My wife and I stood at the edge of the world—or at least what felt like it—squinting through the murk and sea spray to snap photos of a decommissioned lighthouse. Less like some beacon of hope, its white tower loomed like a ghost, haunting the craggy cliffs of coastal Victoria and my vacation prospects. We'd arrived at the sleepy Victorian coastal town of Port Fairy expecting sunshine, a pleasant breeze—and if not asking too much—maybe a kangaroo or two bounding in silhouette against the sunset. Instead, a spectrum of misery lay before us: wind that could strip the paint from a car and rain in erratic, bipolar bursts. Interview with Jeff Lang 2024 Australian guitarist-songwriter-vocalist-producer, Jeff Lang has built a reputation for making startling music that is accomplished, intricate, gutsy, melodic and loaded with soul. Often taking unexpected turns, he has consistently inspired his audiences by creating a stylistically diverse catalog of over 25 albums. Jeff has mischievously called his music ‘Disturbed Folk.' One writer referred to him as a “quiet achiever.” But the overall impression one has from observing Jeff's lengthy career is that of a driven man who keeps his head down, playing and recording music as if his very life depends on it. Outside of his homeland, Jeff has toured the UK, Europe, Japan, India, China, South Africa, New Zealand and Canada as well as concentrated work in the U.S., where he has played upwards of 300 shows, living there for 6 months at a time. He has appeared on prestigious American radio programs A Prairie Home Companion, Mountain Stage and Acoustic Café. Jeff has shared stages with Bob Dylan, Dr. John, Richard Thompson, Bonnie Raitt, Ani Di Franco, Chris Whitley, Albert Collins, Loudon Wainwright III, Greg Brown, John Butler, AR Rahman and Bob Geldolf, among many others. Jeff has delivered show-stopping performances at festivals all across the globe: The Dublin Blues Festival, Philadelphia Folk Festival, Quebec City Music Festival, Falcon Ridge Folk Festival, Winterhawk Bluegrass Festival, Fuji Rock, Glastonbury, Echo Park China, Ottawa BluesFest as well as on his home turf at Port Fairy, Woodford, Bluesfest Byron Bay and Womadelaide. Jeff Lang's unique musical vision easily finds a home in myriad settings, from large festival stages to the intimate, long-running Ann Arbor, Michigan club The Ark to the Sydney Opera House. Most importantly, Jeff Lang has achieved what is a rarity in the cluttered world of contemporary sounds: his own voice. Jeff's info https://jefflang.com.au

The Southern Ocean is up against seismic blasting proposals, in the search for new oil and gas, which threaten whale songlines and precious ocean ecosystems. Seismic blasting surveys are proposed in waters as close as 8km from the coast of Warrnambool and Port Fairy. The seismic blasting process involves ships towing airguns that blast powerful soundwaves, and is commonly used to identify resources beneath the ocean floor, blasting through the water, rock and deep into the ocean floor, between 230-250 decibels every 10 seconds, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week often for months on end. This has been shown to negatively and harshly impact marine ecosystems, and has raised the concerns of marine biologists, environmentalists, First Nations groups, commercial and local fishermen, swimmers, and surfers. Both Warrnambool and Moyne Shire Council recently voted to oppose seismic blasting along our coastline in response to an outpouring of concern from community members. But to stop these projects and protect Southern Sea Country from this dangerous practice, we need to keep up the pressure and make sure the our community's opposition remains consistently heard by the decision makers in federal parliament and national regulatory bodies. With a flurry of activity on the local golf scene, and one great question accidentally omitted from the recent mailbag episode, we call an emergency pod, and spend longer than we thought we would discussing the events of the week. First up is the topic that has been running hot on the local rumor mill - the alleged misappropriation of funds and assets from a prominent Victorian golf club. Scott reached out to Victoria Police and the Australian PGA, and legal issues permitting, we share what we are able on this front. The impending tweaks to three of the back nine holes on Port Fairy are discussed, pursuant to a recent Victorian state government finding regarding the Club's boundary. The National's insta poll on their ‘Dream 18' is fodder for Scott, who comes in off the long run over the selection of Old's 3rd hole above those from Gunnamatta and Moonah. This leads into a broader discussion