Acclaimed singer-songwriter Lisa Hannigan is also part of the All we Have are Days festival. She will be on tonight (Friday) on stage with actor Ruth Negga and author Sinéad Gleeson.
Gemma Hayes, from Tipperary and now living in West Cork, released her sixth studio album Blind Faith on September 27. It's her first album in 10 years - Gemma says she has reasons for the break: she simply lost the urge to write and was busy raising two children. We talk about all that - how she literally locked away her guitars and subsequently lost confidence in her ability to make music - in this interview. Produced by Hayes with Karl Odlum, David Odlum and Brian Casey from Wavefield Recording Studio in Clonakilty, Blind Faith features Lisa Hannigan on backing vocals on ‘Eye For An Eye' and ‘Feed The Flames', which she also co-wrote, while Paul Noonan duets with Gemma on ‘Another Love'. --- From the press release: The youngest of eight children raised in the small village of Ballyporeen, Co Tipperary, Gemma Hayes' introduced herself to the world with her 2002 debut Night On My Side. With its deft production, ambitious arrangements and Hayes' dreamy, rock-leaning vocal delivery, the album was a critical and commercial success and was nominated for the Mercury Prize (now known as the Choice Music Prize). Since then, she has released four critically acclaimed studio albums and a limited-edition live album, while her music is constantly in demand for film and TV placements. Her version of Chris Isaak's 'Wicked Game', recorded for the US TV series Pretty Little Liars, now has over 24 million streams on Spotify alone, while she recently contributed to the soundtrack of the film adaptation of Roddy Doyle's Greyhound of a Girl. Bill Shanley is a guitarist from Clonakilty, West Cork, who has played and made music with, among others, Gilbert O'Sullivan, Ray Davies, Mary Black, Eleanor McEvoy, and Paul Brady. He got lessons with Noel Redding of the Jimi Hendrix Experience as a youngster and ever since has had a fascinating career. We talk though as much of that career as we can - spoiler alert: it features the London 2012 Olympics opening ceremony - in this interview recorded at Clonakilty International Guitar Festival 2023. Clonakilty International Guitar Festival returns September 19-22, 2024 around the town. For more, see Clonguitarfest.com On Garinish Island, West Cork, on September 20-22, Crosstown Drift is taking place. There will be free-to-attend walking tours as well as seated events with writers, poets, musicians and cultural creatives. Cormac Begley and Lisa Hannigan are playing evening concerts on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. I'll be chatting to various writers over the weekend including Toner Quinn from the Journal of Music, about his book, What Ireland Can Teach the World About Music. The Irish composer, instrumentalist and songstress influences modern folk with her interesting music.
Originally from Devon, the English singer-songwriter John Smith got his start playing bars and clubs in Liverpool, both with his own songs and as a side player for artists like Lianne La Havas, Lisa Hannigan and David Gray. Growing up with folk music and guitar music influences from Eric Clapton to Maria Callas to Nick Drake, John's sensitivity as a player is one of the cornerstones of his music, especially when it comes to his live music. It's earned him a passionate fanbase ever since his first EP release in 2009. I (lizzie) got to witness the connection he shares with audiences on a recent month-long tour around the UK. Everywhere we went, audience members had stories of how important John's songs were to them, and guitar nerds flocked to have a look at his pedal board.Beyond his musicianship, John's music is imbued with an earnestness that invites listeners to look around and feel gratitude: for nature (especially the vistas of rural England), for the wisdom that memory can provide, and for the people close to us. John's latest album, ‘The Living Kind,' is a meditation on how delicate love and life can be, but also how enduring. It also showcases the creative partnership between Smith and his longtime friend and roots music industry icon Joe Henry. One of the album's highlights is “Milestones,” in which John reflects on how parenthood has changed his perspective on the artist's life.Follow Basic Folk on social media: https://basicfolk.bio.link/ Sign up for Basic Folk's newsletter: https://bit.ly/basicfolknews Help produce Basic Folk by contributing: https://basicfolk.com/donate/ Interested in sponsoring us? This episode will explore the ways social protection has evolved in Pacific Island countries, starting with provident funds to the slow growth of lifecycle schemes for the elderly and people with disabilities. It will then look at how the COVID-19 crisis and the impacts of disasters and climate change have changed the way Pacific nations are thinking about social protection. This episode will ask, how do governments see the social protection landscape evolving in the future? Will countries continue to take a slow and gradual approach, focused on incremental growth of lifecycle schemes? Or has the growing interest from development partners and the growing pressures of climate change shifted priorities and approaches? This marks the inaugural episode of a three-part series focusing on emerging trends for Social Protection in the Indo-Pacific, presented by socialprotection.org. We extend our gratitude to the Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) for their invaluable support in shaping this series and facilitating connections with the most suitable guests for each episode. Meet our guests: Veremo Muria, Director, Fiji's Department of Social Welfare (MWCSP) Shirin Gul, Technical Specialist for Social Protection, Kiribati's Ministry of Women, Youth, Sports and Social Affairs (MWYSSA) Karishma Houda, Team Leader, Partnerships for Social Protection (P4SP) For our Quick Wins segment, we are joined by Lisa Hannigan, Senior Social Protection Specialist, Australian Government/Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT). Lisa discusses the significance of dignity in social protection, drawing from discussions and publications on the subject. Quick Wins Publication | Crowding-out or crowding-in? It feels so fitting to me that we get to kiss season 5 goodbye with a friend of mine from Ireland, the incredibly talented Eoin French (aka Talos). A supremely talented individual, Talos has achieved international acclaim by creating these soundscapes that transport you elsewhere. Brilliant at experimenting with various electronic textures, beats and arrangements, it's wild how he's figured out this sweet spot between being abstract and direct with his music. A major theme of his music is embellishing contrasts, which he's done so effectively on his latest body of work, Dear Chaos (which is out now). Naturally we chat about his works, but a lot of this episode centers around how personal art is by it's very nature. Eoin is someone who deeply cares about the human condition, and with that he evokes so much of what this series is about; how we can learn about ourselves by trying to learn about those around us. In Eoin's case, Dear Chaos is a body of work that was born in solitude but fostered by collaboration (including a mutual old friend of ours, the legendary Lisa Hannigan). Season 6 of the podcast will be coming at ya May 2023, BUT don't worry, there'll be some special (and wildly different) bonus episodes coming February 2023. Be sure to subscribe so you don't miss out (especially on Spotify).

