We started to record an intro for future rereleases (but not re-releases of future episodes). Then we got distracted. How did you rewind before tapes? How many fists big were these tubes? And where did you put all them? Also, John feels like generative AI is copying us: if you provide a completely made-up idiom, apparently AIs will make up a convincing backstory. But that's our gig, isn't it? That and serial re-dis-expectation meeting. Anyway, Gemini, we're onto you. Stay out of our lane! If you have a recording of the sound of tubes rewinding, email us (maskedman@limitedappeal.net). Theme music courtesy of General Patton vs. The X-Ecutioners and Ipecac Recordings.
Send us a textIf you're looking for a sonic palette cleanser from the mundane, Venamoris' new album To Cross or To Burn is the aural experience you didn't know you needed. Out now via Ipecac Recordings, the album is a seductive, shadowy, and soul-baring effort from the duo of Paula and Dave Lombardo. Yes, that Dave Lombardo—drum god behind Slayer, Mr. Bungle, Misfits, Dead Cross and countless other boundary-pushing projects. But this isn't thrash, metal, or hardcore. Instead, it's something far more intimate and atmospheric—part gothic lullaby, part cinematic fever dream, and entirely its own thing.Think: a darker, stranger Portishead raised on vintage synthesizers and heartbreak. And you're only halfway there.Venamoris, a name derived from the Latin vena amoris ("vein of love"), is a reflection of the real-life partnership between Dave and Paula Lombardo. The musical bond they've cultivated runs just as deep. Paula's roots include everything from backing up Las Vegas legends like Wayne Newton to chasing a singer-songwriter dream in Nashville. With this project, she brings a magnetic presence—equal parts elegance and eerie introspection—on vocals, piano, and synths. Every lyric feels lived-in; every melody, emotionally raw.Engineered and produced by Dave Lombardo, mixed by David A. Lombardo, and mastered by the acclaimed Golden Mastering team, To Cross or To Burn shimmers with sonic depth. Every note and nuance is deliberate, yet full of danger. The Lombardos handle all instrumentation themselves, with Paula on vocals and synths and Dave handling drums, guitars, and more. The album also features contributions from a formidable group of guest musicians, including:Trevor Dunn (Mr. Bungle, Tomahawk) – contrabass on “Stay With Me”Ra Diaz (Suicidal Tendencies, KORN) – bass on “Stain of Pain”Alex Skolnick (Testament) – guitar on “Stain of Pain” and “Burnt Paper”Gary Holt (Slayer, Exodus) – guitar on “Animal Magnetism”Each guest adds a unique brushstroke to the darkly emotional soundscape, enhancing but never overshadowing the central force: Paula's haunting voice and poetic songwriting. The album's opener, “Stay With Me,” is a cinematic dive into surrealist romance—starting in lo-fi crackle and ending in full digital immersion. "Holding On to Nothing" flexes Paula's lyrical teeth as she dissects betrayal with Ben Folds-style piano wrapped in Sabbath-inspired gloom.www.BetterHelp.com/TheBarnhttp://www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn http://www.betterhelp.com/TheBarnThis episode is sponsored by www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn and brought to you as always by The Barn Media Group. We also discuss Paula breaking off on her own in Nashville to try and become a singer/songwriter, moving to Los Angeles, meeting Dave Lombardo and teaming with him to write music once again as Venamoris, the making of their debut LP "Drown In Emotion" and the new LP "To Cross or To Burn", Paula's creative process and more.
