INTRO:I'm Hank, a nineteen year podcasting veteran, filmmaker, and YouTuber, and this is my review of Disney's Tron: Ares. This is a spoiler-filled review of the movie so if that's not your cup of tea this review won't be for you. Note: I saw this movie in 3D and I have never seen Tron: Legacy. I'm neither a Tron fan nor do I know much about the lore.BUDGET:$180-$220 million for production and another $100-ish million for marketing. We're looking at around $300 million dollars when it's all said and done. Three weeks in and we're at about roughly $125 million. OUCH! Profitability is way out of reach.SETTINGS:The world of Tron: Ares is pristine! The saturated colors jump off the screen even in the often dark settings. I found the visuals of this movie to actually match the inflated budget. Moreover, even the regular settings were shot with depth and attention to detail that is simply missing in most modern movies.CHARACTERS:I'm not going to reflect on all the characters, but I'll talk about the main cast.Jared Leto plays the one note Ares computer program that comes to life via the permanence code. I've heard a lot about how bland the Ares character is and I thought to myself how would I direct an actor to convey lines as a computer program made real? Probably just as stilted as his delivery. Could you have made the character be the one “special” character who delivers lines in a human way to set him apart from the others? I'm sure you could, but the way he delivered the lines, while bland, is probably the most logical course. I did like how he questioned what was happening, but those nuanced lines seem lost on many moviegoers. Greta Lee plays Eve Kim the CEO of ENCOM who is trying to find Kevin Flynn's "permanence code" to use for humanitarian purposes. While the character type has been done to death I did find myself having a soft spot for her based on her arc being tied to the death of her sister Tess. Her purpose driven story made sense but has been done ad nauseum. Jodie Turner-Smith as Athena seemed to finally be a role that worked for her. She's basically a 3D printed Terminator and I liked that they didn't stray from her mission and try to make her likeable.Evan Peters as Julian Dillinger was where the wheels started to come off of this movie. This tech billionaire trope is even worse than the Eve Kim checkbox character.Gillian Anderson's Elisabeth Dillinger was a waste in my opinion. She should have played the antagonist and been desperate to cement her legacy and then let things go off the rails from there. I'd of yeeted Evan Peters from the film faster than my ex can make a box of Girl Scout cookies disappear.Jeff Bridges (Kevin Flynn) is the white Samuel L. Jackson. He has devolved to a caricature. Arturo Castro as Seth Flores is simply miscast. That character has to be much younger in my opinion. Instead of a 40-year old, I'm casting someone in their early to mid 20's. HITS:The overall visuals are astounding! There's simply too much eye candy to ignore. From the suits, to the literal hacking where programs fight each other, I was blown away by the look and style of the film.I found the 3D printing insertion into the story to be both timely and cool. The effects for laser printing things in the real world were especially awesome. The 29 minute time limit for Ares and the others coming through to the real world was an idea I really liked. It reminded me of the recording limits back in the early 2010's where cameras that could record for 30 minutes or more were taxed at a higher rate than cameras that recorded for less than 30 minutes. It could be a nerdy deep cut

Anything interesting in the news today? There is, of course, another Tron movie out that no one asked for. Which people seem to be praising the score once again. And for some reason Jared Leto is headlining it. Good thing we didn't do it for this show. Though there is always the looming threat we will do that. Lucky for us there is alcohol. Speaking of which we watched Novocaine[2025]. Jack Quaid plays a man who has Congenital Insensitivity to Pain. He also works as an assistance manager in a bank. He lives a very boring life until runs into Amber Midthunder who awakens the trouser beast. Also she makes … Continue reading "Popcorn Pulse 252: Novocaine Kiss"

In this 300th episode spectacular, Mike takes a look at actors who've alienated everyone else on set including Jared Leto, Shia LaBeouf, Burt Reynolds, Lindsay Lohan, and Bill Murray. He shares the stories behind10 actors who were totally hated by the rest of their cast. In this week's Movie Review, Mike talks about Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere starring Jeremy Allen White. How it was not your traditional biopic it instead focuses squarely on the narrow window of time between 1981 and 1982 when Springsteen recorded his low-fi album Nebraska. Mike shares if the movie turned him into a Springsteen fan, the unexpected emotional punch of the movie, what it lacked and a big idea he wants to see from music biopics. In the Trailer Park, Mike talks about the new Netflix dramedy coming called Jay Kelly. George Clooney plays a famous movie star who goes on a European journey with his manager, played by Adam Sandler.
