Send us Fan MailIt's a celebration 250 years in the making. In this festive edition of the Potholes & Politics podcast, hosts Rebecca Lambert and Amanda Campbell shine a spotlight on how municipalities around Maine are marking this milestone quarter-millennial anniversary.
With the 160th observance of Juneteenth, the United States enters the two-week corridor between the largest Black liberation ritual directly connected to global rituals of African self-determination and the country's nativist Semi-quincentennial Fourth of July celebration ritual. In a country entangled in a war of choice, this week marked a gauche white nationalist White House lawn brawlfest, the opening of the Obama Presidential Center, the continuing celebrations and tensions surrounding soccer's North America-hosted World Cup, and the multinational New York Knicks Basketball Championship Parade and Ceremony. Alongside these rituals, a proliferation of Juneteenth Emancipation Day/Jubilee commemorative events is taking place. This unique convergence raises questions of Governance, Cultural Meaning-Making and Movement and Memory in the context of US and global Social Structures on the brink of renegotiations. Ritual moments are public narratives that reveal various values while often threatening to flatten looming realities. The space between Juneteenth and July 4 allows us to also consider spaces between facts and wishes, remembrances and aspirations. Are you a member of Knarrative? The Declaration of Independence infamously contains the phrase, “merciless Indian savages”, an indication of just where Native Americans fit into this year's celebration of the founding document's 250th anniversary celebrations. For much of that time, the federal government, colonial historians, and the general public have fetishized a version of Native culture, all while working to extinguish that culture from continued existence. Acclaimed Cherokee journalist Rebecca Nagle takes on the semiquincentennial from the Native perspective in her new six-part podcast, “First America“. Nagle is also the creator of the podcast, “This Land”, which earned a Peabody Award nomination and won the 2020 American Mosaic Journalism Prize, and she wrote the national best-selling book, “By the Fire We Carry”. We'll hear from Nagle and some of the historians and academics who provided insights on the Native influences on early democracy and the uneasy balance between Native people and America ever since. GUESTS Rebecca Nagle (Cherokee), creator and host of the “First America” podcast; author of “By the Fire We Carry: The Generations-Long Fight for Justice on Native Land”; and creator of “This Land” podcast Philip Deloria (Yankton Dakota), professor of history at Harvard University Dr. Nick Estes (Lower Brule Sioux Tribe), associate professor of American Indian Studies at the University of Minnesota

What's that feeling in the air? It's patriotism! We're celebrating 250 years of whatever this is the way our wacky founding fathers would have wanted—turning the reflecting pool green, wrapping the Kennedy Center in a tarp, and having a cage match on the White House lawn. But it's not even our nation's birthday yet! It's just a Big Boy's Birthday and we're getting some fun in early to celebrate our favorite guy. Algae, coverups, and blood spit. Hooray! To celebrate at home, Maureen cleaned some fans and made soup. She's smiling at Dan, which is making Dan nervous. There is no need to be nervous, Dan. Friends of the Rosary,Today is the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, known as Corpus Christi, a feast honoring the Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist. It emphasizes the joy of the Eucharist, traditionally celebrated on the Thursday after Trinity SundayThe feast dates back to the 13th century. It was instituted following the Eucharistic visions of St. Juliana of Liège in Belgium and the Eucharistic miracle of Bolsena, Italy, where a consecrated host reportedly began bleeding.Pope Urban IV extended this celebration to the universal Church in 1264 and commissioned the renowned theologian St. Thomas Aquinas to compose special hymns and prayers for the feast day, including the Tantum Ergo and O Salutaris Hostia. The significance of the feast is clear. While Holy Thursday recalls the institution of the Eucharist at the start of the Passion, the Corpus Christi provides a dedicated, joyful occasion for the Church to focus solely on adoration, thanksgiving, and belief in transubstantiation. We celebrate this day with Eucharistic Processions. The Blessed Sacrament is placed in a monstrance and carried through the streets by the clergy, with the faithful walking alongside, praying, and singing. Celebrations often include solemn Exposition and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. For Catholics, the procession serves as a public declaration of faith and a visible reminder that Christ is with them in their daily lives. We rejoice in this expression of our Eucharistic faith and devotion in order to deepen our attachment to the unique event that transforms our lives: the Blessed Sacrament.[embed]https://youtu.be/WV7WQbdajJo?si=zhAVQj4tp1_AlJaJ[/embed][embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-5Xi-Brli0g[/embed]Ave Maria!Come, Holy Spirit, come!To Jesus through Mary! Here I am, Lord; I come to do your will. Please give us the grace to respond with joy!+ Mikel Amigot w/ María Blanca | RosaryNetwork.com, New YorkEnhance your faith with the new Holy Rosary University app:Apple iOS | New!
