Campbell and Gam Productions. He contracted to Island Records and Chrysalis as a producer and remixer, plus was commissioned to write the score for Macbeth that ran at 2 Way Mirror at Alexander Palace for the Cambridge Shakespeare Company. Today's exceptionally danceable Electronically Yours episode features an in depth discussion with Mark Wood (Demon Records) and author Ian Wade about their new 5 CD + 4 LP boxsets, featuring the best queer club classics 1980-1989.Across five individually themed discs, the deluxe CD set presents 53 original extended versions, including many hard-to-find remixes, encompassing full-length High Energy, House, Diva, Pop, Europop and Alternative eighties classics from the likes of Pet Shop Boys, Grace Jones, Sylvester, Eartha Kitt, Divine, New Order, Hazell Dean, Laura Branigan and many more. Highlights include the hard-to-find 12” version of Village People's ‘Can't Stop The Music' plus the rarely-compiled underground club anthems ‘Pistol In My Pocket' by Lana Pellay and ‘After The Rainbow' by Joanne Daniëls. Not only were the ‘80s queer clubs where you were most likely to hear the latest groundbreaking developments in dance music (for example, house music would quietly flourish and innovate on the scene before busting overground and achieving near ubiquity as the decade progressed), there was also a heck of a lot of diversity on offer.Ladies and gentlemen - It's time to give in to sin – More Sin 2...If you can, please consider supporting the Electronically Yours podcast via my Patreon: patreon.com/electronicallyours
In the late 1980s, the English synth-pop duo Pet Shop Boys dominated the U.K. pop charts and staged an invasion of the American charts. Years later, founding member Neil Tennant dubbed this streak of creative and commercial supremacy the group's “imperial phase”—a term that eventually caught on among music critics and pop fans. So, what does it take for an artist to achieve imperial dominance? Why might Fleetwood Mac in the 1970s or The Weeknd in the 2010s qualify, while Cher or Lizzo don't quite fit the bill? Are there rules for imperial phases? Hit Parade's Chris Molanphy says yes—he's got chart rules for determining when an artist is at peak imperiality. And he says Madonna's late '80s streak of hits might be the ultimate imperial phase. Join Chris as he dissects the most regal artists across the decades, defining what makes them imperial—and he walks hit by hit through Madonna's biggest phase, which may remain unmatched.
