Brian Dillon, one part of Meltybrains, released his second solo album under the moniker The Line on November 1, 2023. Entitled Red Blood Cells and Righteousness, it's an album full of collaborations, featuring Lullahush, Fehdah and Loah, Sarah Corcoran (Pillow Queens), Sorcha Richardson, Talos, God Knows and Murli, and lots more. On this episode, we talk through all the tracks on the album and discuss the making of it. Brian says: “This is an album built on personal relationships and communication, dedicated to playing a small but significant role as a part of a world so much bigger than any of us are willing to admit. After all, maybe we're all just blood cells, swimming through the veins of the earth, serving a much higher function.” On January 25 at The Horse Gallery, Dorset Street, Dublin, the exhibition White Blood Cells is opening, a sister piece to the album. A series of immersive soundscapes by Brian Dillon in collaboration with photographer Mark McGuinness. The audio-visual work explores the role and effect of supply chains in today's global world. From the press release: One of the key topics highlighted by the audio work is immigration and refuge. In 2024 global migration is taking place on a level never seen before. The work explores the West's reluctance to give shelter to people who have been driven from their homes due to economic factors which are heavily influenced by western consumer demands. If Dillon's soundscapes pose questions for the future of society, industry, and migration, McGuinness' images act as accompanying notes on our present. The images are all taken from the ongoing project, I Hope I'm Wrong, which documents the impact human activity is having on the environment. All of the images are taken in locations in Ireland which are predicted to be heavily impacted by sea level rise within the next decade. A live performance will take place on the opening night by a music group made up of migrants and asylum seekers. They will perform a short set of songs from their home countries at 6pm, Thursday 25th January 2024. Admission is free, and all are welcome to attend. You can buy Red Blood Cells and Righteousness at TheLine2.bandcamp.com

Joe studied acoustic design and has sat on the Programmatic Review panel for the Certificate, Diploma, and Masters courses in Music Technology at the Dundalk Institute of Technology. His understanding of live rooms and how to quickly manipulate acoustics allow him to capture sonics that bring out an artist's originality. Acoustics and recording are Joe's passions and live recording is Joe's specialty. A session with him is performance-driven, keeping creativity and individuality center stage, whilst also being productive and fun. “Collaboration to realize artistic visions” is what Hellfire Studio stands for to Joe. Producing for artists, working alongside engineers such as Rob Kirwan (Hozier, PJ Harvey), Ger Mc Donald (U2, Manic Street Preachers) and engineering for producer/composer Valgeir Sigurðsson ( Bjork, Feist, Sigur Rós) on Mary Couglans powerful “A Woman Undone” – has given him the insight and attention to detail to make great records and set the standard for Irish recording and production. We universally find ourselves turning to poetry during confusing times. There's something indescribable about the solace we can feel in knowing another human being has felt the feelings we carry with us throughout the day. This experience is what lead to the crafting of When I Rise Up, the next EP by my dear friend Sallay-Matu Garnett (aka Loah). Throughout the EP, Loah showcases her dynamic range as an instrumentalist as she sings the words of Langston Hughes, Georgia Douglas Johnson, Eva Gore-Booth, etc. Reminding us all how timeless these words remain to be as the world rebuilds itself in real-time. On today's podcast, we chat about the work that went into re-imagining these famous poems and the unexpected solace that poetry can provide in confusing times.

This is an idea I first saw/heard Music by Loah talk about - the hate scale. How small acts of racism add up to the maximum end of the scale where your life is in danger. I introduce the origins of European racism and American. The cultural experiences which allow us to absorb these; Alvin Ailey's Greenwood, Small Island by Andrea Levy, A Rasin in the sun by Lorrain Hansberry, Barracoon by Zora Neale Hurston, 12 years a slave. The writing of Alice Walker, Toni Morrison and James Baldwin. How it's not enough to just say you are not racist or anti-racist. That you don't have these assumptions - you have to take actions that allow the realties of others lives to change. #blacklivesmatter

This week, singer Sallay Matu Garnett ("Loah") joined Jarlath for a fascinating conversation about her life from Maynooth to Sierra Leone, the West End, New York and back to Ireland once more. Sallay speaks about her upbringing in Ireland before moving to her father's homeland of Sierra Leone in West Africa where she spent a number of years with her family. Having spent time in both Ireland and West Africa, Sallay gives a refreshing discussion on racism and Ireland's history with it. Sallay also discusses her incredible journey through The Artist's Way in New York that unlocked a lot for her artistically while also giving her thoughts on the danger of words and judgement on incomplete art. From a powerful discussion on how she came to truly understand the shame and guilt experienced by victims of sexual violence to the origins of Loah, how having a hyper-sensitive personality affects her life and her battle with deciding on a career in science or in music, this is a truly enlightening discussion with one of Ireland's brightest musical talents. To hear how Sallay suffered with imposter syndrome playing Mary Magdalene in Jesus Christ Superstar in the West End, the press about her which she didn't appreciate, her challenges having co-written on one of the most recognisable songs in modern pop history, how she has been meditating from a very young age and much more, become a patron of An Irishman Abroad for just the price of a pint on www.patreon.com/irishmanabroad. The size of the #BlackLivesMatter demonstration in Dublin at the weekend took some by surprise, but it shouldn't have. Musician Sallay Garnett, also known as Loah, who has recently spoken out about her experience of racism in Ireland on social media, joins Irish Times journalists Fintan O'Toole and Sorcha Pollak to talk about the source of the energy behind the protest and whether Ireland is embarking on a reckoning with its own racism. After that: Washington correspondent Suzanne Lynch on the political gamble Donald Trump is taking with his hardline approach to protests over the killing by police of unarmed black man George Floyd in Minneapolis.

Bob Gallagher has directed some of my favourite music videos of recent years for some of my favourite bands, including Pillow Queens, Villagers and Girl Band. He recently held his first solo photography exhibition at the Darkroom on North Brunswick Street in Dublin City. Entitled Forced Perspective, it was an experiment with an analogue photographic process and 3D stills. Acts featured included Wastefellow, Loah, TPM, Naoise Roo, Villagers, The Claque and Junior Brother. On April 18 at Dublin's Button Factory, Gallagher takes part in Under My Garage, a late-night 'talk show' featuring discussion, music and live visuals. "Now, for one night only, Gallagher invites you on a journey through his subconscious, transforming the Button Factory into the set of a fictional late night talk show to meet some of his closest collaborators, dissect his work, watch some never-before-seen footage and find out where the bodies are buried. Warning: it will be weird." It features Conor O'Brien (Villagers), Pillow Queens, Myles Manley, Cal Folger Day and Bryan Quinn, with more to be announced - and music from the Under My Garage House Band. Brid O'Donovan talked to Bob about his photography process for the Forced Perspective exhibition, how it came about, collaboration and what's next.
