Larry and Cheryl Webster may not be big recording artists or the kind of musicians that sell-out arenas around the world, but they are as important to the music industry and community as anyone that has ever come out of Eastern Kentucky. Their network of contacts and influence put them in the role of linchpin for many mountain and bluegrass musicians through the now six decades the couple has been playing, writing, performing and booking music. It just so happens they were the couple whose Friday night pickin' and grinnin' sessions gave one of our hosts, Jason Falls, his roots in loving roots music. So he ventured home to Pike County, Ky., and invited himself into their kitchen for a chat.  Larry and Cheryl headed up The Mule Band, a traditional folk, mountain and bluegrass group, for years. It has served as the house band, if you will, for Pikeville, Ky.'s annual spring festival called Hillbilly Days, on and off since the late 1970s. Larry would invite promising mountain and bluegrass artists to play the event which became quite an honor for musicians from the genres.  Larry is also a prolific folk and mountain music songwriter with credits on recordings by The Local Honeys, Guy Carawan and Nate Polly among others.  Cheryl is known for her ability to harmonize and comes from an extensive family of musical talent including her cousin Darrell Scott. She tells the story of how his song “You'll never leave Harlan alive” is about their great grandparents. The song had new life injected into its popularity when original recording artist Patty Loveless along with Chris Stapleton performed it at the 2022 CMA Awards. The Websters are also the grandparents of promising fiddle player Ella Webster, the current touring player in Cole Chaney's band.     In a bonus segment, Frank and Falls share a clip from an interview with author Amy Bizzarri, whose latest book The Best Hits on the Blues Highway: Nashville to New Orleans on Route 61 is fantastic.  Frank and Falls also talk about their daughter's recent music activity including Lollapalooza 2024, and the Kentucky Governor's School for the Arts. And shared new music for your listening pleasure in the Pickin' the Grinnin' segment after the interview. In this episode of The Bandwich Tapes, I am thrilled and honored to sit down with the incredible Luke Bulla, one of my all-time favorite instrumentalists and vocalists. Our conversation is a deep dive into his remarkable musical journey and the experiences that have shaped his illustrious career.Luke's life has been steeped in music from an early age. At age four, he began touring and singing with his family band and took up the fiddle at seven. His prodigious talent quickly became evident as he went on to win the National Fiddle Contest in Weiser, Idaho, six times in his respective age categories. At sixteen, he made history by becoming the youngest winner of the Grand Champion division. By age ten, Luke had already made a mark at Nashville's Grand Master Fiddle Championship as the youngest top-ten finalist. In the spring of 1999, Luke moved to Nashville, diving headfirst into a full-time music career. His early years in Tennessee were marked by his stint with Ricky Skaggs' band, Kentucky Thunder, where his exceptional fiddle playing earned him his first Grammy Award. Following this, he joined the John Cowan Band. He performed and recorded with a host of renowned artists including Brandi Carlile, Jim Lauderdale, Darrell Scott, Alison Krauss, Jerry Douglas, Sam Bush, Edgar Meyer, Bela Fleck, and many more. His collaborations read like a who's who of the music industry, featuring names such as Bryan Sutton, Kevin Costner & Modern West, Shawn Colvin, Tony Rice, Chris Thile, Peter Rowan, Patty Griffin, Glen Phillips, Rodney Crowell, and Earl Scruggs.Luke was a perennial instructor at Mark O'Connor's fiddle camps during his early years in Nashville. Alongside his long-time friend Casey Driessen, Luke founded the band Wisechild, which toured briefly with John Mayer and Counting Crows. He also played a pivotal role in the band W.P.A. (Works Progress Administration), a collaboration that included notable members like Sean Watkins, Glen Phillips, Sara Watkins, Benmont Tench, Pete Thomas, Greg Leisz, and Davey Faragher. In 2009, Luke released a solo EP featuring a stellar lineup of musicians, including Jerry Douglas, Sam Bush, Bela Fleck, and Aoife O'Donovan. That same year, he joined Lyle Lovett's Large Band and toured full-time with them until 2023.In 2015, Luke co-founded the Bluegrass/Americana record label, Pure Music | Nashville, with music and business executive John L. Heithaus. The label released his LP, Who Loves You Better, in May 2016. Recorded at Zac Brown's Southern Ground Nashville studio and produced by Grammy winner Bryan Sutton, the LP showcases Luke's extraordinary musical talent.Join us for an enriching discussion as we explore Luke's diverse musical influences, his approach to songwriting, and the incredible journey that has led him to where he is today. 2.8.2024 #RolandMartinUnfiltered: GA DA Blamed for Fumbling Cop Shooting Case, Flint Water Crisis, Black Trumper Calls out Racism A black Georgia family says a black district attorney mishandled the case of the fatal officer-involved shooting of Devonte Brown by not presenting all of the evidence to the Cobb County grand jury. The Brown family attorney is here to explain.  The Supreme Court heard arguments in the election case to keep Trump off of Colorado's ballots. The questions asked by the justices seem to lean towards rejecting the argument Trump violated Section 3 of the 14th Amendment.  