Claire Darmody speaks to Anne Staunton, CEO of Rainbows Ireland, about their service of peer support that they offer to children who have been bereaved. Anne explains what they have observed with their work with children who have been bereaved by suicide, and exactly how Rainbows groups work. She speaks about how children can grieve very differently to adults. Anne also shares some work and research Rainbows are doing with the national office for suicide prevention. You can find a Rainbows group and more information at https://rainbowsireland.ie/.Anne also mentions a book called Safe Harbour, a new and free illustrated story book ‘Safe Harbour' that will support children who have been bereaved by suicide; it is now available to download or order at https://about.hse.ie/news/safe-harbour-a-new-free-illustrated-story-book-for-children-bereaved-by-suicide/.The Losing a Parent to Suicide series on the Pat Kenny Show is supported by the Rosalynn Carter Fellowship for Mental Health Journalism in Ireland, in partnership with Shine and Produced by Pat Kenny Show Senior Producer and one of this year's fellows, Claire Darmody.
Matthew Xavier Corrigan, an artist who splits time between Cork and Dublin, released his debut solo album Beast of Changing on March 21. Written in reflection of a tempestuous season of change across Irish coastlines, centred on Ballinskelligs in Co. Kerry, Myrtleville in Co. Cork and Clare Island in Co. Mayo, Beast of Changing follows a story of growth, of love lost and found, of crossing the threshold into dark, cold, saline water - of surrender. Themes of environmentalism and how we shape the coasts, of erosion and rising water, are woven throughout. Matthew Xavier Corrigan's debut album was cut to tape with a single collaborator, Mike Halls, over five days in Liverpool, the product of years of writing rendered in a few day's takes. After pushing to a more intimate and organic sound on the From ten, with love EP, the artist now goes deeper; covered in analog warmth and rich harmonies, delicately performed, taking inspiration from the likes of Andy Shauf, Bill Callahan and Robin Pecknold. This renewed focus on analog warmth even comes out in the imagery; the press photos and album/single artwork were captured on expired film by Ronan Burke on vintage film cameras. Matthew talks about his former project Ghostking is Dead, why that came to an end, the Cork scene and working on festivals such as his own River Runs Round, Quarter Block Party, Quiet Lights and Sounds from a Safe Harbour, the story behind Beast of Changing, and lots more. When we hear the word suicide, many of us instinctively recoil. The word is taboo in everyday life. For family members who have lost somebody to suicide, this stigma can make grieving even more complex. People may struggle to explain the loss and how they feel about it to friends, colleagues, and other family members. But how do you explain suicide to a young child? What words should you use? How do you support them? In June 2024, Ireland's National Office for Suicide Prevention published an illustrated children's book called Safe Harbour, to help parents and carers talk to children bereaved by suicide. The book, written by Patricia Ford and illustrated by Bronna Lee, encapsulates much of what suicide bereavement is about, navigating a world that is both completely new and oddly normal. For this episode of Health in Europe, we are looking at suicide bereavement with Safe Harbour as our compass.DOWNLOAD SAFE HARBOUR:You can download the book and its resources at https://www.childhoodbereavement.ie/safeharbour PLEASE NOTE:This episode of Health in Europe covers the theme of suicide and contains an account of suicide bereavement.
