For a generation who felt like outsiders in the late 2000s, the emo scene felt like the one place where they could belong—and make sense of the chaos inside, as their favorite artists began to express the pain they held within their hearts: As Bert McCracken of The Used once said, “Music is church, therapy, and philosophy all wrapped up into one.” And that's exactly what this scene became. From the explosive confessions of “Take It Away” to Panic! at the Disco pacing the church aisles in “I Write Sins Not Tragedies,” from Hayley Williams of Paramore shouting “The truth never set me free—so I'll do it myself” to My Chemical Romance singing revenge, resurrection, and spiritual crisis across Three Cheers—emo wasn't afraid to rip open the human heart and let everything spill out. But what was quickly learned was that many who saw this as therapy could also take it to a place of no return. After 13-year-old Hannah Bond chose to delete herself, emo became Public Enemy Number 1. In 2008, the Daily Mail fired the headline heard around the globe: “Why No Child Is Safe from the Sinister Cult of Emo.” Suddenly, a culture built for struggling youth was being shown as something dark and dangerous, with fans of the genre fighting against the current of their day attempting to drift people away from the emotional music of the generation. But now it's 2025; those late-2000s outsiders have grown up—and emo is rising again. My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy, Taking Back Sunday, Jimmy Eat World—the bands who shaped a generation are continuing to play shows, and their fans are right back in their black eyeliner and emotional armor. What was emo really preaching? Because these weren't just break-up anthems—they were songs about identity, guilt, rebellion, spiritual confusion, and the longing for something beyond the pain. What we want to look at is the controversy, the comeback, and the worldview behind the music that became a church, therapy, and philosophy for millions. We're a collective from a bunch of like outcast scenes that are like working together and now become a part of another scene that is accepting of all sorts of different kinds of music".We talk with the incredibly popular band The Home Team (known for hits like "Loud" and "Walk This World With Me") while at Vans Warped Tour. The band shares their thoughts on the collective, accepting nature of the Warped Tour scene, which they see as a place for all different types of bands. We get into their eclectic musical taste, which blends heavy riffs, pop-punk roots (like their enduring love for Fall Out Boy), and modern R&B influences, which they affectionately call "Sexy Rock". Finally, the band discusses the importance of giving back to the local DIY scene by offering opening slots, paying forward the opportunities they once received.Key Topics & Timestamps:The Home Team's incredible popularity and Warped Tour ExperienceThe most emo song the band is listening to right now (sad R&B and Fall Out Boy)Why The Home Team prioritizes local bands as openers on their sold-out tourThe importance of "paying it forward" in the scene (Shoutout to Skye from Issues)What makes The Home Team "emo" and embracing the outcast collectiveBlending brooding, emotional songs ("Walk This World With Me," "Somebody Else's Face") with heavy metal and R&B influencesDefining their sound as "Sexy Rock" and the influence of Justin TimberlakeWhere to find tickets for the few dates that still have availabilityGuest/Band Links:Spotify: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thehometeam/?hl=enOfficial Website: https://thrillerrecords.com/pages/the-home-teamTour Dates: https://www.thehometeammerch.com/pages/tour-1Episode Highlights:"We really want now that we're in this position to give people opportunity, even though all the shows are already sold out, like we don't need need more support.""You see a band doing something really cool and you want them to succeed. Help them out. If you can reach down and pull them up with you. Yeah. It's beautiful.""The thing that would make us the most emo in this case would definitely be the more brooding songs... Walk This World with me is one of my favorite songs we've ever written, and it's a ballad.""I grew up listening to a lot of R&B music and a lot of R&B music is very sexy. ECHO 23 joined Rockabilly Greg In the Flamingo Lounge on October 16, 2025. ECHO 23 is an attitude-fueled alternative rock band channeling the best of the '90s and '00s. They officially formed post-COVID in 2021 and began tearing up their home base, The 33 Speakeasy, in May 2022. The band's centerpiece is the fierce, young, lead singer Cassandra Warren, who uses her incredible voice and attitude to captivate every crowd. On the rhythm section, you'll find lifelong friends Charlie Forness on bass and Steve Wellenc on drums (who also manages the band). With the addition of CJ Ambrosia on guitar, the lineup for ECHO 23 is complete. What sets E23 apart is their unique setlist. With Cassandra's incredible vocal range, they crush songs by Paramore, Alanis Morissette, and Lady Gaga. They then instantly flip the script, bringing you bangers from Fall Out Boy and Panic! At The Disco—plus a side of Poison—making them one of the most eclectic and must-see bands in WNY!