Warren mentioned that one of our most downloaded episodes was toilet-themed, and without meaning to, that led to yet-more on-theme discussion. Hurry up and buy some bran phlakes shares now! Also, the new Bill and Ted Movie is good, provided you're in the right demo, and like Louis Armstrong. Anyhoo, if you're in the market for bidets, or patio furniture, or hanging chairs, try Babas, or go back in time, Bill and Ted style, and visit Consumers Distributing just beside the Bonanza that burned down. Welcome to welcome to the apolocalypse! It contains a potentially new segment called, "Am I wrong about this?" When faced with a Zombie apocalypse, shouldn't you aim for the achilles, or at least the leg? Maybe as a weapon-in-the-head lodging problem-avoidance. (SPOILER ALERT: we might give away a plot element from the first few minutes of pick whichever zombie franchise.) Or, how about many cans of expandable foam? With proper preparation, this could be a winning tactic. If you think your strategy for defeating the next plague of undead is better than some slow-moving farm equipment, let us know by email (maskedman@limitedappeal.net). Duane Denison is a songwriter, guitarist and founding member of Tomahawk, The Denison/Kimball Trio and most notable and widely influential, The Jesus Lizard. The Jesus Lizard have recorded six studio albums, two live recordings and a brace of singles and EPs, with the band's seventh album, Rack, out September 13 via Ipecac Recordings. Armed with their never dusty, always furious chops, The Jesus Lizard will support Rack with both national and international touring throughout 2024 and 25. Duane share's his early relationship with music, why he decided to pick up a guitar and his path from classical training, to heavy, angular rock and jazz. He tells us why The Jesus Lizard are able to retain their energy and intensity over their long career and why quality control is so important to the band. We also learn how refinement and brutal honesty play a role in the evolution of his guitar playing. Joe and Duane discuss the celebration of “heavy music” in the UK with bands like IDLES, and we hear a couple new Jesus Lizard tunes. This week on the podcast, Jason Rockman sat down with Buzz Osbourne - an American guitarist, vocalist and songwriter + founding member of the rock band Melvins! PLUS, we had the immense pleasure to talk to Greg Werckman - co-founder of Ipecac Recordings - to chat about the music business.
We are not the first podcast. OK? We start in Pooh Corner. Assume that half the world's population are going to disappear somehow. How could we adjust this event to make it as happy as possible? We should try to see such things in a positive light, after all. In case you are a magician or have an infinite glove or something similar, consider our advice. For example: we randomly alternate who is disappeared every day. There are implications, but we work out some of the logistics, including catering for parties. It's all really fucked up. Thanks Warren! If you're a mime and want to defend your existence, email us (maskedman@limitedappeal.net). Theme music courtesy of General Patton vs. The X-Ecutioners and Ipecac Recordings.
Ipecac Recordings co-founder Greg Werckman joins Andy to talk about founding an independent record label, not having a style, and how not being for everyone is okay. Intro music is "String Anticipation" by Cory Gray.
We start after a long hiatus with an Urban Legend: sneezing while on the toilet increases poop removal volume by 30-60%, which can decrease the risk of bum and poop cancers. Aren't you glad you know this now? It's all about timing! We discuss what coarseness of pepper is best for provoking a bowel clearing sneeze. But what if you poop too much? Then we discover that Bing can manufacture a superficially impressive description of a hypothetical Limited Appeal podcast in the same style as your scribe (ahem), but with a tiny amount of the effort. Turns out that Bing's topic, title, and description were actually formulaic and quite poor. Some offense. Feel free to write us, Bing, and contest our assessment of your work (maskedman@limitedappeal.net). Theme music courtesy of General Patton vs. The X-Ecutioners and Ipecac Recordings.
We hope you will enjoy listening to this episode! Back in the day, I guess. Nope, that doesn't really work, does it? T-Bone heard somewhere that birds can regenerate damaged hearing. It's not clear if we're talking about birds from rock concerts or those near other loud birds. But whatever the cause, it's quite cool they might give us clues for regenerative human hearing! Whether this leads to infinite numbers of heads remains unclear. If you think there's a topological difference between a water cup and a flatworm, let us know via email (maskedman@limitedappeal.net). James “Munky” Shaffer is best known as co-founder and guitarist for American rock band Korn. With a career spanning three decades, his latest project Venera ventures into experimental electronic territory. Venera L.A.