In this episode we discussed our end-of-year Spotify Wrapped lists and what algorithmic listening means for us as subjects and social beings, mass culture's current expression in shared forms of circulation rather than in objects of attention held in common, the limits of poptimism, the sound of melancholy, experimental hip-hop, jazz, vocaloid(ish) bands, music as cinematic form, Sampa the Great, Ahmed Abdul-Malik, HoneyWorks, Weyes Blood, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and Arooj Aftab.
On this long-anticipated episode, I got to sit down with singer/songwriter Sam Burton to talk about the role that practices like Tarot and Jungian dream work have played in his personal growth and resulting creative endeavors/artistic career. We also discussed the evolution of his method of reading Tarot for others, and the delicate ethical considerations of this vulnerable but powerful work.Sam's song featured in the episode is “I Can Go With You”Follow Sam's work and various projects here and here!Psyche Magic Website, Socials and more!More on Sam Burton: Born and raised outside of Salt Lake City, Sam Burton moved to LA to pursue music. In the last year he toured with Loving and Jose Gonzalez. He recently wrapped up a three-week residency at Los Angeles' Club TeeGee, and will head out on the road with Weyes Blood and Indigo Sparke in the coming months. To coincide with the news of his signing to Partisan Records, Burton has released the new song “Maria.”“Maria” was produced by Jonathan Wilson (Angel Olsen, Father John Misty, Margo Price) at his Topanga Canyon Studio with some of the best studio players in LA, and perfectly showcases Burton's knack for mining pure Laurel Canyon AM gold. Pastoral string arrangements bloom in the background of Sam's striking honeyed vocals-like a modern-day Campbell, Orbison, or Nilsson.Together, Wilson and Burton achieve a sound that doesn't descend into retro pastiche, but rather becomes an evocative echo, a dream of the past. In scope, the music finds Burton using a far bigger canvas than on his acclaimed 2020 debut I Can Go With You, giving the emotions therein a new sense of urgency and intensity. The Psyche Magic Salon is a reader-supported publication. In a terrific new book, Taste in Music, musician Alex Bleeker (of Real Estate) and food and travel journalist Luke Pyenson (former drummer of Frankie Cosmos) cover the world of music through the foods bands eat while touring the world. In this episode, we speak with Alex and Luke about a book that brings a lot of heart and empathy to a subject that has been covered since the advent of food blogging. Any working band worth its salt cod enjoys food as much of the rest of us, filling their touring riders with subtle culinary flexes. Sure, food is the new rock and roll—and rockers love their food—but as we find out, this collection of essays from legends like Mark Ibold of Pavement, Chris Frantz of Talking Heads, and Natalie Laura Mering of Weyes Blood is more than a collection of “where bands eat”; it's an essential addition to the music writing canon and one of our favorite books of the year. Jerry Paper has collaborated with a bunch of artists we love including Weyes Blood and Tyler, The Creator. But after experiencing therapy and the radical growth that came out of it, their namesake Lucas Nathan decided they wanted to be a therapist. “Everything Angel” is about that decision. Nathan says: “When I was in my early 20s I told myself that my only skill was music so I had to figure out how to make it work as a career. I spent the past almost-decade actualizing that, without seeing that I’d closed so many doors for my understanding of myself. So this song is about knowing that my life can expand beyond what I told myself it was when I was younger, and that unknowing is the stance to take towards any big journey.”

LA based musician, multi-instrumentalist and producer Chris Cohen has been involved in the forever changing and challenging music scene for nearly three decades now. Having participated in groups such as Deerhoof, The Curtains, Natural Dreamers, Cryptacize, as well as contributions to Cass McCombs and Weyes Blood albums, Coehn released his accalimed debut back in 2012 entitled "Overgrown Path" and has since gained great attention for his incredible process for songwriting and unique abilities to conjure up certain elements that make him the outstanding the musician he is. With much anticipation since the release of his self-titled album in 2019, Cohen has made an epic return with "Paint A Room" and we couldn't be more excited. Enjoy!