Follow Christa Couture on FacebookChrista Couture's Book - How to Lose Everything: A MemoirChrista Couture has come to know every corner of grief—its shifting blurry edges, its traps, its pulse of love at the centre and the bittersweet truth that sorrow is a powerful and wise emotion. From the amputation of her leg as a cure for bone cancer at a young age to her first child's single day of life, the heart transplant and subsequent death of her second child, the divorce born of grief and then the thyroidectomy that threatened her career as a professional musician, How to Lose Everything delves into the heart of loss. Couture bears witness to the shift in perspective that comes with loss, and how it can deepen compassion for others, expand understanding, inspire a letting go of little things and plant a deeper feeling for what matters. She is also proudly Indigenous (mixed Cree and Scandinavian), queer, disabled, and a mom.Over the course of her acclaimed career, Christa has become known, unenviably, as an expert in loss: singing, speaking and writing about the childhood cancer that led to the amputation of her left leg, abortion, and the tragic deaths of her two infant sons. When it came time to make her fourth album, 2016's eclectic, upbeat and twangy Long Time Leaving, a more run-of-the-mill loss, divorce, provided inspiration. Those years of loss are revisited in her debut non-fiction book How To Lose Everything, published September 2020 by Douglas & McIntyre. But Christa's most recent recording Safe Harbour tells a different story. Safe Harbour's six songs were written during a thankfully tragedy-free, joyful time in Christa's life that saw her leave Vancouver, her home of 17 years, and relocate to Toronto to start anew. During this time, Christa took a step back from recording and performing music to write her memoir, take on a daytime radio host job, and welcome a third child.Content: Grief, Loss, Death of close relations including children, Amputation, Cancer, Birth, Adoption, and Adoption trauma, Disability and combating ableism, Anger, Therapy, Gratitude, Struggling with hating parts of ourselves, “Holding the Complexity,” Divorce, Memoir, Grief symptoms (and a critique of the “5 stages”), allowing space for all kinds of feelings, challenging binary thinking, sorrow, numbness, Survivorship, Luck, Sadness, public versus private experiences, moving, patience, the pandemic, growing around our grief, and becoming “okay.” Thank you to our guest, Christa Couture and to Michael Ayotte at the National Music Centre in Calgary, for recording the episode.Thank you, also, to our team, Sound Designer, Audio Engineer and Editor Greyson Gritt of Minotan Music Inc. and Producer Krystal Strong of Osum Artist Management. Mit diesen, zumeist als Safe-Harbour bezeichneten Erleichterungen, befassen sich Dr. Andreas S. Bolik und Eva Stauske in der neuen Episode des EY Tax & Law Hörfunk Podcast - Steuern pur. The goal is to provide accommodation and integration support for our guests for as long as is necessary. They will be treated with dignity and respect. This is a community based project with support from Cronin's Coaches, Dennehy Commercials, and the enormous goodwill of the Irish people. The bus is leaving on St Patrick's Day and will return approximately five days later. We are relying 100% on the goodwill of people in Ireland to make this happen. If you can help, especially by providing shelter in your home we'd love to hear from you. If you can't provide shelter we have a list of urgently needed supplies below. In the coming days we will launch a GoFundMe page so you can make a cash donation. Our GoFundMe page is here. Jamil talks to Irish software entrepreneur John Dennehy to learn more about this important initiative. This project has been launched with the goal of making an immediate and timely action to help in Ukraine. See more on the Safe HarThis positive and practical initiative has been launched with the goal of making an immediate and timely action to help in Ukraine. See more on the Safe Harbour for Ukraine website here and on the gofundme page here.bour for Ukraine website here and on the gofundme page here. Safe Harbour for Ukraine A group of friends in Ireland are sending a bus filled with essential supplies to the Polish/Ukraine border and are returning with 40 women and children displaced by war. OFFERING ACCOMMODATION Finding suitable accommodation for our guests is the most challenging part. Your help would be greatly appreciated. You might have a spare bedroom you can offer, or even an entire property that's not fully used. Right now we're looking for properties in Cork and Limerick city, preferably within walking distance of shops and a bus route. It's a big thing to offer a room in your home. Most of our guests do not have fluent, or even any, English. They've all been through a horrific experience. None of us know how long this war will go on for but we would ask that if you are making a commitment it is for at least three months. If you feel you could help, please fill out the form by clicking here DONATING ESSENTIAL SUPPLIES Refugees arriving at the Polish/Ukrainian border are tired, hungry and many are sick. We are providing supplies to those who have managed to cross the border and make it safely into Poland. If you can help we would greatly appreciate it. Please pack goods ideally into cardboard boxes or transparent plastic bags, label them, and deliver them to us at Cronin's Coaches in Cork (Eircode: T23 A0CX), or Dennehy Motors in Limerick (V94 FYY6).
Like many others in Australia who are concerned about the plight of refugees I was happy to read that the town of Toowoomba welcomed the very first family to arrive from Sudan with open arms. I could only imagine at the difficulty they had adjusting to life in Australia, but hoped they would find new peaceful lives here. But we have all come to learn that the scars and trauma from growing up in a war torn country can follow people to their new land, and some have difficulty coping with this. As Ayik Chut says himself in this interview, he was fine for the first year here and then things began to unravel for him as the horrors of his time as a child soldier in the Sudanese Army began to catch up with him. He covers a little in this interview of what transpired but the most amazing part of his story we didn't get to in the interview- that of his career in film and TV! Ayik has worked alongside stars such as Chris Hemsworth and Idris Elba, and appeared in a number of TV series such as ‘Safe Harbour' . He is now the father of two children and a proud Australian.