-based James Shaffer and Atlanta-based Chris Hunt converged as Venera in early 2022 in Downtown Los Angeles while working on songs for singer Xhoana X. Their kindred interest and backgrounds in dramatic texture, electronics, and experimentation inspired an improvisation-based recording process that seeks to explore a sonic universe defined by evolving atmosphere, cinematic noise, and select collaborations. Venera released their self-titled debut album on Oct. 13 via Ipecac Recordings. Topics Discussed In This Episode: Treating everyone with kindness (00:04:34) James's newest project Venera (00:08:37) Unexpected occurrences while making music for Venera (00:18:29) How he experimented with new playing styles in Venera (00:21:34) Switching studios or environments to channel into different ways of creating and experimenting (00:24:19) Understanding one's own strengths and weaknesses / working with producer Ross Robinson (00:26:29) Exploring the origin of Korn's unique sound (00:29:30) Discussing alternate realities (00:31:26) Creating time for creative practices (00:35:58) James's daily habits and rituals (00:37:23) James's struggle with addiction and how he overcame it (00:42:06) Spiritual transcendence (00:45:00) How James originally got into music (00:50:02) The importance of having a creative outlet in one's life (00:54:28) artistdecoded.com instagram.com/munky_korn instagram.com/_veneramusic veneramusic.com kornofficial.com
We have a new contest! This is "Who's That Bird: Celebrity Edition", in which Warren will play the sound of a celebrity and the rest of us need to guess who it is. The celebrity is probably not a bird, and may not even be making bird noises, but you'll have to listen to be sure. Warren patiently explains this multiple times, and even so we're not very sure how this works. Spoiler alert: do you know your celebrity entomologists? Or is this a clever diversion to throw you off the piste? Ha! Haha. If you are Hoss and have started listening again after a few years, let us know by email (maskedman@limitedappeal.net). In part 2 of our name 5 things series, we make slightly more progress in finding possible animal opponents that a human might be able to take on in a fight, assuming the opponent is human-sized. As noted in part 1, the question is fraught with complexity. You have to fight the organism in its own habitat, but you may be allowed time to put on boots. Despite these constraints, we do come up with a short list of candidates. Without basking too much in this achievement, we then move on to consider which animal might win the battle royale of human-sized animals. Here again, there is some unexpected complexity to unpack, including the context-specific nature of fighting ability depending on one's opponent. We consider the importance of keeping your mouth closed, exploiting your hooves, protecting your neck, and discounting your horns. If you have any suggestions for contestants we have ignored, send us an email (maskedman@limitedappeal.net). Theme music courtesy of General Patton vs. The X-Ecutioners and Ipecac Recordings.

Alchemy for the Dead - the title of the upcoming Spotlights record, to be released April 28 via Ipecac Recordings, is a red thread that can be found in the lyrics and themes as well as in the music itself. All of that and more were the topics that we discussed with the band! Mario and Sarah grateful sat down with us to talk about many things, their non-love for baseball and football, their move to Pittsburgh, the importance of sound on both of their instruments, the topics of the new record and so much more. The interview showed to people who are pretty precise in their answers - another thing that is awesome about them. This is a funny, no-nonsense-interview. It's been a busy few months and Nick (New Morality Zine) and I are covering some of what's happened. Nick provides us with eight tracks that have come out so far and 2023 and I ramble about things you've probably already heard me talk about so far this year. We talk all things Scheme for 10 minutes, so shout out to Kyle and Albin, Lumpy putting out all the records, LDB, FYA and JAG, Spotify streams coming from Helsinki, gig photographers, other shows and a whole lot more. Tracks Played:1. Wreckage – “Days on Hold” [Our Time, Scheme]2. Riot Stares – “Relief Technique” [Sounds of Acceleration, DAZE]3. Narrow Head – “Gearhead” [Moments of Clarity, Run For Cover]4. Big Laugh – “Shadow Figure” [Consume Me, Revelation]5. Demand – “Glass” [Nearly Human, Extinction Burst]6. Militarie Gun – “Do It Faster” [Do It Faster, Loma Vista]7. NO MODEL – “EASTERN REVENGE” [The Demo, KILL YELLOW FEVER RECORDS]8. Palms – “Opening Titles / End Credits” [Opening Titles / End Credits, Ipecac Recordings]
After a whole episode of buildup (see Holy Straw, Batman), Warren finally gets the chance to introduce his new topic: name 5 animals, that if they were human-sized, you think you could take them. The rules of this strange fight club have you fighting in the organism's own habitat, so there are no freebies against whales even if you have three pillows and two buddies. We spend a lot of time considering the potential weakness of a long neck, and whether and how that might be counterbalanced by a good knockout punch. We also discuss the virtues of roundedness and beaklessness, and the futility of weapons design for ungulates. But we may not have come up with 5 satisfying exemplars, so there may be a part 2 someday. If you want to make any suggestions for that unlikely second chapter, send us an email (maskedman@limitedappeal.net). Warren has a perfect comeback topic to get back into the swing of things after a long