Welcome back to Aquarium Drunkard Transmissions. LOST ANGEL: THE GENIUS OF JUDEE SILL is an intimate documentary portrait of a one-of-a-kind singer-songwriter from 1970s LA – Judee Sill. It charts her life from a troubled adolescence of addiction, armed robbery and prison through her meteoric rise in the music world and early tragic death. In two years, Judee went from living in a car to a deal with Asylum Records and the cover of Rolling Stone. As told by David Geffen, Linda Ronstadt, JD Souther, Jackson Browne and Graham Nash -- along with Judee herself -- the film explores Judee's unique musical style and the inspiring recent rediscovery of her singular music fostered by Shawn Colvin, Robin Pecknold of Fleet Foxes, Adrianne Lenker and Buck Meek of Big Thief, and Weyes Blood. Co-directors Brian Lindstrom and Andy Brown join us for a conversation how they discovered this nearly forgotten artist, their search for archival material on Judee Sill, finding the “right” way to tell her story, and connecting with wide array of artist, young and older who have been inspired by Judee's enduring work. This week the ghouls discuss Philip Ridley's 1990 film, The Reflecting Skin. It's a weird one! From wiki: “The Reflecting Skin is a 1990 British-Canadian dramatic horror film written and directed by Philip Ridley and starring Jeremy Cooper, Viggo Mortensen and Lindsay Duncan. Described by its director as a "mythical interpretation" of childhood,[4] the film weaves elements of vampirism, surrealism, black comedy, symbolism, and religious zealotry throughout its narrative about the perceptions and fantasies of an impressionable young boy in 1950s America. The Reflecting Skin places the majority of its action outdoors around the dilapidated farms and in the wheat fields of Idaho shot in idyllic sunlight which belies the dark secrets of the characters and plot.”They also discuss The Cure, Mr. Klein, Alain Delon, Europe, Europa, Udo Kier, Saltburn, Promising Young Woman, Priscilla, Sofia Coppola, Terrence Malick, Margot Tenenbaum, Mike Leigh, Weyes Blood, Flannery O' Connor, David Lynch, Roger Ebert, Mario Bava, and more! For the seventh episode of 400 Floor we talk to Esra Padgett and Mark Iosifescu, better known together as Angels in America. We talk about growing up in Manhattan, engrossing themselves in the New York underground music scene of the aughts, getting the attention of Thurston Moore, touring with Weyes Blood, and how they developed their highly individual style of music that is noisy yet melodic, straightforward yet conceptual, deadpan yet slapstick. Today Mac DeMarco releases an album of instrumentals called Five Easy Hot Dogs. How good is it? Well, it's an instrumental album called Five Easy Hot Dogs — you do the math. At the very least, the record was a good excuse to talk about the career and legacy of one of modern indie's most influential artists (32:47). Steve Hyden is a fan though he considers himself more of a "liker" than a "lover" of his music. Ian Cohen, however, has been a vocal critic. What are Ian's beefs? Was Steve able to talk him into re-considering Mac?The opening banter segment covers two of the biggest indie album announcements of the week — Boygenius' The Record (12:28) and The National's First Two Pages of Frankenstein (:26). What's up with that weird National album cover? Why is the Boygenius album cover already meme-able? Eventually, Steve and Ian also get around to talking about the music. In Recommendation Corner (54:43), Ian stumps for an actual book! It's Status And Culture by W. David Marx, which explains how the titular subjects are shaped and formulated. As for me, I shouted out Mercy by octogenarian musical legend John Cale, which includes cameos by Weyes Blood, Animal Collective, and Sylvan Esso.New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday. Weyes Blood - "Grapevine" from the 2022 album And In The Darkness, Hearts Aglow on Sub Pop. Los Angeles-based artist Weyes Blood (real name: Natalie Mering) explores the ways we're tangled together on the wistful acoustic ballad "Grapevine." “Technology is harvesting our attention away from each other,” she said, via a press release. “We all have a ‘Grapevine' entwined around our past with unresolved wounds and pain. Being in love doesn't necessarily mean being together. Why else do so many love songs yearn for a connection?” Read the full story at KEXP.orgSupport the show: https://www.kexp.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The holidays are here, meaning it's not only time to tune out holiday music in every store but it's also time to chill out, lay on your couch, and binge watch movies. This week on Indiecast, hosts Steven Hyden and Ian Cohen share their recommendations for the best music documentaries to check out (or to put on in the background while decorating your Christmas tree). Plus, they look back on iconic record label The Elephant 6, which was a home for bands like Neutral Milk Hotel and The Olivia Tremor Control. In terms of banter this week, Indiecast talks Twitter's still-uncertain future and how difficult it would be to hash out trends if the platform shut down completely. They also imagine kind of music they'd play if they had a college radio show (hint: it'd be pretty similar to Indiecast). The Recommendation Corner this week has Ian shouting out Drowse's Wane Into It, which is a mix of slowcore-country combined with Mount Eerie. Steven shouts out Weyes Blood's latest album And In The Darkness Hearts Aglow.New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday.