of Old and the other selections on the fantasy layout. Lastly – we spend a good chunk of time addressing Shane Derby's question on the best short 3s, short 4s and short 5s in Australia. Sure to provoke some strong listener reaction, Scot & Matt make their nominations, and hopefully haven't made any glaring omissions! The second half of the recent batch of listener questions submitted a little while ago are all covered in this fun episode. Loads of really interesting and thought-provoking topics to cover including a hypothetical re-routing of a Sydney public course, and state of origin battle of the best of Victoria versus the best of the rest of Australia. Golf on the northern beaches of Sydney, courses high on the aesthetics, conditioning and eye candy score, as well as stone walls and internal OOB. We're giving over the whole of Episode 660 of Folk Roots Radio to a very engaging conversation with Canadian poet and singer-songwriter Bob Jensen. Bob Jensen has been writing poems and songs all his life – he also has some great stories to share. An artist who very much likes to keep busy, Bob Jensen released “Live In Australia” (which was recorded in Brisbane with Celtic guitarist Tony McManus) in 2020; and in 2021, he released “For The Sake Of The Song”, a ten song cover song collection. Bob Jensen was also the guiding light behind the 2022 release of an updated version of protest song “Which Side Are You On?”, by a group of artists under the name ‘Artists For Action'. Bob Jensen is about to release “The Blarney Session”, a solo spoken word performance recorded in Port Fairy, Australia. So, settle down and enjoy The Poetry and Music of Bob Jensen on Folk Roots Radio. Enjoy! If you like the artists you hear on this show and want to support them, don't just stream their music – BUY their music, and then you'll really make a difference to their income at a time when it is becoming much more difficult to make a living as a musician. An overdue chat with an astute horse trainer and one of racing's true characters. Lindsey took a giant step in 2019 when he opened a business at Warrnambool, but left his WA stables operating under the supervision of a trusted lieutenant. He talks of his delight in being able to combine the two operations to win more than 100 races in each of the last three seasons. Lindsey talks of his use of heavy sand in the preparation of horses. He expresses his opinion on the theory that too much sand work can diminish a horse's natural speed. He describes the idyllic surroundings in which his horses train at Narrawong Beach near Port Fairy. Lindsey brings us up to date on the progress of recent winners God Has Chosen,Triple Missile, Tuvalu, In The Boat and Corner Pocket. He takes us back to his apprenticeship to Colin France at Rockingham (WA) and his brief riding career. The trainer looks back on his move to Victoria and a job with successful trainer Tom Hughes Snr. He talks of his time on the Gold Coast with Henry Davis, universally recognized as one of Australia's best ever horse trainers. He remembers his connection with Getting Closer, one of racing's most talked about “plunge” horses. Lindsey piled on weight during his time in Queensland. He looks back on the gym sessions he attended on his return to Perth and his friendship with ace harness trainer Justin Warwick. He still marvels at his good fortune in being able to purchase a tried horse who would kick start his training career. His success with Old Cobber brought him a number of horses from leviathan owner/breeder Bob Peters. Lindsey pays tribute to the horses who've shaped his destiny. Old Money, Old Comrade, Plastered, Black Heart Bart, and Scales Of Justice get special mentions. He talks of his five children whose ages range from 13 to 30. Lindsey says his wife Rebecca isn't hands on with the horses, but loves a day at the races. All the way through this interview Lindsey's laconic manner and sense of humour are never far away. It's a good yarn with a horse trainer who thinks outside the square.
This week we go back in time with former Hawthorn and Collingwood midfielder Scott Crow. Scott reminisces about his career, reflects on some of his favourite moments and people in the game. In his few seasons at the Hawks, he played 13 games before crossing to Collingwood, where he spent four seasons and played 62 games. In this episode, Scott chats about the day he got drafted, walking through the doors at Hawthorn for the very first time, why he crossed to Collingwood, playing ANZAC Day football and lining up with some star-studded midfielders. A great listen with our twenty-seventh member of 'The 90's Club Footy Podcast'. This episode has been produced by Set Sounds.

