For some, the process of making music can appear effortless. For others, bringing one's music to life might take decades. The music welling up in the heart and mind of its creator, like a fine wine, or in this case, one of the finest debut albums, by any artist, in any genre, in many decades. One could say that Tommy Taylor has one of those classic “you don't know me, but you've heard me” musician stories. He has spent years as the drummer and backing vocalist behind singer/songwriter (Grammy and Oscar winner) Christopher Cross and guitarist Eric Johnson. Tommy has also played behind: Stevie Ray Vaughan, Charlie Sexton, Will Sexton, Sara Hickman, Charlie and Bruce Robison, Kelly Willis, Jake Andrews, Jerry Jeff Walker, Ray Benson and Shawn Colvin.Tommy has been preparing himself and his music for years to become the album Across The Stars. It is a recording comprised of what Taylor calls “Chekovian vignettes” - nine cinematic stories filtered through a lifetime of insights and emotions, delivered in his tenor voice that falls somewhere between the lilt of Jackson Browne's and the edge of Don Henley. Taylor's lyrics are incredibly personal and incredibly universal simultaneously. Who hasn't felt like the people in your life were there to “Let You Down?” Taylor describes himself as an observer. However, the songs on this album are filled with the stories and experience you get by living - not by watching. At the end of the 9 songs, you are left with a man's personal catharsis, and you are the richer for having had the experience. After years of his friends and colleagues encouraging Tommy to write his songs and get them recorded, Taylor finally went in the studio and started work on the album. With a little help from Christopher Cross, legendary record producer and keyboardist Michael Omartian (Christopher Cross, Donna Summer, Rod Stewart, Amy Grant, Steely Dan, Glen Campbell, Boz Scaggs, Jerry Garcia and Dolly Parton) agreed to play on Tommy's album.  After finishing his work and hearing the final mixes Michael said: “Man, this is a really good album. Everything sounds great. Wonderful songs and the overall production and musicianship is first rate.” That was on top of praise for Taylor's vocals on various tracks, and his declaration that the song “Everybody's Gonna Let You Down” “sounds like a smash.” You might catch yourself singing along to that chorus the very first time you hear it.Michael Omartian's words are a priceless endorsement, especially for an artist whose debut work has taken a few decades to arrive. But in his Across The Stars liner notes, Taylor explains, “This first effort is a culmination of a lifetime of personal ups and downs, and interests and pursuits.” Isn't that a perfect description of a life well-lived? Across the Stars was released on September 22nd, 2023.https://tommytaylor.com/homeSupport the showThanks for listening for more information or to listen to other podcasts or watch YouTube videos click on this link >https://thetroutshow.com/

Ray Benson is a national treasure, whose outfit, Asleep at the Wheel, has been spreading the Texas swing gospel for a long damn time. The album from which this recording derives was my gateway drug into a giddy universe of intoxicating joy.  It came out in 1993, and before that time the name of Bob Wills had reverberated around the corridors of my memory, but with this collection of loving renditions of some of his classic hits performed by a line up of Country music's finest practitioners (Marty Stuart, Vince Gill, Lyle Lovett, George Strait, Garth Brooks, Merle Haggard, Dolly Parton…the list goes on, including a surprise appearance by Huey Lewis) the barn had been burned down for good.I could have chosen any of the cuts, but “Big Ball's in Cowtown” is my choice because it makes me smile every time I hear it, starting with the title. I'm not a cowboy (not even an Urban one) and I don't dance, but what the hell. I can picture the whole town gettin' dressed up, coming down to the dance hall ready to celebrate life to the outer reaches, and I want to be right there with ‘em.Bob Wills formulated the recipe for a magic potion, mixing country with Jazz, and the world owes him a debt of thanks. Ray Benson has dedicated his life to it, and I'm grateful.

From there he'll describe fifty years of friendship and collaboration with Willie, with cameos by George Gershwin, Floyd Tillman, and Robert Duvall.