This one's messy—in the best way. We talk AI videos that look like drunk fever dreams, Miami Vice getting dragged out the grave again, and Jared Leto popping into an empty theater like a sad magician. There's yelling at ChatGPT, and the usual Gen Z slander (apparently “thank you” is canceled now?). Basically, it's dumb news, smart jokes, and just enough chaos to make you question why you still trust technology. In this week's Middle of Culture, we dive deep into our usual blend of media obsession and existential humor — from the strange delights of villainess light novels and the chaos of gacha games to Tron Ares, which Eden declares “not a good movie… but maybe the best Tron movie.” Peter shares his thoughts on new music from Conjurer and Author & Punisher, reviews Wind and Truth with mixed feelings, and outlines a possible new nonfiction project exploring the moral dehumanization of healthcare. Welcome to Window Dressings: Halloween bonus episode!!!! This year, I am talking about the classic teen-softcore horror film Urban Legend. The film has an ensemble cast that includes Tara Reid, Joshua Jackson, Rebecca Gayheart, and everyone's favorite hot bad boy turned alleged sexual predator, Jared Leto. It's in the same vein as I Know What You Did Last Summer and I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, which have both been Halloween special episodes from years past. The most significant difference is that the killer matters way more in this film than it did in the I Know What You Did Franchise, and there is a redhead in this one. It's also worth noting that the writer, Silvia Horta, also wrote Ugly Betty, which I know hits for the mid-twenties to late twenty-something crowd. Mary Claire Hannan designs the costumes.
In this episode of We Seen't It, the crew dives right into Josh's review of Jared Leto's latest flick, Tron 3 — and surprisingly, he's all in on it. Kevin follows up with his take on One Battle After Another, breaking down the chaos and cinematic moments that make it worth a watch. Then it's back to the madness with Scarefest 2025: Week 2, where the horror matchups get bloody: 1️⃣ Bram Stoker's Dracula vs. Sinners 2️⃣ Weapons vs. Trick 'r Treat 3️⃣ The Heretic (No Soliciting) vs. Totally Killer (80's Slasher) 4️⃣ Together vs. Silent Night, Deadly Night Part 2

TRON: Ares, the newest entry into the Tron franchise starring Jared Leto, Greta Lee and Evan Peters, has flopped in a big way and looks like it's going to be an over $100 million loss for Disney. So, what actually went wrong here? Let's break down the real reasons why TRON: Ares just didn't quite work (and why that doesn't necessarily mean it's a total failure forever.) In this episode of "Normal World," Dave Landau, 1/4 Black Garrett, and Angela break down the week's strangest headlines and cultural contradictions. They open with a porn star's unlikely career wish, high-end street-fighting classes in Manhattan, and the ongoing absurdity of the “No Kings” protests. From inflatable costumes to confused slogans, the crew unpacks the funniest moments from the movement. Gerard Michaels hits the streets to cover the rally firsthand, confronting protesters and revealing how little sense the slogans make. Back in the studio, the hosts react to the footage, question the politics behind the outrage, and explore how activism has turned into performance. The team then turns to Hollywood, dissecting Disney's box-office flop Tron: Ares and Jared Leto's failed attempt to revive the franchise. They close with a surprisingly dark look at the origin of The Smurfs and a round of listener voicemails filled with strange coincidences and celebrity hypotheticals. News just dropped about a BEN SOLO film developed by Adam Driver and Steven Soderbergh. Unfortunately for all of us, Disney CEO Bob Iger didn't allow it to be greenlit. We've been trying to talk about TRON for a while, so today we finally get to that (don't worry we'll get to Adam Driver and Ben Solo soon)! We're fans of TRON: Legacy, and we've been waiting for a sequel for a very long time. Now TRON: Ares has arrived. Starring Jared Leto, this film is a new story in the world of TRON more than a direct sequel. Jared Leto's involvement already had us worried about this one. It's a weird one this week. Lauren is here for a quick rundown of Roofman, but her technical difficulties cute her a hair short. Then Kevin and Andrew run with Tron: Ares, The Conjuring: Last Rites, Black Phone 2, and I Like Me. Lauren had a chance to get out to the theater this week and, despite needing to hop off the podcast early this week, gives us a pretty great rundown of the movie. It's based on a true story and stars Channing Tatum as an almost lovable criminal sho makes camp inside a Toys R Us while on the run from the police. As you'd expectm the film takes some liberties with true events, but it's very close to fact and Tatum gives what might be the performance of his career. It seems to deserve all of the praise it's been getting, so get out there and catch it if you can! After the internet deems Lauren's time done for the evening, the mic is passed to Andrew who reviews Tron: Ares. Here's the thing… it's really not as bad as it is being made out to be. Is it perfect? No. Is it better than Legacy? Probably? It's hard to say for sure, but it's certainly got more going for it than the recent