hiatus, but first a warm-up question: how many holes does a straw have? Are you sure? What about a donut? What about a person? As usual – wait, can we say as usual when we record every year or so? Yeah, whatever, as usual, we do a bit of rambling while counting holes, and our conversation veers through considerations of semantics, anatomy, topology, cloacas, and explosive hydrostatic penises. If you want to opine on the proper criteria for a comparative biology pee and poo contest, or want to complain about the fact that we never actually get around to Warren's perfect question, send us an email (maskedman@limitedappeal.net). Sam Quartin is the singer, lyricist and founding member of The Bobby Lee's. Their newest record and Ipecac Recordings debut Bellevue will hit the streets October 7th. Bellevue is a ferocious follow up to the well received Skin Suit and an intense journey of manic metamorphosis that will leave you demanding to see them live. Sam Quartin is the guitarist and vocalist for THE BOBBY LEES. They're one of my favourite bands, rooted in punk, the blues, the garage and a big old dose of weird. Live, they are a tight, ball of wild, nihilistic claustrophobia that comes and finds you and detonates in your face. They're free of inhibitions and straitjackets and this just feeds into the crowd. It's proper rock n roll, respectful of the past but very much for today. They've just announced their new album, Bellevue, to be released on Ipecac Recordings on 7th October 2022. Ballpark Talk is back, due to its overwhelming previous success! Snorkelling vs. being a peeping tom. Same ballpark? Perspective matters here: who is peeping on whom? Warren makes a compelling case that some situations involve teammates. It probably makes sense, maybe? I don't know. We somehow end up discussing whether curtains should maybe be on the outside of the house. Is it defensible to be a shy snorkeler? How about at a public pool? Normally, podcasts will edit out the part of a recording where the hosts decide what to do. But we roll a different way from normal podcasts, so you get a short and not terribly interesting behind-the-scenes look at Warren introducing the possibilities. Anyway, we start a new version of the 'Who's that bird?' contest, but in this case Warren will name a bird and describe it, and its circumstances, and the rest of us need to attempt to produce the sound that Warren is describing. Warren will then subjectively (or by consensus) judge whose bird call is closest to the real one. You can play along at home, but since we can't hear you, you can't win. You'll have to judge for yourself whether your call is close to the mark. If you want to send us your call, you can do that, I suppose. Email us (maskedman@limitedappeal.net). On today's episode, I talk to musician Buzz Osborne. Originally from Morton, WA, Buzz founded the rock band Melvins in the early '80s, and in 1986, C/Z Records released their first EP Six Songs. Since then, they've released over 40 more albums, EPs and compilations on record labels like Alternative Tentacles, Sub Pop and Ipecac Recordings, and while never achieving mainstream success - if that's even something they sought - the band is both sustainable and hugely influential, influencing everyone from Nirvana and Soundgarden to Helmet, Tool, Mastodon and many others. Their latest album, Five Legged Dog, a 36-song acoustic reimagining of their discography, is out now! This is the website for Beginnings, subscribe on Apple Podcasts, follow me on Twitter.
We accidentally create a new segment to start this episode because we got caught up in whether our DJ was dead or his estate needed to spin the tunes. What is an estate? Do you need to have anything? What if you're dead? Does real estate imply you have an estate? What if the teddybear you get buried with was bequeathed to someone else? What if none of this is interesting to anyone at all? Hmph. On a related note, if someone says your singing voice is very distinctive, is that a compliment? How would you note sarcasm in your written compliment, if you wanted to? Or if you were quoting someone else's sarcastic comment? And wanted to do so sarcastically? How BM£ interesting. Finally, how many chests does a centaur have? We discuss the internal anatomical implications of having an extra chest, and it's as $%^ fascinating as you might expect? If you want to engage with us about any of this for some reason, send us an email (maskedman@limitedappeal.net). Theme music courtesy of General Patton vs. The X-Ecutioners and Ipecac Recordings.
Buzz Osborne is the iconic wild-haired founder, frontman, and guitarist for the legendary band, Melvins. Melvins are an American rock band formed in 1983, in Montesano, Washington. Their early work was key to the development of both grunge and sludge metal. The band released their 32nd (unofficial number by Buzz's account) studio album, "Working With God", in February of 2021 through Ipecac Recordings. Spotify wants us to have a trailer, so here you go. This is a shortened episode featuring a brand new segment, called "Ballpark Talk", in which the premise is to decide whether two things are in the same ballpark or different ones. Today's inaugural topic: cannibalism versus eating a pet. Enjoy! Theme music courtesy of General Patton vs. The X-Ecutioners and Ipecac Recordings.