The Irish music community mourns the loss of two great musicians. Earlier this week, while touring New Orleans, Irish American and Chicago South Sider, Marty Sammon, passed away at the young age of 45, a day after his birthday. With grandparents on both sides hailing from Ireland, Marty embraced his Irish roots learning Irish polkas and reels on the piano but migrated towards his true love of the blues. At an early age, Marty's parents realized his immense talent and Marty began performing for many blues greats. In addition to releasing his own solo album recorded live at the Kingston Mines in Chicago, Marty was the keyboardist for guitar blues legend, Buddy Guy. Marty passed away the morning after performing his last show at the Maple Leaf in New Orleans, a city he loved almost as much as Chicago.Barry Mohan, guitarist and singer from the group, All Folk'd Up, died tragically in a an auto accident in Ireland earlier this week. Barry was in the prime of his career and left us at a very young age of 28 years. We feature new music from Brona McVittle, The Mary Wallops, Niamh Dunne, Character Fleadh, Dublin Irish Trio, Rufus Nightjar, Lyra, Lisa Hannigan and a new release from Murphy's Lawyer. It's all right here on Windy City Irish Radio. Tune in live on globalirishradio.com or tune in on 750AM WNDZ Chicago.

Dáithí grew up in the heartland of Irish traditional music in Co.Clare, he was playing the fiddle by the age of six and his grandfather was the legendary concertina player Chris Dorney, but while his music draws on that well, and his own sense of place, his artistry is shaped by digital tools. He had a viral hit 'Mary Keane's Introduction' (2015) sampling an audio recording of his grandmother talking about her young days and how she fell in love. His work is highly original, sound-rich and evocative, and his side hustle is a collaboration with BellX1 singer Paul Noonan as the band 'House Plants'. This week joining our new Awesome host and Filmmaker Mia Mullarkey for a very special chat is Filmmaker Myles O'Reilly. Fni Wrapchat is mixed by Bedford, Produced by the Headstuff Podcast Network and Sponsored by Film Equipment hire and Wildcard Distribution. Myles O'Reilly is a musician, composer and filmmaker from Dublin, Ireland. Since first lifting a camera in 2010, multi tasking O'Reilly has filmed, directed and edited over 100 music video promo's and 20+ music documentaries of Irish musicians at home and abroad, some of which include Glen Hansard, Villagers, Imelda May, Lisa O'Neill, Ye Vagabonds, Sinead O'Connor and Lisa Hannigan alongside other International artists such as Hollywood sound track virtuoso Ernst Reijseger, Icelandic artists Soléy, Múm and Amiina, US soul phenomenon Janelle Monae and UK folk trio The Staves. Early life as a working musician began for Myles in 2003 with the band Juno Falls. Signed for two albums by Sony UK and then V2 records, Juno Falls disbanded in 2010. Ten years later and in a global pandemic lockdown, Myles returned to making music and has since composed, recorded and released a plethora of works in the ‘ambient' music genre under the moniker Indistinct chatter. Since beginning a Pateron account in 2018 enabling followers to fund his film projects, O'Reilly's camera lens is increasingly more focused on discovering and supporting little-known emerging artists, to help “represent some of the most talented but hard to pigeonhole musical visionaries in Ireland today”. Now almost a full time vocation, his efforts to seek out and endorse new music extends to the curation of an annual rising-artist stage at the renown Body&Soul festival, and the production of a critically acclaimed web series This Ain't No Disco, co-created with eminent Irish broadcaster Donal Dineen of ‘No Disco' fame.