In this episode I chat with Amy Armstrong from Port Fairy, Victoria who at 10 months sober at the time of recording is on a mission to have more alcohol free options in the restaurants and bars around Australia and she is succeeding, one town at a time. Amy had struggled with binge drinking for years stuck in the cycle of drinking, black out, shame, repeat she had enough and through the suggestion of a friend she joined Annie Grace's, The Naked Mind one month sobriety course and has been alcohol free since. Focusing on self love she was able to change her mindset and start to make better choices for herself. While they are not for everyone , Amy prefers alcohol free (AF) wines, beers and bubbles to get through social events and finds they make her feel as though she is not "missing out", she still has a great time minus the crippling hangovers or black outs. I've recently started collecting vinyl, however my Celtic record collection is much smaller than I like. It seems like alot of older artists are out of print and newer artists distribute mostly digitally. Are you aware of any resources to find groups, perhaps ones featured on your podcast that offer music in this format?" David Turner replied to the Celtic Music Magazine: "Hello Marc, Thank you so much for your podcast which has been a constant companion these past few months. It’s very weird listening to pre Covid episodes with you expressing all the freedom of looking ahead with anticipation! Ah weill . Now favourites could be a long list! However, I still get prickles remembering the immense, involuntary roar at the conclusion of a concert by The Battlefield Band in Port Fairy in 1991, a roar not generated in the vocal chords, but deep from the core, as Big Iain and Wee John finally brought their frenzied duet to a close, the entire tent vibrating and humming with exhilaration. Tears in my eyes again! Yes, what a band, so my fave Scottish band. Honorary mentions to Dick Gaughan, Aly Bain and Dougie McLain. To Ireland, and Mary Black. Now this choice could well be clouded by my intense infatuation, but her Song for Ireland stops me in my tracks every time. Andy Irvine is also a hero. Keep up the good work Marc, we need good people like you! Warm regards. David” Bill Wall emailed a photo: "Cead Mille Failte. (I probably misspelled that) I'd been meaning to subscribe for a while, but when I heard a few people drop off I knew I needed to step up. The music of your podcast stirs up many emotions in me. I have been sober for 5 years now, and I listen to your podcast driving to one of my favorite 12-step meetings about 40 minutes away from my house. For all of the Wild Roving I've done, with Celtic music in the background, it's great to hear the music on the way to centering myself. The drive is from my stereotypically suburban environment into a wooded canyon where we meet at a monastery. The monastery has green hills behind it for a beautiful hike, which reminds me of my time in Ireland. Since I know you like pictures, I thought I'd include these two. Thank you for all you do to keep bringing the happy war songs and sad love songs."

"The fear of failure and having a failure can sort of over overcome me and stop people from actually chasing their dreams and their goals, due to fear. I don't do that anymore. I definitely did for much longer than I'd like to admit."Introducing episode #60 with business owner and mother of 5, Johanna Clark.A mother of 5 (yes 5 kids) all under the age of 13, Johanna has, for good balance, had 5 companies in her life.Currently involved in 3 of these quite a lot, we speak about her passion for creating an environment to empower women to live a life where they feel valued through the work they do and the moments they share not only at home, but at the work place too.Through her company, Pink Nade, she is well on the way to that. AROMATIC OLIVE OIL MASH (from Yotam Ottolenghi’s ‘Simple’) I kg Desiree potatoes (Peeled and cut into 3cm pieces) 6 thyme sprigs (5g) 3 mint sprigs (5g) 4 garlic cloves, peeled 1 lemon, finely shave the skin to get 5 strips 100ml olive oil Salt and black pepper Topping 60ml olive oil 1 garlic clove, crushed 2 tsp thyme leaves, finely chopped About 8 mint leaves, finely chop to get 2 tsp 1 lemon: finely grate the zest to get 1 tbsp, then juice to get 1 tbsp Method Put the potatoes, thyme sprigs, mint sprigs, garlic, lemon skin and 2 teaspoons of salt into a large saucepan. Cover with enough boiling water to rise 2cm above the potatoes. Simmer gently for about 25 minutes, or until the potatoes are soft enough to mash. While the potatoes are boiling, make the topping. Put the oil, garlic, thyme leaves, mint leaves, lemon zest and juice into a small bowl with 1/8 of a teaspoon of salt and a good grind of pepper. Stir to combine and set aside. Drain the potatoes into a sieve and set over a large bowl (you’ll use some of the cooking water so don’t throw it away). Pick out the thyme and mint springs, then return to the saucepan (along with the garlic and lemon peel). Use a masher to mash the potatoes, adding 100ml of olive oil and about 140ml of the cooking water slowly as you go, until you get a smooth mash. Transfer the mash to a platter and use the back of a spoon to create dips in the surface. Drizzle with the herb and garlic oil topping evenly over and finish with a good grind of black pepper.

Reg Mombassa, also known as Chris O’Doherty, has been exhibiting his paintings and drawings at Sydney’s Watters Gallery, nationally and internationally for over 40 years. In 2007 there was a major survey of his work at the SH Ervin Gallery in Sydney. He is also one of the leaders of a group of artists which created designs for the Mambo surf clothing label in the 80s and 90s. A recent documentary aired on the ABC in Australia looked at those artists and their influential and anti authoritatrian approach. But of course Mombassa is renowned not only as an artist but also a musician. In 1976 he founded the iconic Australian band Mental as Anything with fellow art student Martin Plaza and in 1990 he formed his band Dog Trumpet with his brother Peter O’Doherty. The music in the introduction to this episode is from the song ‘Made in the World’ from their album Medicated Spirits. Mombassa has also had a creative input into major public events such as the Sydney Olympics closing ceremony and Sydney New Year's Eve celebrations and has won awards for his poster and album cover works. His paintings are held in major Australian art institutions including the National Portrait Gallery and the Art Gallery of NSW.
