Although its planning application remains live, and its latest objector is the great Tommy Tiernan(!), Fuinneamh Sceirde Teoranta's plans for a 450mw offshore windfarm off the coast of Clare and Galway is not going ahead. Corio, the company behind the development have halted the €1.4bn plans citing environmental challenges that and site investigations indicating the location meant the windfarm would not be resilient enough during an extreme weather event. The 30 proposed turbines were due to a have maximum tip height of 325m and were predicted to generate enough power for 350,000 homes along with a community benefit fund of €70m over the next 20 years. Specifically to Clare, works included grid connection cables at Doonbeg and an electrical compensation compound near Killimer. Kilrush Independent Councillor Ian Lynch has been reacting to the news, and he's been telling Clare FM's Daragh Dolan he's worried about the connotations this could have for other projects in Clare in the near future... To discuss this further, Alan Morrissey was joined by Donnbeg Fianna Fáil Councillor, Rita McInerney. Picture (c) thebroker via Canva

The composer and producer, and multi-instrumentalist Ólafur Arnalds met the Cork singer-songwriter Eoin French aka Talos after he ran a marathon in Iceland. A friendship was struck, that quickly developed into a musical partnership, as seen at Sounds From A Safe Harbour in Cork in 2023, when the festival director Mary Hickson put the pair together for a collaboration. Now six months after Eoin's death,  Arnalds and French's family, friends and collaborators have been celebrating the artist's creativity and legacy with the stunning song they wrote together 'We Didn't Know We Were Ready'. The song was performed on The Tommy Tiernan show on RTÉ in January under Arnalds' Opia community banner with vocals from Niamh Regan, Ye Vagabonds, JFDR, The Staves, Sandrayati Fay, Dermot Kennedy, Laoise Leahy, Memorial, Christof Van Der Ven and most poignantly of all, Eoin's wife Steph French. In our chat with Ólafur today, he recounts meeting Eoin, their creative time spent together and the instructions he received from Eoin before he died to finish the record they made together, which will be released later this year.   * Support Nialler9 on Patreon, get event discounts, playlists, ad-free episodes and join our Discord community Songs referenced on the Nialler9 Podcast Spotify Playlist   Listen on Apple | Android | ACAST | Patreon | Pocketcasts | CastBox | Stitcher | Spotify | RSS Feed | Pod.Link

In advance of International Fraud Awareness Week, research commissioned by the Bank of Ireland has shown that 90% of the population believes fraud is a big problem in Irish society, with fake online purchase scams being the most common way for consumers to lose money. One-third of those surveyed said they had been targeted by a fraudulent advert on a social media platform. When these respondents were asked to identify the platform, 65% identified Facebook, 28% identified Instagram, with X at 13%, TikTok at 11%, and Snapchat at 4%. In addition, almost half (47%) of citizens aged 18+ have seen adverts for investments or cryptocurrency on a social media platform featuring a well-known personality, politician or musician. The impersonation of well-known people and media organisations is a tactic used regularly in fraudulent ads to trick consumers into fake crypto investments, bond purchases, or savings products. This can include impersonation of individuals such as President Michael D. Higgins, An Taoiseach Simon Harris, An Tánaiste Micheal Martin, former Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, Denis O'Brien, Dáithí Ó Sé, Brian Dowling and Tommy Tiernan. Adverts can also include links to fake websites impersonating RTE, the Irish Independent, Forbes, The Irish News, BBC News, the Irish Mirror, and many others. Nicola Sadlier, Head of Fraud, Bank of Ireland, said: "Fraudulent adverts are a blight on social media platforms. These adverts are all about one thing - the theft of money from consumers and businesses by criminals. They cause harm to people, the financial services system, and the economy. "Much more needs to be done. One common sense step would be to ensure that online platforms check that adverts are from companies that are regulated to sell financial products and services. The current approach, which is allowing fraudsters run fake ads that impersonate celebrities, politicians, and legitimate media organisations - all with the aim of stealing money - is clearly broken. "That's why Bank of Ireland is calling for legislative change at European Union level so that online platforms will have to verify that advertisers of financial services are regulated to sell those services." Findings from the Red C poll among the Irish general public include: Fake advertisements were most commonly seen on Facebook and Instagram followed by Twitter/X (13%), TikTok (11%) and Snapchat (4%). The majority of people (66%) report fraud to their bank, followed by the Gardai (17%) When asked to select all parties they believe are responsible for protecting people from fraud in Ireland, 66% selected Banks and Financial Services companies, along with the Gardai (51%), mobile phone (39%) and social media companies (39%). 60% of the population believe they themselves have a role. The research was conducted as part of an ongoing campaign to raise awareness among Bank of Ireland customers and the general public around the danger of fraud to their personal finances and how to safeguard against the main causes of fraud. Deirdre's prepping for Richard Osman's House of Games this week, and the imminent flight to the UK brings back lots of memories of her 10 years living in London.  Emma lets us on in on her strategy for dealing with social media trolls, and why she really should have been a private investigator.  Deirdre gives us the low down on her interview with Tommy Tiernan and on wrapping her latest movie, Fran the Man.  As if that wasn't enough showbiz, there's a story about 50 Cent, yes, you read that right.  Enjoy! This episode contains explicit language and adult themes.  This Podcast is part of the Headstuff Network. Find out more at HeadStuffPodcasts.com This Podcast is sponsored by Key For Her. There isn't a single purl in the project, and the eyelets are easy to work. Many of you will only need to reference the pattern occasionally once you understand the basic increases and increase repeats. I designed this to take along on a European vacation. I wanted something with a bit of interest, but that wouldn't be too large, wouldn't require too much brain space and that wouldn't work up too quickly (as smaller travel projects tend to do). - Note - This pattern has already been Tech Edited & Test Knit, so it should be smooth sailing!   On a Happy Note I went to see Irish comedian Tommy Tiernan with Megg, Tom & Matt. Seeing my 11 year old niece perform in Matilda. Zach's 1st birthday dinner. Riley got 2 awards in her last dance competition of the season!   Quote of the Week Do not look back.
