UFO researcher Dr. David Clarke, who has been investigating the famous Calvine UFO incident for 15 years, recently reported in the Daily Mail that his search for the two witnesses who saw a strange, diamond-shaped craft hovering over the Scottish Highlands in 1990 were apparently scared into silence. Richard Grieve, who used to work with the two witnesses at a hotel in Pitlochry in 1990 but can't remember their names, told Clarke that two officials with the Ministry of Defense came to the hotel just days after the incident to talk to them privately. The two witnesses, who worked as chefs at the hotel, never acted the same again after the encounter with government officials, and now nobody knows where to find them. “It is like they have vanished off the face of the Earth,” Grieve told Clarke recently. This week, Morgan joins Scottish mountain bike legend and everyone's favorite World Cup analyser - Ben Cathro. He and Morgan take the e-bikes around some of Ben's local trails in Pitlochry, including a very slick DH track he built last year. Since this was Morgan's first time on an e-bike, he and Ben discuss their merits and how they might change the sport. A well as e-bike insights, Ben also shares his experience of trail building and the necessity of getting formal approval. Since Morgan and Ben are riding ebikes - they take two quick laps around these Pitlochry trails, riding the DH before taking in a lap of another Pitlochry classic.

In January 2020, BTG Editor David Chadderton spoke to Elizabeth Newman, Artistic Director of Pitlochry Festival Theatre in Scotland, about her plans for the coming year. Less than two months later, the country shut down due to the coronavirus pandemic. The season was cancelled and the future of this theatre, amongst many others around the country, looked bleak, but it continued to commission and produce new work, mostly online. A year on, and Pitlochry has announced its 70th anniversary season including its first winter ensemble, this time geared to the conditions in which they will have to work for the forseeable future. Pitlochry has also collaborated with Edinburgh’s Lyceum Theatre and Naked Productions on a new digital audio theatre platform, Sound Stage. Elizabeth speaks, in this episode, about both of these, and also about how the events of last year unfolded. The Sound Stage events so far announced will be available for just a few days at the end of each month from March to October 2021. The first, Angela by Mark Ravenhill directed by Polly Thomas, will run from 26 to 28 March and star Pam Ferris, Matti Houghton, Toby Jones, Jackson Laing and Joseph Millson. For more information about any of the events mentioned in this episode, see the Pitlochry Festival Theatre web site.
Larry Gentis re-enacts the experiences of Simeon in the Temple. Adrian Plass talks about doing things God's Way. Ramsay Beattie asks David Barrie what the Pitlochry community is doing during the Pandemic. Ernie Rea tries to understand what the church is going through in Hong Kong.
Straiph Wilson wants to meet the pair who captured six images of an unidentified flying object over Calvine in Highland Perthshire in August 1990. Images and files relating to the sighting were supposed to be made public in January after a 30 year wait but the MoD has now said the records won't be released until 2072. The Calvine incident happened on August 4 1990 when two men saw a large diamond-shaped object hovering for about 10 minutes before it shot upwards at great speed. The pair said they saw military aircraft make a number of low-level passes while the UFO sat above the village. One of the witnesses took six colour photographs of the daytime incident, which have never been made public. Straiph said: “That speaks volumes when the government does that. Our first time driving in the UK! Was it a white-knuckler? Or super easy, barely an inconvenience? Jon shares his biggest challenges driving from the passenger seat (in the US) and on the left side of the road, and it has nothing to do with actual driving! We rented a car and took a spontaneous trip north with the intention of spending the night, um, somewhere. We like to leave our options open since we never know which direction we'll be pulled or how far we may go whenever we go on a road trip. We learned a bunch of new phrases related to driving as we drove along the Fife Coastal Route up to St. Andrews, then on to Perth before making plans to spend the night in the small village of Aberfeldy, which is now Karen's frontrunner for our retirement destination. Special place, for sure, and we both felt the vibe equally. All we need are barn boots, some Harris Tweed jackets and caps, a few JRT dogs, a cottage and a Land Rover and we're all set! After bidding adieu to Aberfeldy, we drove to Pitlochry for a stroll, scones and coffee, and then on to Stirling to visit the awe-inspiring Stirling Castle, before ending our weekend jaunt in Falkirk at The Kelpies, the 30-meter-high horse-head sculptures depicting kelpies, or mythical shape-shifting water spirits. We're now looking forward to our next spontaneous road trip!Follow us on Instagram: @SumplaceNewFollow us on Facebook: @SumplaceNewCredits:Intro/Outro Music: The World at Large by Daniel O'ConnorIntro VO: Laura Welsh
