For the latest Scots Whay Hae! podcast Ali spoke to writer and poet Michael Pedersen, in the splendid surroundings of Glasgow's Mitchell Library, to talk about his debut novel Muckle Flugga, which is published with Faber & Faber.Michael describes the place and people of Muckle Flugga before talking about why this is the story he has told for his debut, explaining that the time was just right. He then breaks down the three central characters of The Father, his son Ouse, and the enigmatic interloper Firth, and what they each represent, which leads to a discussion of the themes which drive the novel. The conversation also touches on the influence of the Gothic tradition, Robert Louis Stevenson, and Scottish literature more widely. All of that plus language and lighthouse chat, and a brilliant reading from Michael. It was such a treat to be able to talk in depth to Michael Pedersen about this fantastic and life-affirming novel which is among the best debuts of recent times. The result is another memorable SWH! podcast, even if we do say so ourselves!Full details, including all the ways to listen, are over at scotswhayhae.com

In this episode I sat down with Anouska Firth to talk about her experiences battling her insecurities around self worth, eating disorders, drug addiction and also coming to terms with the consequences of her actions from the choices she had made. It's a fairly contentious topic to discuss some of the things we do in this episode, however I hope people can enjoy this episode for it's openness to dealing with some difficult topics. Anouska is someone who has really felt the brunt of her choices and part of her journey to finding peace with those choices has been through facing them, having close friends who have told her some fairly uncomfortable truths and having the willingness to try pull herself out of the pit she had fallen into. No matter how difficult the challenges your facing, there is always someone who has probably had it worst. The great news is that you can get through it and I hope this episode is an example of this. The British Veterinary Association and the Pig Veterinary Society have issued a new joint statement calling for farrowing crates to be banned. They say they should be phased out over the next 15 years to give the industry a chance to adapt. Farrowing crates are the small pens that 60% of sows in the UK are kept in around the time they give birth, to ensure the safety of their piglets. Animal welfare campaigners have been saying they should be banned for years, but farmers have concerns that replacing them with alternative systems will not only endanger the lives of piglets but also be costly and will put them at a disadvantage to farmers in other countries where the crates aren't banned. Conservation groups are urging ministers in Scotland to reject plans for an offshore windfarm which the developer predicts will kill tens of thousands of seabirds. Five charities, led by RSPB Scotland, have written to the first minister to argue that approving Berwick Bank in the Firth of Forth would undermine efforts to protect nature. SSE says it has already amended its designs to minimise any potential risks to Scottish seabirds. All week we've been discussing pulses, the dried seeds from plants like beans, lentils and peas all this week. Most of the pulses we buy in the shops are grown overseas. They're a valuable source of protein and there's a growing market for protein rich products in groups including runners, gym-goers as well as vegans So could UK farmers cash in? We visit a company which processes home-grown and imported pulses. Presenter = Caz Graham Producer = Rebecca Rooney

The Government's scrapping the Resource Management Act and replacing it with new planning laws. RMA Reform Minister Chris Bishop says current rules make it too hard to build the infrastructure and houses New Zealand desperately needs. He says Cabinet's agreed on a blueprint for reform, which will standardise zoning and remove differences for each local council – aiming to implement it before councils start their 2027 long-term plans. He claims the replacement RMA will cut admin and compliance costs by 45 percent. Mt Hobson Group Director Hamish Firth told Kerre Woodham he's expecting a much more liberal planning system – one that presumes land use will be permitted unless it significantly affects other people's property rights. Valentino Zucchetti When Valentino Zucchetti won the gold medal at the Genée International Ballet Competition in 2006, Dance Gazette called him ‘dazzling' and ‘above all, devastatingly charismatic.' The Italian artist has brought those qualities as dancer with the Royal Ballet in London (especially in vivid roles like Mercutio in Romeo and Juliet, Lescaut in Manon and Lensky in Onegin), and an award-winning