National Security expert Dr. Nola Haynes will join us tonight to discuss the latest U.S. drone strike and why the Israeli Prime Minister called a ceasefire proposal "delusional." We continue a reflection of the Flint Water Crisis with one teen's efforts to ensure every Flint citizen has clean water. Little Miss Flint, Mari Copeny, is here to update us on her water filter fund.  And Charlie Kirk is pissing off black conservatives. One of Trump's advisors, Dr. Darrell Scott, will join me tonight to talk about how racists like Kirk are taking over.  Download the Black Star Network app at http://www.blackstarnetwork.com! Sean Barrette is an author who has since written a book "Heartstrings - First Guitars" Heartstrings – First Guitars, is a collection of memories from a variety of musicians, famous, semi-famous, up and coming, anonymous, or otherwise, about the guitar they learned on, the first guitar they bought with their own money, the first “good” guitar they owned, or the beloved first-line guitar that accompanied them on first songs, first shows, first tours, or first recordings. These short, narrative pieces, tied together with first-time author Sean Barrette's memories of a life and career spent immersed in music, tell a story that demonstrates that, no matter the guitar player, they all have this first guitar story and love to tell it. It's the thread that ties all guitar players together, but these stories also provide insight into the very beginnings of many of the musical artists we love. The cover of Darrell Scott's latest album, Old Cane Back Rocker, immediately sets the tone for your listening experience. The inclusion of the names of the Darrell Scott String Band (Bryn Davies, Matt Flinner and Shad Cobb) lets you know right off the bat that this recording is a band effort. The photo on the album cover gives a visual of Scotts' family roots in rural Kentucky. His cousin Dwight Messer is standing in front of his former childhood home, now abandoned on the family land. The music reflects his family's story: some, like Dwight, stayed behind and some, like Darrell's father, Wayne Scott, moved up north to find work. Despite being raised in the north, Darrell's home has always felt like Kentucky and traditional music learned from there. These songs showcase those roots. In our conversation, Darrell digs into the darkness that can be heard in his music, even if it's not a sad song. He talks about his friend and frequent collaborator, Tim O'Brien, and how his performance and writing has allowed Scott to level up. Darrell also speaks to leaning into emotional songwriting and trusting his tears during the creative process. He shares the emotional account of rerecording his father's song This Weary Way and how he used to think Hank Williams had actually written it. Immediately after we finished our interview, lizzie texted me "what a cool eccentric intellectual dude." Couldn't have said it better myself. This episode honestly discovers the true essence of Darrell Scott—an artist whose music resonates with the soul, rooted in the traditions of Kentucky. Follow Basic Folk on social media: https://basicfolk.bio.link/Sign up for Basic Folk's newsletter: https://bit.ly/basicfolknewsHelp produce Basic Folk by contributing: https://basicfolk.com/donate/Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

Shinyribs is an Austin Texas band that began in 2007 as a side project for Kevin Russell, who also goes by Kev, and was then still committed to The Gourds, the band he had co-founded fifteen years earlier. A few years later, The Gourds released their last album, and Kev sauntered over to Shinyribs full time. Known for his showmanship on stage and for a big band approach to both the concept and performances of his music, and drawing from a smorgasbord of funky roots-rock, big band swing, Tex-Mex, screaming soul and burlesque blues, while pumping out infectious rhythms and topping it all with hooky harmony, Shinyribs is a party waiting to happen. At least that is what it sounds like on first listen, and looks like at first glance. Shinyribs is a shindig, and a large one at that, but it is also a vehicle for Kev's unique brand of poetry, which can point to deeper, darker issues at times, especially on his latest album Transit Damage. I spoke with Kev in early October 2023 on a crisp, clear autumn afternoon in the rolling foothills of the Upstate of South Carolina countryside before Shinyribs' performance as a headliner at The Albino Skunk Music Festival, where we talked about the secret sauce that went into his new album, about making good records in the studio and being equally good live, how starting Shinyribs felt like a hail mary to him at first, plus we discuss James Brown and an Albino Skunk Fest memory which parallels one of The Godfather of Soul's signature parts of his shows. Episode 260: Darrell Scott emerged in the late 1990s as one of Nashville's most complete folk/roots artists. He had the butter of James Taylor and the grease of Lowell George in his voice. He could pick numerous instruments like a practiced master. And his songs were stunning from the get go, including his widely-recorded “You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive” and his crowd favorite “Great Day To Be Alive” on his debut project. Now, Scott lives mostly on a farm two hours from Nashville tending the land and playing 60-80 dates a year. Recently he issued Old Cane Back Rocker, his first studio album since 2016 and his most bluegrass leaning project ever. I road tripped to Darrell's farm to record this week's atmospheric conversation.
