Twelve Songs of Christmas

Twelve Songs returns after a life-induced hiatus with a good interview with Ray Benson from the Austin-based Western swing band Asleep at the Wheel. We talked in the spring when the band was coming to New Orleans to play Jazz Fest, and you can see my story focusing on the band celebrating 50 years in the game with its Half a Hundred Years album and tour. That tour is always going on or soon to restart, so check your local listings because if they aren't coming to town, they'll get there sooner or later. We talk about COVID, which became very real for the band when members of the band were hit hard by it earlier this year. We also talk about his long-time musical friend Willie Nelson, Benson's admiration for his "Pretty Paper," and hear Christmas music by the band, Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys, The Resentments (on a song by one of my favorites, Jon Dee Graham), and Folk Uke, which features Willie Nelson and Arlo Guthrie's daughters.

Cathy Guthrie and Amy Nelson are both daughters of world famous musicians, but remain incredibly down to earth. They formed their comedy songwriting duo Folk Uke in 1996, and have frequently toured in support of Arlo Guthrie and Willie Nelson, in addition to garnering their own unique success. Folk Uke was actually on tour right when the pandemic hit in March 2020, and have stayed fairly active despite having all their remaining shows cancelled. Longtime friends of our host Brian, Amy and Cathy catch up with us as they discuss their current music-making plans, and a scheme to postpone shows in order to keep getting mentioned on local media outlets in Austin, TX. Hear them on Spotify, and follow them on Instagram. For everything Folk Uke, head to folkuke.com.

[Yes, they are the daughters of Arlo Guthrie and Willie Nelson:]It was 1996 in San Diego's Gaslamp Quarter when Cathy Guthrie and Amy Nelson met at a bar…where they both worked.  One was a tramp and one was devastatingly pure.  With a ukulele and an acoustic guitar, they formed a band for the same reason kids join gangs— just to survive, but also to unleash the brilliance that was poking them from within.  Don't believe the rumors. Folk Uke is not totally amazing. They're just kind of amazing. If you find yourself at a Folk Uke show, you are in for a treat— but maybe not the kind of treat that you like the taste of.  Come to a show and see for yourself. Better yet, buy their albums first and you may save yourself the trouble. And if you make it to a live Folk Uke show, do your best to enjoy it…and then give them two more chances.  They are hit and miss, but so are you most likely, and that is their charm. We live to inspire and we're tired of writing in third person.Love, Cathy & Amyhttps://www.folkuke.com/index.html

BLACKIE AND THE RODEO KINGS originally formed in 1996. Now into their second decade and with one JUNO award and several JUNO nominations under their belts, Blackie and the Rodeo Kings has organically evolved into one of the finest roots-oriented bands in North America. They have released seven CDs and gradually developed a feeling of brotherhood manifested in a sense of groove, timberal blend and melodic and rhythmic play that is distinctive, mystical, energizing and constantly evocative. Blackie and the Rodeo Kings remains one of Canada's greatest musical treasures. Their latest CD is 'Kings and Queens' and pairs the band with some of their favorite female singers and friends including Roseanne Cash, Emmylou Harris, Janiva Magness, Lucinda Williams and more. FOLK UKE is an eclectic acoustic folk duo comprised of Cathy Guthrie and Amy Nelson featuring perfectly melded harmonies and sharp, often biting wit. The daughters of two great American songwriters (Arlo and Willie), the two were musical holdouts until they gave into the force and began writing and playing music together a decade ago. Armed with a ukulele and a guitar, this duo is a unique amalgam of angelic harmonies often wrapped around edgy, surprising lyrics. Check out YouTube for some of their more provocative songs. Folk Uke plays folk music in its truest form with a delightfully wicked twist. The duo's latest album is "Reincarnation."
