In this week's Scotland Outdoors episode, Mark meets Tim Simons of Scotways to learn more about the history of outdoor access in Scotland.Celebrations were held last month to mark the 60th anniversary of the Forth Road Bridge and honour the structure, which at the time of construction was one of the longest in the world. Recently, Rachel was invited to view it from a slightly different angle on a Forth Boat Tours trip with Alastair Baird as her guide. To mark 40 years since they took over the running of Fyvie Castle, the National Trust for Scotland has appointed Architects to develop a masterplan for the castle and its 123 acres of landscaped grounds and gardens which will inform future investment in conservation, storytelling, engagement and enhanced visitor facilities. Mark visited the castle to find out more from project director Annie Robertson and community engagement officer Sarah Eggleton. The first-ever Glasgow Tree Hugging Tournament is coming to Dams to Darnley Country Park on Sunday, October 6th. This unique and joyful family-friendly event promises an afternoon of fun, connection, and celebration of the natural world. Co-founder Shuna Mercer joins Mark and Rachel live to tell us more.Following the tree hugging discussion, Mark revisits his favourite tree, the Ash tree.Returning to the Forth Road Bridge, Rachel was lucky enough to head out on the water not only to view the bridges from below, but also to spot some of the fantastic wildlife in the area. Guide Alastair Baird is also a nature enthusiast who talked her through the rich variety of birdlife and mammals people have spotted from the boat. The spectacular Enchanted Forest light and sound show is back in Faskally Woods in Pitlochry for the next month, and this year the theme is symphony of nature. Rachel joins Karen Bothwell, chair of the Enchanted Forest Community Trust, on the opening night to find out more about this fascinating show.

Discover the extraordinary secrets of an incredible coastline to the East of Edinburgh in the County of EAST LOTHIAN. It is an area of regal beauty with golden sandy beaches, medieval castles, the largest concentration of championship links golf courses in the world, gourmet restaurants and fabulous coastal and upland walks. In this first Episode, we start in the town of Musselburgh where the Romans left their mark in the first century, to Carbery Hill, the battleground where Mary Queen of Scots lost her Crown. We will see the site of the battle of Prestonpans and hear the true story of how the battle unfolded from Dr Arran Johnston, the Director of Scottish Battlefields. We will pass through Longniddry and hear about Gosford House, a fabulous mansion in the centre of a 5000 acre estate. Then, onto my own village of Aberlady, where Robert Clark, the General Manager of the newly refurbished boutique hotel, the Leddie, will give us his take on the area. From there to the wonderful village of Gullane, voted one of the best places to live in the United Kingdom. With lovely restaurants, cafes, art galleries, ice cream parlours, three golf courses and a wonderful mile-long golden sandy beach, what is there not to love. Then onto our final destination of Dirleton with it's own golden sands and a medieval castle right in the middle of the village.  At the end of the Podcasts, you will hear from a young lady, Lisa Gillen, who surprised John at Culloden Battlefield and also two of John's guests, who were just coming to the end of their tour, to get their take on Scotland.

In the past month, the RNLI lifeboat from Kinghorn has been called out to Portobello-Joppa Bay a number of times; but the crews have found themselves sent across here more this year than usual. In part, it’s the result of more people taking to the water – such as open-water swimming, paddle boarding and kayaking amongst other individual activities. In the past, there have been fund raising events for the lifeboats run for instance by the Portobello Sailing and Kayaking Club and Row Porty, but clearly none of that could take place this year; and as we’ll hear, the RNLI is suffering a shortfall of funds from the public. Porty Podcast Producer David Calder spoke to members of the Kinghorn crew via Zoom. For the Christmas Appeal, click here: rnli.org/Christmas For the local Scottish campaign click here:https://www.justgiving.com/campaign/RNLIScotland2020 Funds donated here will be restricted to going towards Scottish Lifeboat station running costs. Anyone from Portobello interested in getting involved in supporting the RNLI in 2021 should contact erin_feeney@rnli.org.uk for more info.

Edinburgh has 27km of coastline from Port Edgar to Joppa. Other cities around the world have made the most of having such a sea front – Edinburgh, for the most part, hasn’t. You can’t walk or cycle the coast from end to end. Instead, large areas are blocked off by industrial buildings, some dating back centuries. But change is slowly taking place. There’s a growing appreciation of the important role of the shoreline habitat. And now, a year-long project, under the guidance of the Royal Botanic Gardens, is bringing together schools, community groups and individuals to join together and work to regenerate natural habitats along the Forth. We joined a group from Portobello at the Seafield end of the Prom. Anyone who would like to get involved in any way can contact Charlotte Johnson at cjohnson@rbge.org.uk

We begin by describing what Fife is: it's a kingdom just North of the Firth of Fife. We're not making this up. How do you become a king, anyway? If you've been just waiting around for a leader, and are happy for one of us to rule as a king, let us know by email (maskedman@limitedappeal.net). Anyway, in Sportage, Luc describes his outing on something called a chainwalk in Fife, and how it made him late for the recording because he was waiting for fish. It's a long and complicated story, and as always, it's improved by Google Images. This time, play along and we promise not to burn your eyes with disgusting images, if only because we get distracted by Warren's misuse of language. Finally, why is night vision green? Brace yourself for our answer. Theme music courtesy of General Patton vs. The X-Ecutioners and Ipecac Recordings.