choreographer. Works like Scherzo, Anemoi and Jeunesse (created for the RAD's Fonteyn competition in 2023) radiate a lyrical eye and a heartfelt response to music. As he prepares a premiere for the London Handel Festival, he discusses the rewards and challenges of his dual career. Valentino Zucchetti trained at La Scala and the Royal Ballet School and won the RAD's 2006 Genée International Ballet Competition (now The Fonteyn) and the 2007 Solo Seal award. He danced with Zürich Ballet and Norwegian National Ballet before joining the Royal Ballet in 2010, promoted to First Soloist in 2014. He won the RBS's Ursula Moreton Choreographic Award in 2005, and has created ballets for New English Ballet Theatre (Orbital Motion, Enticement's Lure, Firth of Fifth, Into the Light) and the Royal Ballet, including Scherzo (South Bank Sky Arts Award for Dance) and Anemoi (Critic's Circle National Dance Award). He created Jeunesse for The Fonteyn 2023. LINKShttps://www.london-handel-festival.com/show/2025-double-bill-tales-of-apollo-hercules/ Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Beer is reclaiming its popularity - in large part due to options with lower carbs and alcohol levels. Stats NZ has revealed the volume of beer for consumption has risen 5.4 percent to 296 million litres, after successive years of declines. Volumes of wine and spirits have fallen. Brewers Association Executive Director, Dylan Firth, says low-carb beer makes up about 20 percent of the market and is steadily becoming the drink of choice. "A lot of those brands are shifting, whether it's the mainstream stuff or craft. So it's really interesting to see, and a lot of that's driven by consumer preferences." By now we know that we need to connect to the More than Human world. We know we need to grow into adulthood and elder hood. We know we need to move from a Trauma Culture to an Initiation Culture. But knowing these things is not the same as living them as a reality. To get here, we need waymakers, people of huge heart and raw courage to walk away from the limited, goal-based directions of our culture and step into the ways of being where we meet in open-hearted, full-hearted, strong-hearted relationship with the land and all that lives there. Daniel Firth Griffith is one of these people. With his wife, Morgan, and their three children, Daniel lives on 400 acres on the eastern side of the Appalachian mountains where he is steadily building relationship with the land. He lives amongst cattle, sheep, goats and horses - the latter used for logging, on land that was scheduled to be clear-cut when Daniel and Morgan first moved there. With a growing understanding that even the forms of agriculture we term 'regenerative' are still part of what I would call the Trauma Culture, Daniel and Morgan have been on a steady journey of transition through to something that feels to me entirely different. This is what we need to be. It's not clear cut. There isn't a hard and fast recipe because every bit of land is different and each of us is different and the routes to connection are unique... up to a point. But there are baselines we can learn: be human. Find what that means for you when 'human' is not simply being a wheel in an extractive system. We had a really long conversation and we stopped at about 90 minutes in and restarted so you can listen to it in two parts. We go down rabbit holes. We tell stories, or at least, Daniel does, big, deep, tear-flowing, heart-searing stories that made both of us weep...because stories are how we learn. This conversation, or these conversations, felt like sitting at the feet of an indigenous elder and the fact that this can happen in 2025, talking to someone of white ancestry who lives on lands stolen by colonialists... this is what gives me hope. We can't undo our past, but we can grow into what the future needs of us, and Daniel, Morgan and those who visit them are doing this. Daniel's an astonishing author as well as everything else, so please do visit his website and buy his books: as with everything else he does, they are filled with layers upon layers of meaning. Daniel's website https://danielfirthgriffith.com/
Daniel remains one of the few people I know who is originally of the Trauma Culture but is living absolutely integral to his land - and we couldn't keep our conversation confined to 60 minutes. So we broke at an appropriate point and came back. This is the second part - please do listen to the first if you've only just found us - we literally paused the recording, took a breath and continued…As ever, if you're interested in Daniel's work visit his website. And if you have the means, do buy his books, they are genuinely beautiful. Stagtine, Wild Like Flowers and Dark Country are all out now and Plain of Pillars will be released in May of 2025.