This podcast was a rare occasion when most of us were in the same room. This means that the audio is generally exquisite since we are using T-Bone's studio, but also somewhat annoying because Warren insists on giving listeners cues of our eating and drinking. Do judges have their own gavels, or is one provided in the courtroom? What if someone breaks the gavel, is there a spare? John is on hand to answer, even though he insists he hasn't spent much time in a courtroom. You be the judge of what he knows about judges. Get it? If you are a judge, or a gavel equipment manager, and want to set the record straight, send us an email (maskedman@limitedappeal.net). An oft-discussed but not previously resolved question: is Die Hard a Christmas movie? We settle the matter, I guess, provided you don't care very much about the matter in the first place. Turns out the whole question turns on the secret, possibly offscreen shenanigans between Bruce and the security guard. If you can read between the scenes to imagine some help-shtooping, then you have yourself a holiday classic. Take that, Julie Andrews! Our handy rule turns out to illuminate the question for many other Christmas movie candidates, although the degree to which off-screen activity is implied is sometimes controversial. Screenwriters of the future, take note: make sure that you explicitly clarify the off or on screen antics involving the help if you want to be included in the holiday rotation. If you need help with how to write about expressly boning, email us (maskedman@limitedappeal.net). Theme music courtesy of General Patton vs. The X-Ecutioners and Ipecac Recordings.
Welcome to our marathon podcast with the fascinating and multi-talented Eric Alan Livingston. Eric resides in the Bay Area and has worked with a plethora of artists throughout his career. Most recently he has created artwork, packaging and videos for Ipecac Recordings bands such as Mr. Bungle, Dead Cross and Mike Patton w/ Jean Claude Vannier. Currently he is working on the artwork and layout for the upcoming fifth record from supergroup, Tomahawk. Eric is an artist in the truest sense and his body of work is eclectic to say the least. Aside from shooting, animating and directing videos, he runs lights for touring acts, is writing and directing a feature length film, and works as a musician/multi-instrumentalist in various projects (currently with Satanic Planet, featuring members of Dead Cross, the Locust and Planet B). We talk tattoos, sex toys (that Eric made for Kink.com), music & music videos, touring, classic horror movies & directors, philosophy, and even toss in a splash of politics and religion. Side note: Eric created the This Is Death Metal video for Skunk's band A Good Rogering. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Welcome back! Have you washed your hands? Either way, keep your soggy end out of the dip. Warren asks whether Timmy was right in suggesting that George from Seinfeld put his whole mouth in the tip. Remember the before-time, when this might have been a question? It's hard to imagine now, but at one stage it was somewhat defensible to dip near someone else, and maybe even do so twice, depending on rotation and the number of chip protuberances. If you know can clarify the benefits of tube-shaped chips, or know which of our episodes contains a discussion of aphid honeydew, send us an email (maskedman@limitedappeal.net). Theme music courtesy of General Patton vs. The X-Ecutioners and Ipecac Recordings.

For this episode, we revisit Inventions and Shit, our segment in which we present ideas of new inventions for free (mostly) in case any venture capitalists are listening. Warren's latest idea is a toilet water warmer, which, you may have guessed, warms the water in your toilet. There are several major benefits (or perhaps problems) depending on your anatomy, digestive physiology, and temperature preference. And maybe the country of origin of your dog. If you are a robot (preferably not a racist or masturbating one) and wish to license our idea (please don't) you can contact us by email (maskedman@limitedappeal.net). Theme music courtesy of General Patton vs. The X-Ecutioners and Ipecac Recordings.

Having been stuck on Season 11 for a while, we skipped 12 and went straight to 13. Bad luck be damned! By the way, have you been eating salami wrong? Quite possibly. Anyway, this episode marks a return to our contest feature Nature Walk, Who's That Bird Non-Bird Edition, Round 5. How dramatic! For this contest, we have to listen to an audio clip of a nonbird, describe the nonbird or name it, describe what the nonbird is thinking, or what it is trying to achieve with the sound, and then provide a collective noun for the animal. Play along at home, though you'll be hard pressed to match the amateur natural history insights we muster. If you need any more nostril-based trivia, let us know via email (maskedman@limitedappeal.net). Theme music courtesy of General Patton vs. The X-Ecutioners and Ipecac Recordings.