The golf course can be a dangerous place and the equipment used by greenkeepers can cause serious harm. Despite the best intentions and the most stringent safety procedures, accidents can still happen. This was the case for Stuart Griffiths, the course manager at Blair Atholl and Pitlochry, who was airlifted to hospital after the mower he was using slipped down an embankment, rolling on top of him and crushing him beneath. Stuart's now recovering at home from this accident and he joined BIGGA's John Young for a conversation with Greenkeeper International. He explained have been much worse and gave thanks those who have offered him support in the months since. Every year, 34 million people go to the theatre, double the number that attend Premier League football. But lockdown and physical distancing rules mean the industry is on the edge of collapse. The artistic director of the Pitlochry theatre, Elizabeth Newman, describes the impact. Help support our independent journalism at theguardian.com/infocus
Continuing his weekly live performances as Front Row’s Lockdown Artist in Residence, Icelandic pianist Víkingur Ólafsson performs live from the empty Harpa concert hall in Reykjavik. Tonight Víkingur will play The Arts and the Hours by Rameau, an interlude from the 18th Century French composer’s final opera, Les Boreades. George The Poet is a London-born spoken word performer of Ugandan heritage. His podcast 'Have You Heard George’s Podcast?' has won armfuls of awards and his work as a recording artist and a social commentator has now been recognised at the Visionary Honours Awards for championing diversity and inclusion in the arts, entertainment and showbiz. Elizabeth Newman, director of the Pitlochry Festival Theatre, is directing David Greig's new play Adventures of the Painted People remotely, the actors all separately isolated. Towards the end of the first week she tells John Wilson how the work is going. She explains too the unique situation of her theatre, in a small community in the Scottish Highlands, its financial predicament and how through imaginative creative initiatives it is continuing its role. Professor John Mullan is celebrating the merits of reading, or re-reading, the novels of Jane Austen during lockdown. Today, the title that’s many people’s favourite, thanks not least to countless adaptations: Pride and Prejudice. Presenter John Wilson Producer Jerome Weatherald Studio Manager Tim Heffer
We are keeping up the pace with the Two Reds podcast, in an endeavour to keep you positive and focused during lockdown. Which is why this weeks’ guest was an obvious choice. Chris Barrowman is a young Scottish dentist who chose to open a private squat in the quiet Perthshire town of Pitlochry and has grown that into a micro-corporate that not only had 4 locations before Covid-19 - but he also completed on his 5th practice acqusition during lockdown! The InfinityBlu Group is well positioned and ready to take advantage of the return to work. We talk to Chris about his history, about how he got his first practice off the ground with limited resources and about the success he has enjoyed in further squats and acquisitions, all associate driven. Along the way we will talk about managing a growing team, about leadership, systems and marketing. Here’s a man who sees the bottle as always half-full - and he shares how he coped with the first few scary days of lockdown and is now planning a successful return.
With the Coronavirus lockdown, many of us are having our relationships deeply disturbed as we struggle to connect with others from a distance. What impact does this have on the gospel? This time on PEP Talk, Andy and Kristi speak with small town pastor and football chaplain David Barrie about connecting and sharing with others in our churches, sports clubs and our communities.David Barrie is one of the pastors of Pitlochry Baptist Church in Highland Perthshire. He has served as a chaplain in Scottish Football since 2001, and for the past 8 seasons, chaplain to St Johnstone Football Club in Perth.