All six groups shared living quarters in the same end of the ship and were given the same diet during the course of the study, with the exception of six different treatments that Lind wanted to test. The first group got cider. The second group got diluted sulfuric acid. The third group got vinegar. The fourth group got sea water. The fifth group got two oranges and a lemon. Finally, the last group got a purgative mixture of commonly used medicines.Script 2aShe grasped her carefully embroidered reticule, a present from her beloved aunt Mary, given to her at Christmas, a gift that she treasured dearly, despite it's garish colour, and stepped off the sidewalk into the busy London street, narrowly avoiding a huge puddle. She hailed a hackney which appeared suddenly through the fall gloom. The driver's rough attire of sackcloth pants held up by suspenders looked filthy but she tried not to stare as he pulled his horses to a halt beside her. ‘Can you take me to Clarence House?' she asked. The man grimaced.'Clarence house be 5 blocks away, he growled in his distant London accent ‘ I ain't got time, lady! I be workin'Script 2bAs she walked she thought about her brawny Highlander, Hamish Campbell, the one who had proposed to her only a week ago and to whom she had run from despite her longing to be with him. ‘Doona go!' he had pleaded earnestly, ‘I doona want to live without ye, I can no.'His deep voice resonated in his head and she flushed to remember it. They had not been alone, his 5 cousins, Angus, Calum, Bret, Jed and Colin had witnessed the whole embarrassing episode there on the riverbank next to their little croft house in the little village of Firth on the banks of the river Forth.. she had stood right on the waters edge, the men behind her. In this essay, Rhiannon provides an Afterword summarizing some of the key themes in a recently published volume of collected essays edited by Jim Donaghey titled Fight for a New Normal? Anarchism and Mutual Aid in the COVID-19 Pandemic Crisis. Rhiannon also playfully problematizes the title of the book, arguing that rather than fighting for a new normal, anarchists should be fighting against normativity itself. Cumbrae The island of Cumbrae, also known as Great Cumbrae, is Scotland's most accessible island. An 8 minute ferry journey from Largs, it has been inhabited since the end of the last ice age, but became popular during the 20th century thanks to the Clyde paddle steamers. The main settlement on Cumbrae is the Victorian seaside town of Millport. Countless visitors take day trips from the mainland to “cycle roond Millport!” Field Studies Council Field Studies Council Millport has a storied history as a marine research station. Now a thriving field centre, it offers accommodation and teaching spaces, making it an excellent base for environmental education and fieldwork. Visitors can head out on the research vessel Actinia to collect scientific samples or go wildlife watching, spotting dolphins, seals, and other marine life. The centre is part of Field Studies Council, a UK charity dedicated to delivering nature courses and environmental education across its 16 centres Millport Golf Club Millport Golf Club is a diverse golf course stretched across the heathland on the highest point of the Island. David Farrier examines how “wild clocks”—the biological and ecological rhythms that living beings use to coordinate their lives with the greater cycles of the Earth—are falling out of synch with each other in our age of ecological crisis. Traversing the Future Library in Norway, Sami reindeer herds in Scandinavia, and oyster colonies in Scotland's Firth of Forth, David considers the different ways time is made between people, more-than-human beings, and place—and wonders if the disordering of our wild clocks offers an opportunity to understand anew how time can be an expression of kinship. Most of us could probably come up with a few names of the kings who ruled in England in the centuries before the Norman Conquest, but the queens? Maybe not. We know they existed, but it can be hard to figure out much else about them – or whether later medieval notions of what queenship actually is even fit. This week, Danièle speaks with Matthew Firth about what early queenship looked like, the role queens played in legitimizing a king's right to rule, and how three incredible women shaped English royal history. You can support this podcast on Patreon - go to https://www.patreon.com/medievalists

In the late 17th century, Scotland tried to establish a colony in Panama - and it all went horribly wrong. In July 1698, a fleet of five ships departed from the Firth of Forth with some 1,200 people onboard. They were bound for the Isthmus of Panama, a paradise in Central America, and their goal was to establish Scotland's first colony - New Caledonia. It was a bold, desperate gamble, intended to save Scotland from financial ruin. But only one year later, most of the settlers were dead, and the colony had been abandoned. To tell us about the Darien scheme and how it all went wrong, we're joined by Douglas Watt, author of 'The Price of Scotland'. He explains what happened when the settlers arrived in Panama and the consequences for Scotland as a whole.Produced by James Hickmann and edited by Dougal Patmore.Enjoy unlimited access to award-winning original documentaries that are released weekly and AD-FREE podcasts. In this thought-provoking discussion, Daniel Firth Griffith explores deep connections between humans and nature through the lenses of animism, spirituality, and regenerative agriculture. The conversation spans multiple aspects such as the interplay of modern agriculture with ancient practices, highlighting the misconceived ideal of large herd management rooted in European colonialism. Emphasizing the importance of ethical animal harvesting, Griffith critiques conventional slaughter methods for their detrimental effects on meat quality and advocates for local, field harvesting practices. D. Firth Griffith walks the dreams of his ancestors, stumbling often but attempting to be an honorable heir in a world on the edge. Today, he is Wingina, the past, present, and future land of the Monican People.