press would suggest. That said, the biggest letdown is the lead, played by Jared Leto, which never helps a film succeed. That being said, if you enjoyed the first two Tron movies, you might really enjoy this one. Sticking with sequels that are less than stellar (though this time more in quality than just reviews), Kevin discusses The Conjuring: Last Rites. This film is a perfect example of what Roofman avoided. The longer this franchise has gone on, the further it's strayed from the facts. It even manages to paint the Warren's (played by Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson) as incredibly kind and giving, glossing over some truly terrible parts of their past. On top of that, the haunting used for this film is so vastly different from the original story, including a conjuring mirror (the actual name) that was not involved at all. This movie feels more like a cash grab than a sequel and is really only worth watching if you're looking to complete the film series. Andrew starts to right the ship with his review of Black Phone 2. This one is the best film of the 3 sequels reviewed so far and definitely keeps the ball rolling from the first film. We lean more into the supernatural with this one, but it ups the drama and really does a great job drawing you in. The performances are all solid and we are given a return of a great villain. Kevin's fears have all been assuaged and he is definitely excited to catch this when it streams. The guys close the show out on a light note, discussing the new documentary about John Candy, I Like Me. If you were not alive or under a rock, then maybe, somehow, you don't know who John Candy is. but for anyone else, this doc is essential viewing. It's a great telling of the life of a wonderful man, told by those who knew him the best. It's the story of struggle, success, love, and sadness. There isn't a ton that we can say that the doc can't say better, so if you have Prime, go watch this right away. As always, thank you for watching. If you haven't already, don't forget to Like & Subscribe. We love new viewers! Also, leave us comments and let is know how we are doing and what we can be doing better. Was the return to The Grid worth the wait? Resident movie screener Scotty Scoop (3.0/4.0) gives us his spoiler-free, honest review of TRON: ARES. The third installment of the sci-fi franchise sees two competing tech giants race to find the code that can make digital constructs permanent in the real world. Find out why this Jared Leto-led sequel might be "the last time" we see The Grid, and why Jeff Bridges was "criminally underutilized".
This week, the boys head to the jungle for one of Amazon Studios' first films, James Gray's “The Lost City of Z”. That's pronounced “Zed” for you British purists. The film stars Charlie Hunnam, Robert Pattinson with a beard and glasses, and Sienna Miller. It was produced by Brad Pitt's Plan B and was SOMEHOW filmed on a $30 million budget, half of which was spent flying the dailies out of the actual Amazon jungle. We get drinking with a few mini-reviews at the top, and Jeff must have started early because he recorded with his microphone facing the wrong way. IS THE THIRD TIME THE CHARM FOR A BELOVED FRANCHISE WHOSE FIRST FILM BOMBED AND WHOSE SEQUEL WAS ONLY A MODERATE BOX OFFICE SUCCESS?!??Fun Fact: the original 1982 Tron is one of Cupcake's favorite nostalgic cornerstone films. This week he forces WillDaBeast to watch the third film in the franchise: Tron: Ares. Directed by one of the co-directors of the last Pirates of the Caribbean movie and starring up and coming performers Greta Lee, Jodie Turner-Smith and Evan Peters, veteran actors Jeff Bridges and Gillian Anderson, and starring the nearly-cancelled, gorgeous but maybe difficult to work worth and satisfy, questionable celebrity Jared Leto, Tron: Ares dazzles with sizzling CGI effects and a banging Nine Inch Nails score. For a franchise that has only offered three films in FORTY THREE YEARS (!), will this sequel revive the “was it ever there” franchise or is it time for Tron to hit the “Recycle Bin” for good? For the first time in fifteen years (Tron Legacy, 2010), we are finally returning to The Grid. Though this time around, we are doing so with some new characters including the titular Ares (Oscar-winner Jared Leto) who is a digital soldier created by Dillinger Systems to be the ultimate "expendable" soldier to serve our military in the real world. Unfortunately to the consternation of his creator Julian Dillinger (Evan Peters), Ares is still in need of ONE code in particular to ensure that he can actually last for more than 29 minutes in the real world before deresolution. And that's where Eve Kim (Greta Lee) comes in as she's the CEO of the rival corporation ENCOM...yes the same ENCOM featured in the first two Tron films where the legendary Kevin Flynn (Oscar-winner Jeff Bridges) used to work. Guess WHO might have actual posession of this "permanence code?" As directed by Joachim Ronning (Kon-Tiki, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man Tell No Tales) and featuring music by Nine Inch Nailes, the race for the future is ON....and this time, it spills into the real world!Host: Geoff GershonEdited By Ella GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a textSupport the showhttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/