In terms of size and scope and considering the sheer number of legendary stars who graciously loaned their inimitable talents to the project, ‘Jake & Friends' can only be compared to other benchmark duets albums by the likes of Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett, a shining testament to just how far the singularly gifted Jake has come. Listen to the album's first two singles, “Two High,” featuring Moon Taxi, and “Stardust,” featuring Willie Nelson.Jake's own head spins when looking over his high-wattage guest list featured on the album - Willie Nelson, Bette Midler, Jimmy Buffett, Moon Taxi, Kenny Loggins, Michael McDonald, Vince Gill and Amy Grant, Jon Anderson, Ziggy Marley, Warren Haynes, Jack Johnson, Jesse Colin Young, Ray Benson & Asleep at the Wheel, Sonny Landreth, Lukas Nelson, Billy Strings. “I have to pinch myself when I see those names on my own album,” he says. “It's like, ‘Did that really happen?' Making the album was a real challenge, but I'm deeply honored that all of the artists agreed to record with me.”Over the past two decades, Jake has proved that there isn't a style of music that he can't play. While versatility for any musician is impressive, what's remarkable about Jake's transcendent skills is how he explores his seemingly limitless vocabulary – whether it's jazz, rock, blues, bluegrass, folk or even classical – on perhaps the unlikeliest of instruments: the ‘ukulele. Responding to the urgent calls of his fervent imagination, Jake has taken the ‘ukulele to points previously thought impossible, and in the process he's reinvented the applications for this tiny, heretofore underappreciated four-string instrument, causing many to call him “the Jimi Hendrix of the ‘ukulele.”

It's a new year Americana Podcast listeners! And with a new year, means new discussions on what makes Americana… well Americana. When we look at this genre, we talk a lot it's history and its future. And over time we've been able to piece together this ongoing timeline and certain elements that are key to its existence. Base influences in songwriting, certain instrumentation, and geography. If you've been a long-time listener, you'd know that many of our previous guests have attributed a great deal of their musical identity to where they learned music from. This of course is a holdover from the new world mentality in the west, where many genres developed due to particularly regional and social integrations over extended periods of time. When looking at Americana we are specifically looking at the European folk trad to bluegrass, blues to rock, and then rock and bluegrass to country as we know it today. That's a lot of words to basically say the place that you identify as home, has as significant of an effect on your musical education as who's albums you choose to listen to growing up. And Kentucky aside, some of the artists that know that best are from Texas and Oklahoma. There's a lot of opinions on the state of Red Dirt Music and Texas Country. Developing as sub genres in the late 80's to early 00's, this very regional brand of music came up in response to commercial country. And I'm not talking Florida Georgia Line commercial, I'm talking Tim McGraw commercial. Who we love. But there's a lot of ups and downs and opinions in the overall conversation but the general one is that Red Dirt and Texas Country became a space for outsiders beyond the Nashville standard. Piggybacking off of the outlaw movement and the historical legacies of artists, particularly Texas native Willie Nelson, these scenes were able to flourish in their respective regions and began to go a bit beyond. They were in a position to challenge the value of industry effect in radio versus organic growth in listenership. They developed loyal followings, local radio play. The works. But due to a long series of unfortunate commercial circumstances, the scenes have presently been relegated very much south of the red river. And I could go on about this, but fortunately this episode you can it straight from the quarter horse's mouth. Americana Podcast speaks with the artists who possibly have the most pertinent opinions on the state of Red Dirt and Texas Country and their weight in the views of Americana music. On this episode we have musical and actual giant Ray Benson from Asleep at The Wheel. Defender of the Dance Hall Randy Rogers, Okie not from Muskogee Jason Boland of Jason Boland and the stragglers, young blood William Beckmann, whip smart Wade Bowan, and philanthropist at heart Josh Abbott. The Shootouts create “country music for people who don't like country.”  Keith, Geoff, and Rufus can confirm.  They got a chance to chat about The Shootouts when lead singer, guitarist, and chief shooter Ryan Humbert stopped by Thunderlove Studio.  The band didn't expect to be back in the studio so soon after the release of their Top 10 Americana album Bullseye. But when one of country music's most legendary artists agrees to produce your next record, you don't say no.   That's what happened when a mutual friend introduced the band to Ray Benson –  longtime frontman and 10-time Grammy-winning founder of Asleep at the Wheel. Just months after the April 2021 release of Bullseye, the Shootouts found themselves hard at work with Benson and co-producer Sam Seifert on the album that would become Stampede.   While it may have come together quickly, the sessions resulted in the group's strongest album yet. Again, Keith, Geoff, and Rufus can confirm.   Stampede is steeped in all things country music – an energetic fusion of Americana, honky tonk and Western swing that will leave you craving more. Not only are the The Shootouts four members front and center, but the list of artists who stopped by to contribute is like an Americana fans wet dream: Asleep at the Wheel (in addition to Ray Benson producing) Buddy Miller Jim Lauderdale Raul Malo (of The Mavericks)  And the legendary Marty Stuart This is a great conversation with a great guy about a great band that has a great album queued up and ready to drop on February 24. Twelve Songs returns after a life-induced hiatus with a good interview with Ray Benson from the Austin-based Western swing band Asleep at the Wheel. We talked in the spring when the band was coming to New Orleans to play Jazz Fest, and you can see my story focusing on the band celebrating 50 years in the game with its Half a Hundred Years album and tour. That tour is always going on or soon to restart, so check your local listings because if they aren't coming to town, they'll get there sooner or later. We talk about COVID, which became very real for the band when members of the band were hit hard by it earlier this year. We also talk about his long-time musical friend Willie Nelson, Benson's admiration for his "Pretty Paper," and hear Christmas music by the band, Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys, The Resentments (on a song by one of my favorites, Jon Dee Graham), and Folk Uke, which features Willie Nelson and Arlo Guthrie's daughters.