Send us a textWhat do a classroom of kid rockers, a surfing penguin, and a keyblade have to do with a modern pop-rock band? We invited Arrows In Action to walk us through the five influences that actually shaped their sound and the world around their new record, “I Think I've Been Here Before.” The through-line isn't random; it's a map of how community, big melodies, and vivid, even unlikely, references can turn into songs that feel immediate and alive. We start with School of Rock as the north star for band life—joyful, scrappy, and possible—then move through first shows and first loves: Mayday Parade in a Florida parking lot and the earnest, high-voltage writing that stuck. Fall Out Boy anchors a craft lesson: melody first, lyrics bent to fit with conviction, and a fearless approach to range and runs learned on early morning walks. The conversation swerves to Surfs Up, a surprising but perfect fit; its sun-faded soundtrack and underdog heart seeped into the album's front half, right down to a track that syncs to the film's final surf sequence. And Kingdom Hearts adds scale and stakes—cinematic intros, friendship-as-compass themes, and little glints of “video game” texture that give their arrangements lift.We dig into how the band rebuilt in 2018, moved in together, wrote relentlessly, and designed this release as two cohesive halves with their own tones. They talk intentional choices—synth colors, vocal stacks, and tempos—that keep the record tight without losing contrast. There are tour stories, a drum kit disaster turned crowd moment, closer debates, and practical advice for any band trying to “do it for real”: keep improving the music, copy what works and make it yours, persist when numbers dip, and make sure it stays fun.If you love pop-punk, emo-adjacent hooks, and big-hearted songwriting, this one's for you. Hit play, stream “I Think I've Been Here Before,” and tell us which influence you hear first. And if you enjoyed the show, subscribe, share it with a friend, and leave a quick review—your support helps more listeners find the music and the stories behind it.Follow My Pop Five: @mypopfive on all platforms We'll see you next time. It's Jam's birthday! To find out the first song they selected, go to Paragraph 2 (P2). To skip ahead to the ranking music, go to P5. P2: It was "Yule Shoot Your Eye Out" by Fall Out Boy! For their second selection, they give Ian two options -- past or future. If you think he should choose "future", go to P3. If you prefer "past", go to P4. P3: Ian chose the same thing! And the song was, unfortunately, "Feels Like Christmas" by Panic! At the Disco. All that's left is learning the ranking music -- go to P5! P4: Oh no! Ian didn't choose this option. Also, you slipped on an icy patch and fell down a well. Oops!!! P5: The ranking music in this episode is "Yule Shoot Your Eye Out" as performed by Skatune Network. Yay, you did it!
Insights In Sound 190 Suzy Shinn, Producer/Engineer S19 E10 A phrase that comes to mind when talking with Suzy Shinn is "wise beyond her years." A multi-talented, intuitive artist, songwriter, producer and engineer, she's cranked out more work before the age of 30 than many artists have created in a lifetime, including landmark recordings with Weezer, Panic! at the Disco, Fallout Boy, Katy Perry, and dozens more. We caught up with her at her Treehouse Studio, a space as delightfully creative as its owner.
Toph leads the discussion and review of Fall Out Boy's 2008 album ‘Folie à Deux' – including, as always, albums + songs on our radar and much more! That's French, ya know. What it means? Tune in and find out. Is this their last good album? Tune in and find out. What was Yes' last good album? Tune in and find out. Did Patrick Stump make the worst solo album ever made? Tune in and find out. Would Nubs go see Wyonna Judd in concert? Tune in and find out. Is Wyonna Judd the dead one? Actually we still don't know. Are the Detroit Red Wings for real? That's another one we don't know but are hopeful. Did Howard The Duck sing his own theme song? Shucks we never checked on that. So c'mon, be there -- we got long song titles, puns, lots of post-emo energy...and did we mention the long song titles?

Ah the many faces of pop punk… Here on Encore we’ve explored a wide range of songs that fall under the genre’s umbrella; from the sounds of Green Day’s Rock-Opera-Political thriller American Idiot to SUM 41’s metal-worshipping, Jackass-inspired Fat Lip, to Avril Lavigne’s quirky and jealousy ridden hand-clapping Girlfriend - Pop Punk is a big ol’ tree with a whole lotta branches. In 2005, mainstream pop punk tied its wagon a lot closer to the traditional sounds of Rock N Roll, with heavy guitars and stadium-like bravado that kept the Rock-radio airwaves happy. Emo; the emotional side of pop-punk was usually relegated to the sounds of the underground. The ‘scene’ was filled with bands across North America that were a little pop, a little punk, a little goth, and honestly, a little twee. If you were a band having deep, overdramatic feelings about life, love, and fitting in, and treated music as if it was your own personal confessional for all of the above - that was fine - you’d probably find yourself a fanbase - but you certainly weren’t going to find yourself a hit. Coalescing with the rise of internet culture at the time - emo and screamo bands were massively popular on myspace - with filesharing doing a lot of the word of mouth heavy-lifting both virtually and in real life. In a time where everyone was making CD mixtapes - you could easily sneak a (legally or otherwise obtained) mp3 of your favourite emo band on a custom-curated disc - and it started to influence culture at large. While a ton of emo bands eventually broke through, perhaps the very first of their kind was Fall Out Boy - and while they started off like many other subculture sweethearts of the era - in just a few short years - they would become one of the hottest bands in the world. This is the Story of Fall Out Boy's Sugar We're Goin' Down Written by Clayton Taylor for iHeartRadio
Patrick Stump is no stranger to success. He's been the lead singer for Fall Out Boy for 24 years and just completed their latest tour. He's done voice acting and scored a number of film and television shows, but in our household he reigns supreme as the writer and performer of the theme song for Spidey and his amazing Friends on Disney Jr. He truly loves both the film and music world and happily chats about both in our conversation.

Fall Out Boy is a band from Chicago that formed in 2001. Their first album, Take This To Your Grave, was a hit, especially in the punk rock world. When they put out their second album, though, in 2005, that was on a whole other scale. That album is called From Under the Cork Tree, and it went double platinum, and they were nominated for a Grammy for Best New Artist. For this episode, I talked to the band's singer, Patrick Stump, about how they made their breakout hit from that album, the song “Sugar, We're Goin Down.” For more info, visit songexploder.net/fall-out-boy.