Ravi Jayakaran is the President and CEO of Medical Ambassadors International which works to sustainably transform communities around the world through Christ-centered partnership, resource assessment, and customized training. Ravi's story begins with his grandfather who left behind a 2000 year family tradition of Hinduism to become one of the first Christians in his community in India. Growing up in the faith, Ravi went on to pursue a degree in veterinary medicine before transitioning to full time work with World Vision. In 2017, he took over leadership of MAI full time. Founded in the late 70s by Dr. Ray Benson, Medical Ambassadors International began as a traditional medical mission-trip style organization with U.S. surgeons providing medical care in Vietnam and several other countries. When Dr. Paul Calhoun took over as President, MAI began to shift from a provision-style ministry to prevention, with notable success. In the ensuing years, that focus began to expand well beyond medicine to a broader community health model now known as community health evangelism (CHE). Today, MAI's model involves beginning with a community assessment, identifying several village leaders who can take an inventory of the community's raw material, learned skills, and human resources. Those leaders then identify their community's greatest needs. Once those needs are identified, MAI provides training so that the community can work towards meeting its own needs with as little external support as possible.  Most importantly, each training curriculum is fused with gospel teaching that points to Christ as the ultimate provider and savior. In each community where the CHE process is implemented, MAI routinely sees large numbers of people come to accept Christ as their own saviour as they work to build and strengthen their community. Over the last few decades, MAI has amassed lesson plans on over 10,000 topics from rabbit rearing to mushroom harvesting to microenterprise to serve over 2600 communities in 75 different countries. And each village has at least 20 native volunteers leading the change in their community. Ravi has amazing insight into what it takes to drive sustainable change and gospel rootedness. Listen now to hear all he had to say!  QUOTES TO REMEMBER “Word and deed need to be in balance. We call that integral mission, or wholistic mission.” “With the resources that they have, what is the best thing to do?” “The drive is constantly to see how we can be more efficient and effective.” “What you put into the center of your development is what drives it. If it's community resources, community ownership, community capacity, that's what will drive it. If you bring in an external big box and drop it there, that's what they'll wait to see driving the process.” “A community must own its own transformation.” LINKS FROM THE SHOW Medical Ambassadors International Dr. Ray Benson – founder of MAI Dr. Paul Calhoun – second president of MAI who shifted focus to prevention Global CHE Network MAI's specialized programs for women, men, the disabled, and children When Helping Hurts by Brian Fikkert and Steve Corbett The Chalmers Center MAI Video: CHE Explained MAI Video: From Then to Now Ravi's book Healing Lives: Post Crisis MAI's virtual vision trip to the Democratic Republic of the Congo The Finish Line Community Facebook Group The Finish Line Forum BIBLE REFERENCES FROM THE SHOW Matt 5:14-15 | The Salt and the Light 13 “You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored?
